MIller Grove WR Stephen Hill “going to stay a Yellow Jacket”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Stephen Hill is “going to stay a Yellow Jacket.”
Hill decided to stick with his commitment to Georgia Tech on Tuesday, turning down overtures from archrival UGA.
“It was a tough decision, because I really liked Georgia a lot in the beginning [of the recruiting process], and when they started talked to me again, it definitely made me have some second thoughts,” Hill admitted.
“But my heart is at Georgia Tech. That is where I want to be for the next four or five years of my life.”
The wide receiver from Miller Grove called the rival schools to reveal the news. Georgia Tech celebrated by passing the phone along to three coaches, including coach Paul Johnson. “He [Johnson] said ‘thanks for your loyalty, thanks for sticking with us.’”
Then Hill contacted UGA wide receivers coach Tony Ball. The Bulldogs made an offer on Saturday, and then met with Hill and his parents for three hours on Monday. “You could tell that [Ball] was a little disappointed. But he was very appreciative. He thanked me a lot for just giving them a look this late in the recruiting process. He said he wished he would’ve been recruiting me earlier.”
Hill was bombarded over the last 24 hours with text messages from both Georgia Tech and UGA commitments, urging him to sign with their respective school. “Not many kids were offered by both Georgia and Georgia Tech this year,” Miller Grove coach Jasper Jewell said. “In the end, Stephen had built a good relationship with the Georgia Tech coaches and he couldn’t pass up the opportunity to play so close to home.”
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Hill was an early commitment to Central Florida last summer, but then switched to Georgia Tech on Nov. 3 after also considering offers from Boston College and Mississippi State.
Hill is arguably the state’s top overall athlete. In track, he was the 2008 Class AAAA champion in the long jump, while also setting a DeKalb County record by jumping 23-feet, 11 inches. He is also a prospect in basketball, but has decided to play football in college.
“He has tremendous upside,” Jewell said earlier this year. “Once he gets to college, he will put on 15 to 20 pounds. I think he will be the next Calvin Johnson. With the desire he has for the game, he can play on Sundays.”

I knew that little punk would do the stupiest thing possible. We didn’t want that J.V. kid anyways. He never would have played and would have wasted a scholly at UGA. He’ll be the best player on Yech’s pathetic roster. Have fun being watched by all 12 people that show up to the games eating there free hotdogs. Stephen you’re a idiot and you deserve to be stuck at Yech. Remember that they only RUSH for 400 yards against UGA. They don’t throw for that many, only rush.

Way to stay on top of this story AJUGAC. Stephen Hill will be a jacket!! Good luck in the future son. Personally I think blogs are a terrible spot to judge a programs class and character. I would hope that many UGA fans care about these kids, no matter where they choose to go. These are student atheletes and many of these idiots on here will never understand what that means. With that said, both are good choices, but glad you chose GT. Whats the good word?!!!!!!

I will say it again…. Never before has a school had so much going for it (easy academics, 4th most talent-rich football state, tons of beautiful women, SEC, a dirt-cheap priced town, people treat football players like gods, and again tons of beautiful women), and done so little. Mark Richt has been the most overrated coach in a very long time. Everyone in this state is obsessed with UGA, especially anyone football-related, yet the school annually underperforms and is now losing out to Tech. You’ve got to love it. And thanks to Bark Madley for his annual “next year will be the national championship year” article he wrote a few weeks ago. The job Paul Johnson does, with what little he has compared to Richt, is mindboggling. These two coaches aren’t in the same ballpark.

What a couple days - Mother Richt calls, the bagman and Ball lay it on thick and the young man says no thanks, my heart is with GT. Now all the UGAG fans can dish him as not that good, didn’t really want him and then get to watch have a great career and go to the NFL like Calvin.

You can’t fault the young man. Many kids are terrified of competition, and at Yech he’ll have zero. Of course he won’t catch more than 2 passes at game at best, but he still won’t have to work for his spot at all. Good luck young man. Enjoy your Cracker Jack rings and mediocrity in the ACC, Lol!!

When will UGA learn they need to pay more attention to prospects in the state of GA. They lost the #1 prospect last year to FL who wanted to come to GA and will continue to lose until they wake up. We hear the story they want players fron GA but they seem to place too much effort on out of state players who don’t come.

Congrats Hill on a good choice. Johnson, as he as already let on, will add more passing plays to the book in 09. As he said all along, this is not a one dimensional offense, and will pass more now that the boys have a year of the system under thier belts. BIGDAWG, don’t be mad. Little boy Hill is a 6’-4” 18 year old that would kick your teeth in if he were so inclined.

I will assume that you left the word again out of your statement because GT actually had 5 games last year where a player had more than 3 catches and 50 yards. One of which was 9 catches for 230 yards. But hey, don’t let facts get in the way of your vitriol.

The UGA commenters are idiots - obviously UGA wanted the kid after losing out on Kenney, so why talk smack about him now? The GT commenters are also idiots - you’re talking smack because they beat out UGA for one recruit, someone GT has been recruiting for a long time and UGA has been recruiting for one week. The fact that UGA got that close this late should bug the crap out of you.

” Lets ponder his options here… Option 1) Go to a school who runs the boring Option Offense and never touch the ball your college career due to a lousy two star “run only” QB, play in front of measly 35,000 silent nerds at the “never sold out” Bobby Dodd, play a grueling ACC schedule and have your biggest game aired on RAY COM sports, and at the end of your Tech career maybe have a shot to play in the XFL(if they ever make a come back). Option 2)Go to a school that has 4 quarterbacks with great accuracy(4th being Logan Grey who could have his jersey retired at Tech), an offense that throws the ball over 50% of the time, consistently in the Top 10, has more of their practices aired on ESPN than Tech does football games, and puts more male cheerleaders in the NFL than Tech football. Hmmmmm. If i was a 6″4 wide out that thinks I have a shot at playing on Sundays, I think the decision is pretty clear.”

Thank you “D.Ellis” for your civilized blog post. No doubt it was a tough decision for Mr. Hill … in the end he went with his gut feelings and that’s what everyone has to do when choosing a college (be they a student-athlete or just a student).
Mr. Hill: welcome to GT! CPJ has big plans for you, while he instills the other 42-45 percent of his offensive strategy in 2009.

Wise decision on his part. He doesn’t have the frame, toughness or the skill set to handle the SEC. So why not just hangout on the field every Saturday throwing blocks? Look at what the AJC hype machine did for Calvin and he didn’t have a fraction of the numbers to back it up. If this kid gets half the undeserving hype Johnson did he can maybe walkon to an NFL team one day. Again, wise decision Hill and good luck!!!

Ah yes, the “we didn’t want him anyway” diatribe from the UGA fans. If that was the case, then why did Richt waste his time and why did they offer him a scholarship? I was disappointed said comment from you guys didn’t make it to the first comment posted, but after reading the rest of the comments I wasn’t let down.
You’ve got to be worried if you’re a UGA fan. You’ve got the built in advantage, had the best quarterback and running back at your school in forever, and you can’t beat a tech team with a coach in his first year running an “outdated” offense. Furthermore, now you’re losing out on a wide receiver recruit to a team that averaged less than ten completions a game. It certainly doesn’t appear to be trending in a good direction for you guys, so the vitriol comes as no surprise to me.

Do some fact checking before spouting off… Versus Duke BeBe Thomas caught 9 passes for 230 yards… Just goes to show that when the O-line is healthy and can pass block, CPJ’s run-and-shoot package will be lethal. He wasn’t going to install it until we got the fundamentals down solidly as that package is more complex… Adding Hill to the lineup just opens up that pass threat even more so teams can’t just focus on stopping the A/B backs and letting the QB beat them (what LSU did)

Matt, don’t be stupid. Coach Richt’s accomplishments in the toughest football conference in America speaks for itself. The jury is still out on PJ at Tech. One good year doesn’t make him the genius you have elevated him to. When he reaches the level where he can can win some ACC championships and win some quality bowl games then maybe you can make that comparison. So far he has 1 win over his instate rival and a monumental azz whipping by a 5 loss SEC team in the best bowl Tech has attended in years. Richt competes against teams that consistently rake in top 10 recruiting classes week in and week out. He competes against coaches that have won NCs and has victories over them all. To include Saban, Meyer, Spurrier, Fulmer, and Les Miles. PJ can’t say that. He lost to Beamer and he lost to Butch Davis, both coaches that could make it in the SEC. He got absolutely outcoached and humiliated by Les Miles. What would he accomplish in the SEC? Until he accomplishes a good bit more, you are being rather ignorant to elevate him to such God like status before he really, to be truthful has accomplished anything above the average. To elevate Paul Johnson over Mark Richt at this point in time shows how ignorant and unknowledgable you are about the game of football.

Same situation as Calvin Johnson. This kid is essentially a momma’s boy who didn’t want to get too far from home. Tech is a lot closer to his home than Athens. And frankly, some kids do fear that they can’t make it at the next level. That won’t be an issue in the ACC and in a program like Tech, where he won’t have much competition nor will he face much in the way of nasty defense. I honestly think the kid feared he would be a nobody at Georgia and would have to redshirt to bulk up. Good luck to him, but I’m afraid that Calvin Johnsons are once every 40 years at Georgia Tech.

I am a fan of both schools beacuase I have known kids who played for the DAWGS & JACKETS. TECH is going to be a propblem for the next 4 to 5 years because of MR. HILL. I see some the of UGA fans making comments about how Hill is an average athlete or he is dumb and that is plain stupid to say. He is 6”4, runs a sub 4-5 40, and he almost broke the long jump record last year in track & field. I have seen the kid catch touchdowns with one hand in double coverage. In the ALL American game he caught a 67 yard bomb and I swear he beat the DB by four to five steps. He also is a great student from a 2 PARENT HOUSEHOLD!!!!! So keep your harsh words to yourself before HILL makes you eat them. UGA had a shot to get him but they chose to put all thier eggs in one basket and lure that receiver out of TENN and it did not work. No need to hate on MR HILL, be mad at the UGA recruiting practices. THEY BLEW IT!!!!!!!

Amazing how the AJC had this article at the very top of their homepage when UGAY offered him a scholarship but have it hid amongst a slew of other postings when he rejected the offer.
Way to go Stephen. You have joined a top notch University that has the priorities in the right place (academics first! Top SAT football team based on the AJC’s own investigation out of 55+ schools) and yet still strives for greatness in athletics!

Gosh, some of you Georgia fans have got to be the most whiny bunch of losers I’ve ever seen. You literally have an excuse for everything…
Case 1) We win in football - “Only happens once in a decade, we gave it to you”
Case 2) You lose a recruit- “He would have never made it in the SEC”
Case 3) You are preseaon ranked number, guaranteed NC - “It’s all Willie Martinez and Mark Richts fault!”
My gosh when are you people going to be a little bit credible and actually gives us a little bit of credit? My real UGA friends at least were nice enough to congratulate us on our victory, but no you stupid “FANS” just have an excuse for everything. And you know what, if my Georgia Tech loses every game to you guys in the next decade, I will still love this school and the outstanding players/athletes/ and alumni we are!

Whoa, the venom is really flying from the jackets lately. Why so angry? So now Tech’s recruiting class is better than UGA’s? Have they even cracked the top 25 yet?
Wow, nothing funnier than reading Tech fans talking about championships that they’re great grandparents didn’t even witness.
UGA claims only 2 titles, could essentially claim 5 if they wanted to be desperate like Tech. they hold stakes in 12, compared to Tech’s 7.
Since you want to talk ancient history and everything….
By This says nothing about either program

Basically, as Hill stated, the Dawgs started recruiting late. He already had a relationship with the coaches and players at Tech. If UGA offered this kid 6 months ago there is no doubt he would be signing with UGA. However, they waited to long to offer.
You have to admire the kid for being true to his word.

I cannot believe how narrow minded people can be. I have known Steven all of his life and he is an intelligent young gentleman that knows his face from his other end. The mean spirited posts on this site belies the limited knowledge that many people have when it comes to make decision based on loyalty and a sound understanding of what the future holds. Personally, I am not from Georgia so I don’t give a rat’s ear about the bulldogs and not even the Razorbacks for that matter because I am a Golden Lion and you would not understand because you have not had that SWAC attack. Steven will go farther with his utilitarian outlook on what is ahead of him than most of the mean posters can walk to get the mail. If you cannot say something good, shut up and maybe if you get a chance to listen, you may learn something. I personally will be tailgating at GT while being the biggest and the best booster for Steven and his wonderful family. I believe BIGDAWG to be a Techster in disguise trying to behave like some over the top idiot Dawg fan.
Lord, I hope so, anyway.
True Dawg fans, please show some civility on here. You are throwing gas on Tech’s little victory parade fire. Don’t stoop to RAMBLE ON levels by name-calling and fit pitching. Mr. Hill made the decision he was the most comfortable with and kept his word to GT and CPJ. Nothing wrong with that. Wish him well and let’s move on.

Good call Stephen. Now, just come close to being a Calvin Johnson and you can still play on Sundays. Best of luck on a great career. Tech is just beginning to become a power house. After the Dead Zone years with Sham “Can Chan” Gailey, all things are possible. Paul Johnson is the mentor you need and a program on the rise.

So, you have finally had a few positive things happen to a couple of your programs. So what! The Dawgs can’t win EVERY year, I mean, you got to slip up every once in awhile…like once every 8 years.
As far as “Beating us at recruiting” ha ha ha ha UGA just offered this kid this week!! A week away from signing day. Because he stuck with his commitement says more about the young man than it does for either program. I GUARANTEE if UGA had offered him 6 months ago he would be a Dawg on Feb 4th.
Anyways NERDS, enjoy each victory you can muster against the DOMINANT PROGRAM to the North that is UGA. Because it is obvious that you all realize how they are few and far between otherwise you wouldn’t get the score engraved on your bowl ring

Or you could say davidb, that over the last 28 years, UGA has 1 concensus NC won on the field #1 against #2, and that Tech has a 1/2 NC awarded by a defunct news service that was not won on the field of play. When was the last time anybody did that after playing in the GATOR Bowl? Another dubious Tech achievement. I think the Concensus NC and UGA’s success over that 28 year span goes well beyond GT. In fact since 1964 Tech is 13-37 head to head with UGA and well in arears in the overall series. UGA stands head and shoulders above GT. Anyway you try to slice and dice it or spin it UGA is a much better program. And you can throw in the fact that UGA consistently runs a 21.5 million dollar surplus while Tech runs a deficit that rivals the U.S. national debt. UGA hasn’t taken any seats out of their stadium either.

“This shows just how STUPID little boy hill is.. going to the nred school that will never win again in the state of gerogia because of that stpuid caoch they have they will be lucky to beat duke tech can have him hill is not that good to start with.”
I’m sure comments like that had NOOOOTHING to do with why he didn’t choose your school. Classless dawgs…maybe you can win next year…for now…we hold the last win!

It’s funny to hear the same nonsense from Tech people that they repeated under each new coaching regime. The fact is, Tech is going nowhere fast. They will be lucky to win the ACC in any given year…let alone go to a BCS bowl. All you have to do is look at the fact that they scraped out one win in the last 8 tries against Georgia. What does that tell you?

By offering this Hill kid a scholarship, UGA seems to be admitting that they are not going to get Marlon Brown. It appears that UGA made some mistakes in targeting certain kids this year. However, we have plenty of prospects already in the system and one year’s mistakes shouldn’t hurt too much in the long run. Congrats to Stephen Hill on keeping his word and his commitment.

Ho hum… There’s a new coach on the Flats. He’s not the same one that stuck with Reggie Ball through ‘thin and thinner”. We have a coach that actually COACHES the players up. You have a preacher and a salesman. UGA’s staff reminds me of one of my old P.E teachers that just rolled out the ball and said “Go play”. I’ve got no problem with the kid turning us down. We might have been able to get him if we had offered first but we didn’t. This is simply either a matter of extra scholarships available because of the underclassmen leaving early or perhaps wose an indication that we might not get that all-world kid from Memphis. Hill evidently felt obligated to Tech since they were the in-state school that offered first. Nothing wrong with that! In fact I admire him for sticking to his commitment. And for those of you who would point out that he had changed his mind once before when he switched from Central Florida to Tech, I’d say he evidently wanted to play close to home. But don’t underestimate the influence of an up and coming program either. Make no mistake my fellow dawgs … Tech under Coach Johnson is going to be good for years to come. Gone are the days when Georgia can just show up and beat the Jackets and from here on they’d better bring their A-game each and every time they play. Otherwise this thing could snowball and Georgia could be in for a real challenge when it comes to recruiting. But overall I think our coaches have done another good job of securing verbals from a talented group of kids. Now let’s just reel them in next week and hopefully that receiver from Memphis and perhaps later Orson Charles too. Go Dawgs!

Don’t let the detractors bother you. WR’s get drafted high from GT (Calvin) and yes, even from option based teams (Nebraska in the 80s). You have the best of all worlds.

I see reading comprehension is not your forte, huh, For Carl T. I do believe that I said Richt coaches week in and week out against teams that have consistently high recruiting classes, thus upping the caliber of competition over let’s say a Paul Johnson. He has beaten every coach in the SEC that holds a NC at least once. PJ lost to the 2 best coaches in the ACC, Butch Davis and Frank Beamer.
As for your assertion that every one that posts pro tech propaganda on this blog being officially associated with Tech, maybe you should back up and take a look at what you just said or go back and look at the posts where the writer can’t spell, write a legible sentence, or comprehend what it is he reads. Because if you are right there are some truly semi literate individuals you are crediting with an association with Tech. Case in point: RAMBLE ON!! They don’t come any dumber. But if you insist I will certainly let you assert that these dumbazzes are officially associated with the trade school. As for you, maybe you should go to the library and check at a few Dick and Jane readers. You might be able to comprehend what you are reading in those publications. Good luck to you trying to sell yourself as a Tech student or grad with such poor reading comprehension skills. And just to validate what I just said about this guys comprehension please see the abortion of a sentence from his post.

Are you really just rambles onandon?
Please, feed us some more history!! I want to learn.
For CARLT:
Are you making wagers about faceless posters? You have no idea what all these techie poster status’ are. Could be a rich wonderful tech grad, could also be one of a dozen red(I mean REALLY red)neck techsters I know. They never went to school there but root for tech cause their daddy’s daddy went to tech for a quarter in the 40’s. They do not represent all techsters but I have known them since childhood. They all watched the rest of us leave and go off to school at UGA and other places while they stayed at home and worked for the city or landscaping or maybe went to the community college. Now, during these types of conversations they love to tell me how much better a tech degree is than mine from UGA.

Dawg Nation thank you for confirming why Stephen chose the better school because if he’ll come out saying things like “We didn’t never really wanted that jerk anyhows” its best that he chose Tech. Furthermore, its quite pathetic that adults take the time out of their “busy” day to degrade a 12th grader because he wanted to weigh all of his options before choosing a college, correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t that how you select a college, you weigh your options to find the best fit for you. NOTE: This question is for my UGA fans that actually went to college. Bottom line, Stephen chose the school that was best for him PERIOD POINT BLANK!! lets let the 2008-2009 season speak for itself! Even as a Georgia alum and fan, I admire Hill for sticking with his verbal to Tech. It seemed that we weren’t interested enough to offer until after Kenney committed to Oklahoma and, who knows, our staff may or may not know that it’s now beyond an outside shot with Marlon Brown. Apparently, we then said to Hill’s HS coach, who asked why (he already knew the answer)our newly found interest had come about so late, that it was because of the recent change in our wide receivers coach. We need to take the remedial course, Better Excuses 101.

Yet when you roll off a couple in a row you think they are the greatest coaches of all time. UGA will never be a Florida, Texas, USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State or Georgia Tech (We still have more titles). For CARLT: January 27, 2009 1:55 PMI would be careful of stereotyping….
Who exactly did he stereotype? All I saw was a statement saying hopefully some of the DAs that the poster For Carl T claimed to have an association with Tech, were Tech grads, or Tech students were semi literate and hopefully not indicative of Tech itself.. And their posts seem to back him up. You should be taking For Carl T to task for that asinine statement as opposed to your statement to Carl T.

Hill made a great decision. GT is in a top BCS conference, has a great academic reputation, is located in downtown Atlanta, has a high level of prestige for football, more recently won a National championship than us, and their headcoach is 1-0 against his instate rival.
I wish Hill would have come to UGA but we have plenty of great WRs and players as well. I also wish Calvin and Dwyer would have come to play between the hedges. I hope Hill doesn’t end up being on the Calvin/Dwyer level or we will be left regretful again. At GT didn’t get Eric Berry, I would rather see him at Tenneesee than GT.

Erk- yes, Richt and his staff did beat Tech 7 out of 8. They’ve beaten Paul Johnson’s team 0 out of 1. Didn’t UGA have 2 weeks to prepare for Tech? Did Richt take his players back to that indoor pool every day for 2 weeks?Like I said before, the coach that you dominated at Tech is gone, as are your quarterback and tailback. We are just getting started.

Physical stats are very impressive as are his purported atheletic abilities. However, this is no longer high school.
While BeBe (aka Damarius Thomas; 6’3” 230) is a very solid WR, he’s not the next Calvin Johnson as he was touted to be. On the other hand, IF Mr. Hill is as good as BeBe (who knows, he might turn out to be much better), then this will present problems for defenders.
For folks who don’t believe the Jackets throw the ball I reiterate BeBe’s 9 catch 230 yard game vs. Duke (with the backup QB playing). I also remember Roddy Jones catching a 40+yd TD vs. Va.Tech b/c the Hokies were focused on stopping the run - boom, where was the LB & Safety? Another huge pass play to Roddy Jones turned-the-tide vs. Clemson; again b/c the D was looking to stop the run. Then the game winning play for Tech in that game was a PASS. There were long pass plays vs. FSU & Miami, and close to 100 yards receiving by BeBe in the VA game.
It all boils down to execution. The talent is there, and it appears (with Hill) that even more is on the way now let’s see what happens as Paul Johnson installs his passing attack into the offensive scheme. Looks more promising right now though.

Matt- CMR has underperformed and is overrated?? You can’t expect a team to win it’s conference every year unless your a USC fan, but that is a diff. argument for a different day. How many NC have been from the SEC since Richt got there? 4? That’s not counting the undefeated Auburn team of ‘04. You play in the ACC for crying out loud!!! FSU and Miami are barely a shell of what they once were. Who exactly is it that could compete with LSU, Bama, Florida, and UGA?!?!?!

Yes KneeJerk, I have already given credit for Johnson’s win over UGA in his first year. My point is that Tech is up and down every year and that did not change this year. Yes, Ga had 2 weeks to prepare for Tech. It’s hard to go full speed in practice with multiple defensive injuries (as evidenced in UGA’s lack of 2nd half tackling). How many weeks did Tech have to prepare for LSU to put up that whopping 3 points?

GEORGIA TECH has “3” let me spell it out “THREE” National Championships all time compared to
uga’s single as in “1” NC in 1980 - the only time since 1869 that uga has won it.
Being smarter than most uga puppies (I said most) that would tranlate into 3 to 1 better probability of winning a NC @ Tech!!!! And all of you “puppies” that start whining about “that is in the PAST”, Tech’s last NC was 1990 and uga’s 1980 and GT hasn’t been pre-season #1 and lost 3 games in that year!!! Minnesota has 6 National Championships
The above MUST mean they are better than either team listed here.
More Championships = better program.
Until a few years ago, UGA’s basketball program was as good as GT’s because they had the same # of Final Four’s?!?!?!?
Which “program” was better in baseball from 1991 - 2005, the Braves or Marlins? The Braves were in it every year and won 1 WST, the Marlins were in it twice and won 2 WST. The Marlins made the most of those 2 seasons but the Braves had the better “program”.

So in spite of Tech’s alledged “storied” past and all those dubious leather helmet NCs, why is it that Grant Field/Bobby Dodd Stadium actually had to have seats removed? It appears that other schools that compete at high levels benefit from their success. What is wrong at Tech. In 1964 Sanford Stadium held 45000 people. Today it holds 90000+. Could it be that Tech fans are all talk and no walk when it comes to actually DOING SOMETHING to grow their program. Or could it possibly be that Tech’s accumen on the field of play is a figment of their fan’s imaginations more than it is a verifiable fact? This is most likely the reason that Tech continues to be be mired in mediocrity as a rule. I mean jeeze! A ring for going 9-3! What’s that tell you about the state of a program?

Wow, there are some idiotic post by both sides. I’m glad to see the guy stay in Georgia. Good luck at Tech. Would have liked to see you in Athens, but we can’t get them all especially when we wait til the last week of recruiting.
I see both teams improving dramatically. However, the QB situation at Tech is not the best for balance. Those guys know how to run the option, but because they will do that 2/3’s of the time they will not be use to throwing the ball. There’s nothing wrong with running the ball. It just makes it tough when a defense comes in and shuts it down.
I think Joe Cox is going to surprise a lot of folks this coming year and the O-Line will be older and healty, we hope. Should be fun. I look forward to both teams having close to 10 wins at the end of the year when we play. We need to get this rivalry on a national level again. See you folks in November!

For those of you, and I will use this term liberally, “people,” who misunderstood my comments about the institutes of higher learning, let me be clearer for you; I was trying to speak in simple terms for simple people.
I am well aware the GA Tech is an abbreviation for the Georgia Institute of Technology, and it’s one of the few public institutions of higher education in America that doesn’t use the word “University” as a part of its formal name.
Now if anyone would like to have a formal lesson about how Tech was originally founded, or any of its iterations through the years, I’d be more than happy to accommodate you…I have several pretty pictures for those of you who have a hard time following the words.

Thank you for your loyalty and commitment to GT. If you had chosen UGA, I would have thanked you for considering Tech in your choices, but I am glad I don’t have to do that.
Coach Johnson is building something special at Tech, and you are coming in on the cusp of it. By your 2nd to 3rd year, this team can be competing with the top 5 teams in the country. Will you have to block? Yes, and when you make it to the pros, you will have to block there also. Will Coach Johnson pass the ball more when he has the offensive line and receivers to make it work? Yes, and that will start in 2009, and by 2010, it will be as seamless as the triple option running attack.
Go Jackets and Go Stephen Hill! Welcome young man.

The answer to your questions can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Collegefootballchampionships
It lists ALL College Football Championships AND the organizations that voted for them.
Also, UGA recognizes 2 CF Championships 1942 & 1980
They share partial championships in 1927, 1946, & 1968

All you need to know is, Stephen Hill realized that he could go to Tech and be the skinny wide receiver with little or no competition for playing time and he’ll be close to Lithonia. He probably realized that playing in the SEC week after week is a whole different game and he could have very well become a nobody in big hurry. He might also might like the idea of playing in Atlanta, close to home, safe and close to his mom. Some of these kids know in their hearts that high school is one thing, trying to make All SEC is something entirely different.

Classless is gutless Tech trash attacking this kid calling him a thug, a gangsta, a criminal for daring to consider his childhood dream of a school. But now that he’s decided to stay with Tech he’s back to being a “fine student athlete.” You people are cowards and the ONLY thing you can hide behind is the myth of “student athletes.” The only REAL school in the ACC that concerns themselves with STUDENT athletes is Duke, as we all know. And don’t they own you at hoops against your rented, one-and-done thugs?

Good for this kid. I like it when someone sticks by his word. I, as stated many times previously, would not want a kid who would break his commitment.
I am also aware that many people on this blog disagree with my old fashioned worldview. So, not necessary to get into a debate about whether a man is no better than his word. I lived long enough to know the answer to that issue.
Hope he does well at Tech and later in life.

From both sides,
Are people this competitive to a point that people are trashing high school students for what school they commit to. Is this on borderline of crazy on the way to obsessive? These are high school athletes enjoying the attention they are getting from you guys feeding their egos. You have to remember that these recruits may not see any playing time for at least a couple of years. By then, they will have been forgotten for obsessing over next years recruits.
Let’s try not to trash students for what school they go to. It’s not very classy.

If you can’t cut the competition yech is the place for you. Study your brains out with the ugly girls, while our recruits party it up and win National Championships! He can block against man coverage! No yech reciever will ever get over 3 catches and 50 yards in a game until johnson gets fired.
WOW! If this doesn’t show all GT fans how ignorant and stupid ugay fans are, i don’t know what will! What a scumbag post! Party it up? Ugay, win a national championship?? You must mean paper preseason national championships! Boy, are you ugay fans gonna be a bit shocked when you see the run and shoot on the flats next year! So you rednecks know, cpj only installed 60% of the offense last year. That means another 40% to just abuse you jokes next year in atlanta. To think of it, ugay was ranked 15 against the run, and still couldn’t stop us. 409 yards later and a 33-14 rout in the second half, you losers decided to turn your attention to crying about your hedges! you guys need to come back to earth! There are a lot of people from both sides that need to grow up. Being an Alumnus from Georgia I would have to think that the Tech Grads would have to be agreeing with me right now.

All insults aside (both sides really sound stupid when you read through these posts), what’s this kid thinking? Did he not look at the offense this past year? From a common sense standpoint, if this guy is thinking that he’s going to get much attention or touches in this offense, he’s deluded. Calvin Johnson would look mediocre in this offensive system. It sure seems like he may be wasting a better offensive opportunity by not going to UGA when you look at the numbers. Out of 120 D-I teams, GT was 117th in passing. UGA was 16th. If you’re talking rushing, it’s a different story (GT - 4th, UGA - 56th), but this guy’s a receiver. Without all of the inane insults and good old fashioned hatred, it’s a hard decision to defend, and probably one that he’s going to regret after a few short years of blocking. I wish him luck anyway.

Yeah, he might not catch as many passes as he may have in Athens but he’s shown some character by sticking to his commitment.

Dave in tampa you are correct….about 5 percent of UGA fans went to UGA….but GT’s fan base is far different. It is composed of alot of alumni(myself included). The reason for this is the amount of success we have had in the last ten years. I remember when i was a kid in the 1990s Tech fans were everywhere and far outnumbered the UGA….at least in my hometown. I assume this was because of Tech’s success 1990 national title…1998, 1999 seasons were awesome and we picked up a lot of bandwagoners. Its how it works….I have a feeling bobby dodd will be sold out a few times next year…if the economy gets better.

I actually know Stephen Hill’s dad from the many years our children participated in youth Track and Field. On many occasions, Hill awed the crowd with his exploits on the track, representing Georgia and the U.S.A during elite events. But anyone who doesn’t know, it takes more than just talent to reach the heights that he has: hard work, perseverance, and faith.
I’m proud of Stephen Hill.
Hill final choices appeared to be Georgia and Georgia Tech. Why not be proud that he stayed in Georgia? Name calling a youth is a cowardly act.
Despite having Georgia roots, I’m not from Georgia so I can not understand where the arrogance is based?

I’m a little tired of reading posts from Tech fans putting down UGA’s academics so I have some statistics for you to think about.
102 - # of football players graduated since 2004 965 - UGA’s Academic Progress Rate for football (80th - 90th percentile among Div. I programs and top of the SEC) 951 - GA Tech’s APR during the same time period (70th - 80th percentile)
Bonus Round: UGA has had 8 football players in the 1st round of the NFL draft and 8 in the 2nd round since 2001. We’ll be adding two more for 2009. Again, top of the SEC.

951 = GA Tech’s Academic Progress Rate for the football team (70th - 80th percentile)
Bonus Round: 8 1st round NFL draft picks, 8 2nd round NFL draft picks since 2001 with 2 more coming in ‘09. Again, #1 in the SEC.

Mr. Hill: I’m a gamblin man myself. Way to play the odds.
At this rate, UFAG’s next title will come in the 2174-2175 season. At this rate, GT will win a title in the 2009-2010 season.

He understands the value of a good education to begin with and a second, he sees a football team that is about to break out on one heck of a run for years to come. Man it is great to be a Techie!!!!!!!

Hey, 78 Dawg…
Stephen Hill has decided to spend the next four or five years playing football and preparing for the rest of his life rather than “partying it up and winning National Championships.”
Sounds like this young man understands the most important things in life; education and solid foundation for the next fifty years.
BTW… When was the last time UGA won a National Championship? -1980
Tech? -1990

I appreciate your commentary. However, looking at the posts from both sides it’s ludicris. Tech has just as many stupid comments as UGA. I would bet that those making the absurd posts are not graduates.
It’s bad on both sides. I graduated from UGA in “84” and trust me both sides have their fair share of “Band Wagon” fans.

Mr. Hill made a wise decision. Years “after” football he will be glad he chose Tech over —-. Not only will he win games but he will be prepared to win in LIFE. Oh, by the way, you can see beautiful girls on Tech’s campus all the time! They may not all be enrolled there but they’re there or never too far away. One call, that’s all, when you ball! GO JACKETS!!!

Stats for nerds. I’m a long time UGA fan, and here are some stats for you to chew on. National Championships since 2001?? UGA-0, Fl.-2, LSU-2. Enough said. When will UGA fans realize that Richt will never win another SEC title as long as Meyer is at Fl, and Saban is at Al. His staff once again has shown that it can’t coach or prepare a team in a big game, and it is a mismatch to put UGA’s 2 coordiantors up against the coaches at Fl.,and Al. BOOBOO is a total joke in big games, and his teams have yet to score in the red zone against quality opponents. He looked like a high school coach this year against Charlie Strong of Fl. And he was totally outclassed by Steele at AL. And as far as these coaches trying to out recruit the big boys on the last big time prospects, give me a break. THey will whiff on all remaining of their 8 targets, and what will the poor UGA fans say again this year. Can’t get all of them. Right, how about can’t get any of them. That should be the new motto for RIcht and this pathetic staff he has assembled. That along with can’t win the big games should be UGA’s motto for the next 3 or 4 years running. And congratulations to Stepen Hill for seeing through the lies of Tony Ball. IF UGA’s coaches had their act together this kid along with the Bowman kid from Henry county would both be UGA’s, but these lazy a** coaches of UGA’s seat on their hands and watched Al, and Ga.Tech steal these two kids right under their noses. Thought Richt and his wonderful staff had closed the borders on the state of Ga. in recruiting. Right, forget about these two kids. IF UGA had Berry at Tenn., Morgan Burnett at Ga.Tech starting at safety, and if they put Branden Smith and the Reid d.b from Lowndes with them, UGA would have the best secondary in SEC other than Fl. But it want happen, because these coaches at UGA can not close the deal in recruiting. THus, they can’t close the deal on the field either. One last thing wouldn’t it be great if UGA had Allen Bailey the stud D.E. at Miami instead of this loser kid they got stuck with Toby Jackson. I know UGA fans, can’t get them all, but RIcht owns the state in recruiting. HA!Ha!Ha! See all UGA fans on Feb. 4th crying and chanting their new motto.

Wow, some of the nastiest comments I’ve seen from dawg fans on this blog. I believe Mr. Hill has stuck a nerve. Welcome to the rivalry Stephen!

I hope this kid knows how to block, because in the Tech offense those skills will be more important than catching the ball. Does he think A. J. Green at UGA would have deen such a star in the Tech offense this past year? No way. A. J. Green will someday cash big NFL checks while this kid will be left wondering what happened to his NFL dreams. They were dashed in the Johnson offense.

Who Cares - for someone who doesn’t care you certainly have a lot of trash coming out of your mouth. REAL UGA fans support their team and not constantly trash the coaches and players. You should be thankful for what Richt and his staff has brought to our program. Since you’re a long time “fan”, then you must remember what things were like from 1993 until Richt was hired. Life certainly has been good in the Bulldog Nation since Richt arrived. With limited scholarships you can’t get them all. We’ve got an outstanding class right now and I think we’ll land some more outstanding recruits after this last week of recruiting.

Yech fans are absolutely hysterical!!! All this talk about how horrible UGA’s receivers are can’t be more ironic. Yech fans would give up their daddy’s stash of Playboys to have A.J. Green.
Also, Hines Ward is going for his second ring this weekend. Probably go down as one of the greatest of all time. I can’t seem to remember a Yech receiver that could even sniff his jock :)

Hes been in the pros for a handful of years so his stats cant compete yet, but in that time Ward couldnt carry his wallet. When was Ward drafted? If your not in jail for nailing your daughter twelve years from now get back with me so we can compare stats. And yes, your hands down the most ignorent piece of trash on any blog, anywhere. You’ve been shiing on kids for making decisions on where they want to go to school…. Your trash on a level of epic proportions…. Reality Yech=fktard!!

HAHAHAHAHHA!!!! So you’re going to GUESS and ASSUME he does better? I’d bet you on your single-wide trailer that you share with your mom/sister and 3 step diddy’s and uncles, that he never even gets to a Super Bowl. He’ll get lost in the shuffle and be yet another bust that was sold on POTENTIAL only. He already has the back of the 50 year old. He won’t have a fraction of the stellar career as Ward.
I love how miserable and angry you are at the fact that UGA has a receiver in the pros that has accomplished more than ANY Yech receiver EVER will. Your anger, bitterness and hatred towards your pointless life puts a smile on my face. :)

buzz- his “original commitment” was to Central Florida so no he didn’t honor that!
And wes- the reason GT has the oldest stadium in D-1 is because you guys don’t win enough to make enough money to upgrade to a big boy stadium. And yes, it is a p** poor stadium and anyone besides delusional Tech fans will tell you the same.

How more stupid and pathetic can techies get? Hmm, let’s see. Hines ward is not only a Super Bowl MVP, but he holds every receiving record in the Steelers history books, which just happens to be the greatest franchise in the NFL.
You’re dingleberry eatting fool to even mention Calvin in the same breath as a living legend like Hines Ward.
And like RY said, CJ has a horrible back. He’s going to be one of those “if only he was healthy” types.
Tech fans are dumber than dirt!!!
