UGA has prime position in recruiting Lowndes DB Greg Reid

Greg Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year, admits that UGA has an advantage by being the last college he visits before signing day.

“It’s a big factor, let me tell you,” Reid said. “Georgia is coming to do an in-home visit on Thursday [in Valdosta]. Then on Friday, I’ll go to Athens for my visit. I’ll be at Georgia all day Saturday, and then at Georgia on Sunday morning … probably pulling out of there around noon. That’s a lot of Georgia over the next few days.”

Other colleges will be able to contact Reid, the All-America cornerback from Lowndes, on Sunday night. Then the NCAA’s “dead” period begins on Monday.

“Basically, I have really only have one day [Monday] to really think about everything, because I’m going to pick my school on Tuesday, and then sign on Wednesday [Feb. 4].”

Reid, who claims no favorites, has already visited his other finalists, Florida State and Alabama. He gave UGA the last weekend on his recruiting schedule.

“That’s what a lot of people have told me, since Georgia is my final visit, and they have the chance to make the last impression on me, that Georgia is the school that I’m going to pick,” Reid said.

“If I feel comfortable and at home [at UGA], then I’ll pick it.”

hmmm.. i would love to have a ball hawk in secondary. we hadn’t had cb whose a big threat. maybe Greg/Branden can be those guys.. locked down those receivers. of course, since wr are hard to come by this year, we can always count on one of these guys to play O if we need’em to.

Reid was a life long Gator fan that was scared away by the depth of the Florida defense. The #1 thing that all prospects look at is getting a chance at early playing time. Meyer told he kid he would have to earn his way onto the field and that is why he dropped the Gators. Kids don’t want to compete for anything anymore. Anyway…I hope the kid makes the right decision for himself and has a good college career.

Greg … you have a wonderful God given talen for football. I pray you will make the most of the football aspect of your life. I also pray you will make the most of the life development portion of your life. Coach Mark Richt is a molder of men. He is a man of integrity, honesty, comittment and quality. He can make a lot of difference in your football career and in your life. I think this factor is very important in your decision. We need you at UGA … you and Branden will be a force to be reckoned with for the next few years. As UGA seeks keys to the future … you could be a very important one … one that unlocks the type of season every Georgia fan wants to experience.

Praying for you … praying you make the choice you need to make for a bright future.

I enjoy reading these tidbits or nuggets of inside information that these idiots have. Yeah Greg Reid is scared of competition thats why he didn’t pick Fla…yeah that makes alot of sense. And Coach Meyer told him he would have to earn his spot?? Where you there to hear that, you jackass! You sound like a jilted lover or something.

And wherever Reid goes he is going to have to earn his spot and he’s been doing that everywhere from peewee to now. So STFU to dumb@$$

Hey, Kevin, you are the jackass. This week, in the Gainesville Sun, Greg Reid told a writer why he dropped Florida. He said he wanted Meyer to tell him he would most likely start next year at Florida. Meyer said it would be hard for him to beat out Jenkins and Haden (since both will be all SEC next year) and that the Gators had a lot of talent behind them as well (Will Hill, M. Anderson, Jermey Brown, Wonde-Pierre Lewis, Moses Jenkins, and Bushnell (resshirt freshman). Meyer also told him that if theat he did not reaffirm his commitment that weekend, the Gators were moving on. Yeah, Meyer revealed his true colors…that he is straight forward with recruits and does not lie by telling them they will start when he knows different. This was in the article and Reid confirmed this in the paper. Since Reid left campus, the Gators immmediately began recruiting other CB prospects very actively, including the #1 cornback in the country (Dre Kirpatrick). Even the other CB recruit commitment (Teague from Tenn) is having second thoughts because of the Gator depth at CB. Reid would have not started at Florida for 2 or 3 years. That is why he is considering Georgia and FSU…for he will start right away at those schools. He will also be a “cancer” on any team he signs with…you watch. This kid is all about “me”…and that is another reason Meyer soured on him. So Kevin, who is the jackass?

MDB,

Depth chart is not the #1 reason why a high school football player elects any college. Go pickup the most recent Sports Illustrated. SI did an in depth report and it has been determined that the most important factor is approximity to home. They went conference by conference , and team by team. Even breaking down UGA recruting success instate and out of state.

Also what coach ever tells a kid that all you have to do is walk in and I’ll play you. This is essentially what you have implied with your comment. Outside of Ed O at Ole Miss with Brent Schaeffer I cannot think of another example. They all have to earn playing time!

Also go check my blog out….

Tampa Gator,

Why lie? Greg Reid did not say that. I just reviewed the Gainesville Sun article you refered to. He asked only about playing time as a freshman. Nowhere was it about starting.

This week, in the Gainesville Sun, Greg Reid told a writer why he dropped Florida. He said he wanted Meyer to tell him he would most likely start next year at Florida.

Common man, your better than that. Do not let the facts get in your way. The kid may be a bad able, may flame out, you never know but don’t sound jilted over the young mans choice.

By toALLflaFANS

January 29, 2009 7:43 AM | Link to this

Please just SHUT UP and quit making yourselves look like fools. Saban told the kid and yes he’s a KID, that he would have to earn it and Reid said he liked that. So shut up about him NOT wanting to compete, that is just ignorant and makes you look stupid. So you lost ONE recruit at a position you CLAIM that you do not need yet you are scrambling trying to find another CB almost as bad as UGA is searching for another WR. So please grow up and grow a pair and quit picking on a KID.

As a Dawg Fan, I am excited to know that Reid could possibly be in a Georgia uniform, however the fact that this guys comes with a lot of baggage concerns me. I believe in allowing kids a chance to do better in their life. Sometimes it takes bad situations for young people to learn from their mistakes and be better. If he comes to Athens Reid and Branden will be a corner duo to watch, even as freshmen. Brendan will be an instant producer on special teams. We have a lot of question marks though and it starts with Joe Cox. Will he produce? Who will be the starting tailback? Will the defensive line play better? Will the offensive line be dominate like their talent suggest? Also, what adjustments will the coaching staff make? If I had to grade the coaching last year, I would give them a high D. That is not good enough in the SEC.

Wow….The other day there was an article talking about how much he enjoyed his visit to Alabama and dog fans were ripping this kid apart because he would even consider going to another school outside of the state of GA, especially Alabama. One went as far as to tell Reid if he picked UA to not even bother coming back into the state ever again. Now its like dog fans are begging this kid to come to UGA. I cant say I blame you after seeing the DB’s in Athens last year but I feel the amount of hypocracy on here is about comical. I remember when Ben Jones committed to UGA last year, BAMA fans were nothing but complimentary of UGA and happy for the kid in his selection. On the other hand, UGA fans tear apart a 17 year old and verbally abuse the school he chooses and the fans if he thinks would possibly consider another school when the Almighty Richt offers him a chance to play at UGA. These blogs are beyond comical!

If Reid wants to play in the NFL his best shot is to play at a school that is one of the top NFL producing schools in the country. Especially at CB. Hell the Def. cord. was a D-backs coach. He will likely get starts right away and can head to the NFL as a junior making the big bucks whick I’m sure this kid wants. There is only one major school that fits his NEEDS. That school is Georgia, which just happens to be his HOME STATE. Also in order to be a lock down CB you need another lockdown CB on the field to help take the heat off, he will have that in Branden. It’s a no brainer for Reid, a perfect fit for him. (Watch Hines Ward as he goes for another Ga. Dawg MVP in the super bowl. The Dawgs lead the league in super bowl MVPs. Nuff said.)

Well, if Fla does run the table, it will be a first… they NEVER have and probably never will. Btw, every dawg knows that Reid will probably end up at F$U. He already said he feels ‘at home’ there. Of course, he said the same thing at Fla. One recruit will not make or break anyone’s class unless you are GT and you can only convince ONE kid to commit.

UGA having the last shot means nothing with the coaches they have. THese guys have proven again this year that they not only can’t coach against top coaches, but they can’t recruit against top coaches either. This kid is going to sign with either Fl.State or Al. Just like Jarvis Jones and Marlon Brown both told these clowns yesterday, no thanks, Reid will do the same this weekend. Maybe wonder boy Richt and his coaches can dress up in all black when they go visit the next recruit to see if that helps. THis clown has run out of tricks, and now all he has left is to listen to his coaches and their excuses as to why they get out recruited and outcoached by superior coaching staffs at other big time schools. How is it going to feel UGA fans on FEB 4th, when UGA gets no one, and loses Wooten and probably Lynch. Oh, what ever happened to wonder boy RIcht keeping top talent in the state?? The top 2 defensive players in the state are going elsewhere, but you’ve always got that same old excuse (Can’t get them all). UGA fans deserve Richt and his excuses. Would rather have Saban or Meyer anyday, they don’t make excuses, they make changes and make their programs better. They also can recruit and close the deal on big time recruits. THey sell their coaching ability and their programs, Richt sells the fact that he is now a comedian as well as being a magician. 0for8 good job having the last visit Richt.

That would be like saying the AJC doesn’t favor the Dawgs in most of their articles about college football. (Which is fine with me!)

These papers know who their readers are, c’mon dude?!?!

This kid has to qualify before he can even be considered for playing time, in the first place. I have heard that might be an issue. Maybe not. He’ll have to prove himself regardless of where he decides to go. Watching him play a couple of times, he is a gamer and seems to have a nose for the ball. We need him at UGA. He and Branden would make a great tandem.

I wish him the best with his decision.

This funny when Greg Reid was going to Florida or flurting with Alabama or FSU all the Dawg fans said he was trouble, we don’t want him and he’ll never make his grades. Now all of a sudden he’s great and all the schools outside of Georgia are losing out.

Honestly I have no idea why some of these players want to play for UGA since they will never win a National Championship. UGa will always be second to Florida and now possibly Tenn. If by chance they go to the SEC Championship they will get beat by Bama, LSU or whoever.

Reid would be very smart to come here. Could you imagine he and Branden Smith playing opposite each other in the secondary? They will be phenomenal. We already have a good class coming in and Reid and Charles and Marlon Brown would make it stellar, probably top 5.

Combine that with all the talent already there and we are right up there with Florida and LSU for the next several years.

Reid would probably get immediate playing time as a freshman too with the loss of Asher Allen to the NFL

Meyer is a slimmy greaseball. Nobody should ever play for him.

from AJC Reid joked with friends and classmates at school on Monday, repeatedly saying “Roll Tide.” But he was very serious when he talked about his impression of Alabama coach Nick Saban.

“He wasn’t like some of these other coaches, making all these promises and promises … [Saban] looked me in the eyes and said ‘I can’t really say that you’re going to come in here and start. You’ve got to come here and be ready to compete because the best man plays.’ That’s what I wanted to hear. [Saban] is a straight-up guy. That’s the kind of coach I like.”

The All-America defensive back from Lowndes said he will make an official visit to Georgia on Friday, even though at least a half-dozen schools — including Miami, Auburn, and Tennessee — are trying to bump the Bulldogs out of the way.

Reid claims no favorites among Florida State, UGA and Alabama.

Here is the Article from the Gainesville Sun. Let’s end all speculation:

Greg Reid grew up a Gator. Up until a few weeks ago, you couldn’t find a bigger one anywhere. During his high school career at Valdosta Lowndes, he would celebrate big plays (and there were many) with the Gator chomp. A year ago, the day after signing day, he committed to Florida, becoming the proud first member of the 2009 recruiting class.

In the days and months that followed, he couldn’t say enough good things about Florida. He loved the coaches, he loved the players, he loved the school and the fans. He even tried to convince other top prospects to share the love and join him in Gainesville.

Then, a few hours after his official visit to UF last weekend, all the loved vanished. It was a stunning turnaround, but there was no mystery behind it.

The depth chart did it.

“I mean, with the situation at corner …” the All-America cornerback told Rivals.com. “I asked him (UF coach Urban Meyer) if I would play there (as a true freshman), and he wasn’t sure about it with the freshman (Janoris Jenkins) and the sophomore (Joe Haden) already there.”

Just like that, he scratched his childhood favorite from his list. Now, on Feb. 4, Reid will become a Seminole or a Bulldog (or something else) instead of a Gator.

This is what happens sometimes to elite college football programs with all kinds of returning talent (which UF has).

The depth chart can be a turnoff (and a mind changer).

“It’s a factor with some kids, and there’s nothing you can do about it,” said Allen Wallace, the national recruiting editor for Scout.com. “There is no question that programs that recruit at elite levels every year run into situations where they’re going to lose kids and the major factor is they’re loaded with talent.

“There was a time Miami was so loaded with talent that they hit a stretch where the abundance of it started turning some guys away. That will happen. You can’t ignore that possibility.”

This is where Florida is at, especially on defense, where the Gators basically return their two-deep at every position.

Reid took a look at that depth chart and quickly bolted on the school that started recruiting him in his sophomore year.

It’s happened before, it will happen again.

“Everyone thinks they want to play early. Everyone thinks they are (going to play early),” Scout.com analyst Scott Kennedy said. “But not everybody is going to. For the most part, kids don’t mind waiting their turn. But some kids want to be on the field right away and they’re going to go where they see they have a better chance. The depth chart is part of an informed decision.”

It’s not just happening at UF. Wallace said Southern Cal’s depth chart recently cost the Trojans a top tight end/wide receiver prospect (Alshon Jeffery) who had committed more than a year ago.

“He has been committed for a year-and-a-half,” Wallace said. “And they just lost him to UCLA after the depth chart issue came up.

“But because of USC’s stature, they have a chance to go out and get a replacement who is as good or better. The first person they called was (Tampa Plant tight end/receiver) Orson Charles, who USC wasn’t even recruiting earlier. Now, Charles is going to visit after signing day. The good teams that lose players because of their depth chart usually are going to be able to swoop in on other people.”

Kennedy said that’s what is happening at Florida in the wake of Reid’s defection.

“There are so many good players out there that it’s not going to hurt a team like Florida,” Kennedy said. “In the case of Greg Reid, there are 10 more as good as he is waiting to take his spot.

“The difference between one prospect and the next isn’t that much. It’s what you do with the prospects when you get them.”

Kennedy said that for every player that is turned off by a deep depth chart, there are many other top prospects who aren’t influenced one way or the other by one.

“For the most part, players don’t mind waiting their turn and learning from some players they really look up to,” Kennedy said. “Someone like Tim Tebow or Brandon Spikes. … Those guys are heroes to a lot of kids right now. Do you mind sitting behind Tim Tebow?

“There are kids who are willing to wait knowing they’ll have a chance to play for a national championship and possibly be a first-round draft pick one day. How does USC keep doing it every year? The answer is the same.”

This is how Meyer and the UF coaches are trying to work it. They can’t offer immediate playing time to most prospects, but they can offer even better possibilities in the long run after winning a second national championship in three years.

“Some kids are preoccupied with early playing time,” Wallace said. “Others want to compete at the highest level with the best chance to play for a national championship. A lot of kids want to play for a championship and don’t mind waiting.”

If UF’s depth chart is an issue, it’s a good problem to have, Kennedy said.

“I tell people, ‘If you’re losing guys because your team is too good, then you’re in pretty great shape,’ ” Kennedy said.

Everyone should keep in perspective this is a young man from rural south georgia with meager beginnings that has been thrust into a situation that would be difficult for most anyone. Even with the most grounded of upbringing this can be a tough situation for someone with only the first 17 years of life experience to draw from. He will look back one day and realize how silly most of the recruitment process was. Granted the young man has some character issues, I have seen it first hand. Who among us dosen’t. What he does have is an incredible amount of God given talent. I hope the young man winds up some where that will nurture him, develop him as a man, educate him and equip him for life. What seems to get lost in this situation is everyone is thinking about what Greg Reid can do for them or their team. There is more to life than football, as hard as that is to admit. Greg would be wise to examine all these things and keep them in mind, rather than worrying about playing time and the NFL. Just ask David Pollock.

Does anybody else notice that UG recruits all these great players, but they are are all about ME, not team. They want a place to “showcase my talent”, and couldn’t care less about winning championships as long as they build their rep for the NFL. Reid will fit right in.

nowhere in that article does Reid say that it affected his decision. Meyer is a slimball, everyone knows it.

only a fool becomes anothers slave

Meyer is the penultimate slave master.

We fought a civil war to stop this kind of stuff , but it goes on. Right there in gunsville.

Reid expressed his true feelings here.. that other story is a piecemeal crap to circle the wagons and defend slimball.

He wasn’t like some of these other coaches, making all these promises and promises … [Saban] looked me in the eyes and said ‘I can’t really say that you’re going to come in here and start. You’ve got to come here and be ready to compete because the best man plays.’ That’s what I wanted to hear. [Saban] is a straight-up guy. That’s the kind of coach I like.”

Little dawg, the truth hurts doesn’t it. At least i state facts about Richt and his loser coaches. What do you bring to the table.Nothing, just like Richt and his coaches when they try to get a recruit to commit. OOPS!! Massie just cancelled his trip to UGA this weekend. Told you loser UGA fans that Billy Graham would go 0for8 in closing the last 8 recruits on the UGA board. When will UGA fans face reality about this clown. Massie is going to Al, like I told you on this blog. Can’t wait until next Wednesday to hear all you losers making excuses about how you didn’t want this recruit or can’t get them all, that and wait until next year will always be UGA’s motto.

To Any and ALL Gator fans on here…As a BAMA fan, I dont think he will end up in Tuscaloosa. However, I have no problem with a kid who wants to go to a school where he can both grow as a play under a good coach (Saban, Richt, etc) and also get solid playing time all 4 years he is there. If I am a top flight prospect and the HC of one school is saying you probably wont play with Jenkins and Haden there, why in the world would I want to go there? No school is promising this kid playing time but, no coaches are telling him the he wont play like Meyer is. I find it funny fans can attack a 17 year old kid who is being told he will have to wait 2 of 3 years before he gets significant playing time. Get off your high horses and learn that these are kids who are making the best decision for their future.

A “lifelong fan” of a program is not likely to bolt because of the depth chart or fear of competition. He plays for Lowndes County, a perennial powerhouse in high school football. He’s not afraid of competition. Something happened or was brought to light on his visit to Florida that let him know it was not the place for him. He dropped them like the proverbial hot potato. As stated before, the Gainesville Sun article is geared toward soothing the Gator Nation by stating the obvious (the are deep and talented) and using that as the main reason a top talent did not choose them.

My opinion.

If he can qualify, and is a good character guy, UGA will gladly take him. Richt doesn’t typically take “bad” kids. Most of the infractions against our players have been the underage drinking, or dumb decision variety, things that many on this board could not throw stones at. Michael Lemon had the most egregious offense, and not to try and diminish the severity of what he did, but he had some pretty bad personal tragedy in his recent past that may have had an adverse affect on his psyche.

Go Sooners,

UF ran the table in the SEC in consecutive years in back to back seasons. In 1995 they went 12-0 before getting demolished by Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl. In 1996, they went 11-1 losing to FSU before winning the rematch in the Sugar Bowl for the Title.

Bama did it it 1992 and won it all. So in the last 20 years, 4 teams, Bama, UF, and Auburn ran the table in the SEC.

Reid would be crazy to go to UGA. Besides Champ Bailey, UGA has done nothing at corner and Willie Mart might as well bring in the U-haul.

UGA has 3 corners coming in this class and Reid cooled on UF b/c Meyer told him there was a depth chart to climb. Why, again, would he choose UGA?

W-Mart will be gone after this season anyway, after UGA loses to Tennessee and UF, and a SEC west school (along with the game at OkSt.). UGA will get torched this year and Richt won;t be the one to go and neither will Bobo.

Say what you want, but all dawg homers know that W-mart should have been axed this year. Richt is too good of a guy to voluntarily cut his coaches, and UGA will never NEVER win a national title under Richt. He’s too conservative. WE ALL KNOW IT’S TRUE, so don’t be crazy about this.

Yes, UF is hot right now and in no way will I minimize their accomplishments, but I have to question how far back your memory goes — UGa beat Florida with regularity until Spurrier arrived (meaning for something, like, 80 years) and FSU absolutely owned the Gators from the late 80s until about ‘03. If I recall the stat correctly UF needed their current 5-game win streak against FSU to pull Bowden’s record against them DOWN to .500. So, enjoy it while you’ve got it — UF certainly deserves accolades for their performance of late — but you know the shoe will again switch feet as it has in the past. Best of luck to you.

Go Sooners,

I forgot you guys were on the schedule this year. That could get ugly again. I’m not sure if Shannon will get us back to the top, but he sure will get us close. The whole coordinator search process was very revealing.

I thought Nix was a very bad choice to begin with. GT sucked on offense while he was here although I assumed that was mostly Chan Gaileys doing. Then to have the search for both offense and defense drag on like it did. Whipple may be a good choice, but his heart is in the NFL.

An unspoken truth in this business is you have to keep a list of prospects to replace coaches who leave. It is very apparent Shannon was not prepared for firing Nix or Bill Young’s defection. Sure Shannon can coordinate the defense himself if need be but them he takes away from his big picture responsibilities.

2010 is the year. Harris will be a Junior and the cupboard will be full. He has to win 9-10 games next year though.

Greg Reid is talented, no doubt. He’s one of the fastest human beings I’ve ever seen up close. However, he has character flaws. He’s a ‘look at me’ hotdog, who scrambles to get up from any play he’s involved in, to run and prance across the field with his arms extended or doing the Gator chomp. And, I understand, has grades and study habit issues. I think he was too full of himself for Urban’s liking and is really enjoying the media attention immensely, since he’s put himself to market. Not a humble bone in his body, this one.

Has anybody asked him what his plans are if the NFL doesn’t work out? Has anybody asked what he plans to major in at college?

I don’t have any skin in this game so let me put my two cents in if you don’t mind. Greg’s a good kid and he deserves a break people.

None of you know anything about his background, or what he’s gone through, to get to the point where he’s put himself in the position to be considered for a scholarship to so many top Universities.

Those of you who speak ill about Greg’s grades, a bad attitude, criminal activities, or whatever else crazy thing you can think of should spend a few minutes with this young man before you judge him.

Whomever Greg decides to sign with will be quite fortunate, and I’m quite sure that he’ll continue to work just as hard once he gets on Campus as he has these past several years to get to this point.

Um, it seems to me that UGA has been able to match the talent with most schools of-late. Our issue is being able to coach that talent up to their potential.

I really hope Greg is as tough as he thinks he is. I appreciate the fact that he was a great HS player but apparently he is afraid of a little bit of competition. Get rid of the ego Greg or you will struggle no matter where you go.
