Branden Smith reflects on UGA DB Asher Allen turning pro

Branden Smith, the state’s No. 1 prospect who has committed to Georgia, said he has mixed emotions about UGA cornerback Asher Allen declaring for the NFL draft.

“First, I am happy for Asher because I know he worked very hard to put himself in a position to play in the NFL,” Smith said.

“For my own selfish reasons, I hate to see the guy [Allen] leave Georgia because I looked forward to learning under him next year. He is a great player, and a great leader, and you can learn a lot from people like him.”

However, there is also a positive side to the situation for Smith. He was already being counted on heavily by UGA’s coaches to contribute next season. With Allen’s departure, Smith’s chances to make an instant impact have greatly increased.

“I’m doing everything I can to get ready for college,” Smith said. “I keep asking [defensive coordinator Willie Martinez] for a playbook, and he keeps telling they can’t give it to me until after signing day.”

Smith, the defensive back from Booker T. Washington, picked UGA over Alabama, Florida and Florida State.

1st, I love reading about how BS is chomping at the bit to get his playbook and get started on his career as a Dawg. Best of luck Branden.

Branden, come on in , keep your nose clean, get in the weight room, study that playbook, and be prepared to learn lockdown cornerback play without penalties. That is something Asher never could learn to do, but is absolutely essential.

I am all for a player going to the next level to better their future, but it seems to me that UGA players are leaving for their own selfish reasons. I think Asher is a great kid, but I dont think he is ready for the NFL. I am not sure who was giving him his advice. He is great in run coverage but he cant play off receivers in the NFL like he did here. NFL teams look for shut down guys. Another year at Georgia would have helped him tremendously. It’s amazing how all Florida players are returning and all of Georgia players are getting the heck out of dodge. Again we will have a lot of young kids playing next year.

I would like to add to what dawgfan1911 discussed. Why is it that the other programs top players are stayting put, even other progrmas All-Americans are comming back…ours are jumping ship….the coaches stay put even though they are offered twice the money at other schools…most coaches I know want to be head coach and will move around to different progrmans to progress up the ladder…ours stay put?I’m just wondering why?

Greg Reid … please call UGA. This opens up a great place for you. BS and GR would be a great tandem at corners. Asher Allen was an on and off player who played too losely with the pass. I think we can do better. I’m tired of receivers being wide open on third and 15 and third and 18 and nobody in their general vicinity. We need some “lockdowns”. BS and GR are the real deal. Greg Reid … please call UGA today!!!!

Look, I’m sad to see him go to. One part because I love to see players graduate and get that degree. Another is because I hate to lose a talented player earlier then we could. But to you people saying, “awe shucks he ain’t that good” you are WRONG. Allen and Curran are almost the only reason our D stops anyone. All year long I said they were the best 2 players on D we had. Good luck to you Asher, you should have a fine career.

Shut up fools, before you embarrass yourselves further….”UGA players are leaving for their own selfish reasons” For whose reasons should they be leaving, yours? They do not exist, nor do they play for your personal entertainment. They are doing what any rational person does with their life, which is pursue opportunities afforded to them with imperfect information and uncertainty. Also, these “other players” at “other schools” who are staying are doing so because they would go in later rounds, if at all. So, get over yourselves and go back to your own crummy lives and crummy jobs and stop moralizing about who is being selfish — it is you who are selfishly whining about these players not serving your own interest.

First, Asher good luck in the NFL. Thanks for representing UGA for the past three years. Second, who hell are you people disparaging the kid for moving on with his life and taking it to the next level. Same ones that ripped Paul Oliver for not making the grade and missing his senior year (plays on Sundays now, his life long dream, congrats for getting there Paul). I was mixed about whether or not Stafford and Moreno were ready for the NFL until I saw their press conference. “Life long dream… preparing myself to get to the next level…” were the words thrown around. First round draft picks people. Not maybe but sure fire. Even if you guys don’t think Moreno has the all the skill sets to make it, he definitely has the desire and motivation. Enough money to come back and get their degrees unless they invest with Madoff.

As for the coaches staying? Who got offered what? Garner was offered a lateral position on UT’s unproven staff. Sure more money but money isn’t everything in life (ask the parachuting pilot just arrested). Searles, same thing. Auburn didn’t offer anything he didn’t already have. Plus these coaches ahve kids in school they won’t just up and run off to make a lateral move to an unproven new coach at struggling programs.

Adults who consume their time pontificating about what college students choose to do with their own careers and lives — clearly need to re-assess their own lives and place in the world. You are not entitled to have these players conveniently play and perform for your own giggles. They (players) get a benefit — education and opportunity to display their skills — and the university gets it’s benefit (bowl/BCS dollars, television contract dollars, gate receipts, merchandising, etc.,). The “fans” are not owed anything here, apart from a seat that they purchase when the buy a ticket and they certainly do not get a vote in what other people choose to do with their life — be it stay for 5 years or leave after 3. You have no interest or concern in these players lives apart from whatever vicarious satisfaction you derive from THEIR achievements/victories on the field — so get over it. None of you are risking life and limb on Saturdays, or throughout the Spring and Fall, so you don’t get a vote in what these kids choose to do. Go figure out how manage your own life, if you figure that out both you and the rest of us will all be better for it.

Good luck Asher.

As far as I’m concerned this is just another reason for top prospects to come to UGA. Yes, we lost 3 big time play makers, but that opens up positions for the next wave of playmakers to make a statement and eventually earn a spot in the NFL. (How many former UGA players are active on NFL rosters? It has got to be around 40 now.)

The last time I checked UGA was still winning football games before Stafford, Moreno, and Allen got there and they will still win them after they are gone. Kudos gentlemen and good luck, I appreciate all your hard work and wish you all success careers.

Success breeds success!

To Morons all of you -

You are exactly right. I am as big a UGA fan as there is but you guys are the ones being selfish. You don’t know the kids background. His family may need the money and it wasnt that he didnt want to stay it was that he had to leave. The reason you go to college is to grow, mature, and find a job to support you and your family in the future. Is Asher ready - maybe. Would another year help him - I think so, but his personal life is what he needs to focus on, not whether you people who live your life through UGA football will get to see UGA possibly have a great season. Football is a great sport and there is an argument for enjoying it as a fan and palying it as a player but there are more important things in life than whether UGA wins 10 games or 14 games. Best of luck Asher and thanks for your leadership while you were here.

Adam….very well said. I was slightly taken aback when I read he was going to the NFL for his own selfish reason when some of these fans think he should stay for their own selfish reason. Some of you need to get a grip and not get so upset over teh decision of college football player. He has to do what is best for him and he obviously thinks this is it. Instead of questioning a kid who gave you guys 3 years to UGA and represented the univerity well, support him. That is all.

“Why is it that the other programs top players are stayting put, even other progrmas All-Americans are comming back…ours are jumping ship…”

TexasDawg, it really just only seems that way because we haven’t had many players in the past few years that have been good enough to be taken in the first round. The last time something like this happened was 2005. Every top school goes through this, maybe not this year, but if you read the ESPN headlines, a lot of underclassmen from a lot of schools are bolting to the NFL. Michael Crabtree, Brandon LaFell, LeSean McCoy, Beanie Wells, Andre Smith, Glen Coffee, the list goes on and on. We just happened to have more than one of these top players this year.

Ok Braden I have GREAT news. I have confiscated a copy of the Bulldog playbook. I will now post on this blog the plays from the official playbook that will directly affect you next August. Play#1) find the opponents best wide receiver and cover him like white on rice. Play#2) catch our opponents punt/kickoff and run directly to our goal line for six. Glad I could help. Welcome to UGA and best of luck to Asher.

Whew, some of us really are selfish! Man, I wish all 3 of our guys the best in NFL! I hate to lose 3 outstanding young men who represented all of us “fans” so well over the past 3 years. I am a Tucker alum and still keep in touch with some of the former Tucker staff (now at PTR). I understand Allen is a great kid, and I hope to see him, Stafford and Moreno on the sideline at UGA games in the future. My only regret is that I will always wonder what it would have been like to see Knowshon run behind next years’ o-line, if it is as improved as I expect it to be. Adam, nice comments….God Bless everone, and good night…

With one less CB and an extra scholarship available, the Dawgs ought to go hard after the Thomas kid from Fitzgerald that committed to Tech. He was stamped out of the cornerback mold.

Branden,

Did it ever occur to you that Willie Martinez really doesn’t want you to see his playbook because it is the same one used by other pop warner coaches?

Go to www.defenseforidiots.com to get your copy. But don’t expect him to be able to explain it during your 3 years at UGA. If he can keep you guessing, you’ll end up think he’s more knowledgable than he really is.

I met Asher Allen for the first time in 2006 during christmas time at his home in Tucker,Ga; discovered that he is my cousin on my father side. I watched my cousin’s highlights and video’s his father had of him… All I can say is I love him and I wish my cousin the best. I’m super proud of him. He is all over the news and in the highlights of all conversation. He made a wonderful decision and I know he will make it.
