Carver DB Darren Myles packing bags for Tennessee

Darren Myles Jr., one of the state’s top uncommitted prospects, has an official visit scheduled for Tennesee this weekend, his father and coach said.

However, the 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior has a couple of meetings on Thursday.

“We are meeting with [Tennessee defensive coordinator] Monte Kiffin in the morning, and then LSU’s new defensive backs coach Ron Cooper in the afternoon,” Darren Myles Sr. said.

Kiffin followed his son, Lane Kiffin, to Tennessee from Tampa Bay, where he helped the Bucs win the Super Bowl his second year as defensive coordinator.

Myles has already taken visits to LSU, Alabama and Purdue, his father’s alma mater. It is rumored to be an all-out battle between LSU and Alabama for Myles, but he said he has no favorites.

Myles said he will wait until signing day to make a decision but told the AJC that he is no longer considering Georgia Tech.

“I don’t want to be that close to home,” he said earlier. “I want to see what other schools have to offer.”

Last month, Myles said he removed UGA from his list of finalists because he hadn’t heard from the Bulldogs for weeks.

Reunion for QB Aaron Murray and TE Orson Charles at UGA

Orson Charles, one of the nation’s top prospects at tight end, said his former high school teammate, quarterback Aaron Murray, has eased up the recruiting pressure.

Charles will be taking an official visit to Georgia this weekend. Murray graduated early and enrolled at UGA earlier this month. The two helped Tampa’s Plant High win Florida’s Class AAA championship last month.

“I bet there wasn’t a single day during football season that Aaron didn’t bring up Georgia with me,” Charles said with a laugh. “He knows … I know very well that he would love it if we played together again in college.”

Charles said Murray’s recruiting pitch softened after the championship game. “We’re good friends, and now he just wants me to do whatever is best for me. He told me ‘Orson, I’m going to be your No. 1 fan, wherever you go to college.’”

Charles said it has been “kind of quiet” since Murray left town, and that he missed hanging out together and watching football games. Charles is considering Florida, UGA, FSU, Tennessee and Southern Cal.

Westlake LB not so interested in SEC, ACC offers

Westlake linebacker Dearco Nolan wants to become a commercial airline pilot. He says Middle Tennessee, where he took an official visit last weekend, has a highly rated professional pilot program.

“If I’m going to go to school for free [with a scholarship] I should study what I’m interested in,” he said. “Educationally, everything’s there for me at Middle Tennessee State.”

Nolan’s final decision may hinge on an upcoming official visit to Marshall on Jan. 30.

Nolan, who decommitted on an offer from North Carolina earlier this month, isn’t so sure about offers from Ole Miss and Iowa State. Mississippi already has four offers to pass rushers, and his interest to go there has dwindled. Iowa State, which had been among the leaders, hasn’t called recently after recruiting him hard for the past year.

Nolan said he hasn’t talked to anyone from Iowa State since speaking with defensive line coach Terry Price, who since has left that program to take the same job at Mississippi. Price coached under Tommy Tuberville at Auburn, then left for Iowa State after Tuberville was forced out.

“Iowa State is a question mark right now,” Nolan said.

But Nolan has a good feeling about Middle Tennessee State and says he doesn’t care about the size of the program he joins.

“I’ve got big offers. That’s not a problem,” he said. “It’s not all about football. If you’re good enough [for the pros] they’re going to find you. It’s about getting an education. You can’t play football forever. You’ve got to look past football and look down the road. Like my uncle said, ‘Don’t let the college use you. You use it.’”

A 6-foot-3, 225-pounder, Nolan had 11 sacks last season for Westlake.

New Jersey OL has Georgia Tech among four finalists

Fresh off a weekend visit to Virginia, Nolan MacMillan, a 6-foot-6, 285-pound offensive lineman for The Hun School in Princeton, N.J., will take his final official on Friday when he travels to Boston College.

“I wouldn’t say I have a front-runner, but things are starting to work themselves out in my mind,” said MacMillan, who confirmed that his finalists are Boston College, Georgia Tech, Iowa and Virginia.

Georgia Tech slot backs coach Jeff Monken and co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer are actively recruiting MacMillan.

“I actually saw coach Monken at The Hun School on Monday,” MacMillan said. “I speak to him and coach Spencer regularly.

“I have a good relationship with coach Monken.”

LaFayette OL switches to Ole Miss, but Central Florida not giving up

Central Florida coaches visited LaFayette High to try to convince center Evan Swindall to switch back to the Knights.

The 6-foot-3, 289-pound Swindall committed to Central Florida, but switched his decision to Ole Miss after an official visit.

“As a father, Ole Miss coach [Houston] Nutt really made me believe, as a daddy himself, that he was going to help him do the things he wants to do - graduate, play at the hightest level and enjoy the college years,” said Perry Swindall, Evan’s coach and father. “It was the total package.”

Swindall said the meeting with UCF coaches was cordial. “They understood,” he said. “UCF has a great program, and Evan knows that. They just said if something changes to give them a call.”

Swindall said Auburn also offered Evan and invited him to make an official visit the same weekend his Ole Miss visit was scheduled.

“Nothing against Auburn, but he is not really an Auburn fan,” his dad said. “He grew up in Northwest Alabama, and Ole Miss was always pretty active in that area.”

Swindall also had offers from Middle Tennessee and South Florida. He said Tennessee also showed an interest, but never offered.

“His first goal was to play college football, but he always wanted to play in the SEC,” Swindall said.

Recruiting roundup on junior college prospects

Here are updates on five former high school standouts from Georgia who attended junior colleges:

Defensive end Derek Slaughter of Mt. Zion and safety Hiram Atwater of Southwest Dekalb are both bound for Alabama-Birmingham. Slaughter matriculated at Coffee County (Kan.) Community College, while Atwater was at Garden City (Kan.).

Defensive end Jonathan Massaquoi of Central Gwinnett signed again with Troy after making honorable mention All-American at Butler County (Kan.) while offensive tackle James Carpenter of Hephzibah has enrolled at Alabama.

Meanwhile, former Norcross standout Tyrece Gaines appears headed to either Oregon or Arkansas. Gaines was second-team All-American as a wide receiver this past season at El Dorado (Kan.).

North Cobb’s Mack may wait until after signing day

Although he would love to join all the pomp and circumstance of committing to a school on National Signing Day, North Cobb receiver Rico Mack said he may wait until after Feb. 4 to make his decision.

“I want to take it slow and make sure that the school I choose is the best fit for me,” Mack said. “I know there is life after football. I want to get my degree in business management in three years and then get my masters.”

Mack, who wants to start his own construction or landscaping business, said he plans to visit Valdosta State on Jan. 30.

He has offers from Bowling Green and Middle Tennessee, along with Charleston Southern, Elon, Furman and Western Carolina. Mack visited Charleston Southern during the weekend, and has several family members who live just minutes from the campus in Charleston.

Douglass RB Patrick not ready to commit to Navy just yet

Douglass running back Michael Patrick said he probably will commit to Navy. But he’s not ready to do so just yet.

Patrick said he’s waiting to see if he gets any other offers, and he got a call from The Citadel last week.

“I’ve also e-mailed a couple of coaches from some other schools,” said Patrick, who said he believes his size has prevented more schools from recruiting him. The 5-foot-9, 185 pounder said he will continue to work on his speed and agility while waiting for track season to begin later next month.

Patrick said he plans to visit Navy on Feb. 7.

Mt. Zion-Jonesboro WR will visit Georgia Southern

Mt. Zion-Jonesboro wide receiver Drexel Copeland returned from an official to Youngtown State in Ohio this weekend.

“They offered, but I didn’t commit,” the 6-foot-1, 185-pound senior said. “I am waiting until signing day [Feb. 4] to make my decision.”

Copeland said his next official visit is Georgia Southern scheduled for Jan. 30.

Perry WR Trey Smith likes school with NFL pedigree

Trey Smith, a 6-foot-5, 205-pound receiver from Perry, has his list of college suitors narrowed down to two, he said earlier this week.

Smith said he’ll likely accept a scholarship from either Western Michigan or Ball State, a decision he’ll make after his final official visit on Jan. 30 at Ball State.

“It’s going to be a close call,” he said. “They’re pretty close. Both said I could play early, both went to a bowl game.”

A recent official visit to Western Michigan was pretty impressive, he said. The Broncos’ top receiver is graduating, and “they’re going to need some receiving help,” he said. Western also has an NFL pedigree with WR Greg Jennings (Green Bay Packers) and TE Tony Scheffler (Denver Broncos) among its alumni. “That makes a big difference.”

Smith likes Ball State’s recent football success and its pass-happy offensive philosophy, but he admits he still has a lot to learn about the school. That’s the reason he may wait until signing day on Feb. 4 before announcing a decision.

Smith caught 38 passes for 450 yards and five touchdowns last year at Perry.
