Heritage TE commits to East Carolina over SEC school
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Heritage tight end Justin Jones committed to East Carolina over Vanderbilt Thursday evening.
“[ECU head coach] Skip Holtz and offensive coordinator Steve Shankweiler were in today and Justin committed during his in-home visit with them,” Heritage assistant coach Chris Pack said.
Despite in home visits from Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson and assistant coach Des Kitchings yesterday, Pack said he did not think the 6-foot-8, 252-pound senior “wanted to go to prep school.”
“I thought he would commit to ECU after his visit,” he said.
Jones had an official visit scheduled for Vanderbilt this weekend but Pack does not think he is going to take it now.
Jones was an early commitment to Kentucky but backed off to consider other schools.

Georgia Tech target MacMillan commits to Iowa
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Georgia Tech missed out on an important prospect early Thursday when 6-foot-6, 285-pound offensive lineman Nolan MacMillan of The Hun School in Princeton, N.J. committed to Iowa.
He chose the Hawkeyes over Boston College, Georgia Tech and Virginia.
“All four schools did a great job of recruiting him,” The Hun School coach Dave Dudeck told HN.com. “But I will say that Iowa was phenomenal from day one with Nolan.
“He weighed the pros and cons of each place and by the end he found his heart going more and more with Iowa, the coaching staff, players and everything at Iowa. He felt that was the place that he fit the best.”
MacMillan is ranked as the No. 45 prep player in the nation by Rivals.com.

Derrick Favors’ coach “shocked” over firing of UGA coach
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
The basketball coach of No. 1 recruit Derrick Favors was “shocked, surprised and little disappointed” to see UGA fire basketball coach Dennis Felton on Thursday.
Favors, who committed to Georgia Tech over UGA, had developed a close friendship with Felton during the recruiting process, his coach said.
“We didn’t see it coming,” South Atlanta coach Michael Reddick said. “I was actually shocked, surprised, and a little disappointed. We got to know [Felton] very well. It’s an unfortunate situation.”
“I can see both sides of him getting fired. He was brought in there to clean up the program and put a lot of things in place to do it. However, he lost two of his best players because of the things he put into place. If Billy Humphrey and Mike Mercer were there, things would never be going the way they are going.
“I think the pressure [to fire Felton] came more from the outside, based directly on his win-loss record rather than what he was brought in to do. I guarantee you this: A year from now, or maybe two at the latest, this same Georgia team will be taking a totally different path with the same players.”
Favors also considered Memphis and N.C. State. But what if he had picked UGA? Would he be changing his mind now? His coach isn’t sure.
“Derrick is a special case because he’s a special kid, but that’s what I tell all the kids — pick the university and not the basketball coach,” Reddick said. “I read somewhere that the average basketball coach lasts around three years, with the exception of the big schools that keep a coach forever. In other words, if you sign with a particular college, you can almost count on playing for a different coach at some point during your four years.”

North Gwinnett cornerback to visit Illinois State
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
North Gwinnett cornerback Robert Nelson has narrowed his choices to Louisiana Monroe and Illinois State, according to Bulldogs coach Bob Sphire. Nelson, who visited Louisiana Monroe two weeks ago, will head to the Normal, Ill., campus this weekend for his last official visit.
Nelson, 5-11, 175-pounds, was an important member of the North Gwinnett defense, returning two interceptions for touchdowns on a team that reached the Class AAAAA quarterfinals.
“He’s a play-maker; he’s a very skilled, speed athlete,” Sphire said.
Sphire said Nelson hasn’t decided which school to sign with.
“He’s going to make his decision Monday,” he said.

Georgia coach Mark Richt keeps them laughing with road act
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Georgia coach Mark Richt is legendary for always doing humorous things to lighten up the atmosphere when making in-home visits with prospects.
Troup offensive lineman Chris Burnette said Richt was in his living room when his five-year old sister had her toy cellphone ring. “For whatever reason, she handed it to [Richt], and he acted like he was talking to someone for a few minutes. That had everybody rolling.”
Richt was visiting tight end Arthur Lynch of Dartmouth, Mass., when a movie awards show was on TV. Said Lynch, “He joked that not only was he a football coach, he was also an Academy Award winner,” referring to his cameo appearance in “Facing The Giants.”
“Nobody in my family had seen the movie, now we all want to see it,” Lynch said.

North Atlanta QB has picked school, but not telling anybody
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
North Atlanta quarterback Jamal Londry-Jackson waited a long time before scholarship offers started coming his way. But now everyone else will have to wait until signing day to find out where he’s going.
Londry-Jackson said over the weekend, after a visit to Appalachian State, that he had narrowed his list to App State, North Carolina A&T and Tennessee State. He had a total of nine scholarship offers.
Now he says he has made his final selection. But he won’t reveal his choice until Feb. 4.
“I’ve made my choice but I’m going to wait,” said Londry-Jackson, who has said previously that he was leaning toward Tennessee State.

UGA has prime position in recruiting Lowndes DB Greg Reid
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Greg Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year, admits that UGA has an advantage by being the last college he visits before signing day.
“It’s a big factor, let me tell you,” Reid said. “Georgia is coming to do an in-home visit on Thursday [in Valdosta]. Then on Friday, I’ll go to Athens for my visit. I’ll be at Georgia all day Saturday, and then at Georgia on Sunday morning … probably pulling out of there around noon. That’s a lot of Georgia over the next few days.”
Other colleges will be able to contact Reid, the All-America cornerback from Lowndes, on Sunday night. Then the NCAA’s “dead” period begins on Monday.
“Basically, I have really only have one day [Monday] to really think about everything, because I’m going to pick my school on Tuesday, and then sign on Wednesday [Feb. 4].”
Reid, who claims no favorites, has already visited his other finalists, Florida State and Alabama. He gave UGA the last weekend on his recruiting schedule.
“That’s what a lot of people have told me, since Georgia is my final visit, and they have the chance to make the last impression on me, that Georgia is the school that I’m going to pick,” Reid said.
“If I feel comfortable and at home [at UGA], then I’ll pick it.”
