Injured Tucker LB rewards college for loyalty
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Tucker linebacker Tevin Holliman said loyalty was the main reason he plans to play football at Western Kentucky.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker said in a text message Sunday that while he had nearly 10 scholarship offers, it ended up being an easy decision to commit to Western Kentucky. He said the school continued recruiting him after his injured the ACL in his left knee in week 2 of Tucker’s run to the Class AAAA championship.
“They were the only school that stayed in touch with me and came to visit me after my injury,” he said. “They stuck with me.”
Holliman had 33 tackles and four sacks for Tucker. He said Western Kentucky has hinted that he’ll play defensive end in college.
Central Florida, Akron, Buffalo, Ohio, South Alabama, Eastern Michigan, and Iowa State also offered.

Notre Dame, Ohio St., FSU, and Georgia Tech pursue Gainesville junior WR
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Gainesville receiver Tail-er Jones is scheduled to participate in four junior days during the next three weekends.
Jones will visit Ohio State and Notre Dame on Jan. 24 and 25. His father, Andre Jones, played football for the Fighting Irish.
“It’s great to go somewhere where a family member is known so well and has a great reputation like my father does at Notre Dame,” he said.
Jones is debating which junior day he’ll attend on Jan. 31.
“I’m still trying to decide whether to go to Florida State or Georgia Tech that weekend,” he said.
He recently received an invitation to attend junior day at Texas on Feb. 8.
“I have a lot of interest in Texas,” he said. “With them being a powerhouse school and the fact that they invited me says a lot about what I’ve been able to accomplish through hard work.”
Jones currently holds a dozen scholarship offers from programs such as Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Miami, Ole Miss, Ohio State and South Carolina.

SEC school is the leader to sign Heritage’s Justin Jones
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Heritage tight end Justin Jones only has one official visit scheduled, and it’s the same school he has been talking to all along.
“I think Vanderbilt wants me,” Jones said. “I went up there for the Florida-Vanderbilt game and had a real good time.”
The 6-foot-8, 252-pound Jones said Vanderbilt head coach Bobby Johnson and assistant coach Des Kitchings are making an in-home visit on Jan. 28, two days before his official visit to Vanderbilt.
Jones said Vanderbilt will most likely put him at defensive end even though he mostly played tight end in high school.
Jones said he has also been in contact with Michigan State and feels they may be the next to offer.
“I don’t know what they are going to do,” he said. “It’s getting kind of late in the game.”
Jones was an early commitment to Kentucky, but backed off to consider other schools.

Lithia Springs DT picks Boston College, as expected
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Defensive tackle Bryan Davis, who made 75 tackles this season for Lithia Springs, committed to Boston College over the weekend, after making his only official visit there with his mother.
Embracing the Eagles, Davis decided not to visit Georgia Southern, whom he said recruited him pretty heavily. He said Alabama-Birmingham and Louisville had cooled on him. He was also having serious talks with Georgia Tech, which had yet to offer.
“(Boston College) was showing me the most love so I went ahead and took their offer,” Davis said. “Once I got on campus, walked around and got a feel for it, I knew it was the right decision. The caching staff was great.”
Davis said he plans to ink his commitment on National Signing Day on Feb. 4.

It’s UAB over Louisiana Tech for Eastside DB Justin Wray
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Eastside quarterback/defensive back Justin Wray committed to Alabama-Birmingham after making an official visit this weekend.
Wray, a 6-foot-1, 200-pounder who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds, will play safety for the Blazers. He picked UAB over Lousiana Tech, where he took an official visit last weekend.
He said he felt comfortable with the city, campus and football program. “It’s a developing program,” he said. “I feel if we do what we’re coached to do, we can make a big impact.”
Wray was told he’ll have a chance to play early. “I have a good chance, but I have to compete to get a spot and I have no problem with that.”
An all-around player at Eastside. He passed for more than 1,400 yards and 11 TDs and rushed for 500 and nine scores in 2008.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It’s decision time for M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight, who spent the weekend on an official visit to Ole Miss.
The 5-foot-10, 210-pound Kight confirmed that he’s still torn over whether to commit to Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State or Ole Miss.
“It was very exciting,” Kight said of his weekend trip to Oxford, Miss. “Right now, I want to sit down with my parents and do the pros and cons.
“After that, I will make a decision.”

Newnan OL confirms he made right decision after visiting Alabama school
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Newnan offensive guard Adam Calhoun reaffirmed his commitment to Alabama State during his official visit to the Montgomery, Ala., campus this weekend.
“I had a lot of fun,” the 6-foot-7, 335-pound senior said. “I hung out with the players and coaches and got a feel for what the stadium and school look like.”
Calhoun committed to Alabama State in November. He had offers from Savannah State and Western Carolina.
Calhoun said he believes he can start his freshman year.
“If I come in with the right mindset and work hard I should be able to be on the line,” he said.
Calhoun anticipates sliding over to tackle when he competes at the next level.

Banneker RB valued by smaller colleges
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Banneker running back Alfred Moreland hadn’t seriously considered a school as small as Virginia Union until he made his official visit to the Richmond, Va., school.
“They said I could come in and play right away, like Jackson State said,” Moreland said. “It kind of moved them up on my list.”
Moreland, who rushed for 1,213 yards and 15 touchdowns for the Trojans (6-4) last season, has scheduled official visits to Grambling on Friday and Eastern Kentucky on Jan. 30, and possibly Jackson State next month.

DE Reuben Faloughi “commits” to UGA
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Defensive end Reuben Faloughi of Evans, Ga., told the AJC that he “committed” to Georgia on Saturday.
The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Faloughi says he will join UGA as a “preferred walk-on,” turning down offers from smaller colleges. He is considered one of the state’s most underrated prospects.
“It has always been my dream to play for Georgia, and we worked it out where it could happen … I’m excited,” Faloughi said.
Faloughi said although he won’t be signing a football scholarship with the Bulldogs, he will be getting academic grants that will “just about make it the same [financial] situation as getting a football scholarship.” He is an Honor Roll student with a 3.9 GPA.
“I’m not that big on titles. It doesn’t matter if I get to play at Georgia as a scholarship player or walk on. It’s only important to me that I get to play for Georgia.”
Faloughi said Furman may offer him later this week. He has attracted interest from several ACC and SEC schools, and remains on many recruiting boards as a scholarship candidate. He could be one of those prospects that gets a flurry of last-minute offers.

Lithia Springs DT commits to Boston College, despite Georgia Tech interest
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Lithia Springs defensive tackle Bryan Davis will accept a scholarship offer from Boston College on Sunday.
The 6-foot-3, 280-pound lineman confirmed his intentions to the AJC on Saturday evening, during his official visit to B.C.
“The people here are great,” Davis said. “I love the atmosphere. Everybody here is friendly and wants you to succeed.”
Though Georgia Tech made a late run at him, Davis said he never felt a connection with the Jackets. Tech talked serious with Davis, but never offered.
“I didn’t feel like they wanted me,” he said. “I felt like they had [another recruit] in mind.
“It’s not that I don’t like Georgia Tech. I just didn’t feel the energy from them.”

Kwame Geathers has football legacy at UGA and South Carolina
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
South Carolina and Georgia appear to be the teams to beat for defensive tackle Kwame Geathers of Carver’s Bay, S.C.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Geathers is one of UGA’s top remaining targets for its 2009 recruiting class, and is in Athens for an official visit this weekend.
Geathers has always been considered to be a player with “unlimited potential,” but he showed that he may be more polished than expected after his stellar performance in a recent high school all-star game. He was nearly unstoppable on the defensive front, winning MVP honors with seven tackles and two sacks
Geathers was scheduled to visit North Carolina last weekend but did not make the trip, his mother told GoGamecocks. She also told the website that he will take a recruiting trip with Central Florida on Jan. 23, and is also working out plans with South Carolina.
What are UGA’s chances of signing Geathers? UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner is a close friend of his family, and older brother Robert Geathers played at UGA.
However, another one of his brothers, Clifton Geathers, committed to UGA but later signed with South Carolina, where he is a current member of the Gamecocks.
