UGA courts Carver LB Jarvis Jones one last time

UGA coach Mark Richt met with the state’s top uncommitted prospect Jarvis Jones Wednesday afternoon at Carver-Columbus High School.

“They are selling their program,” Carver coach Dell McGee said. “There is not a lot of time left.”

McGee said the 6-foot-4, 226-pound senior met with Richt and assistant coaches John Lilly and John Jancek for about 30 minutes.

“They have an in-home visit with him later,” he said.

Jones is taking his last official visit to LSU this weekend. He has already made trips to Georgia, Texas, Florida and Southern Cal.

Florida is considered by many to be the school to beat for Jones, but he claims no favorites and will announce on Feb. 4.

Yep, it’s either Florida or USC for this guy. Good luck, except for when you play the Dawgs!!!

Is there really any base to the rumors that he’s likely going to Florida or is that just another case of people who try to pretend they have ‘inside info’.

RealityYech, You live on the DAWGBLOG, because in your heart you wanna switch! It’s o.k., we all sell out everyday, might as well be on the winning team! I tell you what, when he commits to the Dawgs, you can make your official commitment too.

Halsey, I did read that he did not want to play too close to home. There is always the occasional kid that wants to venture out and see a little more of the world. There are pros and cons to that, stay home and be one of the favorite sons for life, or go spread your wings, this is your paid ticket to do it..

Jones looks like a very good prospect, but we already have 3 LBs committed in this class. If all of them sign we will have 12 in the program and only 2 seniors next year. I’m not saying I don’t want him to commit, but we need WR, DB, and linemen more than LBs. You can never have too many lineman, as we proved this year on both sides of the ball.

Smart assessment by UGAinATL. It all begins at the line.

Still wondering where Reid will end up, if only to end the suspicion.

Don’t worry chrissy, You’ll get poked a lot this year and not just by Tech. Ga even getting mentioned in the same breath as Texas,Florida & SoCal is folly. Get ready for 6 wins.

2 points about Jarvis Jones: First, there seems to be people that think Jones will play DE in college. Rivals.com now lists him as a DE. Secondly, you can never have enough elite talents. I don’t care if UGA has 10 LB’s committed. If Jones is one of the elite LB’s in the country, UGA should be after him. The Dawgs have been after him hard for a reason. Hopefully he would live up to his billing, unlike the last highly touted DE/LB that came to UGAL Brandon Miller.

What does Georgia see in Washaun Ealey at 4.78 in the 40. I’ve watched him play two games and was not overly impressed. Heck, PJ Green out of Rome High runs that time and is not considered a top prospect. With PJ’s stats over the past three seasons in AAAA, I wonder what he could have done in A ball. But you never know

Jeff, If you don’t know what UGA sees in Washaun Ealey then no amount of words could ever explain it to you. You can start with time in the 40 isn’t everything. Moreno didn’t have what one would describe as blazing speed but he certainly did okay at UGA. The UGA coaches consistently do a great job of recruiting so ya might trust that they know what they are doing. At the end of signing day, you will see UGA in the top 5 recruiting classes again this year.

Jones is a lifelong Gator fan. He is desparetly needed at DE by the Dawgs, not LB - LSU has last shot, and many times that is a strong positive - we’ll see where he ends up.

UGAinATL, Actually UGA is recruiting Jarvis Jones as a DE. We’re deep at DE too, but the DE spot didn’t pick up where Marcus Howard left off. Of course, injuries was the main factor. I’m hoping Roderick Battle will be healthy to anchor one side. Maybe if Jarvis can come in and add some spark. But, I would be surprised if he signed with GA. I heard he grew up a gator fan. So, Gator will be hard to beat for his service.

Looking forward to see what Cornelius Washington brings to the table this season. He’s a gifted talent. Justin Houston better step up his game or he’ll get demoted by younger guys waiting in the wing. Darius Dewberry has also welcomed a plan to move to DE.

Go Dawgs Stay Healthy!

What? If Richt had signed all white boys they would send in the National Guard and FBI, not to mention the furor from all the other groups including the NCAA. I’m not afraid to say it to anybody. This double standard really only serves to polarize. Let’s just have a quota system with a proportionate number of whites in all sports.

Something to think about: USC lost 3 senior linebackers, two will be first round draft choices! The Trojans have first class linebackers in place right now, but a top recruit like Jones will be most welcome! If USC truly wants Jones, they will come get him! We came to Georgia for a 3 year starter at defensive end remember? Pete loves great players, no matter where they come from! Still a ‘Georgia Boy’ at heart so GO DAWGS!!!

I don’t know about us being in the top 5, but I do know about Ealey. He holds state records for most TDs in a season and carrier. He had almost 8’000 yards rushing in his carrier and he rarely played all 4 quarters of the regular season games. His coach said he only played about 25 of 40 quarters in the 07 regular season, so he was not padding his stats in the 4th quarter. I don’t think your boy PJ Green had stats like that. He was also part of the UA All-American game, so I guess a lot of people saw something in him. I don’t know if you are a UGA fan, but it looks like you grabbed the one bad thing about the kid you could find and posted it. He could be great, average, or a bust. I don’t know, but he is worthy of a scholarship at UGA. You might want to check Ealey out on youtube as well. Next time, do a little digging, and maybe you want end up asking stupid questions. Oh, and some RB that played at UGA when they won a NC also played class A ball. I think he also got one of those neat little statues for being the best player in the country as well.

By Hope Lange

January 28, 2009 11:07 PM | Link to this

I agree with the Pago Flyer’s comment above. What is wrong with recruiting white kids or pointing out that Richt has pretty much stopped doing that. Georgia is a predominantly white institution and there is something just a bit strange about fielding a squad that is 90% black. I’m not saying it’s wrong or underhanded , just strange.

Jeff

I have seen at least 2 recruiting services that say Washaun has been timed in the 4.4 range. I know of one service that shows him at the 4.78, but I have to believe that is a type-o. 4.78 is fullback speed. I don’t know why he would be ranked so high and be so “slow”. (I’d personally love to be able to run a 4.78…)The kid is a player and a playmaker, and we need both at UGA.

For whoevers info: UGA has quite a few caucasion recruits this year and for the first time in a while a scholarship guy on D is white-Chase Vasser. Got a few white guys on the O-line coming in and both QB’s. I think it just comes down to the large majority of elite football players from the state of GA are non-caucasion. If you look at FSU, UF, UM, ALA, USC(e.c.), and most teams in this region its pretty much the same. I don’t see a problem with this. I played with a lot of black guys, they have to work just as hard as the white guys. If anything the white guys just need to get more athletic.

Cynthia Tucker & Terrance Moore can talk about race all day long but nobody else is allowed to, especially whites. You see my point? I see a need for affirmative action in all sports from top to bottom. I present Duke’s BB team as exibit A.

Awesome Baby, go back to your trailer and drink your PBR on your busted stoop. The big boys are talking. Race has nothing to do with it. Just like in the professional world; if you are green and orange but can do the job, then you are the right person for that job. Stop getting hung up on what you see coming out of the arm holes of a jersey. Pay attention to them smacking someone in the mouth or catching game winning passes (a la AJ Green.) I am sure the victories are terrible to deal with, for you, because they are black players. Too bad Herschel wasn’t white, huh? IDIOT!

By dawgfan1911

January 29, 2009 8:52 AM | Link to this

I follow all sports anxd it would be idiotic to think that race does not play a role in sports. It is a known myth that black athletes are looked upon as better athletes. I am not sure that that is so true, but coaches know this and they recruit accordingly. Think about the white running backs who become stars, there aren’t many. The QB position is known to be the posiotion for whites to star at. Coaches know this and it plays a major role in their decision making.

I have a Scout.com account, and I have never seen anything to suggest that Jones wants to play DE, or that UGA is recruiting him as a DE. I know rivals has him ranked as a DE, but different sites have different projections. SLB is becoming less common with all of the spread offenses in the SEC. I do think there is a good chance he could play some MLB,SLB,DE, or all of them at some point in the next 4 or 5 years. All that said, I want the kid to commit to UGA. We do need all of the top prospects we can get our hands on to compete in the SEC, and I am sure this guy would be great at any position. Go Dawgs, and good luck to Jarvis at whatever school he chooses and whatever position he plays.

AwesomeLady, because that’s what you are,It’s a shame when the world is trying to move away from negative racial views, that the one beautiful thing[sports]be diluted by your racist views. “I know, say you’re not racist, and your only kidding”, to make your feel better, but deep down racist like you can’t help themselves. You see, it’s a beatiful thing when Stafford, was throwing to Green, or Herschel was celebrating with Coach Dooley.Do you remember the Pony Express with Craig James[a white RB] and Eric Dickerson [a black RB] from SMU? Probably the best one-two punch the NCAA has ever seen. America is moving beyond ignorant people like you, so do us all a favor, and stay in your doublewide in the backwoods of nowhere and cotinue to hate by your self, Black, and White people who actually have education, will dance together, eat together, and yes go see the DAWGS together. While you rot in hate. But I pray to God that you see the light, before the light blinds you.
