Central Florida gives deadline to Tucker’s Jonathan Davis
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Tucker’s Jonathan Davis is “on the clock” with Central Florida.
Davis, an AJC Super 11 selection, took an official visit this past weekend to Central Florida, which said it had a football scholarship waiting for Davis. Central Florida coach George O’Leary didn’t pressure Davis into committing, but said he would like to “know one way or the other” when he makes an in-home visit on Jan. 26.
That gives Davis around a week to see what other college options, if any, become available before the Central Florida deadline.
“I like [O’Leary], he knows a lot has been going on with me lately,” Davis said. “He wants me at Central Florida, and said take some time to think about it.”
“I like Central Florida a lot. But I’m glad he gave me some time, because so much happened so quickly over the last week. I’m still trying to process it all.”
The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis also has an offer from Alabama-Birmingham, while he is still trying to contact some other schools recruiting him before he committed to South Carolina on Dec. 17. The Gamecocks rescinded the scholarship offer on Jan. 9.
Davis said during his official visit to Central Florida, some of the other prospects brought up the South Carolina situation. “They just kept saying it was messed up. I didn’t really have anything to say back about it because … I’ve moved forward. I’m trying to focus only on the schools recruiting me.”

Jarvis Jones resists pressure from Urban Meyer to commit to Florida
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Florida coach Urban Meyer tried his best to land the state’s top uncommitted prospect, Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones, on Sunday.
However, Meyer’s strategy didn’t work, Jones told the AJC. But the Gators are still one of his finalists, along with LSU, UGA, Texas and Southern Cal.
“Coach Meyer wanted me to commit, but I told him him I wanted to wait until Signing Day (Feb. 4) so I didn’t make any mistakes,” he said. “He told me that was the right thing to do and that a scholarship would be waiting for me if I decided to come to Florida.”
Jones said Meyer talked to him about his “abilities” and his future as a Gator during this weekend’s official visit. “He told me Brandon Spikes will be a senior, so I may see some playing time,” Jones said.
Jones said he also had the opportunity to meet some of the key members of Florida’s national championship team, including Tim Tebow and Chris Rainey. “The players were real humble,” he said. “It’s just a cool atmosphere.”
Jones has already taken official visits USC and Georgia. He is off to Texas next weekend and LSU on Jan. 30.

Heisman Trophy winner urges WR Cameron Kenney to pick Oklahoma over UGA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
It’s down to UGA and Oklahoma for wide receiver Cameron Kenney, who is from the Atlanta suburbs. Kenney made an official visit to Oklahoma this weekend.
“I’ve got a lot of questions in my heart to think about,” Kenney told the AJC over the telephone from Norman, Okla., on Sunday night.
“Do I play for Oklahoma, the No. 2 team in the country which has the Heisman Trophy winner at quarterback [Sam Bradford] coming back to compete for next year’s national championship?”
“Or do I play in front of family and friends in the SEC at Georgia? That would be something special, something people from my hometown [of Dacula] would always remember. At Oklahoma, I’d be playing in front of 86,000 fans, but not really many people that I would know.”
“I keep going back and forth between Georgia and Oklahoma, and I don’t really know which school it is going to be. [However], I do feel that after I make my official visit to Georgia next week, I should know.”
Oklahoma is a late entry to the sweepstakes for Kenney, who plays at Garden City (Kan.) Junior College and initially committed to Auburn. The Sooners offered Kenney an official visit and scholarship last Wednesday.
During the recruiting trip to Oklahoma, Kenney spent a lot of time with Bradford. The Sooners have made wide receivers a top priority in recruiting. “Coach [Bob Stoops] said they some wide receivers that can come in and be impact players, and they feel like I can be that type of player for them.”
“Bradford is a great guy, down to Earth. He feels very strongly that they will compete again for the national championship next year, and said that played a major factor in him returning to Oklahoma. He said they need wide receivers, guys he has confidence in that can makes plays. [Bradford] said he hoped that we could be teammates on next year’s national champions.”
Kenney said he was scheduled to meet with UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo later this week in Kansas.

No official visits for Northside All-State LB Eric Fields, says report
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Northside’s Eric Fields, an AJC Super 11 member, told Palmetto Sports that he can’t take any official visits because he has yet to take the SAT or ACT.
Field just finished his senior season. The All-State linebacker committed early to Clemson over Georgia, then backed away from the Tigers to consider the Bulldogs again in September. He made an unofficial to Georgia for the Alabama game with his teammate, defensive tackle, Abry Jones, who has committed to UGA.
When Fields didn’t feel like the Bulldogs were very interested the second time around, he announced that he intended to sign with Clemson.
Fields told the website because he has not taken either college entrance exam, therefore has not been allowed to schedule any official visits. He said he remains committed to Clemson, but has not talked to any Tigers coaches in two weeks.

Does M.L. King’s Kight still have an offer from Georgia Tech?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Rumors continue to swirl that Georgia Tech has withdrawn M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight’s scholarship offer.
Kight took an official visit to Ole Miss this weekend. He’s considering offers from Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and Ole Miss.
M.L. King coach Corey Jarvis told the AJC, to the best of his knowledge, Tech’s offer is still on the table.
“When we talked to [Tech assistant] coach B.J. [Brian Jean-Mary] on Tuesday or Wednesday, he said they’d give him the chance to go to Ole Miss,” Jarvis said on Sunday evening.
Kight has confirmed to the AJC that he will consult with his family prior to making a decision.

Perry OL Johnnie Farms unsure if he will make up Central Florida trip
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Perry offensive lineman Johnnie Farms, a North Carolina commitment, cancelled his official visit to Central Florida this weekend.
“I decided not to go,” the 6-foot-3, 285-pound offensive tackle said. “I just felt like staying home. It was my grandfather’s birthday.”
Farms, an AJC Super 11 selection, said he did not know if he was going to make up the visit. “There is no real point since I’m committed to UNC,” he said.
However, you can never count out Farms for providing recruiting surprises. He initially tried to commit to Alabama, but the Crimson Tide said they were full at his position. He then picked South Carolina, but switched to North Carolina, in part because “the education was better [than South Carolina].”
Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier traveled to Perry, to defend his school’s academics and try to convince Farms to take an official visit. Farms said he would think about it, then later declined. Farms then said he would take an official visit to Central Florida and was thinking about going to Auburn, but then did not visit Central Florida.

UGA’s first two commits, Dexter Moody and Washuan Ealey, visit Athens
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
ECI linebacker Dexter Moody and tailback Washaun Ealey were Georgia’s first two commitments for its 2009 recruiting class. The two teammates made official visits together to UGA over the weekend, Moody confirmed.
Ealey is one of the most accomplished high school tailbacks in state history, drawing some comparisons to Herschel Walker. Ealey rushed for nearly 8,000 career yards and set state records for career and single-season touchdowns.
But some consider Moody to be the better prospect, as he could end up playing linebacker or defensive end (where he started at ECI) in college.
UGA coach Mark Richt traveled to Twin City last week to discuss academics with both players. Ealey told the AJC both he and Moody are closer to meeting college entrance requirements.

Florida QB ranks his Georgia Tech visit as a “10”
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Dontae Aycock, a quarterback for Chamberlain High in Tampa, Fla., described his official visit to Georgia Tech this weekend a success.
“I would give it a 10 rating,” he told GoJackets.com. “It went that well.”
Aycock, whose host was Anthony Allen, had an opportunity to meet with Tech coach Paul Johnson.
“He told me that he really wanted me at Georgia Tech and how much he thinks I can add to making the team that much better in the future,” Aycock said.
“He said he was recruiting me as a quarterback and that he feels I can add a lot to the position if I came to Tech. I really liked him a lot as he made me feel wanted.”
Aycock said he plans to wait until signing day on Feb. 4 to announce his decision.
“I have two schools that I am considering, in Georgia Tech and Louisville and possibly a third in Illinois. I went to Louisville on a visit two weeks ago and I liked that visit too.
“I can’t say right now I have a leader.”

Blessed Trinity OL cancels official visit, commits
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Blessed Trinity’s Matt Crisafi committed during his official visit to William and Mary, forsaking his scheduled visit to Furman next weekend.
“Furman was supportive of my decision, and I was really appreciative of all they’d done for me,” the 6-foot-4, 305-pound guard and player on The Georgia 150 said. “I’d seen Furman before, so I already knew what to expect and how to compare my final three (Samford, William and Mary and Furman).”
Before committing to the Tribe, Crisafi, who graded out at 90 percent this season, had formally visited only Samford. With focus on each schools’ business departments, he sensed William and Mary was the right place for him.
“I got the right feeling from the academic advisers, coaches and players,” Crisafi said. “It seemed like a place where I’d have great success in the classroom, as well as on the football field.”

Milton RB needs more time to think about things
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Milton tailback Taj Harris returned from his first and only official visit to Virginia Military Institute this weekend.
“I did not commit because I want to have some time to think about what I want to do,” the 5-foot-9, 193-pound senior said.
Harris said his visit to VMI exceeded expectations.
“I met a bunch of the players and got a chance to walk around and see the campus,” he said. “I thought it was real nice and it went a lot better than I expected.”
Harris does not have any other visits scheduled.
