Kwame Geathers has football legacy at UGA and South Carolina
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
South Carolina and Georgia appear to be the teams to beat for defensive tackle Kwame Geathers of Carver’s Bay, S.C.
The 6-foot-6, 310-pound Geathers is one of UGA’s top remaining targets for its 2009 recruiting class, and is in Athens for an official visit this weekend.
Geathers has always been considered to be a player with “unlimited potential,” but he showed that he may be more polished than expected after his stellar performance in a recent high school all-star game. He was nearly unstoppable on the defensive front, winning MVP honors with seven tackles and two sacks
Geathers was scheduled to visit North Carolina last weekend but did not make the trip, his mother told GoGamecocks. She also told the website that he will take a recruiting trip with Central Florida on Jan. 23, and is also working out plans with South Carolina.
What are UGA’s chances of signing Geathers? UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner is a close friend of his family, and older brother Robert Geathers played at UGA.
However, another one of his brothers, Clifton Geathers, committed to UGA but later signed with South Carolina, where he is a current member of the Gamecocks.

Kwame, weigh all the facts and make the decision you feel is right in your heart. UGA is a program on the way up the next four years. SC seems to be a program on the way down. Spurrier won’t be there in two more seasons. I hear the people in South Carolina are getting tired of average teams and will want a coaching change soon. Coach Richt will make you a quality football player and will impart life quality and value to you. We need you and I think UGA would put you on the map and the smooth road to the NFL. You can be a “premier” player at a “premier” school. When you weigh all the facts and look at everything in perspective … It’s UGA!

Kwame, Athens is where you need to be. You could start immediately in the rotation and take over full time by your sophomore year. You could go to SC, be left out on the field all game because your offense can sustain a drive and be looking at a new coach in a year or two. At SC, you could be all conference and still be on a .500 team who gets kicked around at bowl time. Of course, there’s no guarantee they won’t jerk your offer out from underneath you either.

Kwame, it,s like having the choice between a honda and mercedes, sure the honda is reliable, and one of the better cars, but in the end it ain’t the benz! Bottom line S.C. ain’t UGA.

Geathers could also have the opportunity to come in and watch how future NFL guys like Owens & Atkins get the job done on and off the field. Talk about being able to follow in some huge footsteps……..If I was a kid with that kind of talent and potential, I’d love a chance to learn from Jeff & Geno.

He would probably be a nice recruit to bring in. However, unless he is really excited about being a dawg, I hope he goes elsewhere. Surely given the choice between UGA and usc (as opposed to USC out on the other coast) is a fairly obvious choice. If he has difficulty with a decision this easy, I’m somewhat concerned.

Scout.com- UGA ( #4-05, #4-06, #5-08) most of the 08 class has yet to play. UGA fineshed number 2 in 07. I would also add that UF and UT have each had 2 top 5 classes, and Aub. and SC have had some top 10 classes. These are all teams that UGA plays every year in the SEC. UF, UGA, and Aub are the only three of these teams to win the SEC in the last 5 years.

Having a top 5 class in the sec is not that uncommon. In the last 5 years GA-3, Ala.-1, Fla.-2, Tenn.-2, and LSU-2. You really need a top 5 class just to be competitive in the SEC. Fla., Tenn., and Ala. have all had number 1 classes in the last 5 years, and LSU had the number 2 class one year. The SEC has produced the last three NC’s, so I think UGA has done a good job(not as good as UF and LSU) of competing on the field and in recruiting.

There was a post up that wanted to know how many top 5 classes UGA had had in the last 5 years, and how manny top 5 finishes. The writer seemed to think uga was underperforming. The post was taken down for having bad language in it.

Dawg tired, it is a tough decision for him to go where his brother is (SC) or to Georgia. Give him a break.
Kwame, go where you will be happy.

Michael Carvell can we please get an update on how his visit to Athens went?
BobDog I agree, it must be tough to choose between playing close to home with a sibling or going to the school that you know will perform better on the field. Eventually he’ll realize that big brother Robert saw something good with GA and follow in his footsteps.
As for signing class rankings, they don’t mean squat if you don’t have sufficient coaching. Not to suggest anything negative about CMR’s staff, but bringing out the best in these kids and teaching them how to play collectively and not individually is the key. I think CMR and his staff has done a good job of teaching kids this lesson. When I look at some of the NFL rosters and see former UGA players that I didn’t think of as being NFL worthy, I’m amazed.
GO DAWGS!!

Kwame, Come join your brother Jarvis on the line at UCF. The Geathers brothers could be a force lining up next to each other!
We need you!

BobDog - Obviously it is a tough decision for him. That’s why I’m concerned. I’ve been to Columbia. I’ve spent a lot of time in Athens. No comparision.
The state of usc football is not good. I think UGA is much stronger anyway you look at it.
Brother at usc thing. What year is he? How long would they actually be together? I don’t know anything about his brother.
Still, I just don’t see someone having a choice between usc and UGA having trouble deciding. The dofference is night and day. Now, if he grew up a usc fan, I woudl tell him to go there. Otherwise,I am still concerned. It’s about judgment.

Well Kwame just remember this, go where your heart tells you to go. Georgia is overrated. South Carolina is a great school for you during your playing days and when you cannot play anymore the people in Columbis will make sure you are taken care of. Who goes back to Athens Georgia to live and have a career. There is nothing in Athens Georgia to provide a career other than the University. Georgia has seen their days. Their good days are long behind them.

Russell, USC is in Columbia, not Columbis (and that would end in “us”, not “is”), if such a place even exist. That could have been a typo, but to say that UGA’s best days are behind them and USC’s are ahead is just stupid. USC has not won an SEC title, an SEC east title, and not even the “old ball coach” could get them a 10 win season. UGA has won 3 SEC east titles, 2 sec champ., and had 6 10 win seasons in the last 8 years. UGA’s down years of 10-3 or 9-4 are far better than USC’s best years of 8-5 or 7-6. Geathers can pick whatever school he wants to, but UGA is obviously the better program. I could be a little off, maybe you consider going 7-6 and getting stomped in the outback bowl an up year for USC. Just one fact to back up your moronic statement would have been nice.

Kwame, God has given you a talent, and you need to share it with the world an you can do that playing by playing for the Gamecocks. Don’t listen to Big MIKE. All the BMW’s and Mercedes Benz are made in South Carolina. All you gonna find in Georgia is FORD’s and last I heard they’re going out of business bro. But Big MIKE did get something right,… “S.C. ain’t UGA”. Thats right, at South Carolina you can fulfill a longtime dream of playing college football, getting a degree, make an impact at one of the elite up and coming programs in the nation an play other South Carolina commitments like Stephon Gilmore, DeVonte Holloman, Damario Jeffery and Alshon Jeffrey. Want to play on national tv against big teams in big games for four years, play for Spurrier.
