UGA considers chasing one of Tennessee’s WR commitments

UGA, after being jilted by two prospects at wide receiver within a 48-hour span, may have found another candidate at the position: Philadelphia’s Je’Ron Stokes, who is committed to Tennessee.

Stokes told the AJC that he talked with UGA wide receivers coach Tony Ball on late Tuesday night about making a last-minute trip to Athens this weekend. Stokes is ranked as the nation’s No. 104 overall prospect by Rivals.

“He [Ball] said he loved my film, and that he definitely wanted bring me in on an official visit,” Stokes said. “He said he had to talk with [UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo] to see exactly what’s going on, and he would let me know something for sure by [Wednesday].”

If Georgia invited Stokes for a visit, would he accept? “Yes, I think would do that.”

If Georgia offered a scholarship to Stokes, would he accept it? “I would go there and check things out. And then I would pray about it and see where God leads me.”

UGA hasn’t had much luck luring wide receivers since Sunday: Dacula native Cameron Kenney committed to Oklahoma over the Bulldogs, while Miller Grove’s Stephen Hill decided to stick with archrival Georgia Tech.

There have also been rumors that UGA may contact Henry County’s Jamal Patterson, who is committed to Stanford.

Here’s the quick story on Stokes: He committed to Tennessee last spring and had an official visit with the Volunteers in September, but has been checking out other schools since the coaching change. He traveled to Michigan and Illinois the last two weeks. On Tuesday, he couldn’t call UGA until very late because Michigan coach Rich Rodriquez was at his Pennsylvania house for most of the evening.

The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Stokes is ranked as the country’s No. 14 wide receiver by Rivals.

He said Bobo requested senior film last week and that he had been anxious to hear back from the Bulldogs. “I’ve always liked Georgia because they’re a good school, a powerhouse in the SEC. They’ve got so much talent coming in, and already there.”

Dear Mr. Stokes,

Aside from the coaching change Atop Rocky, your heart lead you to Tennessee in the first place for a reason. To disrupt the natural flow of a gut instinct is to toy with fate. Remember, no matter where you decide to go, change may occur. It’s one of the unknown factors of life. Ask Eric Berry. As an ex-CEO once told my company in a day gone by, ‘Be receptive to change’. The company still exsists and thrives. Tennessee may very well be your place to thrive amid the changes. Best of luck.

Je’Ron(Nice Name), I guarantee you that the Reverand Richt will have you convinced that God has spoken to you DIRECTLY and told you to attend the University of Georgia. With Tommy Bowden no longer on the scene and Poppa Bowden drifting off into a permanent stupor, that leaves the Master of the FCA as the preeminent coaching Elmer Gantry in college football. ONLY Mark Richt can lead you to what is the Answer. He has superior prayer services to any other coach in the Southeast. Those other guys rarely speak out on their beliefs—Of course guys like Stoops, Carroll, Saban, Miles, Tressel and Meyer seem to win more games—you can’t trust them. Come to Athens. Listen to what you are hearing.

How much of these last minute offers and looks for WR is due to J. Eason dropping the ball (pun not intended). Sounds like coach Ball has had to do a lot of scrambling. We are very thin at WR.

Wow, UGA’s last minute efforts seem problematic — in the sense that we are going after prospects at the last minute! WTF? Now it seems really prophetic (and pathetic) that BAMA took the State’s best WR prospect without UGA even raising a brow, and still never offered. Maybe that kid (Bowman) had problems, grades, life issues, but BAMA has him, and we have Wooten (and everybody is watching him to see if he jilts us on Feb 4).

Did Garner drop this one? Was he too busy interviewing, being courted by other schools to worry about doing his job? This could be bad, real bad, like the year Donnan got no OL recruits.

YellerSkeeters, How come I never noticed you on this blog until recently? It see your posts all the time now. Anyway, I don’t think Dawgs are in that much trouble at WR. Wooten committed, and we can only offer scholarships to other guys one-at-a-time.
Worst case scenario: no receivers sign with UGA this year. We still have a good group of experienced receivers for this season, and then we’ll make receivers the top priority for the next class.
The Donnan OL disaster was much worse. Donnan probably needed to sign at least 5 OLs that year and got zero.

THIS is what happens when Rodney Garner spends the last two months applying for every vacant job to leverage a pay raise at Georgia, and Coach Eason is . .. .. napping everywhere

UNACCEPTABLE!!! How can Oklahoma beat Georgia on a Georgia kid Kenny when OU offered the kid only 10 days ago while Georgia was on him all along? And don’t even get me started on Stephen Hill … a four-star WR going to a school that doesn’t even use WRs?

Why do we have to scramble to get a TOP NOTCH wide out? We run a PRO style offense.Have we lost focus AGAIN? I guess it was a bad time to change coaches. We get a 5-star last year cause he didn’t want to go to SC and we were close to home.

I hope someone from the UGA sports information office is looking at this blog. If this is strategy to throw people off “GREAT”! If this information is getting out and it is true “BAD”! Why do we have to know everyone UGA is recruiting. Aren’t there any secrets any longer? Geeee’s this makes UGA coachs look very bad. Again, I question CMR strategy here.

Is it a possibility we might be recruiting back-up WRs right now? Some of these kids see that AJ Green has 2 more years as our #1 which means they will be battling for #2 at best for the next couple of years. Regardless though, I would like to see us start landing some guys. Go Dawgs!

This does look a little damaging. however, I do feel the focus should be up front as far as recruiting is concerned. We have three receivers that never saw the field last year. They were recruited so use them! AJ will probably bolt after next season like all Georgia players seem to do now a days, but the guys they recruited last year and the year before that should be ready by now. the worst case scenario is that you have a multu talented kid in Branden Smith coming in who you promised that you would make him the next Champ Bailey. Get the kid the ball! He is a BEAST of an athlete. There are things Georgia can do to make up for the receiver deficiency. Use some of these backs in the receiver slot. They have 5 highly recruited running backs on their roster. Use them! Unless they are changing their entire phylosophy and thinking about going to a 5 receiver set, they never use more than 3 receivers at a time. If it’s that much of a a problem, start recruiting receivers now for next year at the reciever position. There are a lot of talented guys out there.

Some observations: (1) The kid should stick to his commitment;(2)Isn’t the rule that you can’t “bolt” to the NFL until you’ve been in school three years? (Thereffore, AJ can’t “bolt” until 2010); & (3) Criticizing a man because of his faith is classless.

We are not thin at wide reciever, and have several that saw playing time last season that can play. Chris Durham, Israel Troupe, Tavares King, A.J. Greene, Michael Moore, Tony Wilson. We have more recievers with game experience, than we have QB’s to throw to them. we’ll be fine in the recieving dept! How about that Arron White he can line up reciever or tight end and can catch from either one!!

Join AJ Green and two of the hottest QB prospects in the nation!

BTW - The Tech students who are accused of plotting terrorist acts in this country have decided to defend themselves in court instead seeking council. Good move, NOT!

Tony Ball is a joke and a liar, not to mention a terrible recruiter. For this guy to tell Stephen Hill that he was his #1 choice all along is a flat out lie, and thank God the kid saw through this loser’s lies. UGA can now finish this class with absolutely no w.r., and the UGA fans will once again see how great these clown coaches that UGA has are at closing the deal on these top recruits. When they can’t even convince a kid from Ga. to pick them over Ga.Tech, then it shows how terrible they are at recruiting. Ga’s offense throws the ball all over the field, and Tech never throws the ball in it’s offense, yet these coaches can’t even get a wide receiver to commit to them over Tech. Richt should once again be proud of his overpaid, arrogant so called coaches he has on his staff. Can’t wait to hear all the excuses on Feb 4th from Richt and his coaches as to why UGA lost the last 8 prospects that they wanted in this year’s class. It is only a matter of time before UGA’s fans see through Richt and his pathetic coaches, and begin to put some heat on Evans to make some changes. I said before, Richt has taken this program as far as he can, and it is only going to get worse over the next 2or3 years. Meyer, Saban, P.J, and now the new coaching staff at Tenn, and Auburn are better than what UGA has, yet RIcht stays loyal to these losers, and doesn’t make any changes. UGA fans are seeeing those results in recruiting and you will continue to see it on the field next year. BOOBOO and Martinez will get out coached in ever big game again, and UGA want have Stafford&Moreno to bail them out. THis year, Kentucky, Auburn,Tenn, and LSU will all be losses. Hope UGA fans will be happy then. See you on Feb. 4th when all the excuses start to show up on these blogs.

There is a lot of truth in what Who cares is saying. As much as I love the bulldawgs, I just think that Florida, Alabama, Lsu, and even Tennessee have better coaches. Getting top recruits is great, but these guys still need to be coached. We saw this year on the defense. Georgia’s starting defense this year was full of 4 and 5 star recruits and they got their behinds handed to them. One of the worse defenses in UGA history. Someone needs to coach these guys the right way. Florida beats us every year because they out coach us. This receiver Stephen Hill. I am glad the kid stuck with Tech. A better offense to suit him would have been to bolt to Georgia, but he and his parents saw right through the lies of Georgia coaches. They never seriously recruited the guy and now all of the sudden they say he is a priority, some schools like USC, LSU and Ohio State can get away with that, but not Georgia. It’s sad and the worse part about it is that Rict is a good man but not a national championship type coach. I like him as a person or even an offensive coordinator, but he dosent go for it. He settles for 10 point wins instead of beating a team by 30. The BCS is what it is and Oklahoma had tobet everyone by 62 points to get to the national championship and they went for it. The Alumni and Administrators at Georgia loves Rict, because nuthing really embarrasing happens with the football team eexcept for the ocassional arrest, but thats ok because it happens at all the universities. They will never fire the guy and really i dont blame them because who would you replace him with?

By Cameron

January 28, 2009 8:53 AM | Link to this

who cares:

You are an idiot. First of all, our coaches do not lie to recruits. Coach Ball never told Stephen Hill that he was his first choice all along. Our first choice all along at wide receiver was and is Marlon Brown. “When they can’t even convince a kid from Ga. to pick them over Ga.Tech, then it shows how terrible they are at recruiting.” We couldn’t convince him becuase we came after him at the last minute, after he had been waiting for months on an offer. The only reason we kept him interested was for a backup plan anyway. He felt wanted at Tech, not at UGA. “and the UGA fans will once again see how great these clown coaches that UGA has are at closing the deal on these top recruits.” Check the recruiting rankings this year, and the past seven years. We don’t seem to have a problem closing on kids. The ones we lost, we really didn’t have a chance with in the first place. Some kids have their mind made up to begin with that they want to get away from home. Check your facts.

350 LB female, wears tent sized moomoo’s and eats gallons of ice cream daily. Hates UGA because she was ostracized several years ago for her weight, face and personality. Has found a wonderful and faceless venue from which to “get even” with all the beautiful people. Has a few loser “friends” on the internet chat rooms that went to tech for a quarter where they all felt “accepted” so that is now her scool of choice. What do a UGA fan and tech fan have in common?

I see no possible way the Vols could not improve. Hopefully Kiffen can at least field some better players, whether he can coach or not. This last year my Vols could not score in a Mexican cathouse with a new hundred dollar bill taped to their foreheads. Defeense good, offense would have had to improve dramatically just to really suck. But next year who knows?

Regarding the Dawgs, this coming year is a season your coaches are going to have to step up. With the talent you have had on both sides of the ball, you should have been better than the scores indicated…and now much of it will be playing on Sunday. This year you have a lot of “raw” talent. What Richt, Bob, and Martinez do with it will determine whether you are champs or just “also rans” to the Gators again.

To GT Fan - You don’t seem to understand much about Christianity. Being a Christian simply means one’s sins, past present and future have been forgiven by grace through the blood of Christ. It does not mean one is without sin. Non-Christians always like to call any frailty or imperfection in a Christian hypocrisy. Wrong! That is simply the human condition, we are all sinners. The only difference is that Christians are forgiven.

Having said all that, I’m reasonably sure that Coach Richt would not condone lying to a recruit. We do not know exactly what has actually been said to these recruits by anyone.

Finally, I will say that, while I am a life long fan of UGA, I do not like this going after someone else’s commitments for several reasons. First, we should be above that (plus it is a bad witness from a Christian perspective). Second, I don’t want a kid that can’t keep his word (character problem). However, that’s just my humble opinion. In addition, it is totally irrelevant that other schools try to pick off other schools’ commitments. Two (or more) wrongs do not make a right.

Georgia is loaded at WR. They could skip out on WR the next two classes and be fine. You people are idiots.

Right on Time and I are not the same poster, RAMBLE ON. But their insight is uncanny, I take it?

I reserve the right to respond to stupidity when I read it from you or BaseballVol13. “His” posts go way beyond ignorant and obscene, and yours are only meant to incite others to stoop to your level in their response. Blogs about current happenings turn into name-calling and mud slinging from most of the GT folks who seem to think last years’ game signaled some fork in the road for the UGA program. You guys are so obsessed with our football program, it’s pretty pathetic, but understandable considering what your program has been the past decade.

That said, you’re right about wasting my time naming you two in my responses, so I will stop doing that effective immediately.

Back to the original topic - Kiffin has both of his hands in the cookie jar. All’s fair in recruiting and football, I guess. UGA pursuing this player has nothing to do with Christian values and all that some of these other folks are trying to imply.

Now MoDawg you said ” Blogs about current happenings turn into name-calling”, but you called someone a “homo” did you not?

Right On Time…”correcting others spelling mistakes”. What you talkin bout Willis!!! You are confusing me with one of your fleabags, please be specific.

I agree correcting someone’s typo is bush league.

Everybody has an opinion, so here is mine. Georgia did not have many scholarships to offer this year at the beginning of the recruiting process. Mark Richt does not offer schollys and then rescind them like other coaches, he sticks to his offer if he made it. Some of these late scholarships became available because of the guys that left for the NFL or those that left the team, so now we are trying to fill them with good recruits. Boys, it ain’t the end of the world, just the world of college football recruiting. We got a good team, a good coach and a good recruiting class. Enjoy!!!

GEN NEYLAND????

Mediocrity a few years back was losing 6 straight to the SEC East. Your fear of the Big Orange is evident. You’ll meet up with us on your way back down the ladder as we ascend. That my friend, is fate… A question of mine at the beginning of 2008 was who will take home the SECC hardware first, Tebow or Stafford. The answer came in December. The next question followed suit. The answer came in January. Now, I’m no Gator hater nor am I a Gator rooter, but as of today, we’ll all be playing for second place in the East in 2009…

You are right on point with your posting. That’s all of what this is about nothing more, nothing less.

My apologies to anyone that I called a name, past or present. It will not happen again. No need for me to “take the bait” that others cast out there.

Sincerest apologies.

Is this a football blog or a jankin’ contest. I come here to read about and discuss football. Some of you cowards just seem to come here to spew venom anonymously.

As a few other bloggers have pointed out what is the obsession you techies have with UGA. Jeeesh, you win 9 games in a season and manage to beat your in-state rival for the first time this century, and all of a sudden you puff out your chests and claim superiority? Come on, beat us two of three and we will admit it’s a real rivalry again. And when did Paul Johnson become Vince Lombardi? And another thing, Georgia is currently ranked in the top 10 on most recruiting sites and GT is ….not even in the top 25.

I used to think that the Gaytor and *Cocks fans were the most obnoxious but I’m moving the GT fans to No.1 with a bullet.

1eyedJack,

Yech fans are the most vile, disgusting, arrogant, uninformed fan base in the country. Every fight I’ve ever seen at a GT/UGA game is started by a drunk toolbag that can’t hold his liquior, just to wind up getting his face stomped in right in front of his Indian gf that can’t speak English. They’re cowards, they’re losers and they’re the scum of the earth. I take much enjoyment in their misery and failures. Not just in sports, but in life as well :)

Georgia needs to try and land a “blue chip” Defensive Coord. and Special Teams coach. Until that happens, worrying about the school choice of an unproven 17-year old is a waste of time.

Why is UGA worried about this kid? I though the top ranked WR (Marlon Brown) was a lock.

Dear Everyone - please stop writing to recruits pleading for their services on a message board. They are kids, and the world will still spin if they don’t go to our favorite school of choice.

Honestly, its a little sad…..grown men begging 17/18 year olds to come play ball at their school.

Just sayin….

These message boards always turn into ripping each other, why can’t you guys talk recruiting/football without putting each other down, the fact of the matter is I do not believe anything a 17/18 year old kid says, I will welcome them with open arms the 4th of February.

I hope we land Stokes! Has anyone seen his tape? Pretty impressive! ESPNU has him ranked as the #8 receiver in the nation. He would make a great addition to our offense. He also has a little brother who plays QB that will be a senior in HS next year. Already on the ESPNU 150 watch list for next year. Could be another addition for the Bulldogs recruiting class next year.

Hey guys! Just reading all of your post about the worry of UGA not signing another wide receiver in this class. I think Georgia has a real good shot at adding, Aaron Murray’s teamate, Orson Charles from Plant High. I know he’s listed at TE by all of the recruiting services, but this guy is not called “Baby T.O.” for no reason. He’s 6-3 227 lbs running 4.5 forties at the combines!!! I think Richt and Bobo would love to split this physcical athelete outside with A.J. Green and Co. and let him go up and get the rock. Georgia committ, Aaron Murray has been pursuing him hard also. These guys just won their state championship and would love to hook up for TD’s together at the college ranks as teammates. Murray has said that Charles likes UGA more than he is letting on. He is just taking all of his visits and seeing what else is out there. So, until signing day gets here, no need to worry. Georgia will sign another top notch at receiver. Hopefully by landing Marlon Brown or Orson Charles. Maybe both.

BaseballVol, I guess arguing with you about who they’re going to sign with would be useless, because the fact is nobody knows for sure what these kids will do come signing day. All I know is that your good ole “rocky top” offense didn’t turn out two 1,000 yard wide out’s last season. I’m just trying to think what these guys ultimately want and that’s probably to play in the NFL. Not saying that UGA is the only school that can put them there, but lets face it… Tennessee isn’t known for putting a lot of wide receivers in the pros! I know Kiffin runs more of a pro style offense, but he has yet to call his first game in the SEC!!! A lot of unknowns. Will see come signing day!
