WR Cameron Kenney picks Oklahoma over Georgia
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Dacula native Cameron Kenney committed to Oklahoma over Georgia on Sunday night.
The wide receiver took a recruiting trip to UGA this weekend and pondered his college choice during his three-hour plane flight back to Kansas, deciding on Oklahoma. Kenney plays at Garden City Junior College.
“The official visit to [UGA] went great, it was better than I could ever imagine,” Kenney told the AJC. “However, I just couldn’t pass on the opportunity to play with the Heisman Trophy winner [Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford] and, more importantly, for the team many pick to win the national championship next year.”
In other UGA recruiting news, Miller Grove wide receiver Stephen Hill was offered by the Bulldogs on Saturday night. Hill is committed to Georgia Tech.
Back to Kenney: He had nothing but praise for Georgia. “They have everything … great players and great coaches. They will be all right without me. Mark Richt, he’s a great man. There was a reason he came into my life … maybe not to be my college coach. [but] maybe to inspire me to be a better person in all aspects of my life.”
Kenney admitted the quarterback situation at both schools played a role in his decision. “Sam Bradford won the Heisman. He turned down the NFL to compete for a national championship again at Oklahoma. There will be a ton of NFL scouts looking at him next year. They need some impact players at wide receivers, and think I can be one of them. What wide receiver wouldn’t want to be part of all that?”
“It looks like Joe Cox is going to be the guy at Georgia next year. I’ve heard a lot of great things about him. But I’ve only got two years of college left. If I was a freshman, my thought process about all of this might be different. I probably would’ve picked Georgia. But I’ve only got two years of college left, and I just couldn’t turn down the chance to play with the Heisman Trophy winner. He’s a proven quarterback, one of the best to ever play college football.”

Can’t blame a JUCO kid with just two years of eligibility left for wanting to go play in a wide open attack at OU with the Heisman Trophy winner throwing to him. If Matthew Stafford would have came back to UGA, Kenney would be a Dawg.
Good luck to Cameron, he handled the entire thing with class.

Although I am a Bulldogs fan, from a completely objective point of view, I’d say Kenney made the right choice. From a completely subjective point of view, Lenny should jump off a bridge.

michael, thanks for the updates. with all-star college senior games finished, these recruiting updates are the only thing keeping me sane. with kenney chosing ou, where does that put uga with the number of scholarship offers remaining, and does this increase uga’s likelihood of getting marlon?

Hope it works out for you, but what about your Senior year? You’ll then be without a QB. Unless you plan to shock the world in a “one and done” situation at OU, is it better to have uncertainty in your Jr or Sr year? Post football…lot’s of businesses are based in Atanta, how many in Norman? Hmmmmmmmmm Hope it all works out.

Based on what Kenney said, and as a person personally, I guess the maybe of a championship is more important than who you surround yourself with for 2 years:
Kenney had nothing but praise for Georgia. “They have everything … great players and great coaches. They will be all right without me. Mark Richt, he’s a great man. There was a reason he came into my life … maybe not to be my college coach. [but] maybe to inspire me to be a better person in all aspects of my life.”

Cameron, we would have loved to have had you play for the dawgs and for your local fans. You know all of those things, your family wanted you here, but you did what was best for your career. You did it with class and no one can blame you. It was probably the best choice on paper but there is nothing better than being a bulldawg and playing in the SEC. You are already a star! Hope you have a great career, you sound like a fine young man. We would have been so lucky to have you. A fine athlete and good character!

Only thing he might consider is that Oklahoma is replacing four lineman.
But I hope he has a fine two years at Oklahoma and a real shot at the pro’s.

I bet Michael Bowman would still love to come to UGA. He committed to Bama but his heart is that of a Georgian. Hopefully it went well with Charles on his visit to UGA. All seem to understand Kenny’s choice but it really surprises me that it is all based upon a player that could get hurt and not even play for all of the season next year. Then he will be on a team with a QB with no experience at all. They don’t serve grits or sweet tea in Okla either. Hope it works out for him.

Kenny, Remember Ohio State and Oklahoma always lose in New Year bowl games. There is no way the voters let those 2 schools in a national championship game against the SEC anytime soon. It will be aleast 2 years before the voters biases fade on Oklahoma. Your eligiability will be up.

And Mr. Kenny will be playing a lot next year during Bradford’s last year???? Doubt it! So when he finally gets to play a lot who will be the QB at OU??? With the exit of Mo Mas Kenny would have played a lot of reps with Georgia next year and Joe Cox is not a bad QB. Georgia will have a good freshman slinging the ball in 2010 also. Maybe Mr. Kenny is not looking into his future far enough.
Wish him well and maybe he will be on the field a lot next Year. Not sure it will work out that way.

Charles gives Georgia high marks
Michael Langston FlaVarsity.com
It’s been a busy month for Tampa Plant’s Orson Charles. The talented receiver previously took trips to Florida and Florida State. But this weekend, it was the Georgia Bulldogs chance to impress Charles. It appears the visit was mission accomplished with the 6-foot-2, 218 pound standout having high praise for his visit to Athens.
I BELIEVE THESE COMMENTS ARE SYNONOMOUS FOR UGA IS A GREAT SECOND OPTION, I LOVE THE DAWGS AND MY UGA DEGREE..I DON’T KNOW WHY UGA SEEMS TO BE A SECOND OPTION.

He’s making a big mistake—-OU’s loaded at WR and this guy may not even play much. At UGA, he would start right away and get a lot of touches to get ready for the nfl. UGA will be OK—-there are a lot better players available than him.

All you Tech fans that keep blathering about 45-42, I have one thing to say. Act like you’ve been there. Y’all have lost soooo many times over the last twenty years. Give it up. Great, 45-42, you guys make it sound like you won 45-0. Congrats, but please, act a little more mature. Think of how bad it will be rubbed in your faces when we win again. And don’t tell me that it won’t happen again. Y’all are supposed to be great at math and math is on our side the last twenty plus years…..

DAWGSRULE, Hate to disagree with a fellow Dawg lover, but this kid wasn’t going to come in here and “be the man”, besides A.J. Green, we still have Michael Moore,Kris Durham, and Tavares King, whom some seem to forget was the sixth best reciever coming out last year. This kid saw an opportunity to step in and get alot more touches in a conference, and school that airs it out, and he took advantage of it.Lets wish the kid the best, but don’t for one minute, think that we will be without good players.UGA fans remember we may be the only team in college, that has three tailbacks in the nfl, that came out the same time. What we need to do, is turn our attention to Michael Bowman, at 6’5 205, he looks physically ready, and a kid thats in rivals top 50, espn’s top 100, and wants to come to UGA, why are we not standing on this kids door with Sonnie Perdue. One last little note, Cameron show me one QB IN THE LAST TEN YEARS FROM OU IN THE NFL,not doing great, just in the NFL.Something to think about isn’t it!One receiver in the playoffs from OU, two in the AFC/NFC from UGA.Pick wisely kid they like UF, make good college players, we get you to the NFL.

I am not gonna come on here and bicker with anyone, but I just thought I might make a few corrections to some of the comments I have read.
1) OU is screwed at QB after Bradford. This is not true. We have a young man by the name of Landry Jones who will be a redshirt Sophmore during Kenneys senior year. Landry was a 4-star recruit who was an Elite 11 QB. He passed for 3,800 yards and 44 TDs as a senior, as well as adding 11 on the ground. Now I am not saying he is going to be a sure thing, but what I am saying is he has just as big of a shot as succeeding as Logan Gray who would be a redshirt Jr, or Mettenberger or Murray who would both be Redshirt Fr if I am correct.
So really it is Bradford over Cox, and then a wash after that.
2) OU is not loaded at WR. We just graduated 3 SR starters who accounted for 41% of our receptions this season and 48% of our yards. In fact, after factoring out RBs and TEs, our returning WRs only accounted for 19% of the seasons receptions and 18% of the receiving yards. The majority of that coming from redshirt freshman Ryan Broyles.
We have 6 scholarship WRs returning next season, with only 1 proven starter and a couple of guys with a bit of experience. Keep in mind that we had 4 WRs go for 500+ yards this season. (1150, 714, 687, 504) Like I said 3 of those numbers graduate, so there is PLENTY of opportunity for Mr. Kenney to come in and compete right away.
I am very excited about his commitment, and I appreciate the many classy Georgia fans who see what kind of opportunity he has at Oklahoma. I am a big fan of your program and a big fan of Coach Richt.

Way to go kid, you made a good decision for yourself, and you should hope that it will prove out for you.
UGA will be good at WR, and we have the best returning WR in the country. OU had none, really, just a great offense, QB, and tight end.
As far as you Tech folks, get a life! Maybe I should go to the Tech sites, but I really don’t have any desire to do so. I too wish the Techsters the best in recruiting. Keep checking back with our site though, you may see some real players names and bio’s.

that commented on Tech fans acting like 45-42 was 45-0.
How would you say GA fans have reacted to the 7-game win streak by the dogs … kinda like they won them ALL by scores similar to 45-0????????
Coaching goes a loooooong way at this level son. And Paul Johnson is one helluva coach. I’m mean, just look at what he was able to “inspire” his young men to do on 11/29/08! A team of loaded with UNDERCLASSMEN, trailing by 16 with 30 minutes to play, playing ON THE ROAD, against a team with FAR SUPERIOR talent, in pretty HORRIBLE weather conditions, and he somehow get his INFERIOR players, running a HIGH SCHOOL offense to prevail!!???!!!
I’m mean GA fans can rant-and-rave all they want about 1 out of 8, and the blind squirrel finds a nut, and wait till next year when the dogs beat tech’s arse, and our D-coordinator was horrible, and we had sooooo many injuries (why don’t you delve into just how many injuries the jackets had to deal with this season), and blah, blah, blah, blah.
Chan Gailey was, and still is, a JOKE of a head coach, ya see, and MR. PAUL JOHNSON is sort of a genius when it comes to calling a game, and getting THE MOST out of his players whether they are 2-3 star atheletes or service academny students who also like to play football!
Face it doggies ….. the Jackets will be GA’s most frustrating opponent as long as Paul Johnson is their head coach!

If the offensive line stays healthy and we can get King and Samuel to learn how to block we will be fine.Samuel will be great with proper coaching. He’s big, fast and strong. What we need folks is a defense.Spring practice will show us a lot about that.If we take care of one game at a time,we may pull a big “upset” on the lizards. I live in Loganville and living in Loganville has almost made me cheer against UGA because of their delusional fans. You guys are criticizing a kid for choosing another school besides Georgia. Wow, I thought it was his decision not yours. You do not care about that kid, you only care if he comes to UGA, get a grip, no better yet, get a freakin life!
You wanna talk about WR and QB’s from OU and UGA. What QB is in the league playing from UGA. Is David Greene still in the league? What about receivers? You have Hines Ward who is a mans man at receiver. Who are the other receiver from UGA? I thought so, stop talking as if you have this dynasty and a top 5 program. NEWSFLASH, you don’t!!! You even went as far as to hang your hat on the fact that you have 3 guys from the same year in the league. Those are 3 very mediocre running backs at best. Oklahoma lost their top 3 receivers, he should be able to step right in and contribute. He will have a Heisman QB throwing passes to him and 2 running backs that ran for over 1,000 yard running the ball, not to mention an All American TE. None of us know how next year will pan out, but show some class, however hard that may be.
Oh yeah and last but not least, how can you complain about Ohio State and OU losing championship games when you guys are constantly playing in the Peach Bowls, Gator Bowls and whatever else insignificant bowls. 1 National title over 25 years ago, what have you guys done lately. Hey Dude, Remember 45-35? Texas has owned OU recently. A waste of your talent going to OU because they can’t win the big game(s). If you’re going to play in the Big 12 then the University of Texas is the place to play. You would likely have to get in line for a receiver position but it would be worth it. Recall that no Big 12 school wanted Stafford when he came out of Highland Park HS (metro Dallas) so he had to settle for Georgia.

Are some of you nuts? Mr.Kenney has placed his future in the hands of a QB who will lose the protection afforded him in a loss to FU so he will be less protected with 4 linesmen gone and will be more susceptible to hits and injury this year. Who is his backup? If Cox gets injured, Logan Gray is talented and getting great experience on the field. Our Freshmen backups are good enough for any of the Little-12 teams and one was the best QB at an encampment for the best 10 QBs in the country. The kid going to USC was second and repetitively the media ranks Barkley as the best in the nation. They (the media) skipped that confrontation in Ca and don’t report it now, although at the time they did. Going to Ok sounds stupid when you look at it from a WR’s pt of view who has only 2yrs left and one with a QB that would get plastered in the SEC and would’nt have such a great record. He throws “dinks” over the middle, hardly the fare for a newcomer to learn the system and will not get big tosses that will attract NFL scouts. This is a bonehead decision for his career. Other WRs don’t have these circumstances since they have 4yrs and can chose the best school for their college career. And that be UGA! We have receivers already who can take the pressure off Green. UGA should be viewed as a Mecca for young WRs fot the next 3 yrs.
This kid made a dumb decision for himself. It will not hurt the Dawgs because there is less competition for those not yet committed and they can look at a few yrs to show their talent with less “if”s for the future. Sorry, Kenney. Good luck fella.
Does anyone know another team loaded with great QBs like UGA? Now don’t send some stupid list of preferences. Tell us why other QBs are better than the 4 at Georgia with encampment selection among their peers. Zach Mettenberger also was selected among SEC QBs as being the best at the Alabama encampment for QBs. Let’s hear from you.
UgaVII- Get your wrinkly face off the floor! Use a spatula! Spring Game is coming and you have to get in shape. HUP,TWOO,TREE,FO! HUP,TWOO,TREE,FO!

BoomerStumblebutt- Stafford committed very early and still had 50+ offers. Texas didn’t get a shot at him.

Georgia Sooner,
what do you expect, you live in Georgia. That is like me wishing OU loses every game. Not everyone, just against Texas and their bowl game..But, I can see how dawg fans annoy you, as sooner fans annoy me. We’ve won just as many BCS games as OU has since 2000…so don’t act like we never get there…
As for Kenney, good for him, but to say that most are picking ou to win it all is ridiculous. everyone is still on the florida bandwagon and picking them to go wire to wire..Personally I think it’s going to be
UF vs Texas for it all..Hook em and Go Dawgs!

Stumblebutt-When the Natl Champ Bulldog Tennis Team was in D.C. and met with the President 3yrs ago, he mentioned in small talk that he understood that the Dawgs Football team had “stolen” the best QB in the country from Texas. He was more informed than you are about football in your home state.

IMO, the sooner teams that went on to the NC game were not as good as advertised hence the loses. It’s a fair bet that the UGA teams playing in a much tougher conference were just as good…I would love to play OU..I can’t wait to meet them on the gridiron one day soon I hope!
