Tucker’s Jonathan Davis has “no hard feelings” against Spurrier, South Carolina

Tucker’s Jonathan Davis told the AJC on Monday night that he has “no hard feelings” toward South Carolina.

Davis committed to South Carolina last month, but the Gamecocks rescinded the scholarship offer on Friday.

“I have no hard feelings toward South Carolina, Coach [Steve] Spurrier, or anybody about what happened … I have moved forward,” Davis said.

“I’m a person of faith, and I’ve been praying a lot about [the situation]. I know that when God closes one door, he opens another one.

“I believe that God has bigger plans for me. It may be at a bigger school than South Carolina or it may not. But I know that wherever God places me, it will be where I belong for the next stage of my life. I’ll be there because I’m supposed to be there.”

Davis said he never saw it coming from South Carolina. He scrambled to take an official visit last weekend to Alabama-Birmingham, which is his only current major-college offer. Tucker coach Franklin Stephens, who stated that South Carolina “was no longer welcome” on his campus after speaking with Spurrier on Sunday, has been calling schools the last few days.

“Recruiting is a business, and I understand South Carolina has to do what they feel is best for the program,” Davis said. “I appreciate their consideration, that they gave me a look.”

South Carolina first told Davis his offer was withdrawn because it “needed to recruit cornerbacks” and Davis was projected to play safety. When Stephens talked Spurrier on Sunday, he said Spurrier accepted blame and said it was the result of confusion among his assistants. The Charleston Post and Courier reported that ex-South Carolina assistant Ron Cooper was told “not to offer” Davis, but did anyways.

When Davis committed to South Carolina on Dec. 17, he said he was congratulated over the phone first by Cooper, and then by Spurrier. “His [Spurrier’s] exact words were ‘I’m glad you want to become a Gamecock, and I can’t wait for you to get here. I feel like if you work hard enough, you’ll have a chance to help us immediately.’” Cooper took a job with LSU last week, and shortly thereafter Davis got the jolting news from South Carolina.

Does Davis feel like Spurrier owes him an apology? “No sir, I don’t feel that way about anybody at South Carolina. Actually, I’m thankful they [South Carolina] called me when they did and broke it off … I know it’s late in recruiting, but by letting me know then, it still gives us a little time to find another school. What would’ve been very disappointing would’ve been to sign with South Carolina, get up there next year, and then not get a chance to play because none of the [remaining] coaches wanted me there in the first place. So it’s better we ended things this way. I still have time.”

Before committing to South Carolina, Davis said he had also considered offers from Georgia Tech, Boston College, Central Florida, Oklahoma State, UAB, and Louisville. On Monday, only UAB still had an offer on the table, with Davis also waiting to hear back from Central Florida.

“I’m fine, everything is going to work out great,” Davis said. “It’s all in God’s hands, and those are some good hands to be in.”

Banneker’s Lartey lining up official visits

Banneker’s Emmanuel Lartey probably won’t announce his decision until National Signing Day on Feb. 4.

Lartey has not taken an official visit, but will take at least three this month — to West Virginia on Jan. 16, South Carolina State on Jan. 23 and Mississippi State on Jan. 30. The 5-11, 171-pound defensive back also plans on visiting Arkansas, but a date has not been set.

“I’m not leaning toward any team right now,” Lartey said Sunday night. “I just want to take my visists before making any decisions.”

Carver DB Darren Myles eliminates Georgia Tech from consideration

Carver-Atlanta safety Darren Myles, one of the state’s top uncommitted prospects, said he is no longer considering Georgia Tech.

“I don’t want to be that close to home,” the 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior said. After a December meeting with Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson, Myles told the AJC he would schedule an official visit with Tech sometime in January.

“I’m going to see what other schools have to offer,” he said.

Myles returned from an official visit to Alabama this weekend. He denied rumors that he was leaning heavily toward the Crimson Tide over LSU.

“It went well,” he said. “I didn’t commit, but I got to meet coach [Nick] Saban and he told me they were willing to wait on my decision.”

With dozens of offers, Myles said he will wait until Signing Day before making a decision. He has taken official visits to Alabama, LSU and Purdue. He has an official visit scheduled for Ohio State next weekend.

Carver-Columbus OL says UCLA is “just too far from home” and commits to UAB

Despite his commitment to Alabama-Birmingham, Carver-Columbus offensive lineman Chris Hubbard is still keeping his options open.

The 6-foot-3, 250-pound guard committed this weekend after an official visit, but he is still taking trips to Middle Tennessee, Massachusetts and Mississippi State.

“I just want to make sure if anything falls down with UAB I have other schools to fall back on,” he said.

Hubbard said UAB coach Corey Barlow told him he didn’t have to take his other visits but could if he wanted to.

“I think I found a home at UAB,” he said. “Its engineering program is one of the highest ranked in the country and that is a field I want to go into.”

Hubbard made an official visit to UCLA in October where he saw pop stars Chris Brown and Rihanna.

“UCLA is just too far from home,” he said.

Tift County DE Shayon Green says yes to Miami, no to Georgia Tech

Tift County defensive end Shayon Green, who committed to Purdue last summer, became a late-season recruiting target for Georgia Tech and Miami in December.

The 6-foot-2, 230-pound Green, who remains committed to the Boilermakers, will take a visit to Miami on Jan. 23 after being offered by the Hurricanes.

But he declined an invitation from Georgia Tech to take an official visit and discuss the possibility of an offer from the Jackets.

“Not that Georgia Tech offered, but they did want to talk about recruiting him further and set up an official visit,” Tift County coach Jay Wells said. “I think [Tech] was very up front. They told him they didn’t want to waste his time or their time.

“Shayon told him he wasn’t interested. He told them he was interested in Purdue.”

Wells said Green has decided to see the Miami program in person prior to national signing day on Feb. 4.

“He seems to be very firm in his commitment to Purdue,” Wells said. “But Miami offered him, and I think he must have a little bit of interest because he plans to take an official visit there.”

Lassiter TE confirms Auburn, cancels Alabama and Tennessee

The recruiting drama is over with Lassiter’s Philip Lutzenkirchen, who is back where he started with a commitment to Auburn.

Lutzenkirchen sat down with new Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn last weekend. It was an unofficial visit just to watch film, but apparently Lutzenkirchen saw enough to reaffirm his commitment to the Tigers.

He indicated via text message Monday night that he will remain with Auburn and cancel plans for official visits to Tennessee and Alabama.

Will Georgia Tech offer before Lithia Springs DL commits to Boston College?

Lithia Springs DT Bryan Davis said he is leaning toward committing to Boston College during his official visit to the ACC school this weekend.

“I think I’m going to commit when I get there and get a good look at the place,” Davis said. “We’re leaving Friday; everything is depending on me being admitted to the school, but I should have no problem getting in.”

Davis, a 6-3, 280-pounder, has an offer from Georgia Southern and expects Georgia Tech and Auburn to offer by this weekend. He’s considering visits to Tech and Auburn, but likes Boston College despite the firing of Eagles coach Jeff Jagodzinski last week.

“If I wasn’t playing football, I’d still want to go to the school,” Davis said. “I feel like that’s the right fit for me.”

Georgia Tech continues flirting with Tennessee RB

Wesley Tate, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound running back for Pope John Paul II High in Hendersonville, Tenn., remains in the mix for one of Georgia Tech’s remaining scholarships.

Tate, who rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 20 touchdowns during his senior season, is focused on Georgia Tech, Miami (Ohio), Purdue and Vanderbilt.

His recruiting coach at Tech is co-offensive line coach Todd Spencer. Tate is tentatively scheduled visit the Tech campus on Jan. 23.

“I didn’t get a chance to go a game this past season at Georgia Tech,” Tate told JacketsOnline.com. “I’ve been talking to coach Spencer and I feel good about Georgia Tech.

“I’ve only been there for an AAU basketball tournament and, from what I can tell, the facilities are pretty nice.”

Tate’s current front-runner is Vanderbilt.

Starr’s Mill’s Roberts picks Middle Tennessee

Starr’s Mill linebacker Stephen Roberts Jr. had a family connection to Middle Tennessee. His father, Stephen Sr., is acquaintances with a Blue Raiders assistant coach.

But Roberts said the main reason he committed to Middle Tennessee and turned down a visit to Indiana of the Big 10 is because he doesn’t want to be that far away from home.

“I wanted to do what was best for me and my family,” said Stephen Jr. “This was what was best.”

Roberts said he wasn’t interested in Middle Tennessee until the school began recruiting him, and when he took his visit to the Murfreesboro, Tenn., school he liked what he saw.

He doesn’t have other visits planned, and cancelled a scheduled visit to Indiana.
