Miami flirts with McEachern TE Terrell Mitchell

McEachern tight end Terrell Mitchell, who has sparked interest from UGA, said he got a call out of the blue from Miami.

“I wasn’t expecting it,” Mitchell said. “They [Miami] had seen my film, they said they liked it a lot, and that they were coming to see me in person.”

The 6-foot-6, 225-pound Mitchell said Miami did not offer, but discussed setting up an official visit. Mitchell is scheduled to take recruiting trips to Michigan this weekend and UGA on Jan. 30.

Could Mitchell commit to Michigan this weekend? “I don’t think so. I’ve just taken one official visit [Kentucky]. I’d like to take at least a couple of more before committing.”

If Miami offered, would Mitchell consider taking it? “Now that would be tempting. I’m not sure. I guess I’d have to call Georgia to see where things stand with them. They [UGA] have been with me all along, so I owe them that.”

Mitchell said he has not been offered by UGA. “I have no idea if Georgia will offer me. They have hinted about it [a scholarship offer] before. But when I talk to [UGA tight ends coach John Lilly], we talk about other things.”

Ringgold QB Fairchild selects Chattanooga

Ringgold quarterback Zac Fairchild grew up attending Chattanooga games with his grandfather. But at 6-foot-5 with a strong arm and suitors like Alabama, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee, it was unlikely that he would suit up for the Moccasins.

But when Fairchild blew out his knee during summer practice the big-time schools backed away. Schools like Chattanooga, Georgia State and Ohio stayed interested. Last week, Fairchild went with the familiar choice, Chattanooga, which is 30 minutes from his home.

“I’m five months out from surgery and I feel really great,” said Fairchild, who is on schedule to rejoin Ringgold’s baseball team as a starting pitcher. “I’m throwing off of the mound and everything feels fine.”

Notre Dame and Ohio State to visit Gainesville juniors

Several high-profile colleges plan to send coaches to Gainesville on Thursday to meet with Red Elephants junior receiver Tai-ler Jones.

Jones, who is scheduled to attend junior days at Notre Dame and Ohio State this weekend, will receive in-school visits from members of the Fighting Irish and Buckeyes’ coaching staffs.

Auburn, North Carolina and South Carolina representatives also plan to spend time on Thursday with the 6-foot, 180-pound receiver.

The Tigers’ new defensive line coach, Tracy Rocker, is expected to discuss scholarship offers with Gainesville senior defensive lineman Josh Jackson.

Jackson, who is coming off official visits to Arkansas and Toledo, had been scheduled to visit Ole Miss on Jan. 30. He will now visit Auburn on the last weekend prior to signing day on Feb. 4.

Jackson, who has been offered by Ole Miss, appears intent on following Rocker to Auburn. Rocker recently departed the Rebels’ program to accept a position on his alma mater’s coaching staff.

Gainesville junior quarterback Blake Sims received visits from South Florida and West Virginia coaches earlier today.

Teammate Xavier Ervin committed to Winston-Salem State.

Walton FB David Paulsen turns down UGA, sticks with Oklahoma State

Walton’s David Paulsen says he is a lifelong Georgia fan and holds UGA coach Mark Richt in the highest regard.

That’s why he carefully worded his comments on deciding to stick with his commitment to Oklahoma State over accepting a delayed Georgia scholarship offer.

“I am not saying ‘no’ to Georgia, but I am saying ‘yes’ to Oklahoma State,” Paulsen said.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Paulsen was scheduled to visit Georgia on Jan. 23 to learn more, but cancelled the recruiting trip. What changed his mind?

“I sat down and talked to my parents, prayed and thought about it for days, and decided what was in the best interests of my family and me at heart … and I landed on Oklahoma State, even though I have the utmost respect for [Richt] and Georgia,” Paulsen said.

“I just don’t think Georgia is what I’m destined to do.”

Paulsen, who will play fullback or defensive end in college, admits he was there for taking by Georgia. He attended several UGA prospects camps and always impressed the coaches. But the best the Bulldogs could offer early was the chance to be a “preferred walk-on.”

Other major colleges began offering football scholarships, with Paulsen taking an official visit to Oklahoma State and committing on Oct. 31.

Meanwhile, Georgia decided in early December that it indeed wanted to sign a fullback this year, and Paulsen was the No. 1 target. Richt made an in-home visit and offered a “grayshirt” scholarship, meaning Paulsen would delay his enrollment until January 2010 to count against the following year’s scholarship numbers.

What if UGA increased the stakes by offering a regular scholarship? Would Paulsen be open to considering the Bulldogs again?

“I think if Georgia had offered me a full scholarship before Nov. 1, it would be a different story … but now I feel right about the [situation] and I feel comfortable,” Paulsen said. “My recruiting journey has come to an end [with Oklahoma State].”

Ironically, UGA and Oklahoma State play each other in next season’s opener.

Without Georgia Tech offer, QB commits to other school

Courtney Dalcourt, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound quarterback for Franklin-Simpson High in Franklin, Ky., committed to Western Kentucky on Tuesday.

He had been considering Georgia Tech, Kentucky and Louisville. Dalcourt, who took an official visit to Tech last month, didn’t receive a scholarship offer from the Jackets.

But he was just behind Dontae Aycock of Chamberlain High in Tampa, Fla., on Tech’s recruiting board.

Aycock will likely commit to Tech and become the third quarterback in the Jackets’ 2009 recruiting class.

“It really does look like [Western Kentucky] is rising and upcoming,” Dalcourt told InsideHilltopperSports. “I feel like I’ll be able to come out and compete in a couple of years and take over and take it farther athletically.

“I just really got along with the coaches really well and felt at home there.”

Banneker LB loses Mississippi State offer, but finds new school

Banneker linebacker Milton Patterson thinks he will commit to South Carolina State this weekend during his official visit.

“I really like the coaches, and they are talking about having me come down and play early,” the 5-foot-11, 230-pound senior said.

Patterson currently has offers from Hampton, Akron, Savannah State, Morgan State and Eastern Carolina.

He had an offer from Mississippi State earlier in the year, but the Bulldogs rescinded his scholarship, telling him they were full at the linebacker position.

“After getting the Mississippi State offer I thought I would have ended up at a bigger program,” he said. “But it didn’t work out. I’m okay with it.”

Milton RB Toney Williams “learning the ropes” at Tennessee

Milton coach Scott Walker said he texts or speaks with Tennessee recruit Toney Williams at least four or five times a week since he began his first semester in Knoxville this month.

Walker commended his player for graduating early in December and beginning college this month. He said Williams often speaks of the challenges typical to freshmen, but likes the daily regimen of running and weight lifting, nightly study hall and classes.

“He’s getting his butt kicked every day, but enjoying it,” Walker said. “He was 229 [pounds], but not any more. He said he’s already lost six pounds.”

“You know, it’s like anything else for a freshman,” Walker said. “Toney’s trying to learn the ropes, where the buildings are - a whole different lifestyle [than high school].”

TE Orson Charles has serious talks with Georgia assistant

How did tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, Fla., spend his MLK holiday?

Most of it was spent with UGA assistant John Lilly, who coaches tight ends for the Bulldogs. They met for around six hours on Monday.

The 6-foot-4 Charles finished up basketball practice at 1 p.m., and then had a “serious” conversation with Lilly. UGA covets Charles, who will be making an official visit to Athens this weekend.

“We talked about my future, some deep stuff,” Charles said. “One of the biggest things he emphasized was separating truth from fiction in recruiting. He just gave me some suggestions for things to look at when making a college decision, and I really can’t go anymore into it than that.”

Charles said his finalists are Florida, Georgia, Florida State, Miami and Southern Cal.

Bannker DB leaning to Louisville over two SEC schools

Banneker defensive back Emmanuel Lartey said he’s leaning toward committing to Louisville, but he’s not ready to make it official.

Lartey, who said his final three schools are Louisville, Mississippi State and Arkansas, said he may wait until signing day to make his decision.

But the favorable impression he had on his official visit to Louisville before Christmas is still pretty fresh. He mentioned that the community support for the school’s athletics programs was impressive.

“I really liked how the city gets behind the team,” said Lartey, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defensive back who runs a 4.5 40. “They have no [major] professional teams so they really follow the college teams.

“Louisville is in the lead.”

He hasn’t taken official visits to Mississippi State or Arkansas, but attended games at both schools.

All three of his final schools want him to play cornerback.

Lartey will make an official visit to South Carolina State this weekend to see what is being offered there, and it may be his final visit before signing day.

UGA coach Mark Richt has BBQ jokes while visiting Virginia prospect

That Mark Richt, he’s a funny guy.

Jordan Love, the defensive back from the suburbs of Richmond, Va., said Richt’s good-natured personality was one of the reasons he picked UGA.

Love said Richt had him laughing during the in-home visit on Sunday night.

As the story goes, Love’s mother cooked a ton of BBQ ribs, chicken, steak and hamburgers for the dinner visit. UGA assistant Tony Ball happened to mention that he owned a BBQ pit and could alter the flavor of the meat by using specific types of wood.

That was all Richt needed to start teasing Ball. “He asked [Ball], ‘What do you do? Bite into each type of wood before you use it to see what type of flavors you have?’ They kept joking back and forth about it. It was so funny, everybody was laughing.”

Love said the visit lasted around three hours and, after dinner, they chatted while watching the NFL championship games. When Richt left, Love invited over his friends. “My mom cooked too much food, we didn’t come close to finishing it off. But my friends were glad to help me out with that.”

Love committed to UGA over around 20 offers, including Penn State and Florida, last summer.

Georgia Tech closes the deal in hurry with S.C. safety, commitment No. 20

Lance Richardson, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound safety from Ware Shoals High (S.C.), became the 20th member of Georgia Tech’s 2009 recruiting class over the weekend when he committed to the Jackets during an official visit.

Richardson initially appeared on Tech’s radar earlier this month.

“It happened really fast,” Ware Shoals coach Jeff Murdock said. “Georgia Tech came in two weeks ago.

“He was actually set to go to Marshall for a visit this past Saturday, and he was going to commit. But Georgia Tech came in and it was a no-brainer.

“They invited him down for a visit, they offered and he committed.”

Richardson, who received an in-school visit from Tech defensive coordinator Dave Wommack, chose the Jackets over scholarship offers from Marshall, Oregon, Texas A&M and Toledo.

Dominique Reese was Richardson’s host during his weekend visit to Tech.

Florida coach Urban Meyer not happy with Lowndes DB Greg Reid

Lowdnes All-America defensive back Greg Reid said Florida coach Urban Meyer is not happy and let him know all about it during his official visit with the Gators last weekend.

There’s some history here: Reid committed to Florida nearly one year ago, then backed off it earlier this month because he felt he rushed his initial decision.

Unfortunately for Florida, Reid played a few days later in the Under Armour all-star game, winning defensive MVP honors with two interceptions. Reid’s life hasn’t been the same since, with countless colleges traveling to Valdosta to enter the recruiting sweepstakes.

“Coach Meyer was pretty upset,” Reid said. “He asked ‘Where were all these other schools before the Under Armour game? Did they even know who Greg Reid was as a sophomore and junior like we [Florida] did?’ [Meyer] spoke in a very powerful [tone].”

However, Meyer wasn’t too torn up to rescind the scholarship offer. In fact, Meyer tried his best to get Reid to commit again to Florida before leaving campus on Sunday. “He told me they still wanted me, and I said I wanted to hold off [on a decision] until I take my official visits.”

Reid, who is also considering UGA, Florida State, Alabama, and Tennessee, said he still intends to announce his college choice on signing day. Will Florida hold the offer until then? “I’m not sure. We didn’t really get into all of that.”

While Reid stated he has no favorites, he clearly favors Florida State over Florida. “I felt like I was at home at Florida State on my [official] visit, it was totally different from the feeling I got [during my recruiting trip] at Florida.”

North Atlanta QB Londry-Jackson gets D1 offer

North Atlanta quarterback Jamal Londry-Jackson has picked up his first offer from a Div. I-A school, Eastern Michigan.

He also received a call from Appalachian State, which has joined the list of I-AA schools recruiting Londry-Jackson. He has seven offers from I-AA schools, including Tennessee State of the Ohio Valley Conference.

Londry-Jackson said he will make his decision on National Signing Day, Feb. 4.

Westlake’s offensive backfield may play together again in college

Westlake running back Devon Babb picked up his second offer last week, from North Carolina A&T in Greensboro that competes in the Div. I-AA Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).

Babb has an offer from Alcorn State and plans to visit both schools. He said he is leaning toward Alcorn because his quarterback, Louis Kindle, has committed to the Braves, who compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

Camden County LB turns down major-college offers

Camden County linebacker Robert Williams has committed to Wofford.

Although Williams had offers from Div. I schools Arkansas State, Navy and Toledo, he said the Wofford’s proximity to home, its academic reputation and its proven ability to compete for the Southern Conference title and a Div. I-AA championship every year won him over. He visited the campus on Jan. 9.

“It was a very nice campus, with all the trees and things,” Williams said. “It was different than how it looks here in South Georgia.

“I didn’t want to go so far away from home just to play Div.-I,” Williams said. “I’m used to winning, and I know they compete at Wofford just like we do at Camden County. And I know that getting my degree from Wofford will make me set for life.”

Williams said he wants to major in computer science or pre-medicine.
