Jarvis Jones resists pressure from Urban Meyer to commit to Florida
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Florida coach Urban Meyer tried his best to land the state’s top uncommitted prospect, Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones, on Sunday.
However, Meyer’s strategy didn’t work, Jones told the AJC. But the Gators are still one of his finalists, along with LSU, UGA, Texas and Southern Cal.
“Coach Meyer wanted me to commit, but I told him him I wanted to wait until Signing Day (Feb. 4) so I didn’t make any mistakes,” he said. “He told me that was the right thing to do and that a scholarship would be waiting for me if I decided to come to Florida.”
Jones said Meyer talked to him about his “abilities” and his future as a Gator during this weekend’s official visit. “He told me Brandon Spikes will be a senior, so I may see some playing time,” Jones said.
Jones said he also had the opportunity to meet some of the key members of Florida’s national championship team, including Tim Tebow and Chris Rainey. “The players were real humble,” he said. “It’s just a cool atmosphere.”
Jones has already taken official visits USC and Georgia. He is off to Texas next weekend and LSU on Jan. 30.

JJ, DO YOU REALLY WANT TO SPEND FOUR YEARS WITH URBAN CRIER? HE’S A JERK AND MOST OF THE GATORS ARE SPOILED, ARROGANT, LACK OF CLASS JERKS. IT STARTS WITH THE COACH AND URBAN MEYER IS A POOR EXCUSE FOR THE WAY HE COACHES AND PLAYS. HE WINS BUT LOOK AT THE ATTITUDE AND THE ATMOSPHERE HE CREATES. FLORIDA WILL BE DUE SOME HUMBLING IN THE NEAR FUTURE. PRIDE COMES BEFORE A FALL AND SOME STUFF WILL HIT THE FAN IN FLORIDA IN THE NEXT FEW YEARS.
GEORGIA MAY NOT WITH THEM ALL … BUT WHAT A COACH. COACH RICHT HAS INTEGRITY, HONESTY AND LIVES BY CHRISTIAN PRINCIPLES. HE’S LIKE A FATHER WHO WILL HAVE YOUR BEST INTEREST AT HEART. HE’S NOT ONLY A COACH BUT A SPIRITUAL INFLUENCE IN HIS PLAYERS LIFE.
WILL URBAN MEYER EVER GO BOWLING WITH YOU? HE’LL USE YOU UP, CAST YOU ASIDE AND LOOK FOR NEW BLOOD TO BUILD HIS KINGDOM.
GEORGIA FOOTBALL IS SPECIAL IN GEORGIA … YOUR HOME STATE OF GEORGIA. YOU’RE SPECIAL. STAY HOME AND HELP THE DAWGS SHOW URBAN CRIER … CRY URBAN CRY … CRY URBAN CRY. HE’LL CRY HIS EYES OUT IF YOU SIGN WITH GEORGIA. CRY, URBAN, CRY!

UGA is done in recruting this year. This kid is a gator, and so is the T.E. Charles.Get real UGA fans, who would you want to play for, Billy Graham, who never gets p** off when his team gets embarrassed on national T.V. at home by Al, and Ga.TEch, not to mention Fl.,or Urban Meyer, who has won 2 crystal balls in 4 years. Forgot to mention the pathetic D.C. Jones would be playing for, Richt’s best man(Martinez) who wasn’t in the top 25 D.C. on rivals list, or Charlie Strong who was rated the top D.C. on the same list. UGA has gone as far as they can with Billy Graham as coach. He can brag about his 10 win seasons, but maybe he should realize, UGA fans are more concerned about beating Fl. more than twice in 8 years, than they are about 10 win seasons. UGA will once again be playing for 3rd place in SEC east, and will stay there as long as Meyer is at Fl. Forgot to mention, the wide receiver Brown from Tenn. will pick the vols over Billy Graham. Poor Billy can’t out recruit a coach that has never won a game in the SEC. Pretty pathetic. But UGA fans will have their normal excuse(Can’t get the top talent to leave his home state), maybe they should try that on Jarvis Jones going to Fl, and Eric Berry going to Tenn. What a pathetic coaching staff UGA has put together. These guys can’t recruit, and they sure can’t coach in big games.(Al,Fl, and Ga.Tech) Enough said!!

Jarvis…you have a chance to play and learn one year behind Brandon Spikes. Then you get to take his place in the middle of Charlie Strong’s national championship defense. It does not get any better than that. By the way, you probably get to win a national championship your first year on campus. Not bad!

The choice is simple for Jarvis: Have the chance to go to Pasadena and pick up a championship ring or go to Orlando or Nashville for Imitation Bowl. A once in a lifetime choice to grab the golden ring of championship and class, quality education.
Or join a program of pretenders who have no idea how it feels to run for the roses, wear the green jacket, or any of the signs of a champion.

Dear Jimmyin Gainesville, Would you think it natural that a group of collegiate players that have won 2 crystal footballs in the last 3 years might be a little bit arrogant? What bothers me are the punkish, illiterate 17 year olds with the 5 caps on a table in a rural backwoods town who believe a minute of fame comes down to jerking some coaches around with their iconic machinations. You know the saying—Once a Punk, ALWAYS a Punk!!

Dap, I’m a UGA fan, but unlike you and many other UGA fans,i’m in touch with reality. You believe every excuse Richt and his boy Martinez tell you. Now it’s the injuries on the defense in fall practice. Give me a break, Martinez’s defense has regressed each year over the last 3 seasons and this latest addition finished 11th in total defense in the SEC.Yet Billy Graham defended the loser’s defense after the Kentucky, Auburn, and Tech games. That is a loser coach mentality, and that is what Richt has become. Losing coaches make excuses, winning coaches make changes, and don’t have loyality to losing coaches. Richt has surrounded himself with 2 of the worst coordinators in the SEC, BOO BOO, and Martinez. If you don’t understand what is going on at UGA, you will fit right in with the Billy Graham worshipers, and you can talk about what a great man, what a christian man Richt is. We need a football coach, not a reverend. Just mark it down, Jarvis Jones, and Reid from Valdosta will both be gators, and they will play for the best D.C. in the SEC, not the worst.

“Martinez’s defense has regressed each year over the last 3 seasons”
That’s not true. You are flat out making things up. 2007’s defense was much better than the defense he fielded in 2006 both statistically and in the win-loss column. But, judging by your inane ramblings, it is obvious that you cannot remember that far back. You claim that Charlie Strong is the best D.C. in the SEC, when only a year ago some were questioning his job security because of how bad Florida’s defense was in 2007. I for one think that Charlie Strong is an excellent defensive coordinator, but he has had his ups and downs just like everyone else. Martinez had a bad year in 2008, but he has had good ones before that and he will have good ones again. You are very short sighted and I pray to god that our coaches do not listen to idiots like yourself. We’ll really be in a pickle if we start going through assistant coaches like paper towels. Think Auburn and Tennessee my friend.
If you’re so miserable as a Georgia fan, who is holding the gun to your head making you support this program? Maybe its time to consider another bandwagon clown. You seem to have a mancrush on Urban Meyer so maybe its time to don the orange and blue bandwagon jumper. Good riddance my man. Don’t let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out. You will not be missed. I promise you that.

The reality is…UGA will suck the next few years. That’s the way it is. UGA beats a few “cupcake” teams and the Bulldog Nation screams for a NC. Then comes Bama and UF, true contenders, and totally humiliate UGA on national TV, not to mention GT. UGA barely beats USC, UK, Auburn, and Vandy. If you want championships, go to Florida. As a UGA graduate (class of 81), I just tell it like it is.

But Meyer calls 2 timeouts at he end of an a$$ whooping and now he has no class? Come on. You can’t have it both ways. I promise you one thing. Richt will not be doing anything to anger Meyer because he knows what happens if he does. Meyer has a stable of hoes and Richt is the first horse in the barn. Get used to it.

Carty @ 5:44 AM - 1980 = Lone Championship?? I think not!!!
1942 - 11–1 Georgia was consensus champions, being chosen by at least half of the recognized polls. UGA then beat UCLA 9-0 in the Rose Bowl.
1946 - 11–0 Georgia was listed first by Williamson System.

Who cares? Really, a “UGA fan”? You sound like a UF fan trying to bad mouth UGA’s coach in order to win a couple of recruits. I don’t know if you are 12 year old or younger but I can tell UGA’s program has been a lot “worse off” than it is now. Richt is a proven winner, he has been part of FSU’s dominate program days, part of Miami’s powerful program of the late 80’s. Winner. Guess what he is more disappointed than you are about the poorly played, and yes poorly coached games this season. He doesn’t need us fans telling him that.

Quality Individual? Yeah, I guess sending your entire team out onto the field after a touchdown is a mark of a quality coach. I guess touchdowns have been that hard to get against the Gators. Think that might trigger a dangerous brawl or degrade your opponent. Then Richt had the audacity to lie about it (not very convincingly). In my book that deserve 2 timeouts in the waning moments of a 39-point win. No good turn should go unpunished.

I’ll agree that Florida will be a contender again next year but very soon kids being recruited for this spread offense will figure out that being in that system college is probably as far as they’ll go in their football playing careers.I mean Teblow is probably one of the most dominant players to come around in a long time and he can’t even get drafted high enough to leave. These highly recruited offensive players will eventually figure this out and start snubbing the Gators.
By josh

I agree with “Joe Cox For Prez”. The spread offense is not designed for athletes to use college as a stepping stone for the NFL. Athletes like JJ, that are in highschool and know that they have a chance to play in the NFL someday will follow Stafford and Moreno’s lead. Yeah, your right, go to Gainesville and win a few nice rings, or go to UGA and then to the NFL and make millions so you can buy Tebow’s ring off of E-bay when his pizza delivery job lays him off 2 years after college.

2 championships in 3 years v no championships since long before Jarvis was alive. A chance to win a NC as a freshman and build on that throughout his career v losing to Florida 4 times in Jacksonville.
Not a tough call. Florida is the right choice. Florida also develops big time middle linebackers from Andra Davis to Brandon Siler to Brandon Spikes. Florida puts middle linebackers in the NFL. Jarvis has a chance to be the next great one.

You’ve been very lucky to get in at times with the losses. UGA had a one loss SEC championship season a few years ago and didn’t get that lucky.
