UGA coach Mark Richt has BBQ jokes while visiting Virginia prospect

That Mark Richt, he’s a funny guy.

Jordan Love, the defensive back from the suburbs of Richmond, Va., said Richt’s good-natured personality was one of the reasons he picked UGA.

Love said Richt had him laughing during the in-home visit on Sunday night.

As the story goes, Love’s mother cooked a ton of BBQ ribs, chicken, steak and hamburgers for the dinner visit. UGA assistant Tony Ball happened to mention that he owned a BBQ pit and could alter the flavor of the meat by using specific types of wood.

That was all Richt needed to start teasing Ball. “He asked [Ball], ‘What do you do? Bite into each type of wood before you use it to see what type of flavors you have?’ They kept joking back and forth about it. It was so funny, everybody was laughing.”

Love said the visit lasted around three hours and, after dinner, they chatted while watching the NFL championship games. When Richt left, Love invited over his friends. “My mom cooked too much food, we didn’t come close to finishing it off. But my friends were glad to help me out with that.”

Love committed to UGA over around 20 offers, including Penn State and Florida, last summer.

Jordan Love … welcome to the Bulldawg Nation. I’m glad you see the wonderful side of Coach Mark Richt. He’s more than just a coach. We can’t wait to see you put on Red and Black. Welcome to Georgia. The story lets us know you must have a wonderful mother.

Jordan Love will LOVE being a Dawg. And he’ll do just fine in school at UGA. UGA doesn’t change players grades to keep them eligible like Geogia Tech, which just recently came off NCAA probation for fixing 11 football players grades and 19 athletes overall.

Changes grades? UGA fans making up stories again. We kicked those players out of school because they were ineligible after taking the wrong courses in order to graduate towards their major. Those people were fired and everything was taken care of after we self reported it. Changing grades, that’s funny.

It is hilarious and pathetic at the same time that some folks feel they must compete for the “first” meaningless blog comment. What a sad existence. You must be so devoted to the AJC that you just hit refresh waiting for new articles to come out every few seconds so you can be “first.” Funny and sad.

David, not totally accurate story you’re telling is it? Which players were “kicked out of school”? Who was fired?

The students in question were the star football players and they were allowed to use a D as a counting grade toward their major when other students were not allowed to use a D. It is not technically changing grades, but the net result is identical.

The NCAA cited Tech as having a “non-debatable lack of institutional control”. This is a fact so get off your silly little high horse please.

If everything was so simple, why did the NCAA put Tech on restrictions as to scholarships that Paul Johnson is just now trying to overcome. Just remember, the guys who go to Tech are academically superior to the athletes going to Georgia and other ACC and SEC schools. Let’s quit playing that academic game because many are recruited by UGA and others and their grades are well known…GOT SOME SWAMPLAND YOU NEED TO BUY, ALSO….

Roswell Dad,

Nice sarcasm. There was an article in the AJC a couple of weeks ago that said GT had the highest SAT scores for football players in the entire country. So, it’s no joke, Tech is a hard school and they just can’t recruit anybody. Yes there is some overlap with other schools but there are several blue-chippers they can’t even bother talking to.

“….but there are several blue-chippers they can’t even bother talking to.”

And there are several blue-chippers that could easily qualify at Tech that don’t even bother talking to them. Tech fans have created this myth that they cannot recruit blue-chip talent because blue-chip talent is too dumb to go to their school. Not only is this stereotypical, arrogant, and incredibily demeaning to these young men, its also just flat out not true. For every blue-chipper that could not qualify at Tech there is another that could. They don’t go to Tech because there are other football programs and schools that they like better. Its as simple as that. Please stop making excuses for your historically mediocre football program Tech fans. Thanks.

gratefuldawghead, I may wear my hair short on top and stylishly long in the back, to compliment my fashionable jorts, which I love to wear around my double wide mobile home, but at least I am educated enough to correctly spell “trailer” and have mastered basic English grammar well enough to know that “loss it” is grammatically incorrect, as is “you got to come on”, and that “Red-Neck” is one word spelled “redneck”, you ignorant, backwoods, banjo-playing, sixth grade educated moron. It must eat you up to know that Florida has DOMINATED Georgia for DECADES now and that it is only going to get WORSE, not better for you sorry puppies. Richt can’t beat anyone with equal or better talent and with Meyer firmly entrenched in Gainesville, you will be peeing on yourself for years to come.

BR, WE DON’T CARE ABOUT THOSE WHO DISLIKE US. Jealousy is a dark emotion. You would be much better served by seeking professional help in dealing with it than by wallowing in your self-loathing and feelings of impotence. Gators will never forget your cowardly coach Vince Dooley, who lobbied the SEC to take our SEC title after winning it on the field, the year after Georgia did the EXACT SAME THING. Richt is a hypocrite of the highest order, just like Dooley and we will NEVER tire of spanking your sorry butts. BAD DAWG! Now crawl back to your room or I’ll have to put your outside with the cats. BTW, for your information, most Gators enjoy a good relationship and mutual respect from most other SEC schools, Tennessee being the only exception, but go ahead and think you’re relevant. From preseason #1 to getting DESTROYED by Florida and Georgia Tech. OUCH! Richt is a loser and a hypocrite and we couldn’t be happier that he is your coach. One of these days, I’ll get to watch a plane fly over the Gator Bowl pulling a sign “Gators For Richt”, just like I did years back when Ray Goof was your coach.

Bob,

I never said GT can’t recruit blue-chippers, I just said that there are several blue chippers that GT can’t recruit due to academics. I don’t think that is arrogant at all, it is a fact. As far as your back-handed comment that they don’t want to go to Tech, well that’s just ridiculous, Tech has it’s share. Historically mediocre football program? Well, you should look in the mirror. Other than the last 6 or 7 years Georgia is the definition of mediocre.

To all obnoxious and annoying Florida Fans.

Simply put, your fanbase is the epitome of sorry losers and even sorrier winners. Everyone knows that Florida won the National Championship this year yet you continue your obnoxious rants and don’t realize that you are not wanted on this site. Take a hint and simply stop posting here because all you do is irritate the crap out of actual UGA fans that want information. You may want to stop while you are ahead because like it or not Tebow disappears after next year and Harvin is gone.

Remember that we do own the overall record and this dawg will bite next year. Go Dawgs!!!!!!!

By texigator

January 20, 2009 7:30 PM | Link to this

Yes, Harvin is gone now and all we have coming back is the top trio of Jeff Demps (who ran the fastest 100 meter time in high school HISTORY), Em Moody (PAC Freshman of the Year while he was at Southern Cal) and Chris Rainey (a sub 4.3 speedster unlike anyone the Doggies have on their roster). Yes, Tebow will be gone next year (after putting yet another butt whippin’ on the Poodles in ‘09), but he will be replaced by the Gatorade National Player of the Year in 2007, John Brantley, so we’re pretty happy about that. However, you seem pretty confident for a team that got TRASHED this past year even having a NFL 1st rounder as QB and NoPlay Moreno (when he wasn’t taking himself out of the game) leading the offense. You will be much weaker next year and the Gators will be much stronger. Oooo, imagine THAT! And remember, 49-10 and 16 out of the last 19, baby! Give Richt a LIFETIME CONTRACT, PLEASE!

January 21, 2009 1:12 AM | Link to this

Now, if you want to fall back on ANCIENT HISTORY and count games in the series when Florida only had a club team, go right ahead, but here is much more contemporary stats:

If you count the series in the 2000’s, Florida leads Georgia 7 games to 2. If you go back to the beginning of the ‘90’s, Florida leads 16 games to 3. If you go back to the beginning of the ‘80’s, Florida leads 18 games to 11. If you go back to the 1970’s, Florida leads 21 games to 18. If you go back to the ‘60’s, Florida leads 27 wins to 21. If you go back to the ‘50’s, Florida leads 33 wins to 25. If you go back to the beginning of the 1940’s, Florida leads 35 games to Georgia’s 32. So, in other words, FOR THE LAST SEVENTY YEARS, Florida has owned Georgia. If you want to go back to Pre-World War II historical times, be my guest. I wasn’t even alive then.
