Lithia Springs QB Kelton Hill pursued by other schools, but sticking with Georgia State
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Lithia Springs QB Kelton Hill visited Alabama State over the weekend and was tempted by the prospect of playing right away, but he’s maintaining his commitment to Georgia State, even though the Panthers won’t play their first game until 2010.
“Coach [Bill Curry] is coming to our school [on Friday], this will be the fourth time he’s come here,” said Hill. “It was nice that they told me I could come in and start, but I like coach Curry and I’m sticking with Georgia State.”
Hill had a visit planned to Appalachian State this weekend, but he said he isn’t going to go.

Auburn-bound OL Andre Harris toyed with idea of visiting South Carolina
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Lovejoy offensive lineman Andre Harris toyed with the idea of taking other official visits, but in the end he says he’s sticking with Auburn, despite the upheaval the Tigers have gone through in the past two months.
“I had four visits left, and I could have taken them,” said Harris, who said after Auburn fired Tommy Tuberville that he would consider other schools. “They’re free, and you get to go some new places. I was going to take a visit to South Carolina, but I didn’t end up doing it.”
The departure of South Carolina quarterback Chris Smelley, who transferred out of Columbia, played a part in the decision not to visit, Harris said, and he’s excited about some of the other players heading to the Plains to visit the Tigers., chief amongst them Bastrop, La., WR Reuben Randle, rated the top receiver in the country by Scout.com, whom Harris said is visiting Auburn this weekend.
“I talked to coach Chizik (new Auburn coach Gene) today, and he said he was looking forward to me being there. I figure we’re hitting the high road, and I’m just hoping we can get a top 10 class together.”

UGA courts Carver LB Jarvis Jones one last time
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
UGA coach Mark Richt met with the state’s top uncommitted prospect Jarvis Jones Wednesday afternoon at Carver-Columbus High School.
“They are selling their program,” Carver coach Dell McGee said. “There is not a lot of time left.”
McGee said the 6-foot-4, 226-pound senior met with Richt and assistant coaches John Lilly and John Jancek for about 30 minutes.
“They have an in-home visit with him later,” he said.
Jones is taking his last official visit to LSU this weekend. He has already made trips to Georgia, Texas, Florida and Southern Cal.
Florida is considered by many to be the school to beat for Jones, but he claims no favorites and will announce on Feb. 4.

Kansas State making late push for Cairo’s state championship QB
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Kansas State is making a late push for Cairo quarterback Angelo Pease.
“He is going to take his last official visit to UAB or Kansas State this weekend,” head coach Tom Fallaw said. “He is going to talk it over with his family.”
The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Pease already has taken official visits to Troy and Georgia Southern.
“He will probably decide what he wants to do after his last visit,” Fallaw said.

North Gwinnett junior to visit Alabama and Auburn
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
North Gwinnett junior offensive tackle Austin Shepherd will visit Alabama, Auburn and Florida State for Junior Day this weekend.
The 6-5, 315-pound Shepherd doesn’t have any offers, but is also drawing interest from Michigan State, Central Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, South Carolina and Clemson.
Shepherd and his parents will stop at Alabama and Auburn on Friday before traveling to Tallahassee on Saturday. It’s early in the process, but Shepherd said location will factor in his decision.
“I want to stay down around home so I’ll probably go SEC or ACC,” he said.

Georgia Tech QB recruit thrilled about Stephen Hill
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Georgia Tech quarterback commit Jordan Luallen of Center Grove High in Greenwood, Ind. admitted that he was a bit nervous after learning that Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill was listening to a pitch from Georgia.
But Hill’s brief flirtation with the Bulldogs came to an end Tuesday morning when he announced that he plans to sign with the Jackets on Feb. 4.
“I’m really relieved that Stephen is still committed to Georgia Tech,” Luallen said. “He and I have been close friends since Georgia Tech started recruiting him in October.
“But I started to get worried that I was going to lose a future teammate and a friend too.”
Though Luallen played football in the Hoosier state, he is well aware of the intense rivalry between the Dogs and Jackets.
“It says a lot to me that Stephen stood firm to his commitment to Georgia Tech,” Luallen said. “For a kid from that state, it’s got to be pretty tough to turn down an offer from Georgia.”

UGA considers chasing one of Tennessee’s WR commitments
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
UGA, after being jilted by two prospects at wide receiver within a 48-hour span, may have found another candidate at the position: Philadelphia’s Je’Ron Stokes, who is committed to Tennessee.
Stokes told the AJC that he talked with UGA wide receivers coach Tony Ball on late Tuesday night about making a last-minute trip to Athens this weekend. Stokes is ranked as the nation’s No. 104 overall prospect by Rivals.
“He [Ball] said he loved my film, and that he definitely wanted bring me in on an official visit,” Stokes said. “He said he had to talk with [UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo] to see exactly what’s going on, and he would let me know something for sure by [Wednesday].”
If Georgia invited Stokes for a visit, would he accept? “Yes, I think would do that.”
If Georgia offered a scholarship to Stokes, would he accept it? “I would go there and check things out. And then I would pray about it and see where God leads me.”
UGA hasn’t had much luck luring wide receivers since Sunday: Dacula native Cameron Kenney committed to Oklahoma over the Bulldogs, while Miller Grove’s Stephen Hill decided to stick with archrival Georgia Tech.
There have also been rumors that UGA may contact Henry County’s Jamal Patterson, who is committed to Stanford.
Here’s the quick story on Stokes: He committed to Tennessee last spring and had an official visit with the Volunteers in September, but has been checking out other schools since the coaching change. He traveled to Michigan and Illinois the last two weeks. On Tuesday, he couldn’t call UGA until very late because Michigan coach Rich Rodriquez was at his Pennsylvania house for most of the evening.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound Stokes is ranked as the country’s No. 14 wide receiver by Rivals.
He said Bobo requested senior film last week and that he had been anxious to hear back from the Bulldogs. “I’ve always liked Georgia because they’re a good school, a powerhouse in the SEC. They’ve got so much talent coming in, and already there.”

Boston College recruit Klemm now listening to Maryland
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Things aren’t exactly running smooth around the Boston College football offices right now, and as a result, Wheeler offensive lineman Nick Klemm finds himself at odds with his verbal commitment to play for the Eagles.
Klemm - a 6-foot-6, 280-pound tackle - was 100 percent committed to BC but that was before offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. took a job with the Giants. The Wheeler standout went on an official visit to Boston College on Dec. 12.
After just returning from an official to Maryland this past weekend, Klemm’s recruitment status now comes down to a two-team race between Boston College and the Terrapins.
“It’s pretty tough to deal with something like this,” Klemm said. “It’s very hard to built relationships in a short amount of time. Boston College hasn’t named an offensive line coach yet, and that’s someone you want to know. You’ll be with that person throughout your college career.
“So that’s important to me.”
The Golden Eagles will send a coach to talk with Klemm on Wednesday. Former Syracuse and Minnesota offensive coordinator Mitch Browning has been rumored to be in the running for the open assistant coaching spot, but that’s of little help to Klemm.
He’s high on academics and offensive lineman tradition at Boston College, however, was very impressed with what Maryland had to offer. Klemm remains committed to the Eagles. He did say he would spend this week looking over his options.

Georgia State may have to fight off UAB for Douglass DB
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Douglass defensive back Caleb Lester committed to Georgia State back in December and says he’s still committed to the Panthers.
But UAB stepped up with an offer late last week, and Lester plans to take a visit to the campus this weekend.
“I’m still committed to Georgia State,” Lester said, “but I’m going to give [UAB] a look.”
Among the things he likes about Georgia State are its academic reputation, the opportunity to make history by being a member of the school’s first football team when it takes the field in 2010, and coach Bill Curry.
“He’s a great coach with a great reputation for his players graduating,” Lester said.
But there are also pluses about UAB.
“They’re playing this fall, and I always wanted to play as a true freshman,” Lester said about the Blazers. “And I want to take a look at their academics, too.”

Has UGA contacted Henry County WR Jamal Patterson?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Henry County coach Mike Rozier told the AJC on Tuesday night that rumors about UGA contacting his prized prospect, wide receiver Jamal Patterson, were untrue.
However, there is some history between Patterson and Georgia: The AJC Super 11 selection was heavily interested in UGA last summer but never offered. Nevertheless, just about every other school courted Patterson, who led the state with around 50 scholarship offers, including Florida, Alabama, Georgia Tech, Clemson and Tennessee.
The 6-foot-3, 196-pound Patterson made the surprising decision to commit to Stanford in August. Numerous schools have tried to sway Patterson in recent weeks and he briefly considered the idea of visiting Clemson and Central Florida before changing his mind.
“He is definitely going to Stanford,” Rozier said on Tuesday night.
Then again, things can change quickly in the wacky world of recruiting.
“I’m sure Jamal would be interested in what they [Georgia] had to say, but they haven’t been recruiting him all year,” he said. “And being this late in the game I can’t see anything happening,” he said.
Greg Reid, the AJC Player of the Year, said that Patterson was the best player he ever played against in Georgia.
