M.L. King’s Joel Kight eliminates Tech after Auburn offer
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
The recruitment of M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight took an unexpected turn on Tuesday when he eliminated Georgia Tech from consideration after picking up a scholarship offer from Auburn.
“[Auburn] coach [Gene] Chizik called with the offer,” M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis told the AJC. “It really didn’t shock me because I had heard some speculation last week. But I didn’t want to say anything until it became official.”
Kight met with Tech linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary on Tuesday. Jarvis disputed the persistent chatter that the Jackets’ offer to Kight had expired.
“Georgia Tech didn’t pull the offer,” Jarvis said. “In fact, coach B.J. came to the school [on Tuesday] and Joel told him that, with Auburn offering, he’s cutting it down to Auburn, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.
“Joel is scheduled to visit Auburn this weekend.”
Jarvis said Kight’s desire to play defense in college contributed to his decision to eliminate Tech from consideration.
“I think it was more of the idea of him playing running back [at Tech],” Jarvis said. “Auburn is interested in him at linebacker, or possibly safety.
“And I think he didn’t want to stay in Atlanta. I think he wants to be close to home, but just not that close.”

Before Tech beat Au two times, how many times did Au beat Tech in a row? Almost too many to count! Your the team that thought they were too good for the sec, left, and then begged back in. Auburn was one of only two schools to vote you back, so thanks for the support in return.

You’re missing the point here GT student. The point of recruiting is to bring in guys that not only provide depth today but will replace the frontliners of today. Several more years like this one recruit wise and when Chan’s guys leave the cupboard will be pretty close to bare at a number of positions. And frankly I’m really concerned about the decline of our defensive play. PJ has never been noted for defense and the way our offensive skill recruiting is going another year or 2 and we could be in trouble. PJ could ultimately be a flash in the pan.

“But…but…Joel, we beat UGA by THREE points!?!?!?!”
LOL!!! Yech recruiting! The gift that keeps on giving. Wow, looks like the Savior is having a typical pathetic Yech recruiting class as usual. I wonder if it was the humiliating bowl beatdown to a 5 loss SEC team just two miles away from campus that ran him off? Or maybe it was the infamous NON-Championship CrackerJack rings that turned him off? Or maybe it’s the fact Yech has to bribe their own base with free cokes, hot dogs and kissing booths with actual GIRLS in them just to make them attend games? LOL, take your pick!!! I love Yech misery!!!

It’s real simple. The guy goes to Auburn he becomes a well rounded RB. That includes pass blocking techniques, picking up blitzes, being involved in a passing game, and playing in an offense that prepares him for the next level. You don’t get that in PJ’s offense. That offense is eventually going to be a drag on Tech’s program. It already is with recruits and that’s obvious.

PJ has never ever had to recruit the type of players it takes to compete in the BCS conferences. At Georgia Southern he basically had players that were not coveted at the D1 level. At the Naval Academy his roster was full of guys that knew the day they walked into the place that the NFL was not an option. Recruits that are gifted enough to be sought after by D1 BCS conference schools all have the thought in mind that they can go to the next level. And with enough talent, proper coaching, and NFL compatible systems, alot of them ultimately get a shot. PJ has never had to deal with this issue before. Now he does. In the past all he had to do was beat inferior competition with his beloved offense. No defense required, no obligation or pressure to create complete football players. PJ’s entire football coaching experience has been nothing more than a selfish ego stoke. What PJ will eventually prove is that no, his offense will not be able to compete with the big boys over the long haul because he’s not going to have the athletes that it takes to do it. He’s doing it now with Gailey’s players. When they’re gone, unless PJ can figure out recruiting at this level, or shed his ego and come into the 21st century offensively, he will ultimately leave the flats with one massively bruised ego. The complete and total humiliation layed on him by Les Miles will be more common than even Tech fans can stand if PJ doesn’t start recruiting better skill players.

Please Remember that most every, if not all, negative remarks are by the same loser who was rejected by GA Tech and is now a bitter Emory U. student.
Also, any remarks about fan support is misguided. GA Tech has a very large fan base. The difference is that Tech’s fan base is worldwide and spread out. The fan base of schools like Auburn and UGAG is local. This does mean that they sell out their stadium (the local fans can go to the games) but it does not mean that it is “better” or “larger”. Some say that this is because GA Tech graduates get jobs all over while the other schools graduates remain local. IMHO, I think that this is partially the reason, but also there is the academic reputation. Students from around the world come to GA Tech because of academics….. ugay and Auburn not so much.
I have traveled to Argentina, Brazil, and Germany as well as others. When I wear my GA Tech shirt, I regularly get positive comments from the local citizens there that recognize GA Tech Yellowjackets.

You people crack me up.
1) Read the article, the kid said he wants to play defense not offense. Tech wanted him on offense, Auburn for defense, end of story.
2) This class is not done yet and it is still ranked much higher than any of Chan’s classes besides ‘07 with Nesbitt, Dwyer, Jones, Burnett, etc.
3) I am not worried about the defense at all, and CPJ will find guys who want to run this offense and he will make it work, and I’m not just talking about skill positions, the OL is very important and he is already finding “his guys” starting with this class.
4) When was the last time Tech pumped out a bunch of drop back passers to the NFL? Never. No big loss, I’ll take this system over the “pro-style” any day.
5) Just win, and people will come.
6) Nebraska’s dominance in college football running the TO wasn’t that long ago.

It seems like Tech is consistently losing the recruiting battle for local kids. That’s not good if you want to have sustained success. I know recruiting northern kids worked for O’leary but I don’t think you can achieve with that strategy long term in today’s football world. Tech surprised alot of people this year but without blue chip athletes you won’t have long term success because major college programs will make adjustments to stop y’alls system (ala LSU).

Tech is doing just fine thank you.CPJ is getting exactly the kind of players it takes to run his system—smaller ,quicker, smarter linemen(most important in this system).Wide receivers who can BLOCK as well as catch the ball, several duo threat QBs coming in. Also, on defense, some of these DEs coming in will end up as quicker DTs some day.Let him get his program in place b4 criticising.I think the Triple O is perfect for a school like Tech.Over the years, how many times have we had a top 10 recruiting class—not many. Also, look at Wake Forest.Have they ever had a top 10 class?—I doubt it.You have to develope your program to your particular situation. In their hayday Nebraska run the TO quite successfully and so will GT. I think that with the exception of a couple of disapointments, these coaches are getting exactly the kind of athletes they want.

Sunday,
You were caught in a lie, just face facts. And even if they were number 25, 26, 27, heck, even number 5, what does that tell you? According to the lunatic Tech fringe, Tech is worthy of playing in the Super Bowl since they beat UGA by 3. They’re going to avg. 2,000 yards of offense per game beginning next season. They’re going to win the next 15 straight ACC titles. 12 of the next 15 National Titles, etc.
Not to forget, CPJ can walk on water and is the smartest person alive. Funny, I would think he would EASILY have the top class even if half of that was true. All these “student athletes” you people claim Tech only seeks all seem to be going to SEC teams instead. Keep telling yourself lies Sunday. There’s nothing more entertaining than making fun of Tech fans year after year for getting their hopes up only to be humiliated with disappointment.

jb just keep stockpiling those “smaller, quicker” lineman so teams like LSU with bigger, stronger, faster, defensive fronts can blow your offense up before the play even gets started. And then combine that with a bunch of Lucas Cox’s in your backfield. Quite a formula for success, huh moron.

One of the reasons that Tech is rarely ranked higher than 20 or so in recruiting is because of numbers. We can’t recruit 28 kids every year and send 6 to prep school like the SEC does annually. Since recruiting is based on quality AND quantity, we’ll never ever be that high.
Luckily Tech recruits, and student athletes, can figure that out. Just like luckily Tech recruits are smart enough to see through the total BS in the posts here.
As one poster mentioned, Nebraska had a long career running the option AND Nebraska sent a slew of players to the NFL (maybe more than anybody else in their heydey). Certainly Nebraska was known for great defenses and oh my, those defenses practiced on the same field as their option offense did.
Please start coming in with decent facts so we can enjoy football discussion instead hearing the same weak SEC dribble.
And good luck to Mr. Kight.

No one is saying that Tech had a disappointing season. Given what you’re used to you guys won the Super Bowl. I simply called out your lie about their recruiting class ranking. But fictional wins against teams is very pathetic for Tech fans. You didn’t beat the number one team in the nation. You beat an injury riddled team that had 18 season ending losses, not to mention dozens of other injuries that cost playing time for important contributors.
Johnson will never win the ACC. UGA had their worst defense in years, in some categories program history, and you still finished well behind them in the final rankings. Not to mention you can’t handle a 5 loss SEC team playing a true freshman QB in your own backyard. Very dark days for Tech to come.

Don’t hurt yourself on putting UGA above GT on academics. Just some facts to chew on…
US News Ranking of National Universities: * GT #35 - UGA #58 http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/college/national-search/
Note that there are 6 ACC schools inthe Top 50 versue only 2 for the SEC. In fact on the Ivey League has more in the Top 50.
From Collegeboard.com…
GT ACT 27 -31. versus UGA ACT 25 - 29. GT SAT Reading 600 - 690 versus UGA 560 - 660. GT SAT Math 650 - 730 versus UGA 570 - 660.
Also recent article by AJC listed GT academics for Athletes # in the country.
All that being said, UGA has significantly raised their academic standards but they are not the same as at GT.
I will likewise admit that while GT has shown dramatic improvement in football, we are not at the same place as UGA.
Just keep the facts straight. 45-42 one year and counting.

Poor Yech fans reduced to using academic “stats” from such a trustworthy site as collegeboard.com. Funny that all the STUDENT ATHLETES Tech is recruiting are going to SEC schools. Hmm….that’s interesting.
You know you’re in the mud when you’re reduced to talking grades about kids that have no intentions of graduating or doing anything with their degrees. The sad thing is Yech is an engineering school, but 99% of their athletes that ACTUAL graduate, do it with a Liberal Arts degree or so other powder puff major from an ENGINEERING SCHOOL. What’s an Engineering school doing with a Liberal Arts college to begin with? Very pathetic.
Face it tools. Your sports suck across the board. You’re the laughing stock of the BCS conferences in football, and heck, you don’t even carry the torch in hoops anymore thanks to the Big East. Is there anything you are good at besides spin and lies? :) Lol!!!!!

Gentlemen, and dawg fans, Nebraska stopped running the triple option. We only used Nebraska as an example of the most recent BCS team that primarily ran the option to show that your data is flawed in regards to defenses, the NFL, etc. If you can’t figure that out, then you’re probably late for flipping those burgers. Lastly, what is the fascination with LSU? Do Georgie fans seriously feel better when bringing up one of our losses last year as if that makes their loss to Tech disappear or something?

Just another UGAY fan who can’t get facts straight. I’d say 4 teams in the top 10 for basketball carries a torch. But don’t worry SEC treehuggers, Florida is got a pity ranking at 24.
Maybe Moreno and Stafford can play in the UGAY back court.
Oh yea! 45-42. THWG

WROOOONG!!!! Big Easy has passed the ACC by. You losers can’t even compete in the OFF SEASON sports anymore. Why is the ACC even a conference anyway? You only ever dominated in basketball, which is also played by WOMEN. You sockstuffers can’t handle the man’s game so you claimed the girls game and have since been passed by.
Worst BCS conference for a reason. What are you now, 2-9? LOL!!!!!

So wait, is he no longer considered a “student athlete” on the Tech blogs now that he’s decided to go to an SEC school?
