South Paulding DB gets early offer from Georgia Tech

South Paulding’s Ryan Ayers, one of the state’s fastest players, was offered by Georgia Tech on Saturday, according to his coach.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Ayers plays defensive back and is considered one of the state’s top prospects for 2010. He has scholarship offers from Arkansas, Duke, North Carolina and Oregon, among others.

“He went to Florida for their Friday Night Lights this summer, and he had the second-fastest time in the 40 [yard dash] out of 300 kids there,” South Paulding coach Tim Glanton said. “He’s run a 4.34.”

Son of former UGA player gets Georgia Tech offer

Buford junior defensive tackle Kolton Houston received an offer from Georgia Tech during his Junior Day visit this weekend.

“I was very impressed with their program,” Houston said.

The 6-foot-5, 265-pound junior now has offers from Georgia Tech, Maryland, Stanford, Vanderbilt and South Carolina. He is also on UGA’s most wanted list.

““[UGA assistant] coach Stacy Searles really likes him, and he is definitely on their radar,” Buford coach Jess Simpson said earlier.

His father, Shane Houston, played two years for the Bulldogs in the late 80’s.

Simpson said Houston has the frame and athleticism to play on either side of the ball, but Houston said he wants to be on the offensive line.

Heritage LB accepts walk-on invitation from Georgia Tech

Heritage linebacker Corey Alford accepted a “preferred” walk-on invitation to Georgia Tech, assistant coach Chris Pack said.

“Tech holds 10 slots that they give to preferred walk-ons, and they are treated like scholarship players, they just don’t get a scholarship their first year,” Pack said. “If they perform, they have a chance of earning some sort of scholarship in the future.”

Pack said the 5-foot-11, 215-pound senior has scholarship offers from smaller schools, but it appears he is headed to Tech.

“Tech really likes Corey and they are offering him one of their 10 walk-on slots to see if he can prove himself,” he said.

Collins Hills RB is Georgia Tech’s first 2010 commitment, says report

Saturday’s Junior Day at Georgia Tech was highlighted by a commitment from Collins Hill running back Charles Perkins, according to GoJackets.com.

“I’ve been to Georgia Tech several times in the past, and they’ve been recruiting me since my sophomore year,” Perkins told GoJackets.com. “I got a chance to meet coach [Paul] Johnson several times and really bonded well with him.

“He talked with me and told me how much he wanted me at Georgia Tech.”

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Perkins told the website he plans to enroll at Tech in January 2010.

Union Grove DE Anthony Williams was correct with Georgia Tech prediction

Anthony Williams’ prediction came true on Saturday.

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound defensive end from Union Grove had said for weeks that he would receive a scholarship offer during Junior Day at Georgia Tech.

“[Georgia Tech] coach [Paul] Johnson confirmed it,” said Williams, who also has offers from Stanford and West Virginia. “I’ll wait on a commitment to any school. But I was very excited about the offer.

“It’s one of my top schools that I would consider committing to.”

Williams’ day on Tech’s campus began at 8:30 a.m.

“We toured the facility, went to the recreation center and talked to a couple of the players,” he said. “And then the coaches answered any questions we had.”

He hopes to attend Junior Day at Central Florida next month. He’s penciled in a visit to Athens in March for Junior Day at Georgia.

McEachern TE commits to Kentucky, says SEC “is best football conference”

McEachern tight end Terrell Mitchell said the phone call he expected from UGA never came, therefore he committed to Kentucky on Saturday.

“I haven’t talked to [Georgia] in a long time … three weeks or more,” Mitchell said. “They haven’t even attempted to call. I guess I’ll see Georgia next when we [Kentucky] play Georgia.”

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Mitchell committed to Kentucky over Michigan. He said Miami and Georgia had shown interest, but neither offered.

“Kentucky has been with me since the start,” Mitchell said. “I liked Kentucky and Michigan about the same. But Kentucky is in the South, closer to home. My family will get to come to a lot of my games. I don’t think they’d go all the way to Michigan to see me as much.”

Miami made a late run at Mitchell, with the Hurricanes offering an official visit for this weekend. “They didn’t offer me, but I didn’t want to play in the ACC. I think the SEC is the best football conference.”

Mitchell said he is close to meeting college entrance requirements.

Nation’s No. 1 prep school prospect may not make UGA trip

Offensive lineman Bobby Massie of Hargrave, Va., who is ranked as the nation’s No. 1 prospect from prep schools, told TotalUGA.com earlier in the week that he had canceled his official visit to Georgia, and it appears he has kept his word.

Meanwhile, Ridgeland wide receiver Michael Bowman, a self-described “lifelong Georgia fan”, said that he will sign with Alabama on Wednesday.

Back to Massie: While Georgia’s coaches were hoping that he would have a change of heart, he had not reported to Athens by Sunday morning.

Also, two wide receiver prospects who had been rumored to be considering last-minute recruiting trips to Athens, Je’Ron Stokes of Philadelphia (committed to Tennessee) and Nu’Keese Richardson of Pahokee, Fla., (committed to Florida) also did not make it to Georgia.

However, the Bulldogs are playing host to two top targets on recruiting trips: Safety Jawanza Starling of Tallahassee, Fla., and Lowndes defensive back Greg Reid.

“They [UGA] said no one else was coming,” Reid said.

NCAA rules prevent colleges from commenting on prospective student-athletes. Any prospect has until midnight Sunday to make an official visit to a campus, even if it is only for a few hours. The NCAA’s “dead” period starts on Monday.

Massie appeared to be heavily favoring Georgia early in the recruiting process. The 6-foot-8, 330-pound Massie is also considering Alabama, Miami, North Carolina, and Mississippi, with Alabama considered to be the school to beat.

Massie did not return phone messages on Saturday.

Georgia Tech’s 2009 recruiting class nearly complete

With national signing day set to arrive on Wednesday, little recruiting drama is expected to unfold during the next four days at Georgia Tech.

It appears that the Yellow Jackets will have 22 players in this year’s recruiting class.

Including North Clayton defensive end Emanuel Dieke, who signed his letter of intent and enrolled at Tech earlier this month, the Jackets are holding 21 commitments.

Quarterback Dontae Aycock of Chamberlain High in Tampa, Fla. is expected to become the final member of this year’s class when he commits to the Jackets on Wednesday.

Tech had hoped to sign 6-foot-6, 285-pound Nolan MacMillan of The Hun School in Princeton, N.J. But he committed to Iowa on Thursday.

The Jackets apparently won’t pursue running back Wesley Tate of Pope John Paul II in Hendersonville, Tenn.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Tate will likely commit to Vanderbilt.

The Jackets are playing host to more than 50 underclassmen today during Junior Day.

Junior college “happy” to have former UGA recruit Toby Jackson

Navarro Junior College is known for producing top football prospects. And the Corsicana, Texas, school thinks it has another one in Toby Jackson, the former UGA recruit.

“We’re happy he’s here,” said Navarro coach Nick Bobeck, who had nine of his players recently sign with Div. I programs. “He is a heck of an athlete, I do know that.”

Jackson, the defensive end from Griffin, has had a long journey. He signed with UGA but did not qualify. He enrolled this year at Hargrave (Va.) Military prep school and and planned to sign with Georgia again. However, he did not improve his test scores enough, therefore enrolled in junior college earlier this month.

Jackson will have to graduate from the two-year school to be eligible for Division I. Indications are he hopes to resign with Georgia.

Mill Creek QB may delay decision to see if other colleges call

Mill Creek quarterback Ed Russ will visit West Georgia this weekend and could make his college decision in the next few days.

West Georgia has been “really aggressive with (Russ)”, according to Mill Creek coach Shannon Jarvis, but the 6-1, 195-pound quarterback has also received interest from Appalachian State and New Mexico State.

“West Georgia is by the far the strongest (interest) he’s gotten so far,” Jarvis said.

Jarvis thinks Russ might hold out until after Signing Day to see if certain colleges still have voids at quarterback.

“He might wait until after Signing Day; those chips start falling with quarterbacks, some schools don’t get what they want.”

Lithia Springs LB Justin Marable declines Ole Miss invitation

Lithia Springs linebacker Justin Marable said Ole Miss wanted him to make an official visit, but that he turned down the invitation.

Marable said he intends to sign with the only school that offered him, Alabama State. However, he had generated interest from Ole Miss, Iowa State, Western Kentucky and Valdosta State.

“[Alabama State] was the first school to contact me during my junior year,” Marable said.

“They were also the only school that would let me try to play defensive end. All the other schools wanted me at linebacker … which is fine, but I like [to play] with my hand down.”

Brookwood’s Williams already a star with Alabama fans

Brookwood’s Kellen Williams hasn’t put on an Alabama uniform, but he’s treated like a celebrity at Alabama.

Williams has been chased down for autographs and photographs at games in Alabama. The same thing happened when he went to the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Williams said he’s used to the attention after committing to the Tide.

“It happens a lot over at Tuscaloosa,” Williams said. “Before games, people see me walking in the street and they whisper. In New Orleans my mom was kind of, not freaked out, but said ‘don’t let it go to your head.’”

After his junior season, Williams, 6-4, 300, didn’t think he would end up in Alabama. The Crimson Tide was slow to recruit him and Williams thought he might end up at Vanderbilt or Florida. Before spring practice in April, Williams called Alabama coaches and told them that he was considering an offer from Florida State.

Williams wasn’t rated that highly by some of the scouting services, but coach Nick Saban told Williams that Alabama coaches liked what they saw on film. Williams wants to climb the depth chart next season and compete for a starting job by his sophomore season. He plans on staying all four years and graduating.

Stone Mountain LB visiting Tennessee, thinking about Auburn

Stone Mountain linebacker Robert Nelson said he may schedule an official visit to Auburn.

“It depends on if I commit here or not,” he said. The 6-foot, 210-pound senior is currently on an official visit to Tennessee.

Stone Mountain coach Charles Reeves said he thinks Nelson will commit to Tennessee.

“He likes Tennessee,” he said earlier. “He’s been up there a couple of times, and the coaches tell him he is pretty much the best linebacker they’ve seen.”

Nelson, a four-year starter, finished with 383 tackles and 24 sacks. He has a 3.4 grade-point average. Rivals.com ranks him as the 35th best inside linebacker in the country.
