Georgia is holding Matthew Stafford’s No. 7 jersey for TE Orson Charles

Tight end Orson Charles of Tampa said Georgia coach Mark Richt doesn’t have any problems with him announcing his college choice after signing day.

“Coach Richt said he will wait … and what was really neat is that he said he would hold my No. 7 jersey for me, even if there is another player they’re recruiting that wants it and that guy is [deciding] on signing day,” Charles said. “I was really surprised and impressed with the way [Richt] was talking about everything.”

“Georgia knew before I visited there that I wasn’t going to commit, and they never pressured me, or really even brought it up. It was a relaxed situation, a lot of fun.”

The No. 7 jersey was worn by quarterback Matthew Stafford last season.

Charles will announce after taking a recruiting trip to Southern Cal on Feb. 13. He rated his UGA visit as a 10, tying the scores he gave after touring Florida and FSU. Charles is scheduled to travel to Tennessee this weekend.

This is a great kid. Place him in the slot, tight end, or out wide. He would make a great addition to the team. He’s in demand. He could make an immediate impact.

Orson, The number 7 was lucky for Stafford. He will be a top 10 pick in the draft. Take Coach Richt up on his offer and you will not regret it.

With the way they are really pushing for Charles and have offered Miller, they Dawgs must feel that they aren’t going to get Marlon Brown. I’m just not sure why they seem so focused on signing pass catchers. They must also be worried that Wotten will sign with someone else. The current depth chart doesn’t make it seem like they should be all that desperate for WR’s or TE’s. Obviously Green will be expected to start and guys like Michael Moore, Tavarres King, Kris Durham, Israel Troupe and Tony Wilson will be back.

I think we’re seeing a developing scheme at Georgia. Win with speed and press the ball downfield with athletic wide receivers and tight ends. College football is approaching the pro styles and plans. Georgia is trying to “stock up” on athletes who can fit the scheme. Speed is the name of the game and I can see Georgia reaching out for the speed merchants. Go CMR … Go UGA.

Paddy, It is very hard to get ahold of Wooten. You usually have to go through his coach (a lot like getting a hold of Starling). Here is the update: He is all dawg. No worries. He will be a great addition to this team next year.

We’re stocking up on wideouts because guys will be graduating soon. Both Michael Moore and Kris Durham will be seniors next year. Anyone who thinks AJ is staying 4 years is crazy. Israel Troupe and Tavarres King are both talented - but inexperienced. It shouldn’t be hard to get wideouts though. Two top qb prospects certainly help. We need Greg Reid more than Charles, Brown, or Hill. Things get awful thin behind Prince Miller… Either way, GO DAWGS!

Didn’t Orson Charles go to the same school as Robert Marve, the punk who was a headcase at Miami? So that means if we get Charles we have to put up w/ that j******* of a high school coach they have too? Hopefully Charles turns out better than that Marve kid did at Miami.

This is for the Georgia, Alabama, Florida, FSU, Miami fans. All but one of you are going to get punked(Perfect word) on Signing Day by a low SAT scoring piece of excrement out of Lowndes, Georgia. This kid epitomizes all that is wrong with college football. A 17 year old piece of air conditioning filament that could not get into Kennesaw Tech if he couldn’t play football. I’m disgusted and I don’t even have a good team to follow—Purdue grad. Read the comments of this potential non-qualifier. Who on this Blog can honestly say that they would have this kid over for dinner. AND don’t play the race card, I almost got killed in Montgomery.

It takes a lot to provoke me, but this potential Bi-Lo(He’ll mess up. Just watch) greeter is really something.

FSU, Georiga, Tennessee, Miami…and all the other schools Greg Reid is leading around like a little doggy…welcome to big time trouble when this kid arrives on your campus. GO ahead, sacrifice your souls for the potential this kid may bring…then pay the price for the “me” trouble he will cause on your team. Gerg Reid is spell big time TROUBLE.

I hope Orson will pick the Dawgs, but this jersey thing is stupid. Any kid who would pick their school based on jersey number is an idiot. He doesn’t deserve that jersey any more than the guys who committed months ago. This is rewarding him for LEAVING HIS SCHOOLS HANGING UNTIL AFTER SIGNING DAY.

I think the young guys Georgia recruited at corner will be fine next year. Love and Branden Smith will be fine with an improved defensive line. Georgia’s defensive problems comes from their schemes and sadly to say their defensive coordinator. These guys are talented. The linebackers will be solid. It is a bit puzzling with the sudden need for receivers when there are so many on the roster who barely touched the field last year. I hope one or to of those young guys step up because Marlon is not coming to Georgia and Orsen is leaning to Florida State. As far as the Reid kid, I know there are ome questions about this kid, but give him a chance. None of us were perfect when we was his age and I am not going to wish this kid to fail academically. I hope he gets the scores he needs to qualify. we are so quick to condem these kids like we live perfect lives. Good luck Mr. Reid, and come to Georgia.

Dawg fans: what is with your love affair with Stafford? What is his real legacy with UGA, other than throwing into triple coverage, untimely interceptions, and no championships?

If he were at UF, we would also have a special place for his jersey: in the janitorial closet.

I mean really. Have some standards already.

Common, agreed, hopefully Murray and Charles are not even close to the headcase that Marve was. From what I hear and read, Marve and Marve alone was the reason he was in the situation he was in down there, not Miami. Shannon runs a pretty tight ship. Hopefully its not the environment and high school that produces these products and Marve was a 1 time thing and Murray and Charles are better kids. Lets hope for our sake anyway.

Simple question for the Gators… Exactly what do games played 19 years ago have to do with today? Much like the games played in the 70’s & 80’s have ZERO to do with the UGA/UF series now.

Fact is, the last 5 games have UF holding a 3/2 edge. The kids involved in those last 5 games, some of them just left campus. That’s what counts. Best of luck and all, but football didn’t begin in 1990.

And I’ll add that ANYBODY who uses these boards to trash a High School Player is a LOSER of the highest degree.

  • Stafford was a promise never fulfilled for UGA. His days as a Dawg were just a “stopover” until he was of draft age. Teams he QB’d never won a title. No love affair here.

  • The team and university should be bigger than the individual. Find a player who really WANTS to be a Dawg. Help Reid and Charles make a decision…move on.

  • FSU will probobly sign both. Bowden always closes stronger than anyone.

  • Noleboy…how good has FSU been since Richt left?

    ckgator,

I don’t think most Dawg fans are as attached to Stafford as you may think. And no, it’s not because he bolted for the NFL, you can’t blame or fault him for that. For me personally, he never really seemed like he cared for the games other than his stats. He didn’t appreciate the rivalries for what they were. He’s not from Georgia, or the region for that matter. He wanted to play for a great Christian coach in a prostyle offense to prepare him for the next level, that’s it.

My mindset is, we’re not trying to replace a Stafford, we’re still trying to replace a David Greene.

PTC Dawg - slice the stats any way you want. We even beat you through the turbulence of the Zook years. The programs are operating at different levels. Tier 1 v. Tier 2-3. That fact is undeniable.

Head-to-head dominance aside, here are the facts over the last 4 years: -We beat Ohio St. for a national title.
-You beat Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl and order pre-national championship rings for the coming year. -We beat Bama in the SEC Champ game with our top player injured. -That same team crushed you in your storied “black out.” (wooo not the BLACK jerseys) -We beat Oklahoma to win our second NATIONAL TITLE in 4 years. -You watched the game on TV.

    Tier 1 v. Tier 2 - very obvious.

Keep looking up…… at the Gators.

Just because the AJC is focusing on skill recruits doesn’t mean that is all UGA is recruiting. It obviously isn’t as sexy to talk about Massie or Geathers, but the fact is they are going after them as well. Not to mention Jones, Starling, and Reid. TXDawg, since you once again demonstrate that you are completely devoid of reading comprehension skills, I feel compelled to repeat my post, with clarification for those who may be, like you, a tad slow.

I will once again acknowledge that, for the entire duration of the series, going back to ANCIENT TIMES, the Poodles lead. In other words, you have to go back to the 1930’s before you can find an overall series lead by Georgia. Most young Gators don’t even consider Georgia to be a rival because UGA has been so uncompetitive in the series for so long. The young ones weren’t even alive when Georgia won very often.

Florida OWNS Georgia, has for the last SEVENTY YEARS, and it’s getting WORSE for Georgia, not better:

If you count the Florida/Georgia series in the 2000’s, Florida leads Georgia 7 games to 2.

If you go back to the beginning of the ‘90’s, Florida leads 16 games to 3.

If you go back to the beginning of the ‘80’s, Florida leads 18 games to 11.

If you go back to the beginning of the ‘70’s, Florida leads 21 games to 18.

If you go back to the beginning of the ‘60’s, Florida leads 27 wins to 21.

If you go back to the beginning of the ‘50’s, Florida leads 33 wins to 25.

If you go back to the beginning of the 1940’s, Florida leads 35 games to Georgia’s 32.

So, in other words, FOR THE LAST SEVENTY YEARS, Florida has owned Georgia.

Now, if you want to compare head coaches, Urban Meyer’s last 5 years:

    57-9 (Richt is 50-14)

5 bowls (5 bowls for Richt)

4 bowl wins (4 bowl wins for Richt)

3 BCS bowl wins (1 BCS bowl win for Richt)

3 13 win seasons (ZERO 13 win seasons for Richt)

3 conference championships (1 conference championship for Richt)

2 national championships (ZERO national championships for Richt)

1 Heisman winner (ZERO Heisman winners for Richt)

1 #1 overall NFL draft pick. (ZERO #1 overall NFL draft picks for Richt)

1 loss against traditional rivals (BYU, FSU, UT, UGa and Miami) ( TEN losses against traditional rivals UF, GaTech, Tenn, Auburn, Alabama for Richt)

Can someone please remind me why everyone thinks Mark Richt is a “great young coach”? I’ll take Urban Meyer over Mark Richt ANY DAY OF THE WEEK.

    Go Gators!

Zook would have been a marked improvement over Goff. (Worst coach in history of college football). I agree that Richt has underacheived at times but has also done a great job at other times. His timing in recruiting is what is killing him. For an example, look at your gators in 07’ the youth and inexperience got to ya. (I know that was not UM’s doing). The SEC is filled with good coaches and tough teams. I think he will eventually “luck up” and beat the gators and win the SEC, just probobly not the NC. He has to have a line at the same time he has skill players at the same time he has a “D”. See gators 08’ and 06’. LSU in 07’. For SEC, UGA in 02’.

txgator, using your numbers, which look true to me, UF has a 3 game lead since the 40’s, and you call that OWNING?

Since the 70’s it’s the same 3….what gives?

That said, other than having a team lose at the years end that gave UF the opportunity to play for the MNC in 06, what is the difference between that and UGA’s year in 02? Basically, the difference is USC lost to UCLA, I believe that to be the case..putting UF into the MNC game. UGA has gotten no such break in it’s two best season’s in Richt’s tenure. We haven’t had the dominos fall to put us in the big game. We like our Coach, and I think Meyer is doing a great job, obviously.

It seems we agree, the past few years may have a bearing on the series, the past 50 years really have NO bearing on the series. If anything, the last 35 or so years have been two streaks, one greatly favoring UGA and one going to UF. It just so happens that UF’s is the most recent. And we have the internet to hash it out on.

    Richt, the master innovator.

Now he’s promising jersey numbers to these prima donnas. What a great idea! Get that entitlement going even before they hit campus.

Almost as good as his endzone celebration. Almost as good as his black-outs. How did those end up?

Gee leghumpers, what will he think of next?

texigator, it’s interesting that you conveniently left Auburn and LSU off Florida’s rival list, so let’s at least be consistent with the comparison. Who cares about all that going back to the 60’s, 70’s, blah, blah? All you need to know is that this is a streaky series. You own us now and in the 90’s. We owned you in the 70’s & 80’s. Try to win with a little class so you won’t be so humiliated when the series turns around. Also, Richt did have a 13 win season in 2002.

Take your little TE puppies!!! We just landed the greatest receiver to ever come out of Georgia!!! You’ll long for the days of 45-42 when we start beating you by 50 points next year!! The ACC will prove to be the most dominate conference in football from here on out!!! Next year all 12 teams will be in bowl games. We’ll play North Carolina for both the ACC crown and the National Title!! Too bad our 2,000 yards of offense will destroy any team we face!! Even a mighty ACC team like ours!!! Buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow weeeee I get the #7 Jersey?? What an honor…that is about as stupid as Tech putting 45 42 on their Sr rings…Stafford was a fine QB, but I do not recall a Nat Champ, SEC Champ, Heisman…so he goes 66% against GT, and 33% against (all of the above, x 2) UF!

Honestly, all this bickering by you florida, fsu, and georgia tech fans just shows that you are all worried about us getting Charles. Charles is an amazing athlete, a class plater, and is taking his time because he wants to make the best choice for him, after all it is HIS LIFE that is going to change depending on which school he chooses. Charles has every right to “request” a specific number from the school of his choice, so what? hes getting a JERSEY!! who cares? let him have it! If that makes him happy and he goes to UGA then SO BE IT. Stop whining because UGA got him. Florida fans, yes we get it, UF has won more recently but that doesnt mean they had better teams or coaches! It just means they got more breaks. Meyer is a jerk, hes incredulous and a spurrier wannabe. Stop trashing high school players, period. Can you honestly blame a 17 year old kid for getting over excited with all the national attention?

Greg Reid- is leaning toward fsu, but hasnt yet taken his official to UGA! That will convince him!

Orson Charles- Will more than likely end up at UGA as well, he loved his visit, he has been highly toted by UGA and realizes his opportunities there are numerous.

Jawanza Starling- Has family ties to UGA and heavily favors them.

Hey, theworldisajacketshive- 7 years in a row sound familiar? Or how bout the series record of 59-36-5 in favor of UGA thats a 23 game lead, so i would say UGA OWNS GT idiot. AND the acc is a JOKE dude, really. where have you been? how was that bowl game this year? oh right, 38-3 in favor of SEC powerhouse LSU. psh. haha wishful thinking.

I follow college football and college football recruiting constantly, my opinions are biased and I am willing to listen to logic, but not nonsense.

Here is what will happen on signing day:

Bobby Massie will end up at Bama

Jawanza Starling, Je’ron Stokes, and Greg Reid will be Dawgs.

Jarvis Jones will be a gator .
Marlon Brown will be a vol

After signing day Orson Charles will commit to the Dawgs after his USC visit.

Kwame Geathers will commit to UGA because he will receive a commitable offer at that time.

UGA will get 5 more commits

I truly, completely hate Florida. Their white-trash, trailor park, internet board trash talking fans have to be the most low class people on earth. Memo to jort-wearing Flordia fan: the is a UGA board!! Go to some Orlando newspaper blog and post about the awesomeness of Pope Urban and Tebow of Nazareth. But spewing insults on your rival’s board is just low-rent trash….much like the sidewalk alumni gator faithful.

“With the way they are really pushing for Charles and have offered Miller, they Dawgs must feel that they aren’t going to get Marlon Brown. “

Look at UGA’s recent years depth chart at WR and TE

You will find that 5 Wr’s is just not enough, they are looking to sign atleast two wr’s and at best 3 along with Charles.

Also, looks like Marlon will sign with UGA (just my opinion) and who knows about wooten, he says he is all dawg.( time will tell)

We need defensive ends more! BTW, Halsey listed 6 WRs in his post. Surely signing 1 or 2 this year puts us in pretty good shape. Who is going to play defensive end? We can’t win consistently with the bunch we had this year. They were pretty bad. In fact, IMHO, that was the real problem with the defense. We were ok at other positions (oh yes, I’m aware we were not great at all positions and our coaching on defense was poor).

I just don’t understand all this attention to WR and very little, if any, to DE, especially since T Jackson is not coming. Which compels me to say I think we need to do a better job recruiting kids who will qualify. So far this year, we’ve lost Jackson (for second time!), and the reports indicate as many as 6 of our current recruits are “trying to qualify.” What currently looks like a very good class on paper could turn out to be a problem if these kids do not qualify.
