Florida coach Urban Meyer not happy with Lowndes DB Greg Reid
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Lowdnes All-America defensive back Greg Reid said Florida coach Urban Meyer is not happy and let him know all about it during his official visit with the Gators last weekend.
There’s some history here: Reid committed to Florida nearly one year ago, then backed off it earlier this month because he felt he rushed his initial decision.
Unfortunately for Florida, Reid played a few days later in the Under Armour all-star game, winning defensive MVP honors with two interceptions. Reid’s life hasn’t been the same since, with countless colleges traveling to Valdosta to enter the recruiting sweepstakes.
“Coach Meyer was pretty upset,” Reid said. “He asked ‘Where were all these other schools before the Under Armour game? Did they even know who Greg Reid was as a sophomore and junior like we [Florida] did?’ [Meyer] spoke in a very powerful [tone].”
However, Meyer wasn’t too torn up to rescind the scholarship offer. In fact, Meyer tried his best to get Reid to commit again to Florida before leaving campus on Sunday. “He told me they still wanted me, and I said I wanted to hold off [on a decision] until I take my official visits.”
Reid, who is also considering UGA, Florida State, Alabama, and Tennessee, said he still intends to announce his college choice on signing day. Will Florida hold the offer until then? “I’m not sure. We didn’t really get into all of that.”
While Reid stated he has no favorites, he clearly favors Florida State over Florida. “I felt like I was at home at Florida State on my [official] visit, it was totally different from the feeling I got [during my recruiting trip] at Florida.”

Ouch. Greg just called a TIME OUT on Urban Crier late in the game. Why so upset coach? Typical Urban Crier sense of entitlement.
Go with your heart Greg and do whatever the hell you want, not what Urban Crier wants. Florida has peaked anyway. The SEC is a very humbling conference and only way to go is down for the Gators.

GREG, If Crier is this upset just for changing you mind — imagine what it will be like to play for him. How much he would cry then when something goes wrong. He does not care about where your heart takes you - he only cares about himself. I am by no means a gator fan - the Bulldawg Nation would love to see ya in Bulldawg Red but you do whats best for you.
Follow your heart.
Hope to see ya playing Between the Hedges this fall. Once a Dawg .. Always A Dawg

I’m no fan of Coach Meyer. However, I’m with him (sort of) on this one. Listen, the kid made a commitment. As my granddaddy used to say, “Son, a man is no better than his word.” The ‘sort of” qualification is, unlike Coach Meyer, once the kid breaks his word, I’m finished with him. In fact, if he’s having this love affair with FSU, why not go ahead and “commit” again. After all, he can change his mind if he “falls out of love” with ‘em.
I know, I know, “he’s a great player, he’s just a kid, we all make mistkes, blah, blah, blah.” How long must we keep seeing how these totally self-centered kids with great talent just don’t make good team players before we understand that having a kid who passionately wants to be a Dawg is whom we should be recruiting.
I hope the kid finds a place where he can be mentored by someone who will help him get over himself and become a person who serves others selflessly.

Greg, give the gamecocks a chance, we got the best defense in the conference and we finally got a qb, you up to a little offense? Oh and by the way the puppy fans are right, the Gators have peaked, puppy fans have been saying that since my second year in Gainsville, so they’ve been going down hill for the last 17 years. And by the way the little endzone dance last year turned the rivalry around and the puppy’s 2008 schedule was the toughest of all time…………….. If your SAT score is over 400 you understand. “The biggest gap between football players and students as a whole occurred at the University of Florida, where players scored 346 points lower than the school’s overall student body. That’s larger than the difference in scores between typical students at the University of Georgia and Harvard University.” - The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Sunday, December 28, 2008
It seems grades really don’t matter at UF.

If the kid wants to play for a loser, meaning either UGA of FSU, let him go. We return all our starters and backups on defense and can use the scholarship for someone else who wants to be a Gator. He will be the one missing out on playing on next years repeat National Championship team although he probably wouldn’t play anyway. Funny how tough competition scares some guys off.

Greg — you’re no longer needed in Gainesville. Everyone knows you’re bailing because you’re afraid to compete for a starting job with Janoris Jenkins and Joe Haden. We won 2 out of the last 3 national championships without you, and we regularly beat the pants off both of the teams you’re leaning toward. Enjoy losing to UF for four years!

Don’t want this kid, let him go to FSU. Not that I’ve got any sympathy for the Gators, but the way he did UF was wrong — Urban was right to be p**. Give me kids that want to be Dawgs and are willing to fight for PT, not kids looking to play the system to get the best possible situation for themselves. Don’t care about age, the kid has already proven to be a two-faced liar. We don’t need that. That’s not how you win. You win with team players and hard workers, not prima donnas. It’s not all about talent. Look at Miami. Bunch of wanna-be future NFL players with no interest in “team”. That’s not what we wanna be.

Let me offer a simple translation here.
Greg Reid said “I felt like I was at home at Florida State on my [official] visit, it was totally different from the feeling I got [during my recruiting trip] at Florida.”
Translation: Urban Meyer is a pompous prick and recruits are starting to see through his antics. Urban Meyer is all about Urban Meyer rather than the best interest of an 18 yr old kid.
Outcome: Greg Reid will choose to play for a coach (Bowden or Richt) who truly has his best interests at heart rather than strong arming him into a committment.

Doesn’t it seem odd that Coach Myer is having to strong-arm some of these big name recruits. I’m sure the average UF fan (is that redundant?) expects all the blue-chippers to be lining-up at the door. I guess that’s not the case.
I’m thinking it’s going to be so enjoyable to watch the sidelines when things do start to go rough for UF. Coach Myere may spontaneously combust.

To answer Urban’s stupid question. Rodney Garner and Willie Martinez were on the sidelines during the Lowndes-Northside Warner Robins game. What a goof. Reid has been firm, but don’t think that other schools sat back and didn’t recruit him.

If I were this kid I wouldn’t go to Florida (and I’m an alum and huge Gator fan), the Gators are stacked at DB and they’re all young; plus now he’s p** off Urban and once he signs on the dotted line the Gators and Meyer will own him. This is the same at all schools, the recruits get to make the coaches dance, and guess, etc during the process; but once they sign they all regret big timing their coaches. I hope he goes to FSU, he’ll enjoy losing to Florida and playing in the Weedeater Bowl- Gators own the Noles! No need to rag on the dawgs, they’ve been owned for about 2 decades now by the National Champion Gators!

Greg Reid is an idiot. He will not qualify in the first place, so he is better off at UGA where history tells us, most of the football players can’t read.
BOTTOM LINE, the kid is afraid of competition. He knows that Florida just won a National Championship with 2 corners that he can’t beat out. He is not good enough to play for Florida.

FSU is about to go on probation so that will be a fun ride.

Let him go to FSU. Shows just how much common sense the guy has. This is a school that is getting ready to be slammed by the NCAA. Florida doesn’t need him. Let him go play with Booby Bowden and the rest of the Criminals. Also if he shows the sportsmanship that the rest of his team did in their losing play off game, then he is better off at Free Shoe U.

The scary thing is, Meyer is exactly right. All of you guys did nothing but bad mouth Greg when he was committed to Florida. “He won’t get into school” or “He’s too small” or “He’s a thug.” All of you know that it’s been said too.
Now that he is scared to compete at Florida, of course you guys are all about him. “He’s going to qualify!” or “He’s small but he’s just that good” or “He’s a great kid!”
So, back to Meyer’s question, where were you all before the Under Armour game?
It’s a shame that Florida has been with this kid, academic struggles and all, since his sophomore year, while all other schools stayed away from him.

Before everyone starts feeling teary eyed for Urban Meyer, just remember these commitments go both ways. How many kids have been promised and then left sitting by the phone b/cause recruiters couldn’t come up with enough scholarships to go around. Some of these recruits gets left out in the cold too. Being turned down happens in all walks of life, Urban Meyer should know this by now instead of picking at a 17 year old kid about it.

We should not be hanging breathlessly over the “committment” of a 17 year old. Good grief. Many kids this young think long term planning means thinking about what you will do this weekend. Too much attention being paid to many of these kids does them a disservice. Now, if he has a 1400/1600 on SAT and is a good player, go after him. Otherwise, give him good advice and tell him to concentrate on his studies and you will check back with him later. That’s what Meyer should have done when he was a sophmore and junior.

I agree with the others, however. If he commits early and then decides to de-commit, the coach should drop him like a hot rock. IF coaches had ethics, that is. Pull the scholarship offer. That might make young men think twice about these faux committments.

Free Shoes University could use a player like this. Reid seems to have that ‘me first’ mentality that has served the Seminoles so well this last decade and a half.
Meyer is a man of his word, and he expects the same from his players. He stood behind this kid for two years, and now the kid gets a lot of attention from other schools … so the kid backs out of his commitment.
Personally, I don’t think Florida is the school for him. It doesn’t sound like he’s ready to compete for a spot on the field, nor in the classroom. If he wants a place to be coddled, where people will blow sunshine up his tail — FSU is the place to be.
The ‘Gators are returning all of their defensive starters next season, and still have a couple of kids from the 2008 recruiting class waiting in the wings. Reid would have trouble cracking the third string in his first year. If he were willing to wait, and focus on his academics — that might have been a good thing.
But now that the kid has started listening to a bunch of Johnny-come-lately folks on the scene, he thinks he’s too good to compete for a spot.
Well, if he wants to win championships, his best chance was at the U of F — and it appears that ship has just sailed. The ‘Gators won’t miss him in 2009 or 2010, but I bet he will miss not going to Florida in a couple of years when he could of helped them — and most of all, they would have made him a better student athlete — not just an athlete.

Greg Reed… If he made a commitment to FLA. a year ago, why backout now. No coaching change, won the NCAA championship, no major shake up. Sounds like a lack of character to me. Do the Dawgs really want him? I know one Dawg that thinks we are better off without him. Go to FS, just Gooooooooo!

Greg, ok i can see maybe going to UGA, but FSU, you have got to be kidding me. That program sucks right now. I think Meyer made an excellent point. None of these programs were really interested in Reid until a couple of weeks ago. Florida was after this kid long before the others jumped on the ban wagon. Nobody had anything decent at all to say about you until now. So, i guess i just can’t understand why you would even have second thoughts about going elsewhere. Dude you were a lock at UF and now you having second thoughts about playing for a team of that caliber. Dude, what is wrong with you? Man i would of committed to UF this past weekend if i were you. Why would you want to go play for teams that don’t even compare to UF? That team is hot right now. Greg, go to Florida. Being the huge Vikings fan that i am, i don’t think i could bare seeing you go to FSU or UGA and be a part of losing programs. Florida is just where it’s at right now. And also i think you should stop doing these interviews with the AJC because all it does is try to make them look as if they are saints when all this does is creates controversy. Let it be your decision. Stop telling them everything into your business. Respect each recruiting program.

I think Greg is pretty smart. He wants the best chance to play. Why go to a school where upperclassmen DB’s are likely start for two or three more years? The chance to start at a school that’s down in numbers at the position is what he’s looking for I hope.
As for Urban’s strong arming Greg…I think it is another example of how classless he is. Meyer is a total jerk. Greg is a teenager. He is growing and learning and changing every minute. He is not to be blamed for rethinking a commitment he made a year ago. If I were him, I’d think long and hard about going to UF now. Meyer’s motivation is Meyer. He doesn’t care about what’s best for Greg Reid. He can’t understand that this young person is making the biggest decision of his life, so why would anyone want to play for such a selfish jerk?

The arrogance of Gator fans is just amazing. Not long ago Ron Zook was coach and the sky was falling. Now, their fans are oh so sure they’re going to win back-to-back national championships. Humility is certainly lacking in Gainesville.

Greg Reid has every right to change his mind.He should be sure of where he wants to go and most important who he wants to play for. If Myer gets a better job offer he will take that even though he has made a committment to his players at Fla. There is no such thing as a “commitment” anymore. Coach Myer had to get mad he is a salesman trying to sell his product no big deal on either of their parts.

Speak the truth, Greg. You looked at the All-SEC CB depth chart at Florida…Haden, Jenkins…backed up by Pierre-Lewis, Anderdon, Brown, Moses Jenkins, Bushnell…and said I can’t compete with these guys. I better back out of my year-log commitment to the Gators and go over to Free-Shoes-University. They accept anyone there, and their defense sucks. I can play there. Also, if I go to FSU or Georgia it can be all about “ME”. If I go to Florida, it will have to be about what is best for the team. I am not a team player. I will fit in better at FSU or Georgia where it can be more about “ME”. Urban Meyer is a jerk just like all those Georgia fans say he is. He expects me to be true to my word. Imagine that. What a jerk!

Oh, one other thing from Greg…I noticed the Dre Kirkpatrick was in Gainesville, too. I noticed that he said he had a great time in Gainesville and it was great to be around the “family” of Gators on his visit. Imagine that. Dre thinks being part of a family would be great. He will fit in well with the jerk, Meyer. Family. Ya kidding! Family is about “us”. The most important thing is “ME” in capital letters. Dre, go ahead a be a Gator. You sound like a team player. What a jerk you are, too. You might even go to Bama. They are jerks, too. Saban also thinks winning is about team. They are so stupid. What jerks Meyer and Saban are.

I hear all the UGA fans saying that the Gators fans on here are treating Greg like crap. The truth is that we were all pretty respectful of him and his indecision for a long time. We were nice to him. Call us (and Urban Meyer) arrogant or just sore losers, but we only ended up this way after how he treated the Gator Nation. He “grew up a huge Gator fan” and then says that he got two corners whom were coming back after he watched the NC game. Not a congratulations or a Go Gators (the things u would expect from a die-hard Gator fan). He then rates his FSU visit an 8 and his UF one a 6. How is it that after going to every game for two straight years, your dream school suddenly turns into a 6 (below our sworn enemies). He treated us like crap. He’s a great player and a confused young man and I understand that. He just didn’t have to part like he did (and I’m not even defending what Urban Meyer said)

There are more pro scouts already drooling over Greg Reid than any one in the Gator defensive backfield and he hasn’t even played a college football game yet. That IS the real reason for all the venom and fear you hear now coming out of Gator land. Even as a freshman there is no team in the land that will be able to keep Reid off the field. No team, including the Gators. And that is the reason Urban Myer is desperately holding out hope with a scholarship still in hand that Reid will still come his way. Go to FSU Reid and you and Demps can enjoy eating gator together.

This is the most important decision this young man will make in his life. He should be selfish. He should do what’s in his best interest. Why go somewhere and red-shirt or play backup for two years if you can potentially start instantly at a top 20 school. Let’s not kid ourselves, this kid and all the others are hoping one day to play in the NFL. Do whatever will help you achieve that goal the fastest. It’s not about the fans or coaches of these schools. It has nothing to do with your character. Pick the school that will help you achieve your goals and when you get there, work your butt off and you will be fine.

I think the kid really needs to pay attention to what Meyer said. None of these other programs even knew who Greg Reid was before late this year; and now they’re basically trying to tread on what UF has been doing all this time. UF coaches did their homework, and have been courting this kid for YEARS… they saw his potential early. These other schools just jumped on board after they saw UF coming after him, and after he’d accomplished some great things this year. That says 2 things: 1. UF coaches must be significantly better at identifying true talent; often before a player has actually exhibited brilliance. If UF saw that in Reid 2 years ago, then that’s clearly who he SHOULD want to develop under, to take the next logical step. 2. There’s something to be said for remaining loyal to the folks who saw something in you long before everybody else. All I’ll say about him is good luck with his decision, and I hope he doesn’t make one he’ll regret, by overlooking those 2 aspects of the situation.

The headline on AJC.com reads “Florida’s Meyer miffed at Ga.’s top player”. Wasn’t Branden Smith the #1 player in the state a few weeks ago? I guess according to the AJC, once you commit to a school your stock plummets. Reminds me of A.J. Green and Julio Jones last year.

To read some of these comments, some of you are very ignorant in your thinking.
1. UGA has Branden Smith and 2 other CB commits. Branden was promised the #1 jersey, as well as #1 on the depth chart. Hence, his committment to UGA and his life-long dreams to be Champ Bailey. Why would he go to UGA? Don’t say he’s afraid of competition, because a 5* talent is never afraid of competition. 2. UF, well, it’s UF. Meyer plays head games with recruits. Usually he just pulls the offer once they decide to visit any other school, so obviously he sees Reid’s talent level and potential as things that could help him and UF. 3. FSU has a favorable depth chart, Gerald Demps (current teammate) is committed to FSU and Reid really connected with Mickey Andrews and the current FSU players. 4. IT IS THE DECISION OF THE YOUNG MAN to decide where he wants to go. If it is SMU or any of UF, UGA, or FSU, then it’s Greg’s choice. Call him what you want, but it’s not fair to criticize a young man who wants to make the right decision for himself. Greg connected with UF’s coaches, but they let some key guys leave to go elsewhere, so he lost his love for UF. For a kid who was a life-long UF fan, it’s not simply a case where he just decided his heart was not in Gainesville—-he honestly felt he had no future there.
Some of you are beyond homerish in your thoughts and you need to take a step back from the keyboard.

REID IS GOD
…to a lot of programs desperate for his talent, maybe in his own mind. But Reid is showing a lack of character on multiple fronts: 1. Changing Commitment because of last minute attention, like ditching your prom date because other girls that had turned you down noticed you looked good in a tux. 2. Fear of Competition, over the years he would get his shot at UF sooner or later, and get to play in big prime time games. 3. Betraying Trust with his disrespectful description of confidential discussions with Coach Meyer. Sounds like a serious case of “Big Fat Swollen Head”
I hope he develops into a fine and successful young man, and God bless him if he already is, but at this stage he is flirting with labels like “lazy”, “punk”, “not loyal”, “afraid to compete”, and “taking the easy way”. Sooner or later he will have a rough patch, and his new friends will be gone. Right now they are all telling him what he likes to hear, and because he has turned on the people that believed in him from early on, he will probably find himself regretting it one day.
Meyer was honest with him about how he felt, surely expected that conversation to be confidential, and was trying to teach him something about character and life whether he ends up going to UF or not.

play for a coach and a program that wins big games and wins championships, a program that is head and shoulders above the rest of the SEC or play for a program in massive decline with an 80 year old coach who wont know your name, or a coach and program that consistently underachieves and has been dominated by it’s biggest rival, your choice. Florida is loaded with young CB’s so it wont hurt them either way you go. If you want to go to a place so bereft of talent that you will start anywhere you want from day 1, then i guess you should go to one of those places.

If Reid doesn’t want to come to UF, so be it. It’s his choice to make. But, to think that losing one commit is the beginning of the end is stupid. Florida is still considered to have a top 5 class by many and that’s before the ink is dried on many guys up in the air. This happens to all teams. Florida just won it’s second SEC and national championship in 3 years. Our Heisman Trophy-winning QB is coming back. Every defensive player on the 2-deep returns. Save for Harvin and Murphy, this team is ridiculously great shape for ‘09 and beyond. Save your obituaries for your own failures to live up to expectations, UGA Nation. Lord knows that pre-season accolades are way more glorious than actual National Championships and a winning record over your most hated rival in the last 20 years. Oh, you really have our number as Richt is 2-6 against Florida with not titles. Save it for your Dawg club meetings.

To DAWGS DROOL - I don’t hate Coach Meyer. I think he’s a great football coach, maybe as good as Coach Saban at Alabama. It seems fairly clear that Meyer, Saban, Richt, Nutt, and Myles are all great coaches.
The problem is that most people don’t see or understand or care about the character issue. All these men may have great character, I don’t know them personally. However, just like you can get a pretty good idea about a person’s worldview by reading what they say on this blog, you can observe these coaches being interviewed, hear them give speeches, see them abandon their team for more money, etc., and get a pretty good idea of what is important to them. Based upon such evidence it is fairly safe to say Saban is all about Saban. It seems just as easy to see that Richt is a man of great character (I don’t expect a Florida fan who views the world through a blue and orange lens to agree). You don’t adopt kids from an orphanage in the Ukraine without some understanding of your purpose on this planet not being about yourself (as you can easily see from reading this blog, many on here think it is all about self - yes, that is so sad).
I think what many of us see in Coach Meyer is a great coach with a very big ego. Some of us see that as a negative, He is obviously very talented. As a father, I just would prefer to have my son entrusted to a man like Coach Richt rather than Coach Meyer. Obviously you can disagree with me on that, as well as other things. However, it is inappropriate when folks get snotty on here. I am not saying you have done that, but the moniker DAWGS DROOL is less than classy, even if in jest). Obviously many of the Dawg and Gator and Tech fans on here are confused about just what is really important in life. Yes, it is embarrassing, not to mention scary. Fortunately, they are not representative of the true Dawg, Gator and Tech fans I have grown up with and known for over 50 years.
I grew up with and played football with guys that played at UGA, Florida, Auburn and GT. We remain good friends to this day. There are great people who attended all these fine institutions. There are fine people who are fans of all these and other schools. Such people do not call fans of UGA names like you see on these blogs. They do not call Florida fans by derogatory names. They do not call fans of Tech ugly names. Why? Because they are people with character. They are successful in life. They don’t embarrass their families, schools or themselves. They are people one can enjoy being around. They respect others and are respected by others.
When I see these kids being concerned only with themselves, I fear what kind of citizens they will become. When I see supposedly grown people defending such self-centeredness, I cringe to think what the generations to come will be like. I fear we are seeing this today in our society.
Bottom line - we need more men like Mark Richt in coaching. Having been a coach, I hurt for all these coaches when any of their players turn out to be of less than stellar character. The truth is these men can only do so much with 100 players who can not be chaperoned everywhere they go. It is not often you are fortunate enough to coach a young man with the character of a Tim Tebow. Nevertheless, I would hope that we would attempt to recruit kids with good character. When a kid demonstrates questionable character in the recruiting process, I would hope all schools would quit recruiting them. IMHO, this Reid kid has demonstrated a character flaw. First, he de-committed (yes, I do believe that a man is no better than his word). Second, he betrayed a confidence in revealing his private talk with Coach Meyer. He’s obviously a great football player. I hope he goes somewhere where he will be mentored into being a man who is not selfish nor self-centered. We do not need any more Terrell Owens in this world, we’ve got plenty of those. I don’t think UGA needs any more kids like this. We’ve got enough already.
Oh, by the way, I never hated Spurrier. In fact, I think he’s very funny. I would love to play golf with him. I just wish he had stayed where he belonged, to wit: The University of Florida, a great university (just like The University of Georgia).

Reid should be commended for the maturity he is showing. He said a talk with Tommy Tubberville at the Under Armour All American Game opened his eyes that this decision was about more than just football and about life. Reid is showing tremendous maturity in assessing his life and finding a school he can grow at as a person and athlete and anyone hating on him is doing so out of bitterness.
