Will Lowndes DB Greg Reid still take official visit to UGA?

Greg Reid is scheduled to take an official visit to Georgia on Friday, but rumors are swirling that he may switch out UGA for another school.

Reid confirmed to the AJC on late Sunday night that at least three schools - Miami, Tennessee, and Auburn - have requested that he bump the Bulldogs to take recruiting trips to their respective campuses. However, Reid said he will stick with his plans to travel to Athens.

“I’m going to Georgia this weekend, that’s where I’ll be,” Reid said.

Will Reid try to visit at one other schools before next Sunday? As a one-day visit or “quick trip”? “Some people have talked to me about that. I doubt it, but I don’t know … I really don’t know.”

In other recruiting news, Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, who is committed to Georgia Tech, was offered by archrival UGA and scheduled to meet with UGA’s coaches on Monday.

Back to Reid, the AJC’s Player of the Year: He did say he wanted to make one thing clear: He will indeed be announcing his college choice on signing day (Feb. 4). Reid said if he takes his fifth and final visit, it will before Sunday, unlike Tampa tight end Orson Charles, who will announce after visiting Southern Cal on Feb. 13.

“I don’t see how he [Charles] does it,” Reid said. “There’s just no way I’m doing anything like that. I’m not waiting any longer than signing day. I’m ready to get this [recruiting] over.”

Things change by the minute with the All-America defensive back from Lowndes. Reid had said he was going to take a recruiting trip to Alabama this past weekend, then considered switching to Tennessee, then ended up visiting with the Crimson Tide. Forgive Reid for the brief confusion, as he has been overwhelmed by college recruiters since winning MVP honors at the Under Armour all-star game earlier this month. He is arguably the nation’s hottest prospect.

Reid said he was impressed with Alabama, but claims no favorites among Florida State, UGA and the Crimson Tide. He was committed to Florida for nearly a year, then broke it off a few weeks ago because he felt like he “rushed” the decision. Reid eliminated Florida after an official visit on Jan. 16 because “It didn’t feel like home anymore. I wish the Gators the best. It’s just not the place for me.”

Auburn flirts with Tucker DL Deion Roberson

Tucker defensive lineman Deion Roberson said his commitment is solid with North Carolina State, despite Auburn trying to get into the picture last week.

Roberson, a 6-foot-3, 258-pounder who missed the entire season with a dislocated left ankle suffered in the 2008 opener, committed to the Wolfpack after an official visit there two weeks ago.

He said in a text message this past weekend that “Auburn tried to change my mind,” but he “turned them down.”

“I’m happy with N.C. State,” he told the AJC on Sunday night.

Early offers pour in for Henry County WR MarKeith Ambles

With offers pouring in from across the country, MarKeith Ambles from Henry County already has established himself as one of the top players in the 2010 class.

The 6-3, 185-pound receiver has offers from Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Florida, West Virginia, LSU, Arkansas, Nebraska, Central Florida, Ole Miss and South Carolina. California is hot on the receiver and USC recently expressed interest. Ambles said he expects that they might offer soon, too.

Ambles said he has no preference when it comes to school, conference or region of the country. “I’m just taking everything in,” he said.

Georgia and Georgia Tech have contacted the player through “just regular letters,” but have not offered. Ambles had 53 catches for 993 yards and 13 touchdowns last season.

Boston College puts emphasis on grades with Lithia Springs DL

Just because Lithia Springs defensive tackle Bryan Davis committed last week to Boston College doesn’t mean his phone has quieted down.

Sure, other colleges have quit calling, but he estimates he’s had at least a half dozen conversations with Eagles coaches calling to check on him and encourage him as National Signing Day nears on Feb. 4.

“(Defensive line coach Jeff Comissiong) has been helping me out, telling me to stay out of trouble and get good grades. He’s been really supportive,” Davis said.

Davis said Boston College coaches have urged him to get good grades and stay academically focused at a potentially distracting time. “They’re putting emphasis on my grades, and that’s been an emphasis of mine this year, too,” the 6-foot-3, 280-pound player said.

Davis, who had 75 tackles in his senior season at Lithia Springs (2-8), got three As and one B, in French II, on his first-semester report card. He wants straight As down the stretch of his senior year.

“My grades are solid, but I still want to get them better,” Davis said.

Davis generated late interest from Georgia Tech but was not offered.

Harrison RB Godhigh forgoes scholarships to ‘walk on’ at Georgia Tech

After initially committing to Wofford, Harrison running back Robert Godhigh has accepted an invitation from Georgia Tech to become a preferred walk-on for the Jackets.

“He had a full scholarship offer from Wofford and he had a couple of other school like Charleston Southern and Coastal Carolina really recruiting him,” Harrison coach David Hines said.

“But he decided that he really wanted to pursue a preferred walk-on opportunity at Georgia Tech.”

The 5-foot-7, 185-pound Godhigh is one of 10 players expected to gain preferred walk-on status at Tech this year.

He’s designated as a running back and will have an opportunity to compete to return kicks and punts.

Mill Creek DE commits to Oklahoma St. over ACC, SEC schools

Mill Creek’s Ryan Robinson has committed to Oklahoma State, his coach confirmed Monday.

Robinson, a 6-foot-5, 245-pound defensive end, picked the Cowboys following an official visit to Stillwater, Okla., last weekend. Robinson had 85 tackles and five sacks for Mill Creek in 2008.

“Ryan is the most gifted athlete to come through our program and only will excel at the next level,” Mill Creek coach Shannon Jarvis said. “He has tremendous athleticism and is very explosive coming of the ball.”

Robinson also had offers from South Carolina, North Carolina and Kentucky.

Heritage TE Justin Jones ponders East Carolina offer

Heritage tight end Justin Jones returned from an official visit to East Carolina but did not commit.

“I really like Coach [Skip] Holtz,” said Jones. “He just wanted to help me make the best decision for me, whether it was with ECU or not.”

The 6-foot-8, 252-pound senior has an official visit scheduled for Vanderbilt next weekend. He said Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson and assistant coach Des Kitchings are making an in-home visit on Jan. 28.

Jones said Vanderbilt will most likely put him at defensive end even though he mostly played tight end in high school.

Jones said his latest offer came from Georgia State. “I don’t know much about them so I’m not sure about Georgia State,” he said.

Jones was an early commitment to Kentucky, but backed off to consider other schools.

In other recruiting news, Georgia Tech picked up commitment No. 21.

Tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, Fla., rated his official visit to Georgia as a “10”, tying Florida and Florida State.

Lowndes All-America defensive back Greg Reid set the record straight about his official visit to Georgia this weekend.

Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, who is committed to Georgia Tech, was offered by rival UGA on Saturday night.

Dacula wide receiver Cameron Kenney of Dacula committed to Oklahoma over Georgia.

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson urges Miller Grove WR to stay with Jackets

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson took some counter measures during a telephone call on Monday in an attempt to keep the commitment of Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, who is being hotly pursued by archrival Georgia.

And Miller Grove coach Jasper Jewell predicts that Hill will resist UGA’s temptations and sign with Georgia Tech next week.

“I could be wrong, and there are a lot of things to be determined … but right now I think Stephen is going to stay with Georgia Tech,” Jewell said around lunchtime Monday. “He has formed a close bond with the Georgia Tech coaches. They have loved him since day one, even before the recruiting process really started heating up. That’s why I think that way … his relationships with Georgia Tech.”

“But that’s just my opinion. I’m staying out of it. This is Stephen’s life, and his decision. I wasn’t even around when he was talking on the phone [with Johnson].”

Jewell said Georgia Tech called early morning seeking Jewell. “They had gotten wind of the [Georgia] offer, and they wanted to reassure Stephen that he was a big part of their plans.”

UGA coaches were scheduled to meet with Hill by Monday evening. Georgia coach Mark Richt offered Hill on Saturday night.

Mary Persons OT will play defense at Middle Tennessee

So how does a three-year starter at offensive tackle become a college prospect on the defensive line despite having less experience tackling compared to blocking?

“He’s got great feet and he runs so well,” Mary Persons football coach Rodney Walker of his 6-foot-2, 245-pound senior tackle, Jadareius Hamlin, who committed last week to Middle Tennessee State, where he’ll likely start at defensive end. “He has run a 4.75 40 and consistently runs a 4.8. … And I think he had two great camps last summer [at Georgia and Mississippi State] which got him noticed.”

His frame and speed may be better suited to the DL in college, and it’s not like he hasn’t played any defense before, says Walker. It’s just that he was more valuable to the team on offense. “He was so good for us over there [on the OL], we just couldn’t move him,” the coach said. “I think he’ll do well over there and he’s very excited about it. … And if he can’t play there, they already know where he can.”

Hamlin took official visits to Western Kentucky, Troy and Alabama-Birmingham before Middle Tennessee.

UGA makes late charge for Georgia Tech recruit Stephen Hill

Everybody has been waiting all year for UGA and Georgia Tech to go head-to-head in an intense recruiting battle for one of the state’s top football prospects.

It finally happened, about a week away from signing day. UGA offered Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, who is committed to Georgia Tech. The Bulldogs are dispatching coaches to Miller Grove on Monday morning in hopes of convincing Hill to visit Athens on Friday.

“Stephen called me first thing on Sunday to tell me that Georgia coach Mark Richt offered on Saturday night,” Miller Grove coach Jasper Jewell told the AJC. “Stephen was shocked to hear Coach Richt’s voice. He told me he was honored to be offered by Georgia and that he was going to listen to what they had to say. But he said his heart is still with Georgia Tech.”

Earlier on Sunday, wide receiver Cameron Kenney of Dacula committed to Oklahoma over Georgia.

Jewell said he talked with UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner and assistant Tony Ball on Sunday. “Of course, my first question was ‘Why so late with the offer?’

“[Ball] said he just got the job as wide receivers coach. He said he looked at film of all the wide receiver prospects, he was asked who he liked. And [Ball] said ‘Stephen Hill is the guy I want.’”

Jewell said at least two Georgia coaches will be at his school on Monday morning to speak with Hill.

Will Hill switch from Georgia Tech to UGA? “I have no idea. I just try to get my kids some college options and then stay out of the way,” Jewell said. “All I can say is that … as of Sunday night … Stephen Hill is committed to Georgia Tech.”

UGA flirted with Hill earlier this year, and Hill was highly interested, but the Bulldogs never offered a scholarship. Hill was an early commitment to Central Florida last summer, but then switched to Georgia Tech on Nov. 3 after also considering offers from Boston College and Mississippi State.

The 6-foot-4, 185-pound Hill has developed a close friendship with Oconee County quarterback Zach Mettenberger, who has committed to UGA. In an all-star game at Myrtle Beach, S.C., last month, Mettenberger hit Hill in stride for a 68-yard touchdown pass.

Hill is arguably the state’s top overall athlete. In track, he was the 2008 Class AAAA champion in the long jump, while also setting a DeKalb County record by jumping 23-feet, 11 inches. He is also a prospect in basketball, but has decided to play football in college.

“He has tremendous upside,” Jewell said earlier this year. “Once he gets to college, he will put on 15 to 20 pounds. I think he will be the next Calvin Johnson. With the desire he has for the game, he can play on Sundays.”

TE Orson Charles rates UGA visit as “10”, tying Florida and FSU

Georgia is still in the sweepstakes for tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, Fla., but the Bulldogs may have lost their best chance to land him.

Charles made an official visit to Athens this weekend, and UGA coaches were holding out hopes that he might commit before leaving campus. His teammate at Plant High, quarterback Aaron Murray, committed to UGA and enrolled in college earlier this month.

However, while Charles enjoyed the trip, he held off making any college decisions. Charles said his plans “could change at any time” but he will likely wait until after taking an official visit to Southern Cal on Feb. 13 to announce.

“I just got off the phone with Orson and he said he had a really great time at Georgia … loved it,” Plant High coach Robert Weiner told the AJC on Sunday night.

“In the end, it’s going to be a hard decision for Orson because he likes every school. In fact, there has never been a time when Orson visited a school and disliked it.”

Charles claims no favorites among Florida, UGA, Florida State, Southern Cal and Tennessee.

Charles has made recruiting trips to Florida and FSU, and rated them both as a “10.” How did he score his UGA visit? “I’m going to play it on the safe side, and give out another 10.”

WR Cameron Kenney picks Oklahoma over Georgia

Dacula native Cameron Kenney committed to Oklahoma over Georgia on Sunday night.

The wide receiver took a recruiting trip to UGA this weekend and pondered his college choice during his three-hour plane flight back to Kansas, deciding on Oklahoma. Kenney plays at Garden City Junior College.

“The official visit to [UGA] went great, it was better than I could ever imagine,” Kenney told the AJC. “However, I just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to play with the Heisman Trophy winner [Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford] and, more importantly, for the team many pick to win the national championship next year.”

In other UGA recruiting news, Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill was offered by the Bulldogs on Saturday night. Hill is committed to Georgia Tech.

Back to Kenney: He had nothing but praise for Georgia. “They have everything … great players and great coaches. They will be all right without me. Mark Richt, he’s a great man. There was a reason he came into my life … maybe not to be my college coach. [but] maybe to inspire me to be a better person in all aspects of my life.”

Kenney admitted the quarterback situation at both schools played a role in his decision. “Sam Bradford won the Heisman. He turned down the NFL to compete for a national championship again at Oklahoma. There will be a ton of NFL scouts looking at him next year. They need some impact players at wide receivers, and think I can be one of them. What wide receiver wouldn’t want to be part of all that?”

“It looks like Joe Cox is going to be the guy at Georgia next year. I’ve heard a lot of great things about him. But I’ve only got two years of college left. If I was a freshman, my thought process about all of this might be different. I probably would’ve picked Georgia. But I’ve only got two years of college left, and I just couldn’t turn down the chance to play with the Heisman Trophy winner. He’s a proven quarterback, one of the best to ever play college football.”

Carver DB Darren Myles has “surprise” for his final official visit

There’s a surprising contestant in the recruiting sweepstakes for Carver-Atlanta’s Darren Myles Jr.

Guess who? It’s Kentucky, who will get the final official visit on Friday for one of the nation’s top prospects. Although Myles claims no favorites, Kentucky’s chances seem slim against Alabama and LSU.

“Kentucky was the very first school to offer,” Darren Myles Sr., Darren’s father and coach, confirmed to the AJC on Sunday night. “We always said we would visit because of that, and it is an up and coming program.”

The 6-foot-1, 175-pound safety has already taken visits to LSU, Alabama and Purdue, his father’s alma mater. He just returned from an official visit to Tennessee.

“He met mostly with defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin, and the coaches reiterated how he can make an early impact,” Myles said. “There was no pressure, but you could tell they would love to have him there.”

Myles said he will wait until signing day to make a decision but told the AJC that he is no longer considering Georgia Tech.

“I don’t want to be that close to home,” he said earlier. “I want to see what other schools have to offer.”

Last month, Myles said he removed UGA from his list of finalists because he hadn’t heard from the Bulldogs for weeks.

Douglass LB sticking with Alabama over Auburn

Douglass linebacker Jonathan Atchison, who was wavering between Auburn and Alabama, said he remains committed to Alabama.

“I’m just waiting for signing day,” told the AJC on Sunday night.

The 6-foot-3, 226-pound linebacker committed to Auburn over Alabama in August, but Alabama never gave up on him. When Auburn made a coaching change, Atchison changed to Alabama after a meeting with coach Nick Saban.

After committing to Alabama, he said he still planned on taking an official visit to Auburn earlier this month. However, Atchison canceled the recruiting trip, although Auburn coaches still are hoping to change his mind before signing day.
