Blessed Trinity RB quickly accepts Georgia State offer

Most recruits wonder if they’ll red-shirt their freshman season. Running back Sam Burkhalter is guaranteed to.

Burkhalter committed Sunday to Georgia State, which will begin play in 2010. The entire team will only practice and scrimmage in ‘09. The Panthers will play in Div. I-AA in the Colonial Athletic Association.

“There are kids who committed [to Georgia State], but had opportunities to play at Clemson and other big places. This team’s filled with big-time athletes,” Burkhalter said. “It’s good to go to a place you can play at right away, instead of having to wait your turn in line and probably not get out there much until your junior season.”

Burkhalter, who rushed for 1,662 yards and 19 touchdowns for Blessed Trinity (7-3) as a senior, was impressed with Georgia State’s legendary coach, Bill Curry. Curry spent 17 years coaching at Georgia Tech, Alabama and Kentucky.

When recruits were preparing to leave their official visits to Georgia State on Sunday, Curry called Burkhalter to his office and offered him the scholarship. Burkhalter accepted, nixing his scheduled visit to Marist.

“It was a place I always wanted to go to, so I committed right on the spot,” Burkhalter said.

Um, did I miss an announcement or something?

Crimson isn’t even a Ga State color. Sounds like someone had Alabama on their mind.

Regardless, awesome to hear about all of the committments we’re getting!

Yes Crimson Panthers, they changed their name after you went to bed last night. I on the other hand stayed up and went to the press conference at 3:30 am. Not many folks showed. Just me and ajc writer Mike Alpert. There was talk afterwardes that they will change the name again in 2010 to “Crimson and Clover” Panthers. The artist rendering showed a Red and Green panther with the traditional Blue tail. Very Nice.
