Will Lowndes DB Greg Reid still take official visit to UGA?

Greg Reid is scheduled to take an official visit to Georgia on Friday, but rumors are swirling that he may switch out UGA for another school.

Reid confirmed to the AJC on late Sunday night that at least three schools - Miami, Tennessee, and Auburn - have requested that he bump the Bulldogs to take recruiting trips to their respective campuses. However, Reid said he will stick with his plans to travel to Athens.

“I’m going to Georgia this weekend, that’s where I’ll be,” Reid said.

Will Reid try to visit at one other schools before next Sunday? As a one-day visit or “quick trip”? “Some people have talked to me about that. I doubt it, but I don’t know … I really don’t know.”

In other recruiting news, Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, who is committed to Georgia Tech, was offered by archrival UGA and scheduled to meet with UGA’s coaches on Monday.

Back to Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year: He did say he wanted to make one thing clear: He will indeed be announcing his college choice on signing day (Feb. 4). Reid said if he takes his fifth and final visit, it will before Sunday, unlike Tampa tight end Orson Charles, who will announce after visiting Southern Cal on Feb. 13.

“I don’t see how he [Charles] does it,” Reid said. “There’s just no way I’m doing anything like that. I’m not waiting any longer than signing day. I’m ready to get this [recruiting] over.”

Things change by the minute with the All-America defensive back from Lowndes. Reid had said he was going to take a recruiting trip to Alabama this past weekend, then considered switching to Tennessee, then ended up visiting with the Crimson Tide. Forgive Reid for the brief confusion, as he has been overwhelmed by college recruiters since winning MVP honors at the Under Armour all-star game earlier this month. He is arguably the nation’s hottest prospect.

Reid said he was impressed with Alabama, but claims no favorites among Florida State, UGA and the Crimson Tide. He was committed to Florida for nearly a year, then broke it off a few weeks ago because he felt like he “rushed” the decision. Reid eliminated Florida after an official visit on Jan. 16 because “It didn’t feel like home anymore. I wish the Gators the best. It’s just not the place for me.”

He didn’t want to go to Florida because there is no where for him to play on defense. Florida is loaded in every position. However, you still receive a ring for being on the bench.

Whoever gets this guy gets a non-team player and a possible poison on their team (and obvious character issues). Remember, the team with litttle or no talent on the CB depth chart and can “assure” Reid that he will start as a freshman (even though he has never put on a college uniform…meaning, tell him what he wants to hear) will get this guy = this is FSU!!! Good luck to the both of you. The Gators would have loved to have you come to Gainesville, become a team player, work hard, and earn your way on the field for the National Championship team. But I guess that was asking way too much of a prima donna high school player, and you would obviously rather go play for Free Shoes U in the ACC or get your butt kicked in the SEC by the Gators.

Tampa Gator must have his feelings hurt pretty bad. The kid did not want to go to UF. That does not make him all the negative things you said about him. You are the prima donna. Quit pointing your finger at this kid. He can play where he wants.

Kid you won’t be on the Field at UGA,UF,ALA or LSU, for alot of playing time in your first year, like UGA,these other schools have talent in waiting. You will realize when you get there, that you are lining up against the best, and competing every snap against the best. Prince Miller has one corner locked down, and isn’t the kid Brandon Smith rated a better corner? Kid this is the SEC, and teams like, UGA,UF,and Ala, have three deep at each position that made Rivals,Espn, and Parade All American teams. My advice to you, take it all in stride, and get prepared, because every minute you lose traveling to this school, or that school, some upcoming sophomore is in the gym, or running bleachers at 6:30 in the morning reminding himself that he wants to play on Saturdays, and be the man again !

Why does the AJC continue to write about this spoiled brat? The kid needs to shut his mouth, make his visits and sign on the dotted line. What an immature asshat. His parents need to be slapped into reality. Just another punk with an ooversized ego.

It’s so funny reading what the Gator fans have to say about this kid now that he has removed Florida from his list. Funny how they were all praising him for how talented he is and how he would be welcomed to the Gator “family” when he was committed. Now he’s a spoiled brat, has character issues, not a team player, is scared to compete, etc., etc.

He changed his mind. Get over it. Let the kid make the most important decision of his life without all the nonsense. Come on, really, how many of you have actually met Greg Reid? I’m sure none. So you don’t know him or anything about his family. I hope he or anyone in his family doesn’t actually reads any of this from the Gator fans. How would you feel if this was your son or someone in your family and people who don’t even know you were ripping you apart?

Florida is loaded next year, but so is UGA, Alabama, LSU and Fl State looks like they are starting to get back to where they were. Tenn will be better with Kiffin and that staff. Regardless of where he goes to school, he will be at a great university with a great football history. He will get an excellent education and have the opportunity to play football in front of thousands of fans every Saturday at the highest level of college football.

As a graduate of Lowndes and UGA, I hope he comes to UGA. It will be fun to see him and Smith at CB the next few years (assuming both develop as expected). With the kid Boykin from last year, would be an extremely talented CB group.

Reid visits Alabama? If he don’t like Urban Meyer yelling at him at Florida, he’s in for a crude awakening if he thinks Nick Saban will be any different. Probably be worse!! Kid wants playing time from day one. Whoever promises that is where he’ll end up going to. My guess is Tennessee!!

UGA and National Championship? I would not get your hopes up. Also I don’t see him going to play for Elaine Kiffin. As much as he hates UF …my guess FSU.

By Dawg fan

January 26, 2009 9:26 AM | Link to this

If he wants a coach who will help him both in football and in life, Richt and his staff are the place to be. He would play quickly at UGA on what looks to be a great team. FSU still has the NCAA ruling coming and that could be probation as well as limited scholarships for the next few years. Probation would be no Bowl games and no televised games as well as hurting future recruiting. Nobody knows for sure what the NCAA will do but a ruling is coming and that is for certain. Don’t think I would want to bet a career on just where that axe might fall.

Dawg fan… the ruling against FSU was expected last week. It did not and they are worried it will effect last minute decisions. They have every right to be concerned. Reid has many options, just don’t think FSU will be in the final mix. That hugh question mark would be enough to scare most players away. The rebuilding at FSU just slowed down and could be felt for the next 2-3 yrs.

Greg Reid has a cousin Jamal who is going to Miami and the Miami Herald reports he is considering the Canes. I doubt it though. The problem is UF tried to force him to commit about a month ago and like all of these kids, he wanted to take his free trips and get the free gear.

Urban Meyer overplayed his hand. My guess is he’ll end up at UGA or FSU. I forgot about the possible NCAA sanctions or FSU might be the more likely destination.

These kids are making an important decision but it all comes down to where they will feel most comfortable. If I were a defensive player, I’d have to give UT a serious look with the NFL caliber coaching they have in place.

I must say, you UGA/SEC fans are DIEHARD!! Watch out for the ACC though. They are improving because they have added some tremendous coaches in recent years. They will never match the tradition but in the next 3-5 years don’t be surprised if they pull some upsets.

1 week to go and UM still doesn’t have an OC and the DC just left. I like Randy Shannon, but he is going to mess around and get fired.

Talking about playing as a freshman? Has everybody forgotten Brandon Boykin? It’s not likely a corner is going to start as a freshman at UGA. He may get msoe playing time, but start? Not likely, in my HO. If he wants to start as a freshman, he needs to go somewhere other than Athens.

Look at yourself and stop being ignorant.

I copied this from somewhere and thought you guys may like to see it. It seems so appropriate in a thread like this.

Roll Tide Altie

a) The recruiting services do not hate your school, they are not biased against your school and they do not automatically drop kids in the rankings as soon as they commit to your school. Kids move up and down and rankings are volatile. When a commited kid moves up, that school’s fan say “finally; he was way underrated before.” When he moves down, they say “Ridiculous; the gurus are punishing him for picking (my school).” Try this on: maybe the gurus aren’t biased; maybe you are.

b) Not every 3* kid who commits to your school is a “sleeper”. Sometimes, he’s just a 3. If he ran a 4.42 with a 38” vertical, and you find yourself saying “The scouts are insane to have a kid with his athleticism ranked as a 3,” stop and remind yourself that the recruiting services already know about his 4.42 and 38” vertical. Maybe he got as high as 3* because of his pure athletic ability. Maybe other than those two things he doesn’t have much to sell you on at all.

c) In 90% of cases, until a kid has played college football and established what he is capable of, the recruiting rankings and scouting analysis is all you’ve got (unless you’re a scout yourself and have access to game film: raise your hand if that’s the case). If you trust the services, then a 5* is a 5* and a 3* is a 3*. Sure quibble a bit because you’ve got your biases in terms of style or fit, but that’s on the margins. If you don’t trust the services, then don’t get excited when your school lands a blue chip prospect. What’s silly is when a fan base lands the 30th best recruiting class in the country, by the numbers, and the fans say “The recruiting rankings are junk; I wouldn’t trade this class for anyone’s except maybe USC’s.”

d) The other teams are not scared of you and the other coaches are not scared of you. Your rival didn’t just offer that 5* corner because he saw the WRs you are bringing in. He didn’t panic, thinking “Oh my god, we need more corners!” And your conference opponents are not panicking at their inevitable failure to block all your blue chip d-linemen. You just got a couple of blue chip corners in this class? Great. Don’t trot out the tired “No one’s going to be able to throw on us in 2 years” nonsense, because your cross-state rivals just happened to land 2 blue chip WRs and is thinking “No one’s going to be able to stop our passing attack.” All across the country there are blue chip WRs being covered by blue chip corners, and sometimes these guys win and sometimes those guys win.

e) Not every kid who takes a depth chart into consideration is “afraid of competition.” Some of them are just being practical. It’s one of the most prevalent double standards in recruiting; a kid that turns down your school because you are deep is afraid of competition, and a kid who turns down your school despite a glaring need is crazy if he thinks he is going to crack the depth chart at the school he did pick.

f) If you had an All-American linebacker who came in at 6’3” 220 with a 4.55 40, and you just recruited a linebacker who’s coming in at 6’3” 220 with a 4.55 40 … you can see where this is headed, right? It doesn’t mean anything.

g) “I want kids who want to play for (my school)” is a nice sentiment, but it’s comfort food for the recruitnik. It basically means every kid who turns you down is a kid you didn’t want, and every kid you landed is the kid you did want. End result: you got exactly the class you wanted. Yay!

h) on (g), see also “Trust the coaches.” I trust the coaches. I love the coaches. If the coaches offered 3 QBs and they all turned you down and he went and found a “sleeper”, do not insist that he is a great prospect just because you “trust the coaches”. The coaches had him as Plan D. If the coaches go out in April and offer a lower rated kid before they offer some of the blue chip prospects, yes, trust the coaches. They must have had a reason for making the offer. But parcel your trust our carefully. It’s not a universal defense for poor recruiting.

i) Do not offer up proof by anecdote; it makes you look simple. Yes, Braylon Edwards was a 3* WR. Guess what … he’s one in a hundred. Adrian Arrington, Mario Manningham, David Terrell, Marquise Walker, Steve Breaston and Jason Avant were 4s and 5s. I’ll take my chances on the blue chip prospects instead of betting that every 3* is going to turn out to be Braylon Edwards.

j) The kid you just recruited is not “a faster Mike Hart”, “a more athletic Chris Spielman” or “Vince Young, except with better mechanics.” A faster Mike Hart would be … well, Barry Sanders. IOW, one of the best backs you’ve ever seen at any level. A more athletic Chris Spielman would have been inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a college sophomore. Aim lower

What will the UGA fans say after next year when UGA goes 7-5?? Ohh, i forgot the excuse is already been made, Stafford&Moreno are gone. It’s over for this pathetic coach and his coaching staff.

Greg Reid is likely to be a problem where ever he goes. He wants guarantees of playing time, and eliminated Florida when Urban Meyer spoke frankly to him about breaking his comittment. He felt “disrespected”- this from kid who broke a promise. Sorry, this looks like a spoiled prima donna.

Greg Reid,

Go where you heart tells you to. Dont worry about bloggers and coaches tell you this and that. I am a dawg. Hope you come to UGA.But if you dont, enjoy the university you decide was the best fit for you. Do well in school and on the field and prove the haters wrong.Ask for no guarantees because in life there are none.

!953 Dawg - You are the epitome of class. I’m especially impressed by your criticism of Coach Richt because of his faith. It takes real class to do that. I’m sure you are making someone in your family very proud. Keep up the good work.

A lot of people are making assumptions about his character and they don’t even know him.He isn’t the first kid to change his mind and he won’t be the last.Bottom line the kid is one of the best players in the country. Wherever he decides to play ball next fall he will be a force before he leaves.Unbelievable ball skills,Mr Reid is something else with the ball in hands.

ok,,,greg wants gaurenteed playing time,,,what recruit doesnt? trust me, greg isnt so stupid as to think he will walk in from day 1 and get the starting nod. i think maybe all he’s asking is will he have the chance or is the school just gonna go ahead and make plans to redshirt? no one with any sense at all would just say “ill b happy being a backup for 4 years” and not have a chance to play much. you dont take a job out of high school being the big boss man,,you earn it,, and greg will. would he get more of a closer look? you bet! just like a college grad gets more a closer look of running the comapany you work for than you, even tho youve been there 15 years. thats not to say you arent capable, just means maybe you arent the flavor of the month. IF greg was handed the starting job off the bat and doesnt perform,(tho i doubt that tho he will hit a bump or 2), that coach will take a big hit in the PR area, ya think he wants that?

I go to alabama and actually was with greg reid all friday night. javy arenas brought him over to one of my friends house and we had a great time. greg told me he is either going to florida state or alabama, he said he was done with the georgia bullsh*t. he said willy martinez and mark richt both were doing an aweful job of recruiting him and telling him that staying in-state would make everybody around him happier. he said urban meyer really p** him off on his visit, saying he was letting him down by decommitting. he had nothing bad to say about florida state, but did mention jimbo fisher being a “awesome dude”. greg said that he had no idea how great tuscaloosa was and he wish he discovered it earlier. he will either go to florida state or alabama, greg said the opportunity to play for saban, because he specializes in the secondary, may be the reason he comes to bama. believe what you want from this, but its the truth. sorry georgia fans.

Dawg tired sometimes the truth hurts doesn’t it. Not criticizing Richt about his faith, comparing him to Billy Graham is a compliment, but unfortunately, he is a football coach and not a religious icon. Fact of the matter is Richt and his loyalty which is due to his faith, will cost him his job. THe man can’t close one big time recruit because he can’t speak negatively about other coaches and other schools, and he has no chance when he is up against Meyer, Saban, Stoops, and any other big time coach, because they are all used car salesmen who will lie and cheat and say anything about another coach or another school to get the kid to commit to them. Now all the UGA fans say they would rather have a coach like Richt that tells the truth and never bad mouths another school, well, when UGA continues to lose these big time prospects, and they continue to lose big time games, what will the UGA fans say?? Big time recruits win big time games, unless they are coached up by great coaches, unfortunately UGA doesn’t have great coaches on staff to coach anybody up, and this is where Richt will lose in the end. BOOBOO&Martinez would not have coordinators positions at any other big time school, especially after their performances in big games, yet Richt defends them and refuses to face reality about their shortcomings as coaches, both preparation, and on the field adjustments. His loyalty while it may be admirable is going to continue to get him beat on the field and off the field, because Martinez can’t recruit nor can he coach. Good luck to Billy Graham, hope he gets a job as a t.v. evangalist after football.

1953 Dawg; You are a sad person! You probably are OK with Saban “GD’ing” every couple of minutes on the sideline.

You take a personal swipe at people including Billy Graham. What a loser!
