Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson urges Miller Grove WR to stay with Jackets

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson took some counter measures during a telephone call on Monday in an attempt to keep the commitment of Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill, who is being hotly pursued by archrival Georgia.

And Miller Grove coach Jasper Jewell predicts that Hill will resist UGA’s temptations and sign with Georgia Tech next week.

“I could be wrong, and there are a lot of things to be determined … but right now I think Stephen is going to stay with Georgia Tech,” Jewell said around lunchtime Monday. “He has formed a close bond with the Georgia Tech coaches. They have loved him since day one, even before the recruiting process really started heating up. That’s why I think that way … his relationships with Georgia Tech.”

“But that’s just my opinion. I’m staying out of it. This is Stephen’s life, and his decision. I wasn’t even around when he was talking on the phone [with Johnson].”

Jewell said Georgia Tech called early morning seeking Jewell. “They had gotten wind of the [Georgia] offer, and they wanted to reassure Stephen that he was a big part of their plans.”

UGA coaches were scheduled to meet with Hill by Monday evening. Georgia coach Mark Richt offered Hill on Saturday night.

Stephen,

Stay with the Jackets. This is going to be a high-powered offense, running and catching. Besides, the pros love a WR that can block.

if he has 2 eyes and has watched the bozo 1941 high school offense they run at tech, he better be a good blocker and love to block because that is all he will be doing at the trade school - football degree from tech is about like a GED degree too, so no advantage there either

I am a UGA fan and am not going to uplift or degrade either program. All I will say is if this kid wants a decent chance at playing wide receiver in the NFL, he needs to go to UGA. I’m not knocking Tech or their football program. It’s just that with the offense that Tech runs, passing is not a priority. He will get noticed more as a receiver at UGA and any fan, UGA or Tech has to see that.

Go to GT if you want an engineering degree. Or if you can’t handle it, but still want to go to GT then major in IM or HITS (Joe Hamilton), etc. Go to UGA if your are interested in Pre Med., Pre Law, Accounting/Finance, Journalism, Education, etc. If those programs are too tough then there are less rigorous programs you can pursue at UGA too. I find the previous posts in this thread to be idiotic and narrowly written in a feeble attempt to persuade a recruit who probably isn’t reading them anyway.. Grow up!

Leave the WR gloves in the locker room bc you wont be needing them. Get some heavily padded linemens gloves instead. Keep your hips low and your helmet between the #s, thats about all you need to know if you are playing WR for GT.

WHEN WE SAY MANGEMENT DEGREE, WE ARE USING THE TERM DEGREE VERY LOOSELY. TECH IS NOT EXACTLY KNOWN FOR THEIR HIGH GRADUATION RATES OF FOOTBALL PLAYERS, SO CHANCES ARE A FOOTBALL PLAYER WILL NOT EVER OBTAIN A DEGREE. As a Tech fan, I like hearing that CPJ makes sure that he contacts Stephen when he hears about what CMR did. I think CPJ made the right move to try & get Stephen to stick w/ the Jackets.

If I was CPJ I would be telling him that he was my top WR pick the entire team, he didn’t become UGA’s # 1 WR prospect until a couple of others picked other schools (the JuCo guy choosing OU). The UGA coach saying that Hill was their top WR choice is totally BSing he became their top one after a couple of other guys rejected them.

And I would also be saying that Stephen has a great shot to start as a True Fresh. besides BayBay (tech’s only decent WR). UGA has Green & then several others in front of Hill looking to replace Massoquaoi.

Come to Tech Stephen! Coach Johnson will promise that you will have 8 passes thrown to you in your career.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn to block. The NFL is full of receivers from teams that run the option.

Also, don’t miss out on playing in front of 45,000 screaming fans each week. Your family and friends will be happy too, season tickets can be purchased at half price with a fill up at your local BP station.

The bottom line comes down to do you want to be a blocking receiver who gets the ball every now and then or do you want to run in a traditional pro i-formation where you will learn from Tony Ball who was a great WR coach at VT and several guys in the NFL and run traditional WR routes.

Hill loves the Dawgs and he has a lot of pressure on him right now.

One thing that can not be denied is he is one of the best and top 5 athletes in the state. Football, basketball, track, and excells at each sports. Kid’s upside is huge and he has to figure out where his potential can be tapped into the most. Sorry Nerds, but Athens is the best place for him.

WOW who kicked the bee-hive?

It’s pathetic that you overgrown gnats have to cling to 1 win this millineum on every other post. The last time I checked, rivalries were not measured by 1 game. Start a streak and then boast. 1 is not a streak when the other team has beat your pants off the previous 7 years.

As for Hill, anyone with common sense would know that the options are better for him at UGA than Tech from an NFL potential standpoint. And, I doubt very seriously he will have any problem securing a job no matter which school his degree comes from. That is, of course, he stays long enough to get one.

And who was the idiot challenging UGA’s ability to put players in the NFL?? How many Tech receivers in the NFL (Actually playing please??). The way I see it, UGA-2 Tech-1. And, if I throw in TE’s it’s UGA-4 Tech-1. It would have been 6-1 had not Randy McMichael been in IR and Martrez Milner been on the Giant practice squad.

Whatever the case, you Cry-Ba-BEEs need to stop whining and accept the reality of UGAs superiority over Tech in football.

All you techtypes read and heed!

— Clemson University ranked eighth nationally in a new SmartMoney survey of the best colleges for making money.

The survey, which looks at tuition costs and the earning power of graduates, finds that public universities outpace the Ivy League schools in value in terms of return on investment.

Leading the pack was the University of Georgia, with a 338 percent average payback. Clemson, with a 201 percent payback, far outpaced the top Ivy League school, Princeton University, which had a 132 percent payback.

“This kind of information and analysis will serve us well in the current and future financial environment in which we operate,” said Clemson President Jim Barker.

The ranking was among 10 points Barker listed in an address to faculty and staff Wednesday as reasons that Clemson can look forward to a bright future.

The Wall Street Journal publication noted that elite private schools have low student-faculty rations, big endowments and other assets, but factoring in tuition and future salaries, public schools “may actually deliver a far better bang for your buck.”

A lot of this talk is pointless, but the thing I find most humorous is some the UGA fans reasons. I mean it makes perfect sense that playing in a system that doesn’t focus on passing will actually decrease a players ability to be a WR. So he’ll learn how to block. If he’s a talented and skilled player he can still get into the NFL, have his passing abilities and be able to block better than any other recruit. Basically what UGA fans are saying is come to Athens so you can maybe be a higher rated draft pick and get a bit more money assuming you get a starting position in college.

Georgia Tech fans can take your superiority in academics and stuff it. We all know that the trade school takes players that would have no shot of getting in school if they did not play sports, (that is fact). This is the same at most schools including UGA and is part of athletics, but do not pretend that your athletes are mentally superior to any other schools. Also, I would be embarrassed to post any blog until your team actually plays in a relevant bowl game which they have not in my lifetime….(Sugar, Rose, Fiesta, Orange,) you get the picture. Enjoy those rings apparantly they forgot to tell the players there was one more game to play against LSU.

I find it interesting reading these posts that no one has mentioned that Caleb King was such a highly sought after recruit and, like so many others, has sat on the bench at UGA.

This past season, once Caleb finally got the chance to play, he was yanked right back off the field because the coaches had never taught him how to block.

No one has mentioned Brandon Miller was also highly sought after recruit that played for UGA, but he never played regularly because the coaches didn’t know what to do with him. Brandon can’t make an NFL roster because of his poor college coaching.

Georgia loves to sweet talk players; tell them that they’ll be stars on campus, but the truth be told, they tell every recruit the same thing, and they can’t all be stars.

The other sad state of affairs is that these kids don’t get coached well and end up losing out on possibly being able to move on to the next level, or at least improve their chances.

Look at some of UGA’s players at the combines over the past few years; even this year. The scouts are hesitant about virtually everyone (except Stafford and Moreno this year).

I know this post will upset some people, but that’s okay, deep down, you all know I’m right.

Reggie Brown no good? You GT guys really know next to nothing about football. Is he an absolute superstar? No. But is he consistently at the top in Philly? Yes.

Reggie Brown Set a record for most receptions (43) by an Eagles rookie receiver in 2005

In 2006, he lead all Philadelphia receivers with career highs in rec. yds. (816) and TDs (8) in 2006, while posting 46 receptions

In 2007 he was their third leading receiver (2nd if you consider that their running back, Westbrook, was their leading receiver) with 780 yards (which is 24 more yards than Calvin Johnson had in 2007, with 756 yards, although it was his rookie season)

This year he was hurt.

Top Reveivers on 3rd Down since 2006

Player, Rec., 1st Downs, 1st Down %

Chad Johnson (Cin.) 42 41 97.6 Nate Washington (Pit.) 26 25 96.2 Reggie Brown 24 23 95.8 Devery Henderson (NO) 30 28 93.3 Santonio Holmes (Pit.) 57 53 93.0 *min 20 recepts.

    Common Sense;

How many “blue chippers,” or 4 or 5 Star Athletes, did UGA have on its Roster didn’t make the NFL?

Is it because they weren’t as good athletes as the other players that made NFL rosters? Is it because that weren’t as smart as the other players that made it to the NFL?

You can pull out as many statistics as you want, but at the end of the day, sometimes, they just don’t play out. Some Coaches tell kids whatever they have to get them to commit, regardless of whether it’s true. Once they get the kids on Campus, they fail to teach or train them, or when they get injured they throw them away like damaged goods.

Honest Coaches tell the kids that only a small percentage of them will make it to the pros, but they will have a chance to play for the University and get a great education that will last a lifetime.

A good Coach will teach players how to play the game correctly, and safely, respect for themselves and each other, and if they work hard enough, and they have the talent, then they have a chance to move on to the next level. If they do everything right but don’t have the physical tools to move on to the pros, then they’ll be prepared to face whatever the world will throw at them as an adult.

It doesn’t matter what University they go to; whether it be GA Tech, UGA, Florida, Alabama, Clemson, Auburn, Harvard, or Navy. At the end of the day, you can have a great athlete who can’t learn, or won’t put in the effort and won’t make it on the next level, or a good athlete who has a Coach who takes the time to teach him as a player and as a young man, and they grow as a player and a person. That’s the one who has a chance to make it long term in the pros and the real world.

Whether you want to admit it or not, Georgia hasn’t been coaching their players for a long time. They recruit well, but they don’t coach well.

You will be a big part of their BLOCKING plans. If this kid has any dreams of playing in the NFL, it simply makes no sense to choose an option offense over a pro-style offense. That’s just an objective fact.

I understand what ROI means but what doesnt make sense is that UGA and GT cost the same to attend…yet GT graduates make more. If this is true than why is gt not on your rankings of ROI….its led me to the assumption that you thought tech was a private school. Its kind of suprising but many people think it is private…including companies who hire from tech. Our academics come at an extremely cheap price when compared to other schools ranked very close to us…like NYU and Boston College…so many assume we are private. Send me a link because it does not make sense.

I’m sure the Eagles are happy with those PEDESTRIAN numbers put up by Reggie Brown. Doesn’t even average 3 catches per game. He plays with a probable future HOF QB. That 3rd down stat is lame. Even Brian Finneran has a high percentage of 3rd down conversions, but he’s not worthy of a high 2nd round pick. The Eagles did not draft DaSean Jackson because they were thrilled with Brown’s production. They thought they drafted a playmaker in Brown, realized their MISTAKE and drafted Jackson. If you want a true measure of Brown as a pro, ask a fan in Philly, not a UGA homer.

sigh this gets brought up all the time on these boards… GT got rings from the AA paid for from their bowl reward money… The AA thought rather than give them $300 cash they’d blow on stupid stuff, they’d take half of that and give them rings to commemorate a good season. Since the players made beating UGAg their #1 priority and they achieved that goal, the score was inscribed… And, frankly, this was the first time “this century” that they had been there.

I would love to see uga get this guy, however he needs to make the best choice for him. Ga fans are for the most part kool-aid drinkers and do not realize the talent tech has. Also for those who think a tech degree is so much more prestigous than the Univeristy of Georgia’s, why did i get accepted into tech before i was put on the waiting list at uga. mmmm i guess obama’s right change…

If the rings actually commemorated a season, they would have been marked with season achievements (like the team record) and not the outcome of a single game. See the difference?

    Knowshon Hauls;

I believe the GA Tech rings had a listing of most GA Tech’s significant achievements from last year, not just the UGA victory. The FSU victory may have been displayed as well as the 9 win season for example.

These were all “milestones” the team had established prior to the season and, therefore, wanted recognized on their rings, but the UGA “mention” was the only one that seemed to have gotten the press. Imagine that…

Any receiver who lines up at Yek can expect the ball maybe once a season. Then he has to lateral to the quarterback who then runs a triple option and then they call it RAC(that’s what the qb gains ,not the receiver.) Confused? Sign with Clemson, see the lake and get a real football degree!Oh!and, wear uniforms even uglier than Yek’s.

Let’s put the score on next years ring too since that’s a sure win for GT.

I’m thinking 49-0, we break the series record for largest margin of victory held by GT of course.

I think we should put the score on Goomer Dooley’s statue also since it was on the same day.

How about putting it on Munson’s Grain Alcohol Flask too, right there in the middle 45-42.

You clowns kill me w/ this “next level” BS. How many GA seniors do you think will ever take a snap in a regular season game?

What percentage of recruits at any college ever do for that matter? You jokers obviously think its just like moving from the B-team to the varsity squad. Any recruit that makes his decision based on being schooled for the “next level” is making a mistake. You might as well bank on winning the lottery.

A Very close highschool friend who chose GT (and I do not blame him), who also was a past baseball ACC Rookie of the year / and who rose through the LA Dodger system was given GT test answers.

To all of the GT fans….you can talk the high road.

The factual reality is that GT finds a way to ‘pass’ their high level athletes. I promise this is undisputed truth.

It’s officially disputed. You fail to say whether the test answers came from coaches, faculty, frat bros, frat word,or fellow students. What were they? All students have like seen previous test questions & answers & used them as a study guide.

On a different note, I have a good friend of the John Belushi genre who went to GA on FB scholarship (I don’t blame him) who had his girfriend take all of his exams. Nor did he take his own SAT. All I can say is this is what he told me directly.

In fairness, he also told me Dodd promised him he would graduate from Tech if he signed.

    This stuff is so funny!!!

1st it is a High School Offence then it is luck or 1 win every 8 years then it is a one way show(running the football only). If that is the case then why isn’t Ealey coming to Tech instead of UGA? Also please tell me what a Top 10 recruiting class the last 8 years equals to at UGA?

Ugag always will have the better recruits which in turn means or should mean a better team which means Ugag should never lose to Tech…Right? Wrong!!!!

As for the rings…..Ugag fans don’t do enough research. This is CPJ first year and he beat Ugag on his first try. If he wanted that for his players and commemorate that win(which was one of his goals from day one)by inscribing it on a ring then that is his right.

As for a Pro-Style offence…where was it at in late November? Josh Nesbitt is a Dual Threat QB recruit coming out of HS and CPJ only installed about 25% of the playbook this year because of turnovers. When the playbook is opened the change will surprise teams and people.

As far as the Bowl game debacle against LSU….CPJ let the game be a reward for the players this year….That mistake will not happen again. And all the dawg fans out there think about this…..

1-If we(Tech fans) are right and Ugag fans are wrong then what kind of carnage will every fall bring to Athens and over half the state after losing to UF and GT every year.

2-If we are wrong and you are right….will you still hang your hat on being in the best conference because UF beat you yet again and won another NC!!

3-If Paul Oliver was so good and a shutdown corner then why isn’t he a household name or better yet why wasn’t he drafted ahead of Calvin(they did enter the NFL at the same time.

4-Keep your Top 10 recruiting class every year and be pre-season #1 only to get beat every year and use the excuse that the SEC is the best conference….but remember that Ugag has not won a NC in 29+ years.

5-And Tech leads in NC trophies….Holds the longest winning steak…..The largest margin of victory….and won the last NC in 1990, 10 years after your last and that is indisputable.

Have a good day and THWG!!!!!

From Tom Osbourne’s first season (1973) to Nebraska’s last year running the option (2003), they had 8 WRs taken in the NFL Draft while Ugag, who gets high profile WR recruits every year, has only had 6 drafted out of their pseudo-pro-style offense from 1973 to present. GT has also had 8 WRs drafted since 1973.

In 1984, the #1 pick in the NFL draft was Irving Fryar a WR from Nebraska playing in a triple option system. Fryar is one of only 2 WRs drafted #1 since 1980.

Calvin Johnson was the #2 pick in 2007.

Ugag has never had a WR drafted higher than 13th.

Don’t let reality get in the way of your perception….

Plus, how many times did Nebraska or GT fans take out billboards making fun of their WRs? never.

    U[sic]GA? Twice.

what dumbar$e “UGA a graveyard” is too stupid to realize is that 40 years ago the NFL was running the same style of offense as Osbourne. So naturally they’d recruit receivers that are used to blocking 95% of the game.

Times have changed, except for the fact Yech still sucks at football and can’t even win their own pathetic conference outright, Lol!!

Yeah, a lot of good Calvin did for you guys. Having Ball as your qb keeps a receiver healthy since you NEVER get catchable balls thrown your direction. Lol!!!!

Jacksondog, win a bowl game?? do you not know that tech has a better bowl winning percentage than ugay in both school’s history?? GT is the ncaa record holder for most points scored in a game, 4 coaches in the ncaa hall of fame, and a guy named john heisman who coached at tech, has a little trophy named after him! What achievements in assthens can ugay claim to in the ncaa hall of fame, or the ncaa record books? none!! But, the most important thing that history points to, is that all teams play on saturdays to win national championships. History says 4 and ugay 1!! You also have the longest losing streak at 8 games thanks to a guy in the hall of fame named bobby dodd!! You leghumpers talk about championships like you know something about them?? You were paper preseason champs this year and look at what happened! overrated!! As always in assthens. We won in 1990, you won your only nc in 1980. We have 3 others sitting in the glass case to prove that ugay does not measure up with georgia tech in the existence of both schools and history! And ugay is more superior? Put down the crack pipe in assthens and look at facts! Just look at the national championships! suck on that rednecks, tired of the 7 games before we lost garbage. What about your 8 game losing streak!! Do you know that GT has even more sec conference titles than ugay when both were in the same conference! make some sense when you post, rednecks. Championships, please! when you leghumpers get to 4 national championships, get off the longest losing streak in the series at 8, land a better job than a tech grad, then you can run your di**suckers!! Don’t forget 45-42 on the homefield of the paper champs!! see you jokes for your beatdown in atlants next year. we all know its coming, 19 of the kids that just handed it to you, can’t wait to return in 09 and give you some more! Has your hedges grown back up there yet, you bunch of crybabies? I’m sure you jokes can find something better to cry about, other than some bush! Good grief. Goooooo Jackets!

Phaggot fans are so easy to raddle. They pretend the only thing that matters RIGHT NOW is that Tech won by a mighty 3 points for the first time in 8 years. And in the same breath they like to bring up ancient history that occured long before even their parents were born. What’s hilarious is that they preach NOW that the head-to-head count is all that matters since they won this past season, yet they never feel the need to bring up the ALL-TIME series record.

So pathetic but oh so funny!!!

Well, it appears you can’t read mr pi** on yourself! Your lame fans talk about being superior as above if you bother to read, have talked about the HISTORY, and you have the series, i will take the national championships since thats what playing on saturday’s is all about you jokea! your best comeback is that it was long ago? what more facts do you need than 8 straight losses to Tech, 4 national titles to your 1, and move forward to present day… 45-42!! I guess you lose both ways then moron! Then, you leghumpers say, “oh, what about the 7 games before”? Well, you guys own the longest streak of getting waxed, so i wouldn’t bring up any streaks ugay pi guy! you ugay fans are what is funny. And, of course the ring. What about you rednecks thinking so little of your sugar bowl rings, as to put them on ebay to sell?? WTF IS THAT? Just goes to show what true appreciation ugay players have for their football program. I guess pawning your rings for some beer, strippers, jerry springer re-runs, and if anything left over, a little toward your rent in those doublewide trailors in assthens!! I love how you ugay fans refuse to understand, that your the 2nd best team in the state this year, and a second tier program in the existence of both schools! just look it up, your achievements don’t measure up. Tech will always be a better place to get an education from, always have more championships than you, and continue to employ you losers in the workplace! vegas has Tech grads, as a 20-1 favorite, over ugay grads head to head! So you want to talk present, beat you in hoops, 45-42 on your own field and had to listen to your whining about your hedges, and our baseball team is loaded this season! I’m gonna get my broom out and ready, i believe a sweep is looming in the near future! What have we learned today? Ugay education compared to a tech education, = garbage! Ugay football in the past and present = OVERRATED, AND UNDERACHIEVEMENT sum it up best! Players like stephen hill, should want to enrich their lives with a GT degree, as he will go farther in life with it, than a masters at ugay in ring pawning, or in corrections facility management! Don’t be mad mutt nation, because we beat you 45-42, have more national titles than you, a better school to get an education from, and will complete a sweep in the 3 sports that matter! Hey, you guys still have gymnastics. right? Ugay fans are among the worst in college football! Every year, your gonna win it all, and then you have a book of excuses for each loss! It’s never that the better team beat you on the field. I just try to come to the understanding, that most of you are just retarded! Reading your blogs is evidence of that!

Mike, uga is not recognized by the ncaa as being national champions that year. Here is some info for you. Ohio state was crowned AP champion by the ncaa and there was no second poll that the ncaa awards national champions. In your mind you may be, but not official by the ncaa!! Below is the 3 schools that claimed to win the title, but only ohio state was awarded the ap, which the ncaa recognized! paul brown, the ohio state coach, was coach of the year as well. Looks like your misinformed. 45-42 a fluke, huh? I guess every one of those 420 yards rushing, was a fluke on that stellar ugay defense that had 38 points or more, hung on it 5 times last year? I’m sure you guys losing to florida 17 of the last 20 times is a fluke also. Mike, i bet you are the motherload when it comes to excuses dude! YOU HAVE 1 TITLE THERE CHIEF, NOT 2. Just the facts!!!! 5 publications awarded ohio state the crown. The ncaa has ohio state as the 1942 AP National champions. You can’t lay claim to what the ncaa has given to Ohio State mike. Leave it to a ugay fan to be misinformed or try to steal another team’s glory!
