Alabama emerges as serious contender for Lowndes DB Greg Reid

Greg Reid wasn’t sure he was going to visit Alabama last Thursday night. He was checking out flights for Tennessee.

But Reid ended up going to Alabama the next day, and now it looks like the Crimson Tide is a serious contender.

Reid joked with friends and classmates at school on Monday, repeatedly saying “Roll Tide.” But he was very serious when he talked about his impression of Alabama coach Nick Saban.

“He wasn’t like some of these other coaches, making all these promises and promises … [Saban] looked me in the eyes and said ‘I can’t really say that you’re going to come in here and start. You’ve got to come here and be ready to compete because the best man plays.’ That’s what I wanted to hear. [Saban] is a straight-up guy. That’s the kind of coach I like.”

The All-America defensive back from Lowndes said he will make an official visit to Georgia on Friday, even though at least a half-dozen schools — including Miami, Auburn, and Tennessee — are trying to bump the Bulldogs out of the way.

Reid claims no favorites among Florida State, UGA and Alabama.

Is it me, or is half of the SEC already tired of this guy? HE SEEMS TO JUST WANT ATTENTION! I never thought as a UGA fan that UF fans and UGA fans would have much in common, but it’s plain to see that this is a selfish and non commital kid. Ihope he enjoys it now, because you want here his name around the SEC come Sept. Some kid is working out hard to fill A.A.’s corner spot, and don’t forget Dawg fans, Brandon Smith, not Greg Reid is considered the top corner in this state, and he is DAWGPOUND bound. a team player.

Carter, I went to Tech. I’m going to trust you are being facetious. The Admissions Department would terminate anyone allowing him to take a visit. Now, he can visit during the season as a visiting player, but he’s not going to Tech. Hell, I don’t think he can matriculate at Georgia.

when it comes to kids with little or no loyalty to their home state there is no telling where they will go. To even consider a school like alabama does not reflect kindly of you. If you do not receive an offer from UGA or GT then your options are wide open. But if you did receive an offer from the schools in Ga and you cross the state lines to attend school then you should never enter the state again —not even for a visit. Do not come home to Ga looking for a job because you have demonstrated that you are no better than deserter saban. Just remember saban can look you in the eyes and tell you anything because he is an accomplished liar. You juat have to be smart enough to realize that when his lips are moving he is probably lying. Otherwise, everything will be fine in 2009.

Big Mike, You nailed it. I never thought I would have anything in common with my Florida friends. However, this kid is a joker. Do we really want a kid of such low character that he would jerk around at least 5 major universities. I’m going to promise the entourage on signing day will stretch into the parking lot. Cut the garbage!!! Mark, we don’t need this. Let’s go with what we got. This kid is not someone you want to be in a foxhole with. Heck, I wouldn’t want to be in a gymnasium with him.

And I really don’t give a darn about some Bama Butt kisseres talking about how they “Love little Greg, you can come right in and start”. If this kid qualifies, the college rankings should immediately drop.

It would seem that some of these blogges don’t get it. Seems like they’re purposeful trying to sway Greg Reid away from Georgia. If Greg Reid comes to Georgia … he’ll be All Everything. He is a QUALITY athlete. Most 18 year olds take their minutes of fame and I don’t blame them. It will all be settled when he signs on the dotted line. CMR has done a good job of taking what he has and getting the max. Greg Reid needs to come to Georgia and play opposite Andrea. Georgia will be his best bet … but I really don’t know where his young mind and desire will take him. Blessings to you… no matter where they go we should be encouraging and helping all these recruits.

If Reid likes honest and straight forward coaches, those are qualities that Richt and his team are known for. Bloggers frequently speculate on issues they personally know nothing about. Reid would be an outstanding team player at UGA and he, along with Smith, would be outstanding cover corners as well as offensive threats. Most of the negative blogging is from Bama and FSU fans trying to turn the kid off on UGA. When he comes to UGA he will be loved and respected for his skills, abilities, and teamwork. He is a GEORGIA guy and UGA is where he needs to be.

Remeber this kid is 18 years old. After Reid got the Under Armour player of the game trophy he has been FLOODED with attention. It is in his best interest to find the best fit from all the offers.Reid liked everything about Florida except Coach Meyer can be a little intimidating. He enjoyed visits to FSU and Bama. As for Georgia, Reid can start on Defense and take over Logan Gray’s punt return being Gray has moved to #2 QB. Right now Reid is focusing on getting his grades up. If he does not qualify then Georgia will hold his scholarship and help him at Hargrove Military School to get the grades up.
Good Luck Reid We can use you at UGA! GO DAWGS!

It wasn’t coach Meyer that was intimidating about Florida it was their depth chart at corner. The 2 starting spots are solidly cemeted by 2 all-sec performers that will only be a jr. and a sophomore next year.

As they say in the military, Reid pooped in his mess kit when he “became more important than his word”. A life long Gator Fan, he had his ship pulled on his visit to G’ville, due to his behavior. Subsequent decisions and statements from Reid have been bizarre. He may now be a Juco signee who spends 2 years in BFE growing up. Talented but self destructive.

This kid isn’t going to UGA, he will probably end up at FSU with his teammate from Lowndes who is a d.b. and has already committed to FSU. After listening to this kid, he seems to be easily influenced by what coaches say. He committed to Meyer and his B.S. to start with, and now with Saban blowing smoke up his a** about getting him to the NFL which is all this kids cares about, it will either be Al. or FSU. UGA has no chance with this kid. Richt will preach to him, and the kid will say thanks but no thanks. After all, does UGA need another Toby Jackson fiasco? This kid will probably be at Hargrave, and UGA fans don’t need another year of this Toby Jackson drama. As far as the other big time recruits on UGA’s board. THey are dropping like flies, and none of the BIG eight, are going to UGA. Great job of closing by Richt and his pathetic coaching staff. Wonder why this time of the year is so depressing for UGA fans, and other teams fans are so excited. Watch Feb. 4th, and see what these blogs say. Bye, Bye, (Kenney, already gone, Massie, Jarvis Jones,Marlon Brown,Reid,Orson Charles, and Starling. Great job of closing by UGA’s wonderful staff. 0 for 8 is a good way of measuring how well this clowns close big time recruits. Can’t wait to hear all the UGA fans say,(Can’t get them all)…

Beware Bama fans - Reid is as flakey as it gets. Next week he’ll be talking about his great visit with TX / USC / whoever. He’s enjoying the attention, which may be his “15 minutes.”

He sounds selfish, which a Meyer or Richt would not tolerate. If he pans out, he’ll be another head case like “T.O.” Its all about him.

Good riddance - I’ll take an unselfish team player with one less star any day. Go Gators.

Reid would be a perfect fit at that cesspool called Florida State. He is a Bowden type kid, all about himself and whose word means nothing. I don’t care with which of our rivals he ends up, Greg Reid is Gator Bait and I’m quite confident he will hurt and disrupt any team he plays for.

It’s funny to see his quote about Saban and having to compete at Alabama because his fear of competition and a deep depth chart is exactly what scared him away from Florida.

He is completely different from Aaron Murray, a Florida kid that I hated to see go to the Dawgs. Murray didn’t like Florida’s depth chart, either, but was straightforward about choosing Georgia, didn’t play games and just recruited hard for UGA. I wish him the best, except when he plays Florida. Greg Reid, on the other hand, will be a Willie Williams type footnote when all is said and done, mark my words.

gratefuldawghead, Did you go to Georgia? I did and I graduated in 85. I’m proud of my degree. I’m also proud when the players representing Georgia exhibit a modicum of intelligence. I don’t care if he is trying out for the debate team, the band or the football team. He is going to the University of Georgia. Georgia has developed a fine academic reputation. You can look it up. Alabama REMAINS Alabama—You can look that up as well in any college guide on sale. I’m sure a Renaissance Man like Nick must gag everytime he hears those cornpones that surround him. For the money he is being paid, he would probably have the 1963 version of George Corey Wallace over for brunch. This Reid kid should not be in college as a sprinter, debator, football player, or band member. Read his comments. Listen to him talk. I have some semblance of pride. Maybe it’s because I went to school at Georgia.

I’m surprised LSU hasn’t set this kid up with his pick of one of their Cajun Cuties. Most corrupt, morally decadent, academically challenged football programs in America. I believe the reason LSU always has such outstanding defensive linemen is because LSU is one of the few elite football teams in America that will get these kids in. Every study has demonstrated that defensive linemen are the hardest to qualify academically, BUT when you have NO qualifications academically!!

OR go get your copy of any collegiate guide. Alabama is right there with Miss. St. when it comes to academic excellence. Read the guides!! Don’t rely on what I say. Read the guides. Alabama is a joke. GREAT football program led to prominence by a backwoods cheat of the highest order. When he could no longer cheat, he suddenly left us. His proteges have included Charley Pell, Danny Ford and “others”. Alabama is what it is. A university and a state living in a visceral fashion via the exploits of its corrupt football program. Bama41UGA30, I would agree that 99.9% of 18 year or 17 year old recruits would not have deserved this level of invective. However, if you look at the actions and comments of this young man, it is almost as if he is trying to illicit this type of response. I would say the argument of his age would not hold much water because of the behavior of all the other kids his age that comport themselves quite well.

My son, who is a recruiting guru for one of the schools in the equation, first called this guy to my attention with a call this weekend when he said “Dad, you gotta read this crap” Now I’m too old to follow the nuances of the recruiting cycle, but I must say that this young man appears to have some problems associated with self worth. Nobody who is as confident as this guy portrays himself would behave in this manner. Does that justify the remarks made in his direction? No. But the way I understand recruiting, the remarks he has made transcend waving a cape in front of a bull.

Go about your business. Say something nice about every visit. Give due deliberation and choose a school. Is that difficult?

When it’s all said and done Greg is going to wish he had just stuck to the game plan and went with UF. Just like the comments made in several other blogs, it not going to matter where he ends up, he still is going to have to put in the work to earn a spot on that football field. I think the kid is just spoiled and likes all the attention. Word in Valdosta is that he is just riding the wave just to get to go on trips and receive free merchandise anyway. Words also say that he’s going to FSU. Obviously, there isn’t anyone leading or giving this kid any guidance about making the right decision. Because if they were they would make him keep his mouth shut, take his visits, and just conduct business on signing. Don’t know who is guiding him but any intelligent person would know not to choose Fla. State over UF and UGA. Someone really needs to sit down with this kid because it’s obvious that he doesn’t know what he is doing at this point. He sounds confused to me especially after he just walked away from UF. I guess i just don’t see the point. All of these schools are going to be deep at CB. All i can say is that i wish he would sign with a coach like Richt, or Meyer because if not i see this kid getting into some trouble at FSU. Greg if your reading this, you really need to think hard about what you’re doing here. You should probably reconsider the hold UF thing. I think that program was very genuine about recruiting you. All the best jumped on the bandwagon after the under armour game. Son, be loyal to the one who has been loyal to you. Don’t look back and regret this decision. Soon all the limelight will be over and the truth is going to come out. Think about what you’re doing. Are you actually going to pick one of those programs over UF? If so, then you’re not as smart as i thought you were. Don’t care how you look at it but all the rest are just second best right now. Point blank.

31-0 at the half?!!

Interesting to see where this kid will land!

My bet it is with Bama.

UGA fans - you recruiting class is done - quick comments on your top targets:

BEST BET:

Orson Charles - UGA in the mix - but wants to stay in state. His family wants him to play at FSU or Florida. UGA is a long shot due to family considerations.

OTHERS:

Marlon Brown - UGA desperate attempts at Hill speaks volume. Brown will not attent UGA.

Jarvis Jones - UGA is an afterthought - his serious three are Bama, TX and USC. Clemson has outside shotas this was his early favorite. They are recruiting hard.

Kwame Geathers - UGA in mix with SC and Clemson. My bet is SC - UGA still has outside shot.

Bobby Massie - rumor is Bama is the team to beat. UGA is no longer in the mix

Reid - Likes Bama and FSU. UGA in the mix - but is now a long shot. Will wind up at BAMA or FSU.

Jawanza Starling - down to UGA and FSU. Will go to FSU - his family and HS coaches are pushing FSU.

TOBY JACKSON - GA Military!!!!! Ouch, this hurts!!!!

I think this kid has finally found the right place for him. I base this upon the belief that a man is no better than his word. I think it is reasonably clear that this kid and Saban are cut from the same cloth. Looks like a perfect match.

I am getting kind of sick of these guys. If reid wants to go to Alabama lt him. Reid if you read this remember that you haven’t done anything yet to prove that you can start at Ga. or even get on the field. Enjoy your 15 minutes of fame it may be the last you ever have.

I guess he wants to go to a school where the most telling statistic of the head coach and the program is the staggering about of players who player for Richt the Almight end up getting arrested every year. On top of that, the only excuse we get is “they are just being kids”. Being an Alabama fan, I thought our fans can be rather arrogant. But hell, you guys make us look the most modest people on the planet. UGA is a solid program and a solid school but it is not the be all end all of existence for college football. If you dont believe me, look up UGA’s last national title. Richt is certainly a good coach but he is not the God you guys make him out to be. If you dont believe me, look at the terrible lack of discipline on and off the field. UGA leads the country in off season arrests and was second in the nation when it came to most penalized teams. Try giving all of your BS a rest and try laying off a 17 year old kid because he may not go to UGA. And lay off the slamming of UA too seeing as how we beat the living shi! out of your guys this year in your house. Besides, Reid is going to FSU anyway!!

Our attempts for Stephen Hill had more to do with losing Kenney than Marlon Brown. We might not get Brown, but you are reaching. Stick to Bama recruiting….

SecIsFootball, I believe that most of the arrogance, justifiably, coming from Georgia fans pertains to the difference in academic standards between Georgia and Alabama. One link demonstrated a 25 position differential and the Bama fan posting it believed that to be nothing.

Alabama is what it is. A football power in a backwoods state with literally nothing else going on. No pro teams, no night life, high spouse abuse rates, high drunk driving death rating, low per capita income, horrific health care numbers—Alabama is football. To make matters worse, the high school football players worthy of attention are miniscule. This results in “Alabama” players actually being from all over the Southeast.

Mobile is a nice city, Birmingham and Montgomery are known solely for Civil Rights atrocities. Oh, I forgot Selma. What else is actually there? A George Wallace Memorial?? Pitiful state that fortunately has an outstanding football tradition or the inferiority complex would be mind boggling.

Greg Reid will be a Phi Beta Kappa at Alabama. Hell, Kenny Stabler was probaly Magna Cum Laude.

You know, I never thought of that. I’m sitting here trying to think of something associated with Alabama besides Alabama, Auburn, Rosa Parks, Bull Conner and church bombings. What do you guys associate with Alabama?

Wow..all of this looking down on the quality of education of other educational institutions coming from “Basketball 101 University” sometimes better known as JKU (Jan Kemp Univ.). Anybody from JKU know how many points a 3 point shot is worth in basketball? I know the basketball team has no clue, but I was just curious if any one else on campus might know.

Reading this leads me to think people believe there was no racism or segregation in Georgia ever. I attended both schools and the better nightlife is a toss up. Its changed within the last couple of years, but the bars didnt close in Ttown til 5am most nights. UGA fans need to get over themselves and actually win something. Start small and win the SECeast. 31-0 at half

Nick Saban is the most straight-up guy in the SEC…….He will treat you fairly Greg, and you will get a quality education, and much more national exposure than at some other schools simply because of TRADITION THAT NO OTHER SEC SCHOOL CAN MATCH…..E’NUF SAID!!!

Riff Raff….I hate to tell you but a college education is what you make of it after you graduate. I graduated from UA in 1997 from the business school which is one of the best in the South. I am sure you will disagree but look it up if you must. Plus, it is not like all these recruits who end up at UGA are all the equivalent of Myron Rolle. These kids are not all majoring in pre-med, pre-law or business. So give this high and mighty crap a rest.

As for the state of Alabama, I recommend that you travel outside of the city of Atlanta if you want to see backwoods, podunk towns. Ever been to Macon, Lagrange, Delohnega, Forsythe, Metter, Statesboro, Swainsboro. Not exactly what you would call big city life. If not for Atlanta, this state would be on or below the state to the west you belittle. And, correct me if I am wrong, but doesnt the state of Georgia, year in and year out, have the lowest SAT and ACT score in the country? Why do you think UGA has to take so many kids from out of state and turns down so many kids in state. Yeah, the state school turns down kids who want to go to UGA. North Carolina is a more prestigious school that Drunk U up in Athens and they make it easy for instate kids to get in and much harder for out of state kids. I guess the state of Georgia doesnt have the quality instate kids to take. If all you have on Alabama is one nice city and issues of segregation in the 1960’s in Birmingham and Montgomery, I can only assume you have not been to either of these towns recently. Plus you are only going to believe what is in that narrow mind of yours any way.

UGA is a fine school and I wont say otherwise. You ignorant UGA fans who want to bash UA simply because a high school recruit is interested, get a life and quit getting so upset by the decisions and comments on 17 year old kids! It is pretty sad and pathetic. But then again, having been around UGA fans in Athens on game day, it is par for the course. Aint nothing finer in the land…Than a drunk obnoxious Georgia fan!

Ummmm what are you talking about? Ttown is one of the best college towns if not the best in the south. Plenty of bars and parties going on everywhere so get your facts right. I just dont know why UGA are hating so much. I mean we lost to florida but im not talking s** about them we lost get over it look at next season. Just cause we kicked your butts on your own field dosent mean you have to be hatters. And for race im black and have lived in both places. Its the south theres always gonna be issues trust me its no more in Bama then in athens

I think its funny to have Georgia slamming Alabama. What a joke! What is Georgia known for Forsyth County “Home of the KKK”, Six Flags, Macon, Lester Maddox, the underground, etc,… It is very funny to hear how some individuals can be so pompous, ignorant and arrogant all at the same time. The only difference between the 2 states is Birmingham and Atlanta and anyone that has lived in both will pick Birmingham. I live here and don’t think it’s a bad place but I find it funny that some on here act like complete douche bags and have no idea what they are talking about.

It’s amazing that this kid describes Nick Saban as “real” and a “straight-up guy?” Saban is a toad and has screwed over many people and teams (see the Dolphins), only thinking about himself.

i pray that greg reid will go were he is needed the most, and were he can be a really good asset. You guys, he’s a kid, learning how to grow up, and he is in a transitional stage, where he is leaving the immature childish ways behind, and entering into a new world, gowing into a young man, and he operative word here is young, he is owning up to his mistakes, and most of all he is realizing his problems, and apologizing for the mistakes he has made. give him a chance. Did you know that greg reid and four star cornerback, safety jamal reid are cousins…I can only say it was a lbessing for my famliy to see both boys out there on the field representing the reid family in a very positive way. may God Bless them Both and forever keep them in his grace.
