Your opinion of Derrick Favors picking Georgia Tech
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
South Atlanta’s Derrick Favors, the state’s top basketball prospect, announced he will attend Georgia Tech on Wednesday night.
Favors picked Tech over Georgia and N.C. State.
What do you think of his decision? What kind of impact will he have with the Jackets? How much better will they be with him on the court next season?

Just sealed Felton’s fate! So long Felton! After spending so much $$ on the new practice facility and making basketball a point of emphasis, Damon Evans will now turn his attention to getting someone who will win games AND attract the state’s top talent using those tools.
Sorry to say, but Felton’s time is up. First we lose Favors, then Vandy is probably gonna whip us tonight. I know I shouldn’t say it, but this is just too frustrating!

Guess this buys Hewitt another year for sure…suppose he deserves it after locking down Favors. But in all reality, why would any top basketball recruit ever consider Athens as a destination? I mean, Ugay is absolutely irrelevant in the college basketball world and will always be.

Great recruiting coup. Of course he’s one and done, but hopefully this will give the other highly regarded recruits time to develop into a real team. Paul Hewitt needed this. Like Bobby Cremins said when Mark Price came in. “This kid is playing with my paycheck in his teeth.” You know what…It worked. Go Jackets.

The recruiting for this kid may not be over, we’ll wait and see who the new coach at UGA will be come march. He can’t sign until April. Looks like a great recruiting class for tech with Rice and Oliver as well. I know Rice is Glen jr but is the Oliver kid the jr version as well? Lethal Weapon 3 again coming to the flats?

It is great to get him but… I hope it does not disrupt the team chemistry for next year. I hope he is a team player dedicated to winning, not just showcasing his talents for the NBA scouts. Very excited about the other recruits coming in next year plus a more experienced group from this year’s team.

Why get excited when you will only have him for one year. He would have turn pro this year if the rules hadn”t changed. So enjoy him while you can. It is not a great loss for ga. because you need players who are expecting to spend more than one year expanded their game.

Glad he went to Tech. Now we can get us a new coach, and Tech can keep Hewitt for at least another year. Hewitt is no better than Felton, and in the end, Favors will not save his job. He will just prolong the agony for Tech. Favors is one and done, if he doesn’t turn pro prior to going to Tech.

Of course he is one and done, but he will be great to watch next year. However, how well Tech does next year will be directly dependent on how fast a point guard steps up and takes command. Personally, I don’t believe CPH is a good enough coach to develope a point guard or build a team atmosphere. Forget about him teaching team defense.

NO FAVORS TO FELTON! Felton really needed this one as he has missed out consistently on state of Georgia players. I believe this was the final straw in the Bulldog Punch. And my question is “WHY WOULD THE BEST PLAYER IN THE STATE OF GEORGIA TURN DOWN THE STATE UNIVERSITY?” More here than meets the eye - especially with his best friend and former teammate playing for UGA. Congratulations to Tech. i wish them nothing but the best. But this one really smells - and it’s coming from Stegeman! Dr. Thomas Johnson Class of ‘74

Why would the number one player in the state turn down the “state” university? Because the “state U.” SUCKS in BB. Always has, always will. Just look at how many of the Ugag fans on here don’t even know that kids can’t go to the NBA straight out of HS anymore. Totally out of touch.

Great choice Derrick! You made an outstanding choice for a breeding ground to develop before jettisoning off to the NBA. You’ll fit in perfectly with CPH’s offense. While Tech has a fabulous recruiting class, I am still not terribly sanguine considering I think CPH is well over his head. If CPH cannot win with the incoming class, he will have exhausted all possible excuses for Tech keeping him here.
Good luck Derrick, and THWG!

Yes, I’m a Dawg fan. But even with all the talent Hewitt gets, he still underachieves with it. It does not mean UGA will beat Ga. Tech, but Felton does do better with less talent than Hewitt. Look at all the talent Hewitt has gotten over the years…and how many ACC championships does he have?

From what little I have seen about Favors, he has flip-flopped his answers to questions to try and make it look like this has been a competition for his services. It would seem it was Georgia Tech from day one. Good luck to him and I hope he gets out of it what he is wanting but this kid is one and done unless he absolutely flops as a freshman. As for Felton, he got rid of the troublemakers last year (his best players supposedly) and we were the SEC champs so he is doing something right. He has put much more emphasis on education than coaches in the past and I can deal with that. We need to get better in our basketball program but we need to do it with guys who are attending college, not for guys looking for a AAU program beyond high school. Georgia is not known as a one and done school for basketball players…Ga Tech is, no matter how great Techies believe their acedemic reputation to be.

With the first pick in 2010 Draft, the Oklahoma City Thunder select … Derrick Favors, of Georgia Tech!
If Hewitt is planning on young Mr. Favors being there beyond the 2009-10 season and is targeting his recruiting as to such, he is mistaken and will only dig a hole deeper, a chasm created by the one-and-dones (you know, like Tech at the line for the front end of a one-and-one) of Mr. Crittenton and Mr. Young. I’d almost rather not have Mr. Favors come to Tech, rather than see him play a year of .500 basketball on The Flats before bolting for the NBA.

Who can blame him for his decision to go to Tech? It would be quite hard for him to score very much in Athens when we can’t distribute the ball, get the ball up the court, or even throw damn ball in without a turnover. The reality also is the ACC usually has better basketball while the SEC usually has better football. Yes, Nerds, you did win this year, so that means you can pick an extra booger and munch on it. As a 36 year season ticket holder for Georgia basketbsll, you may assume correctly when I say I’m past fed up !! Where the hell are you now, Adams ? Still trying to figure a way to erase Vince Dooley’s accomplishments in Athens ?

Tech got beat by 14 last night by a team of kids that are going to Duke for an education, and to play big time college hoops. Not to use Duke as a stepping stone to the NBA for one year. It’s really a totally different philosophy then Tech is now committed to. I know Duke has had a few players leave early, but not as many as Tech.
Personally, I’d rather see a team of Scheyer’s, Singler’s, Henderson’s and Zoubec’s than a Derrick Favor’s one and done type kid. And give me a Mark Price over Kenny Anderson any day of the week.
By the way, Price was there last night, watching the futility of the Jackets at the free throw line continue. He must be sitting there thinking….Holy Crap! These kids can not shoot as they air ball a free throw for a national audience on ESPN. Embarrassing.
Maybe Hewitt can do something with this recruiting class. Unfortunately, I think I know the answer to that question.

Most of you on here have it backwards. Don’t blame Favors or GT for a one-and-done year. It’s the system that allows it. Until you get the NBA and NCAA to quit allowing these players in after one year this is what you will get on a consistent basis.
In baseball you go after your high school year or 3rd college year. Baseball has it right. Basketball has it wrong. Favors will 100% leave after one year no question but don’t blame him or GT. If GT wants the top players then this is the game they have to play. Hewitt said this exact same thing and he doesn’t like the system but is playing the game within the system because he has no other choice.
Rock on…….

Tech should have the Peach State version of the FAB 5. Three electrifying players from the Metro area, along with a physical specimen from South Georgia, GT is going to return to the Final Four. Tech will have a true point guard that will stay for a couple years Udofia, a pure shooter Rice Jr., a Kevin Garnett type of player Favors. Mix it in with the rest of the players returning to Tech and you have a championship calibur team.

He ruined the Wolfpack’s chemistry last year. He was all about JJ. Need I say there’s no JJ in team. If I were a college coach, I would steer clear of these one and done guys.

I am frustrated by the “one and done” situation but it’s not the college coaches or players fault. Baseball has it right… go pro straight from high school or play in college for at least three years.
Of course, NBA fans have some blame. Paying big money to watch guys who haven’t even mastered the fundamantals of basketball. Critt couldn’t even run an ACC offense in spite of being a great talent. Not me.
