Lowndes All-America DB Greg Reid “unplugged”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Greg Reid, the AJC’s player of the year, might be the nation’s hottest college football prospect.
Reid, a defensive back from Lowndes, was well known in Georgia circles but propelled himself onto the national stage with his MVP performance in the Under Armour All-Star game earlier this month. Reid intercepted two passes in the ESPN-televised contest.
As a result, college scouts have staged a massive invasion of Valdosta during the past few weeks to talk with Reid.
Reid was committed to Florida almost a year ago but backed away from the national champion last month because he felt he rushed his decision. Now Georgia is one of the front-runners for Reid, who also is considering Florida State and Alabama while turning down overtures from dozens of other schools.
This weekend, Reid will take an official visit to Georgia, his last recruiting trip before signing day. He discussed the recruiting process with the AJC:
Q: What has the past month been like for you?
A: “It’s been out of control, but I’ve tried to stay calm and not let all the [recruiting] get to me. I never knew it would get this bad. I figured some more colleges would be interested in me after the Under Armour game, but never this much . I was just thinking that was another game. I never knew this many people would want a 5-foot-8 cornerback.”
Q: You’ve never been viewed as the prototype prospect because of your less-than-spectacular size and speed, yet all these colleges want you. What gives?
A: “Any coach who knows football knows not to read too much into what a football player does without the helmet and pads on. These combines and camps are a little overrated. I mean, I did OK at them. But when I put on the helmet and pads on Friday nights, it was a whole different story.”
Q: When you backed off your commitment to Florida only days before the all-star game, you took a big gamble. If you play poorly in that game, it could have worked against you and lost you a ton of major-college offers. Why risk it? Why not wait until after the game to see how you play before backing off?
A: “What really made up my mind were the Under Armour practices. I was going up against all these players that were rated much higher than me and had scholarship offers from everybody in the country and I was holding my own against them on every play. After that, I knew I could play, and that gave me the confidence to make the tough decision about Florida.”
Q: What really went wrong with Florida?
A: “Florida was my favorite team growing up, so I committed to them as soon as I had the chance my junior year. Then I started looking closer at the depth chart in December —- who was coming back —- and they are stacked at cornerback. Florida has a great program, and I love the players and coaches, but it’s four years of my life, and I have to do what’s best for me. There are better opportunities for me to contribute earlier elsewhere.”
Q: There were media reports that you made hand signals during the all-star game to acknowledge your father, who is in prison. Can you elaborate?
A: “My daddy is in prison in Albany and has never seen me play in a high school game except for that one on ESPN. I was letting him know that I love him. He has been in prison [for aggravated assault] for going on five years, and we’re hoping he can get out in time for my graduation.”
Q: There has been a lot speculation about you meeting college entrance requirements. What’s your academic situation?
A: “I did terrible, terrible, terrible during my first two years of high school. Then as a junior, I started turning things around. I saw I could go straight to college rather than a prep school if I got it together. I started getting tutors, and my senior year has been awesome. I made all Bs first semester. I have a 2.6 GPA. I’ve had a lot of college coaches and counselors review my transcript, and they tell me that if I keep it up second semester, then I should be fine.”
Q: Your high school team was accused of having poor sportsmanship after losing to Grayson in last season’s state quarterfinals. What was your perspective?
A: “We hate to lose at Lowndes, and we didn’t handle that situation very well . I take the blame for that. I was a senior leader, and I should have had better control of my team . Whatever team I play for in college, I can promise you nothing like that will ever happen again.”

Greg Reid seems like a really good young man. The part about his dad in prison was almost a tear jerker as I could imagine his dad in prison watching his son play the game of his life. I bet that was one proud father amongst the convicts of Albany. Good luck Reid

What gives is right…The highest score you can get on the ACT is 36…I think that answers that question….that’s why I never believe what you read on this blog, rivals.com, and scout.com because kids and parents call you guys up and tell you whatever they want and you do nothing to verify what they say is true. You just print it and sound like you have the latest scoop in the inside story.

I am impressed by this young man’s interview. Being young and doing everything perfectly the 1st time around isn’t easy. I like the way he talks about his mistakes and how he is working harder to improve. I hope ppl see this youngster as a kid that is trying to do the right things in life rather than being judgmental and saying negative things about him.
My blood is RED and BLACK, but regardless of whether or not this kid picks UGA in the end, I wish him all the best.

Actually he talking about composite scale, when he refer to ACT score (53 to 66). According to his score he has a ACT score of 16 right now!
Wish all the recruits the best and make the best decision for them regardless of what school! because education is the most important part of college.

Other than the depth chart at Florida, his academic records would make it difficult for him to currently get into Florida or Georgia. He would have no problem getting into FSU. So folks, where do you think he is going? And to all thos DAWG rude fans that have been blasting Meyer for being “evil” and “revealing his true nature” with Reid, I guess Reid corrected your view on Meyer with his comments about the Florida coaches. Yes, he had a rough meeting with Meyer because Meyer would not tell him he would be starting next year and Meyer also told him he needed to recommit or move on. Both moved on, which is fine with Meyer and Florida. Florida is having difficulty signing any CB this year because of the depth they have there. With limited schollys and depth at every position on the roster, Meyer cannot afford “bad” LOIs this year. Next year, the Gators will sign 25 great players again.

TampaGator,
Not all of us are rude. There are rude folks on both sides, but I appreciate your demeanor in your post. It sounds like Meyer treated the kid honestly and directly. And it sounds like this kid is not exactly the way that some of the Gator fans have portrayed him either. So, the best of luck to both. Florida is having great success and is the gold standard right now. But we are going to do our best to put a stop to that. :) GO DAWGS!

It’s beginning to look like the Jim Donnan years over in Athens again. UGA gets a lot of 4 and 5 star recruits (with their academics they can recruit anyone) but they miss out on the primary recruits they targeted. Is this the beginning of the end for Richt? If they don’t bag at least two of their remaining targets this will definitely not be a “Great” recruiting year for us. Jones in Columbus, Reid in Valdosta, the receiver in Memphis (since we have already missed out on the receiver from Kansas that went to OU and Hill that chose Yech), and the TE from Florida is another one that we desperately need.
Is Tuesday the continuation of our problems? We still have Martinez coupled with much of the in state talent going elsewhere…Let’s hope Richt can straighten things out. Surely beating Hawaii is not the best Richt’s History will record????

After watching this guy play in the All- Star game, I can tell you that his size and speed will not be a problem, because of his natural insticts for the ball. Look at Rennie Curran, lack of size but one of the best linebackers in the toughest conference in America. Georgia needs players like this. I am a proponent of kids getting second chances. He is a KID who made some mistakes. His father is in prison and he has a chance to make something of himself with a chance at a free education and to become a millionaire in the NFL, I say gor for Mr. Reid!

Very goog piece Carvell . You and Holcolm cover high school sports better than anyone else…Good to see Reid’s take on things .Florida , His grades and manning up to the mistakes made at Grayson in the playoff’s…Also good to see that the rest of the country relizes what Northside -WR ,Coffee, Tift ,Vadosta and the rest already knew. That This kid is the best high school player in the country…I’m with Valdostaboy ,I’m glad we’ll never see him again at Northside, but wishing him the best of luck at the next level…he’ll be fun to watch on saturdays’s.

I have seen a couple of shots at UGA academics and I think those are misguided. I am an FSU fan so I have no bearing on the situation, but SmartMoney has done the research and found that UGA was the number #1 school in value for the money in all the nation based on graduate salaries out of college through 15 years later. I am not sure you can “dog” a school for academics when numbers like that don’t lie. I am just saying…

WhereRTheRecruits:
You are an idiot. How many SEC championships did Jim Donnan win? Sugar Bowls? We missed out on some big time recruits, but everyone does. Florida missed out on Greg Reid because of the depth chart. We missed out on Massie because of our depth chart. Massie knows he can play right away at Alabama. Jarvis Jones as wanted to play out of state all along, but we have made great strides with him. We may be on the outside looking in, but we still have a chance. Our class will still be highly ranked, and I think we will add Starling and Reid. We are also in the luxurios position of being able to hold a scholarship for Charles. We may end up signing him, because we are the only ones who did so. Cameron Kenney spurned us because he only has two years left anyway and he wanted to play with the reigning Heisman trophy winner for one of them. I don’t blame him. If we still had Stafford, he might have came here. Get your facts right, before you embarass yourself on the blog again.

Because he has bad grades it will be easy for him to get into FSU? First, FSU is a fantastic university of which I am a graduate. Second, how many Rhodes Scholars has UGA and UF had over the past three years—that were athletes? Third, if you thin major universities, especially those with nationally ranked football programs, such as UGA, UF, FSU, LSU, and Alabama, do not make exceptions for athletes you are delusional.

I had doubted the depth chart “excuse” in a prior posting, and I feel that I must retract that, at this time.
Taking Greg at his word, he does want to play early (who wouldn’t?) and apparently Florida is pretty set at his position. UGA, however needs some depth at the position and with Reid (possibly), Love and Smith coming in, along with the guys already there, we would be set for a few years, ourselves.
He sounds like a decent kid who wants to better himself and his situation. As long as he gets his grades up and can qualify, he would be welcome in Athens.

TampaGator, I too, am impressed with not only the tone of your remarks, but with Reid’s as well. These intelligent conversations redeem the sometimes ridiculous nature of the recruiting process as well as these blog posts. Florida is indeed the “gold standard” right now, and as an SEC fan as well as a Dawgs fan, I’m down right proud for y’all. Your status brings national luster to not only the SEC East, but the world famous party in Jacksonville as well. As long as Georgia/Florida compete for the East and Tennessee sits below Vanderbilt, all is right with the world. Go Dawgs !!!
P.S. I still don’t like UM :-)

Reid can play but he most likely goes to FSU due to academics as another poster suggested. He would be a sign and place at UGA and UF. FSU will flat out sign the academic risk…several recruits have been signed in 3 different classes…pads the recruiting rankings.
As to Starling, pups probably have better on the roster or elsewhere on their board. He was toasted by the better receivers at the UA game. FL honored the pre-arranged visit but had a 3 star safety (Evans) rated higher.

As I mentioned in a post yesterday, I don’t have any skin in this game so let me be blunt; lay off this kid.
Greg has been working hard to get his life in order, both on the field and in the classroom, and is doing remarkably well in spite of tremendous odds stacked against him. I’m sure he will work just as hard once he gets on College Campus next Fall.
All this bantering about his ego, his grades, or his off-the-field activities is, frankly, repulsive and classless. Perhaps if you walked a mile in Greg’s shoes for a day, maybe you would have a bit more compassion for the young man. I can guarantee you’d have a heck of a lot more respect.
Like I said at the beginning of this post, I don’t have any skin in this game, but what I do have is the utmost respect for Greg for what he has accomplished with his life and the fact that he’s put himself in the position that he is being so heavily recruited by some of the top programs in the Country. And by the way, the kid’s a baller on the field as well. Whichever Team Greg decides to play for is getting one heck of a ballplayer.

Why do so many Georgia haters read Georgia bloggs and make negative comments? It’s interesting but i guess it’s fun. You are a moron, check the NCAA sliding scale. UF doesn’t have it’s own standards, like Miami does, when it comes to admitting recruits. Your current QB got less than an 800 on his SATs and he had no issues getting in. Excellent attempt to make other schools look bad. And people want to know why the entire world hates UF fans. 95% of them don’t know their a-holes from their elbows.

Look, there are always a few of these kids who did not get the right educational background for a variety of reasons, it is not always the kids fault so do not blame them. The University’s do try to assist these kids earlier in the process these days so that hopefully they can qualify. Some of them never know college is an option until JR or SR year and then it is too late. It is easy for some of us to sit in judgement, but until you have walked a mile in their shoes I do not think you can. Football is big business for all big Universities, if you look at the profitability of the SEC schools alone you would be shocked. UGA is the most profitable, I am actually proud to say. They take risks working with the kids the kids for x number of years that they will jump to another school which is what Greg did with Florida, it happens to GA. Acceptable losses. They are all benefactors on both sides of the coin. They have made greater strides to improve the parody between student entrance exams and athletes, but I doubt it will ever be equal. We benefit from them and they benefit from us too.. Jan Kemp did change some of the bad, for all of the NCAA. It was very painful for us at UGA at the time, but overall I guess it was good.

For a UF fan to talk about acceptance requirements is laughable. Let me remind you that John Brown (Lakeland HS) and Jamar Hornsby (dead girl’s credit card boy) and countless others “magically” got accepted at UF when they barely graduated HS.
FSU has a very good chance, especially since UGA has 3 CBs coming in already. FSU just graduated a couple and Reid would be very close to Day 1 starter there. Reid really likes Mickey Andrews as well, so we’ll see. FSU is closer to home than UGA, also. Please, UGA fans, don’t tell me that your school is any better than anyone else’s at entrance requirements. One of my good friends got a schol from UGA and he was academically challenged to say the least. The teachers gave him grades just b/c they didn’t want to teach him another 3 years.

Apparently, Massie did cancel his trip to Athens. Word is, he is likely going to Alabama or Clemson, but UGA has been courting him for a while, and I believe he has already been to Athens, at least once so we’ll have to wait and see.
At any rate, we do need WRs, DEs and DBs at UGA, so if Massie decides to go elsewhere, it will open up a spot for one of these other “must have now” spots.

Why did Bobby Massie cancel. He is rated as one of the top 3 tackles in the country? I saw where Bama already has one of the top tackle recruits in the country in DJ Fluker so why can’t we even get Massie to come for a visit? Did he in fact cancel or not?

Cameron, like your wishful thinking, but face reality, if you were Reid and Starling, who would you rather play for, Martinez or Mickey Andrews. UGA will lose both of these players to FSU, and Richt as usual want face the reality that not only does his buddy lose games on the field, but he hurts UGA off the field during recruting. Don’t think for a minute that opposing coaches don’t use his pathetic scheme against UGA in recruting. Reid seems to be a shutdown corner, and Martinez plays his corners 10 yards off the ball. Martinez and Richt will both be gone before these kids leave school in 4 or 5 years, and Bowden will be gone sooner than that, so it really doesn’t matter which school they go to. But if i were a betting man I would say FSU, and that will make Richt and his pathetic coaches 0 for 7 in closing out this class. Evans had better wake up and smell the coffee on RIcht and this staff. He had better look around and see that the SEC east just got a little tougher with Phil gone, and Auburn’s new staff is doing a great job of closing out this class. And don’t even mention how Saban and Meyer will close out this class. Things do not look good for UGA in the future, especially as long as Richt stays at UGA. Remember this list on Feb. 4th(Massie,Kenney,Hill, Jarvis Jones, Orson Charles, Reid, Marlon Brown, and Starling). That is why UGA want win another SEC title as long as RIcht is in charge.

This does not seem like the guy I had read about. I give him a lot of credit for saying it was all about the talent at Florida. Most guys don’t have the integrity to say that if it was the FACTOR. Greg, Good Luck.
I’m a 1969 Florida grad and I hope he goes to Georgia. Rather have him playing for a coach who remembers his players names, appears lucid in interviews, does not wander the sidelines aimlessly, appears to be aware of his surroundings, Is able to drive his own car and has NO apparent cognitive difficulties, ACTUALLY coaches his team during a game and MOST IMPORTANTLY, according to every actuarial table I’ve seen, Mark Richt appears to be DEAD certain of being with us in 4 years. A recruit should never discount actuarial tables. These life expectancy projections usually nail it. Life insurance companies do not like to lose money. Now I know it appears difficult for some kids to comprehend the importance of coach of the school they select REALLY being able to promise he will BE THERE—-To me this would be a factor.
Past glories are important. The only negative being they are PAST!!! I bet most of you who select a company to work for would like to know that the ‘head” of the company is REALLY the HEAD of the company and not the DREADED “Figurehead”. There is a reason people are designated “figureheads”. BECAUSE they can no longer function in previous capacity.
There remains a significant number of 17 and 18 year old kids who can be “hustled” by cornpone artists. I guess there is “one” born every minute.
In this case—Go Dogs!!

From what I’ve heard, Boweden will honesly be able to say “I had no knowledge of anything that happened in the last 5 years”. I don’t see how the NCAA can discount that statement. Look at the The Bobby Bowden Show and You Tube “Bobby Bowden Pregame Speech” for proof.

Dean, ACTUALLY, by every college guide you may consult, The University of Georgia is ranked over FSU by a significant margin. Georgia freshmen have higher entering SAT scores, higher high school class rankings, and Georgia is way more selective in acceptance numbers. Don’t believe me. Go to any bookstore in America and purchase ANY guide. U. S. News and World Report’s Rankings of Colleges and Universities is seen as the best. You will find that Georgia and Florida are right there with some schools you would not have expected.
Dean, you sound as if you actually attended Georgia. I will wager you do not use “gayturds” as I don’t say “UGay”. I’ve noticed that my FSU, Miami, Georgia, Michigan and other friends who went and graduated from college usually abstain from ridiculous designations of other schools. Now when you are picking up groceries at Publix or having your pizza dropped off—Then you hear the crap.

As a Valdosta fan, it was hard to watch Greg Reid beat us for 3 straight years. All we ever hear in Valdosta is negative comments about this young man. I co-host a radio show here in Valdosta with Mike Davis of Winnersvillesports.com and we had Greg on the show a few weeks back, and I can honestly say that I walked away from that show very impressed with Mr. Reid. He seems to have gotten his act together, and I for one wish him the best. He is going to announce his decision on our show next Tuesday night. If anyone would like to listen in, you can go to talk92.1.com and listen live. The show starts at 6pm. As far as I understand, there will be hats on the table from UGA, FSU, UT, Miss.ST, & Ala. There could be more. I don’t know. He will pick one of those hats on the show. I look forward to watching him on Saturdays next season, wherever he may go. The UGA clan was in Valdosta yesterday, so I am sure that there is a push from Athens. At any rate, best of luck to Greg Reid. This Wildcat is pulling for you.

Enough Already! None of these institutions give one rip about academics. These guys are not in school to earn a diploma, they are there to play football, PERIOD! It’s all so hypocritical. I for one don’t give a cuss about whether a guy makes 300 on the SAT. The bottom line is if he can play… GT, UF, UGA, all the major schools in the country make exceptions to athletes. Yes, I know there are exceptions to the rule, but come on, most of these guys would NEVER be admitted to a major university without their skill as football players…

When have you heard of a coach being this honest with recruits? UT’s new coach has now told 2-3 Fulmer commits that they probably would not fit into the new program. Now, thats a breath of fresh air considering all the bald faced lies coaches throw into the faces of players nowdays.
Tennessee commitment Damien Thigpen is pursuing other options after being told he would likely not fit into the Vols’ plans under new football coach Lane Kiffin.

” … because of your less-than-spectacular size and speed …” ?????????????????????
Carvell’s question implies Greg Reid is small and slow. From having seen him play at Lowndes for four years, let me assure you of something, and you can take this to the bank: Greg Reid may be average in size for a cornerback, and he may be anything else you want to try to make him, but one thing he is not, is SLOW!
Forget what any 40-dash times read. Forget what scouts say or contemplate. Gred Reid is a blur. Here’s what his speed is: just fast enough to beat ANYONE chasing him. If it needs to be a 4.5, he’ll run it. If it needs to be a 4.2, he’ll run it.
I’ve been watching football for 43 years, and folks, let me assure you … Greg Reid has the fastest acceleration of ANY player I have ever seen. And I’m talking about accelerating either from a full stop, or accelerating during a run. The best analogy is the old Road-Runner cartoons, in which the coyote, flying along at full speed (for him) just knew he was about to finally catch up with his old nemesis … and then, just when he reached out to grab the bird, ZIP! … the coyote is left in a cloud of dust. This is Greg Reid’s speed.
He also has more moves to go with this speed than anyone I’ve ever seen. Just ask the hundred or so guys who’ve been chasing him the last four years. And whoever gets him will be crazy not to play him on offense some, like Florida uses Percy Harvin. Greg Reid needs to touch the ball as often as possible, in every way possible, for a team to fully exploit his talents.
Good luck and Godspeed, Greg. Do what you think is right for YOU. Keep working hard in the classroom, son, and everything will work out well for you. And good luck in having your Dad re-enter society, becoming productive again, and re-establishing his relationship with you, after he pays his dues to society.

If you are a better D-coordinator than Martinez, then apply for the job. Miami has an opening and he is the first one mentioned. It must not be Richt who is the only one who thinks this guy can coach. Remember this list: Reid, Brown, and Starling. That is who will be signing with us on signing day out of the remaining targets. Massie is going to Alabama for early palying time, he doesn’t want to compete at UGA. Richt is the best thing for UGA football since Vince Dooley and Herschel Walker. You should know you were alive then. I have subscriptions to both of the top recruiting websites. Richt does an excellent job in recruiting. We wouldn’t sign half the kids we do, if it weren’t for him. Oh yeah, and all of the DBs talk about how much they like Martinez. We never were able to go out of state and recruit top kids before Richt. Stop being so pessimistic, listen to someone who knows what they are talking about, and stick by your TEAM! When these kids sign, come back and tell me you were wrong.

We may have missed on some late decision recruits, but we got Aaron Murray, probably the best QB prospect east of the Mississippi, Abry Jones, Branden Smith, Austin Long, and some other great prospects. It’s a great class, even without the late decision-makers.

TO gt4ever: You’re a real cynic if you believe what you write. There are thousands of cases of guys (athletes and non-athletes) who entered college for whatever reason who supposedly didn’t have the academic talent to be there. And then as they matured mentally, emotionally, academically, and physically, with tons of good guidance and sincerely-caring people pushing them in the right way, emerged as smart, strong and educated, who went on to contribute to society (as athletes and non-athletes). You don’t have to be a brainiac PhD to make a difference in this world.
College has given millions of people in this country the opportunity to improve their lives in every way. A lot of good change can and does happen over this 4- or 5-year important time in their lives.
I for one believe that Greg Reid, like so many others before him, will eventually complete his degree and make a positive contribution to society, either in athletics, something else, or both. gt4ever, If you don’t believe this can happen or should happen, you truly are the cynic you seem to be. And you have no business trying to lead or shape the lives of others, especially young people, with such an attitude.

Others that affect I have never heard this story before. You may be surprised!
DJB
Pam knows about the pain of considering abortion. More than 21 years ago, she and her husband, Bob, were serving as missionaries to the Philippines and praying for a fifth child. Pam contracted amoebic dysentery, an infection of the intestine caused by a parasite found in a contaminated food or drink. She entered into a coma and was treated with strong antibiotics before they discovered she was pregnant. Doctors urged her to abort the baby for her own safety and told her that the medicines had caused irreversible damage to her baby. She refused the abortion and cited her Christian faith as the reason for her hope that her son would be born without the devastating disabilities physicians predicted.
The doctors “didn’t think of it as a life, they thought of it as a mass of fetal tissue,” Pam said.
While pregnant, Pam nearly lost their baby four times but refused to consider abortion. She recalled making a pledge to God with her husband, “If you will give us a son, we’ll name him ‘Timothy,’ and we’ll make him a preacher.”
Pam ultimately spent the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and, eventually, gave birth to a health baby boy August 14, 1987.
Pam’s youngest son is indeed a preacher. He preaches in prisons, makes hospital visits, and serves with his father’s ministry in the Philippines.
He also plays football. Pam’s son is TIM TEBOW !
Last year, the University of Florida’s STAR QUARTERBACK, became the first sophomore in history to win college football’s highest award, the Heisman Trophy. Tim’s notoriety and the family’s inspiring story have given Pam numerous opportunities to speak on behalf of women’s centers across the country.
She was the keynote speaker at the Oct. 23, 2008, benefit banquet for two Louisville ministries. A Woman’s Choice Resource Center offers such services as free pregnancy tests, post-abortion counseling, adoption information, and material support. Necole’s Place is a companion ministry that provides support services for women in need.
Several Louisville-area Kentucky Baptist churches and Long Run Baptist Association help support both ministries.
A Woman’s Choice board chairman, John Schmitt, reported at the banquet that in the 20 years since the resource center opened, 4,500 children have been saved from abortion — 400 in this year alone.
Speaking of the thousands of lives saved, Pam Tebow said, “That just blows my mind. Every little baby you save matters.”
AMEN!

I knew just as soon as I wrote this, I would get some off the wall response, from someone who is living in la la land….
I’m simply stating a fact that the University’s in this country are in the business to make a profit. They see football for what it is, a MAJOR income revenue stream that can benefit the University in a very positive way. Responding to some of the previous posts prompted me to state the OBVIOUS!
I personally don’t have a Cynical bone in my body. It’s just very funny to hear people make fun of institutions who make exceptions for football players. Again, all the major institutions make EXCEPTIONS. It’s not cynical to state the obvious, it’s fact! I guess I’m just a REALIST! Yeah, maybe that’s what you meant. :)
A I stated in my earlier post. There are always exceptions. Yes, there are some kids who have the ability to do college work, and they find college a very positive experience. There are also kids who have NO business in college, and with all the help in the world, they will never survive. This is not cynical to state, this is fact, some kids need to take a different path.
I hope Greg finds his way, I have no problem with him using football to leverage his career. I had no intentions of criticizing Greg or any other young kid, I wish him well in his athletic career, or his academic career.

Height is an overrated consideration for a defensive back. This isn’t basketball. A defensive back’s most important goals are to stay in position and make a play on the ball. They aren’t playing the reciever. They are playing the ball. If they do this the reciever’s height rarely comes in to play. Reid is a phenomenal athlete with great extincts. He will excell at the next level whoever is lucky enough to get him.

I bet you liked Calvin Johnson’s chances against our smallish CBs also, didn’t you? Also, when are the Gnats ever going to throw the ball into the endzone? Didn’t happen once this year. The only time you scored on a pass play this year was because of that gimmick offense. Got news for you: teams will be prepared for that gimmick O this year and you will NEVER win more than 7-8 games in a season with that slobbish, egotistical coach of yours at the helm. Revel in your fluke victory this past year; the next on ewon’t come for another 7-8 years! GTHGT

Expert I’ll take a lob to the corner of the end zone every time. Your right about making a play on the ball and staying in position, but PLEASE to say that height rarely ever comes into play is ABSURD! He will probably be a good player at the next level, but like all high school players taking the step to the next level, they will soon be humbled…

A years work? You mean going 9-4, winning absolutely freaking nothing, and getting shredded in your bowl game by 5 touchdowns? Is that the years work you are talking about? And you Tech idiots wonder why recruits of Greg Reid’s caliber wouldn’t p!ss on Tech if it were on fire. They want to play big time college football. Tom Selleck @1:57 — I respectfully disagree. While I acknowledge the greatness of some of those players under Donnan, I have to say that Stafford and Moreno were pretty fair talents, & Pollack wasn’t bad either. And while he hasn’t had a stellar pro career, Greene won a few games at QB. I could continue, but you get my point.
Gt4ever: I get what you were saying about football being a business. I didn’t take it that you were disparaging any particular university or athletes. And while it was a bit ouchie to lose to Tech this year, it was good for the rivalry, and all I can say is congratulations on the victory.
TampaGator: You have no idea what Urban Meyer said to Greg Reid. He’s not allowed to discuss it because of NCAA regulations and not even Greg Reid gave a detailed account. Your claims about what was said was speculation. As a Georgia fan, I don’t whine when UF signs a player from Florida (or Georgia) so you’d seem a little less obsessed about UGA recruiting if you weren’t trying to make yourself seem like an expert on a guy who’s turned your school down. But anyway, congrats on your victory this past year too. Here in Georgia, we call that “one in a row.”

Only at Georgia Tech would fans claim they have some kind of momentum after getting bent over by 35 points in their previous game. Only at Georgia Tech would fans claim they are on a roll after losing 3 of their final 6 games, including 2 blowouts. This is the sort of thing that can get a coach fired at a big time program. At Georgia Tech it gets you a ring and a big fat pay raise. Is there a program in all of college sports with more laughably low standards than this? I submit to you that there is not.

5’8” CB who doesn’t give his all at combines and camps…what’s going on in his head…he just got interested in school these past two years…16 on his ACT…2.6 GPA while being tutored…my take on him is that he would probably benefit greatly by going to a prep school and get acclimated to getting good grades and study habits…I’ll give him the benefit of doubt that he wants a college education, however he sounds more like a football player first and a student second…adjusting to college life is hard enough for good students…save the scholarship and save the kid by having him go to a prep school and gaining those skills necessary to survive at an institute of higher learning…

For what it’s worth, Greg Reid doesn’t need the benefit of your doubt. It doesn’t matter to anyone except you (obviously) whether Mr. Reid is 5’8” or 6’8” or 4’8.” And your views on whether or not he should attend prep school — duly noted for the record but inconsequential for the outcome.

It sounds like a kid who loves the gators and is just scared that he will never play because of the Gator’s depth chart. Good luck to him. It is too bad the depth chart is so stacked at his dream school.

Its funny how things change… I was at that game and going into the playoffs we knew we would play them and he would be the one to taunt. It just added incentive that he was a gator commit but now Im rootin for him all the way, there was nothing he could of done to stop that fight his team was full of thugs that got outplayed and outclassed. But best of luck for greg reid in the future. GO DAWGS

To dawgsux You are an a*****! What a cheap shot to throw that young man’s father in his face like that. He is not responsible for his father, and how dare you even wish something that horrible on him. Keep your negative a* comments to yourself. This young man is going to be great one day. Too bad we can’t say the same for your negative, sorry A*!

Hey nole grad? Your 2-bit school claims to be a great school for criminal justice programs. Why? Because you don’t have to leave campus to find any ciminals. You have an endless supply of them hanging around with Bobby Bowden. After all, he owns the Leon County Bar (A*)ociation.

Greg, I am sure you know the Dawg Nation hopes you decide to wear the G. Recently, as a girls basketball coach I had to address the issue of sportsman after a recent game incident of our own. I used the example of Lowndes playoff game to the team in how I have read blogs with a few people trying to trash an entire program, school, coaches and players by a single incident and how unjust that can be for so many not involved. After having read your responses I perceive a very mature athlete taking responsiblity even though you were not at fault. This shows leadership on your part. You have a great attitude and what you said speaks volumes about you as a person. Hope to see you wearing the red and black on Saturdays but regardless I wish you well no matter which school is fortunate enough to land you. Good luck and stay healthy.

To kneeJERK, coach, and all you other haters You ask how can we say he’s the best athlete in the country? Because he played with an against the top rated athletes in the country, many rated higher than himself by the powers that be, but yet Greg Reid was named MVP. Those high school players in the UNDERARMOUR All-Star game came from all over the country, but GREG REID was named MVP. So all you on this blog with your negative vibes including ghkid talking noise take it somewhere else because you know nothing about this kid. GREG was not talking nor did he get involved in the skirmish at Grayson. Furthermore, if Grayson players hadn’t been spitting on people and making racist csomments they wouldn’t have gotten smacked in the mouth. Greg was on the bench during that exchange so don’t put him in that mess. Regardless to what negative comments you make about this young man, he will make it and do well. As far as height is concerned, I’ve seen GREG go up against some 6’ and taller receivers and shut them completely down. If you don’t beleive me, go back and watch any of the games he played in. He can jump with the best. GO GREG! Don’t let these negative naysayers stop you. What God has for you, it is for you, and nothing and noone can change that. So haters… get a life.

Unless the young man grows to 5’11” or 6’0”+ he’ll be a bust (for lack of a better term) at the next level on D. If he doesn’t grow much then the O side of the ball is where he could be a weapon - again IF what we are all seeing isn’t his PEAK.
Remember folks …. many kids reach their PEAK at different stages in life. FOR EXAMPLE ……..
Dre Bly was one of the top DBs in college ….. who does he play for in the NFL???? Terrell Davis, Denver Broncos RB MVP (I think of the league & Super Bowl) … can you tell me where he played, and how good he was in college?? How about Kijana Carter from Penn State; or Geno Toreetta of Miami; or Alex Smith from the Utah Utes (sorry Bama), or Andrea Hastings from UGA (his best days were, BY FAR, in high school); or Andre Ware from Houston, or Ryan LEAF from Wash.St.; or Matt RYAN from Boston College, or Matt Leinart (USC), Brady Quinn (Notre Dame), Danny Wurfell(UF), Robbie Bosco (BYU - 80’s), or Joe Hamilton(Ga.Tech)
Only one of these guys mentioned was a solid success at his NEXT level mentioned (the jury is still out on Matt Ryan).
My personal opinion is that: If this young man is on D in college nobody will remember him in 24 months. And if the program that gets him is observant, and puts him on O, then no telling what the “crystal ball” has for Mr. Reid.
Just one man’s Observation/Opinion.

GA Tech will beat Ga in 2009.
Gailey’s gone fellas, and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that GA was lucky to win 3 of 4 (and arguably the 2007 contest) before 11/29/08.
While many a dog fan believe the future to be bright, as it well may be from August - mid November, there’s suddenly a dark cloud that will continue to loom over the dogs when they play the Jackets.
Just like your parents telling you “the facts of life” and you not willing to accept it b/c you were too young; GA Tech will be the consistent winner in the Tech-GA game as long as Paul Johnson is roaming the Flats.

Calling out Meyer a few weeks ago made Reid look like a fool. He is a typical guy that will likely end up at FSU etc and wonder about the mistake he made a few years later( just think of Harvin’s HS teammate who committed to UF and then went to FSU). He want’s to start on the defending national champions? Maybe he should go to Georgia Southern.

A Black talented young man like this should reject Georgia and play in a blue state. Georgia is a rascist state and only wants to exploit him for entertainment purposes. Confederate state athletes get very little political support from the rank and file rascists voters and once they’re injured they’re thrown away like yesterdays garbage…Richt is no different from any of them. He’s a typical white republican, deeply self righteous and has no interest in these athletes beyond what they can do for him. I would suggest UCLA or Southern Cal…get out of the confederacy until they become more progressive.

Hey Van: Do the world a favor and get a vasectomy. That way you can be a seedless fruit and an idiot at the same time. If your idea of progressive is to follow the likes of your heroes(Barney Frank, Nancy Pelosi, and the other left leaners)then you aren’t progressive, you are a MORON. PS: Methinks you doth protest too much about racism. You definitely espoused tons of it in your blog.I personally don’t care what your ethnicity is. You are simply ignorant.

Van - you may or may not be serious. However, if you are serious, you are a seriously bigoted, narrow minded person. You obviously hate all Republicans and have unthinkingly concluded anyone who is “dumb” enough to be one must somehow be a racist (correct spelling by the way). In a word, you are pitifully ignorant and in need of both education and personal mentoring .
By the way Van, have you ever seen the demographics on the differences in education, criminal records, medium income, etc between those who vote Republican and those who vote Democratic? Very interesting!
Thankfully, Marc Richt is a much finer person than you have demonstrated yourself to be.

I am happy he spoke the way he did in response to the way his team acted after the Grayson Loss. As a Leader all the Seniors should have taken responsibility for that horrible display of Bad Sportsmanship.
I saw it on TV.
We all make mistakes, and that was awful. We all need a second chance at some point in out lives , and some more than that. It does speak volumes this kid stood up took the rap as a leader of that team.
American’s need to look in the mirror, and take responsibility for their actions both good and bad.
I wish this kid a ton of Good Luck in his future……and all the kids from that team, that feel the same way.

Florida just had 3 decommits and has a chance to lose a few more. They got back the worst of the 3 decommits (many uf fans didn’t want mike g to recommit). Nukeese is visiting ut and he has been a soft commit for sometime. Watch out for Gary brown and fsu. He has a high amount of interest in the criminoles. Right now at best uf finishes with josh evans and jelani jenkins. Two very good pickups, but not near what you would expect from a nc championship. Jarvis Jones to texas. Greg Reid to uga. uf won’t even get 20 commits it looks like now.

Lawdawg- you said UGA loses 2 1st round picks every year? They haven’t had a 1st round pick in 3 years. If you choose to argue, at least do it with facts. Here’s another question for you. When was the last time UGA lost a WR, RB, or QB to a first round pick??? Was it Garrison Hearst in’93? You have no idea of the hole left in your offense for this coming year. It’s even bigger than some of the holes that Dwyer ran through this year. Your smugness and warped sense of reality are why people like to see UGA lose. Those camera shots of the fans in Athens after Julio Jones caught that TD at the end of the first half were PRICELESS. Again, I don’t mind discussing, but I won’t stoop to your name calling. And a “lawdawg” should know to stick to facts.

Hey GREG go to FSU with DEMPS and show all the ACC what defense is all about. I really enjoyed watching both of you guys on Friday nights at Lowndes. Tallahassee is close to home which means his family and we Lowndes fans could easily make it down to Tallahassee on Saturday. Nobody wants to take that long boring drive up to Athens. Also, I’m reading about how the UGA fans are saying how great of a player Greg is and how now they would love to have him in the back field wearing red and black with the Smith kid, but truth be told until Greg were an option of possibly improving the DAWGS nobody on this blog had not one good remark to say about REIDnor our Vikings. I remember all the thug comments and how this kid is never going to make it beyond his high school career. So, i hope he doesn’t sign with UGA. I really think Reid, and Demps could do some damage at FSU.

Isn’t this the teacher or teachers that are helping him qualify.
A lot of uga comments, very interesting.

Guess Valdosta still has a lot of uga fans.

Wow, there is some serious smack talk going on here. Seriously, some people need to take a step back. What’s the point of insulting other schools academics, coaches, or recruits? Anyone that actually attended one of these schools knows that UF, UGA, and FSU are all great academic institutions, Bama and Auburn are will be great soon, and UT and LSU are getting better. Being a Gator Grad, I can point out that UF is ranked higher than the others, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t great (or good) as well. And what really is the difference between a few spots on some magazines academic report?
As for recruiting, we’ll all be fine. How many 4 & 5 star recruits can you think of that were total busts. I can think of quite a few at UF. We are all recruiting the same players. Some years Bama and UGA will sign better ranked classes, the next it will be UF and LSU, and then UT and Auburn. It goes in cycles. Ususally depends on depth charts and the number of schollies available. My point is that all of our rosters are made up of a similar quality of players, and that won’t change. It’s what you do with them once they arrive that counts.
People in this state hate on Urban Meyer, but don’t you wish Mark Richt could get as much out of his equally talented (if not more talented) team as Meyer does? There were at least 3 NFL lottery picks on your offense this year (Stafford, Moreno, and AJ Green), and maybe more. UF likely won’t have 1 lottery pick from the offense this year. You can hate Urban Meyer all you want, but you have to admit he does a good job of getting the most out of his players.

Jacket Backer, I bet you were the first in line to buy a ring celebrating 45-42. You are pathetic!! Let me give you some numbers to ponder…..51-7, 59-37-5, 7 out of the last 10, 14 out of the last 20, 22 out of the last 30……..I hope you are able to get the point. Yes tech won this year but I wouldn’t be bragging about a 45 to 42 score. UGA obviously had defensive issues this year but to brag about a game where your team gave up 42 points? Oh I forgot one other 38-3 ha ha ha ha!!!
