What will Georgia Tech do with final four scholarships?

The fate of Georgia Tech’s four remaining scholarships should become apparent next week.

Dontae Aycock, a 5-foot-10, 215-pound quarterback at Chamberlain in Tampa, is scheduled to take an official visit to Georgia Tech this weekend.

The Jackets have indicated they would like to add a third quarterback to this recruiting class. They already have commitments from Jordan Luallen of Center Grove in Greenwood, Ind., and David Sims of Calhoun County (S.C.).

Aycock, whose brother, Dwight Smith, plays safety for the NFL’s Detroit Lions, has narrowed his choices to Louisville and Tech. The Cardinals are recruiting him as a running back.

If the Jackets don’t get Aycock, they are expected to target Courtney Dalcourt, a 5-foot-11, 205-pound quarterback for Franklin-Simpson in Franklin, Ky.

Tech continues to recruit M.L. King running back/defensive back Joel Kight, who will take a recruiting trip to Ole Miss this weekend.

The Jackets also like 6-6, 285-pound offensive tackle Nolan MacMillan of The Hun School in Princeton, N.J. MacMillan, whose front-runners are Iowa, Tech and Virginia, received an in-home visit from Jackets coach Paul Johnson last week.

I actually like the idea of not using all the scholarships up this year. I know it’s great to get as many as you can, especially when anyone we add now will redshirt (along with 90% of the 09 class). We’re going to be recruiting so few positions next year, it might help to be able to add a couple of schollarship players to add depth to a 2010 class.

Does anyone know, do fewer targets translate into higher success rates because you can really go after a kid? You know, only having to call 10-15 instead of 30-40.

Please offer the best kicker out there. Our special teams stink and we need a kicker far better than Scott Blair. You can’t depend on getting a walk on.

Ditto — I couldn’t agree more. As important as the kicking game is, it’s hard to believe PJ wouldn’t make a serious upgrade. If it takes a scholarship then so be it. Can anyone explain why there is no talk of recruiting a top kicker?

Jacketnation,

It just does not happen the way that you would like. If it was that easy, everyteam would have a great kicker. Fact is most scholarship kickers are beat out by walk-ons. Not just at GT but everywhere. Only about 25-35 kickers get ships each year out of 119 schools….it is because they have all been burnt. Go back at take a look at the last 3-4 years of Rivals top 15 kickers….now of those 45 to 60, find more than 5 that have made a significant impact. Just does not happen. Sorry.

Show me a high school kicker that can kick them out of the end zone, with a 45 yard punt average, and I will show you stats that show it does not translate into college performance.

Except of punting (which he lead the acc with after 7 games), Blair actually got better as the season went on in FG’s and kickoff distance and defense. This is based on ncaa and acc stats, not mine or your opinion. Although punting got worse, he showed during the first 7 games he could do it. Maybe got tired.

We need comp in this area, like any other, in order to push for improvement, and have good back-up. Blair will only get better. Coach J will do the best thing for the team…maybe bring in a ship kicker, maybe not. We also have Anderson and a kid from Calhoun, both of which I have heard are pretty good. Anderson sure looks good in warm-ups.

We will be fine next year.

Heck, leave scott blair on kickoffs but put a different kicker out there. I think he has more tackles on special teams than anyone else.

forget the kicker - we need somebody who can call for a fair catch and actually catch the ball.

if we cannot get somebody like that, then rush nine and play two deep for a fake punt. at least that way we can eliminate some senseless turnovers, and give dwyer a longer field to gain more yards!

If Tech can add 2-3 of these guys it will cap off a fairly good recruiting class, I agree about the kicking situation, but I also agree that the great ones are few and far between. I wish Tech could get a couple of dominating line backers, it seems they usually have great D-lineman, and I like the current guys in the secondary. You look at every team with a great defense and seems to start with great linebackers.

Tokyo jacket— I’m not sure you can carry over scholarships like I think you are suggesting.I think you are allowed a maximum of 25 per year and a total of 85 in school a one time. You can’ give 20 one year and 30 the next.My guess is that CPJ has zeroed in on only 23 this year so he has some for walk-ons, transfers, etc.I don’t think that 23 this year will get us back to the 85 limit.I would like to hear the rationale for 23 since I am only speculating.

Wow, Tech is having a typical horrible recruiting class. Since Johnson is the Savior I thought he’d be able to steal all the top recruits away from Richt? Why can’t he close on a single top notch recruit that UGA wanted? I thought he could part the seas and change the direction of the tides? LOL!!!

Maybe he needs to start showing off his bling. You know, those so homo NON-championship rings they made for themselves? LOL!! Classic!!!

RealityYech never got a date in high school. His life is so boring all he has to do is get on Tech’s blog and run his fat mouth. We beat Ugag in football and then beat them in basketball with our middle of the road team. RealityYech is a fat slob that never will amount to anything.

Our recruiting is going just fine and we will beat Ugag again next year. So go back to watching the wrestlin’ channel you loud mouth hawg.

The only way this is a FAIR recruiting class is if your in RIM sleep and your dreaming. This is not good, sure the 4/5 stars don’t always mean anything and we have never recruited the elite athletes. I hope I am wrong, but Chan Gailey recruited much better his last year and this team has reaped all the benefits. The fact that we are holding 4 scholarships with no names on them is NOT good!

By RealityYech

January 17, 2009 9:20 PM | Link to this

Phaggotnation,

For a Yech fan to joke about not having dates in high school is about as ironic as Spike Lee accusing Clint Eastwood of being racist. Lol!!! Thanks for the laugh!!

Riiiiight, Yech will win again next year based on what exactly? You squeak by the worst defense UGA has had in years. Heck, in some categories in program history. You have the best 3 studs Yech has ever had at one time on D and you still only win by 3, thanks to an unforced Stafford pick 6 and very shoddy officiating. So please, tell us how you’re going to be UGA for the, what, 5th time in the past 20 years? Remind me how you did against that 5 loss SEC team in your own backyard again, I forgot. Oh yeah, the same team that UGA thumped in their own place :)

Maybe you NERDS can convince some third rate WR’s that they should sign with you so they can change positions and be DFBs(down field blockers). Can’t wait til we get you LOSERS in that dump of a stadium and set things right! Beating you LOSERS holds no great accomplishment to us though. It’s like paying for a prostitute and bragging that you got some!

RealityYech, Are you that INSECURE! If this coach can recruit we will compete every year. If he can’t recruit, then it will be one out of every 8 years. The bottom line is that GT is NO football factory, it has players that actually go to school! I was in class with several, so I say this with experience. A calculus class with football players attending. I will submit that you don’t have too many athletes that carry that kind of academic load. SO KISS OFF!

Well let me tell you what we did last year; and and 3 years ago and… GA put 409’ rushing on UGAG THIS PAST SEASON, and beat them in hoops THIS SEASON. It was Vince Dooley day. It was Larry Munson day. It was senior day too. You got to watch us score 45 points and walk out of Sanford and Son stadium with Hedges clinched between out teeth. Th UGAg crowd left so quietly you could hear all the drunks puke in unison.

Our senior day was on Thursday night football and began with a live Salute of three Tech Astronauts orbiting the earth in the space shuttle.

Sugar,…..So you’ve turned to prostitutes. Hey,…deal with it the best you can. But when you wake up in the morning one thing remains the same. We came in to your backyard and beat you down. Just like a bunch of ugag losers to make excuses.

Take it easy on the Tech fans on this blog, everyone that I have ever known that was book smart as it seems all Tech Students are. Have to deal with one common problem, when it comes to common sense they are dumb as a rock. That is the only answer I can come up with as to why after only one win in 8 years they would talk the way they do. It seems you spent all your emotion on UGA and forgot to show up for what was your biggest stage in years.Let me ask you this, when UGA was winning SEC Championships and Playing in BCS bowl games, what ACC Championship games did GT play in and how many BCS games did they get invited to.1 win in 8 years,Set down and shut the hell up.

Cowboy, are you incapable of reading time stamps? Looks to me like Yech boy needlessly antagonized GT fans in a thread where they weren’t even discussing UGA.

Maybe my lack of common sense has me reading the posts backwards…

No wait, Jan 17th 7:50PM is in fact before Jan 17th 8:03PM.

Hmm, guess I needed my engineering degree to figure that out. Not everyone has the book skills we do, so I forgive you.

What you’re not,….you’re not relevant on the national scene. You’re not SEC champion material, nor SEC East leaders. Hell,..you’re not even state champions. You ugag losers don’t realize that people across the country laugh at you when you suggest that you are relevant. You’re not Florida, Ohio State, Oklahoma or Texas. Get over it. On second thought, keep it up. It makes for such easy prey and it’s always good for laughs. EZ Tan came in at a time when UF and UT were in a brief down cycle. You took advantage of that,…but it’s over. Back to the middle of the pack for you wannabees. And now,…it’s your worst nightmare coming true. Coach Johnson has your number,…he gets under your skin,…we celebrate while you silently fume and burn. Take solace in this one fact loser. Your are Clark county champs.

Driver8, what you’ve got coming back is a very inconsistant offense that was totally exposed in its bowl game and a piece of crap defense that is losing the only strength it had in the defensive line. Georgia Tech lost 3 of its past 6 games to end the 2008 season, including two blowouts, and gave up 80 points and 800 yards of offense in its final two games. Yet, to hear Tech fans tell it, you are on some miraculous winning streak and the hottest team in the land. Not only is this kind of mediocrity accepted at Tech, its apparently celebrated. The fact that a 9-4 season “exceeds expectations” speaks volumes doesn’t it? The joke is on you pal. Georgia Tech football is an absolute laughingstock.

Oh, and you can bet that Chicken Bowl game tape will make its way to all of your opponents in the very near future, if it hasn’t already. Les Miles has probably already been on the phone with several opposing head coaches to discuss his successful preparations for the triple option. That’s standard operating procedure in the coaching business. You don’t get bent over by 5 touchdowns in your bowl game and live to tell about it. Good luck in 2009. You’re going to need it.

AJC, I’ve asked you before to keep these clowns off of the blogs and apparently it’s too tough a task for you. With each person posting they are required to enter an email address in addition to the IP address which is unique to them. I don’t come here to read the same old crap from UGA fans who have nothing better to do than to pick fights on a blog. Really? It’s a blog, how cool do you think you are? Do everyone a favor and stay away. I want to read about recruiting news, not to see just how stupid some people can be.

Unless the moderators ban them from the blog then they won’t stop. AJC this is your responsibility.

Huh, You really think that although CPJ has been successful for 20+ years, Les was the first person finally able to “figure him out?” Come on, that’s ridiculous. Did LSU play well? Yes. Did Tech play badly? Yes. That does not mean that CPJ was figured out. First, Tech hasn’t even put close to the entire offense in place. Secondly, what does it mean to figure it out? Did UF or USCe figure out UGA’s offense? Playing poorly in one game does not mean an offense is figured out. Talk about hyperbole.

Hey Censorship, why don’t you look at the UGA blogs? You’ll find plenty of Tech fans over there doing the same thing that you are complaining about. It is an unfortunate by-product of college football. If you want the AJC stop this nonsense you should appeal to the Tech fans as well.

UGA Bloggers, from reading about how bad you think GT is and was, one can only believe that you think your old corn fed boys in Athens laid down for GT. If GT is as bad as you say, how bad is the team they beat in Athens last Nov. As faras LSU goes, they did what the Dawgs couldn’t do. See you in Atlanta next November.

This kid is gonna make some college real happy soon.Somebody better take a better look at his films. Remember we told Jon Abate from Harrison that he was too small and he beat us in tha ACC championship game with 21 tackles. don’t make the same mistake again. Sign GODHIGH.5’7 188 pound RB. bench press 360, squat 560 and runs a 4.48 forty. Quick and very strong. Great vision. He fins the hole and hits it. He is a perfect fit for this team.
