Heritage TE commits to East Carolina over SEC school

Heritage tight end Justin Jones committed to East Carolina over Vanderbilt Thursday evening.
“[ECU head coach] Skip Holtz and offensive coordinator Steve Shankweiler were in today and Justin committed during his in-home visit with them,” Heritage assistant coach Chris Pack said.
Despite in home visits from Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson and assistant coach Des Kitchings yesterday, Pack said he did not think the 6-foot-8, 252-pound senior “wanted to go to prep school.”
“I thought he would commit to ECU after his visit,” he said.
Jones had an official visit scheduled for Vanderbilt this weekend but Pack does not think he is going to take it now.
Jones was an early commitment to Kentucky but backed off to consider other schools.

What does this comment mean? He couldn’t get admitted to Vandy? He’s a Prop 48?

I believe that the “Pirate Nation” outnumbers the “vanderbilt nation”. My question is..Can he play basketball too??

There may be trepidation over Vandy academics but Jones is no fool. He’ll be on the field in ‘09.

HA HA yes he can play b-ball…had 22 pts, 21 boards and 7 blocked shots the other night. Way to go Justin. Proud of you. And no, he’s not a prop 48…

Justin is not prop 48, Vandy wanted him to go to prep school to get his test score up. he is a NCAA qualifier, but Vandy’s accademic standards are much higher than most other schools. This will be a GREAT fit for Juston and I hope he does well!

Sorry folks but I don’t see this one. Let’s see, a degree from Vanderbilt or a degree from ECU? Sure, he’ll be on the field in 2009, but where will he be in 2019? AND, which is more important? This is not meant to be a criticism of ECU. Let’s face it, a degree from Vandy is one of the most valuable degrees in the country. I think he’s making a mistake.

Hello, please help me someone. I went and watched 3 Heritage games this year because I live close by and I honestly don’t see it with this kid. Can someone give me some stats on him??? I heard the hype on him at the begining of the year but at those 3 games I honestly didn’t see it. Maybe ECU and Vandy saw the 6’8 252lbs and hoped they can add some weight and turn him into something but I never saw the kids catch a ball those 3 games. Not downing the kid just want some stats on him.

hey dawg tired… your degree is what you make of it… i got my degree from ECU and now own a global consulting firm.. i owe alot to the education i received at ECU..not to say vanderbilt isn’t an excellent school, but please don’t underestimate the education these kids are getting at ECU… we have over 26000 students, a med school, and soon to have a dentistry school…

Pirateman - Trust me, I live in Eastern NC. I am very familiar with the quality of an ECU education (I’m a law professor). As I stated earlier, no criticism of ECU intended, a degree from Vanderbilt is simply one of the most valuable degrees in the country. Given the choice of a free ride at Vandy or ECU, I would advise the KId to go to Vandy. Again, nothing against ECU which provides opportunities to many kids to get a fine education they may not have otherwise been able to get. BUT, Vandy it ain’t.

to Jason…you didn’t see him catching the ball in those three games you watched because he was on defense all year… you dork! BTW, his first year on DE he ended up with 77 tackles, 22 for a loss, 10.5 sacks, 5 forced fumbles, 4 fumbles recoveries, one ran back for touchdown. Did you see any of that?

Seriously its really sad when people bash a 17 year old kid for making the hardest decision in his life. He made the best decision for him. And to Jason- Justin was the most impressive player i saw all year, If you dont see a division 1 player when you watch him play then you dont know football

Coach Holtz and staff are great at spotting talent. I am sure part of this kids reason for picking ECU was the quality of the coaching staff and a “put football first school.” Type of education? Heck, Vince McMahon got his business degree here and we trained Sandra Bullock to act.

I didn’t down the poor 17 year old kid.. All I said is he was recruited as a TE.. I never saw him catch a pass. As for Dawgfan88 I was a Div 1 player so don’t even go there. I also help many schools scout other teams. Now lets be real serious with this. His size got him the scholarship. If he was so great on DE like your stats say he would have been recruited as a DE all over the country with his size. I can line up any 6’8” 17 yr old kid and have scholarship offers coming to him everyday. Dawgfan88 don’t you think he would have got multiple scholarships from much prominent programs if he was really all that.. He’s not all that and thats why ECU and Vandy recruited him.. Not UGA, UF, BAMA, UT, Texas, OSO, USC.

Jason: FYI, he was recruited as a TE from what he had proven in camps and combines all over the southeast area in his Junior year. His HS coach switched him to DE after spring practice, for whatever reason. He has proven to be more of just a kid with size for all the scholly offers that he did get. Including, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vandy, and those are just the SEC offers. Not to mention at least a dozen and a half others that he didn’t brag about. If you would like to know how many other All-state and All- Area, and All-Combine and All-Camp Teams he had made as a TE…I would be glad to list them. PS…We love our haters!!!
