‘Happy ending’ for injured Tucker DL who commits to N.C. State

Much appeared lost on the second play of the season for Tucker defensive tackle Deion Roberson.

However, by verbally committing to accept a football scholarship with North Carolina State on Sunday, the 6-foot-3, 258-pounder, who had to watch from the sidelines as Tucker won the Class AAAA championship, capped his uncertain senior season on an upbeat note.

“It’s a happy ending for Deion, and we’re excited for him,” Tucker coach Franklin Stephens said. “There are certain schools that offered him last year in the early spring, and they stuck by him despite his injury. I think N.C. State got an outstanding player, a guy who would’ve been much higher in the recruiting rankings if not for the injury. He is so big and athletic, guys like him are hard to find.”

Roberson missed the season when he suffered a severe dislocation on his left ankle in a 26-12 season-opening win at Brunswick on Aug. 29. The ankle was trapped as a teammate was blocked onto his left leg. He is still rehabbing the ankle.

Despite the injury, Roberson still received interest from major programs, including N.C. State, Louisville, Wake Forest, West Virginia, Maryland, Michigan State, Iowa State and East Carolina. Georgia has kept in contact with Roberson but has not offered.

Georgia Tech target Joel Kight “wants to play in SEC”

M.L. King linebacker Joel Kight might make a decision soon on where he’ll play college football, his high school coach suggested this week.

“I think it may come down to that visit to Ole Miss,” said Corey Jarvis, referring to Kight’s official visit to Oxford on Jan. 16. “He really likes Ole Miss. He really wants to play in the SEC.”

Kight has made visits to Georgia Tech, Oklahoma State and Boston College, and said he was impressed by all the schools.

After being told in late December that he risks having his scholarship offer withdrawn unless he makes a quick decision to commit to Georgia Tech, the Jackets now appear content to give Kight additional time to decide on a college.

The All-State linebacker (5-10, 210) led MLK in tackles with 114 in 11 games. He also has offers from Connecticut, Duke, Miami-Ohio, Indiana and Arizona State.

South Carolina reportedly yanks scholarship from Tucker’s Jonathan Davis

You’ve heard of football prospects de-committing from colleges? Well, what about colleges de-committing from prospects?

That may have been the case with Tucker’s Jonathan Davis. He committed to South Carolina, but South Carolina has withdrawn its scholarship offer, according to GoGamecocks.

If true, it is the most disheartening thing that can happen in recruiting.

“I really don’t know why, they just called and broke it off,” Davis told the website. “They called my coach today. I haven’t talked to any USC coaches.”

“I really don’t know what to think about it. I was committed to those guys and that’s all I was thinking about. They told my coach there were looking for more cornerbacks because they had more safeties come in and they were focusing on cornerbacks.”

The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis told the website he has no other options at the current time. Georgia Tech desperately wanted Davis and offered a scholarship earlier this fall, but moved on after Davis said he needed more time to check out his options.

More details to come.

Will Northside DB K.J. Morton be one of UGA surprises on signing day?

Every year in recruiting, there are surprises on signing day.

Could Georgia’s surprise for this year be Northside-Warner Robins cornerback K.J. Morton? Morton may be one of the state’s best-kept secrets, as he is not mentioned in any of the mainstream recruiting circles.

But UGA is aware of Morton after spending so much time with his Northside teammate, Abry Jones, who has committed to Georgia.

Morton told the AJC that he could get scholarship offers from Georgia and Kentucky if he improves his test scores.

“I’ve been in touch with [UGA assistant John Lilly], and he told me I’m a real good ballplayer,” the 5-foot-10, 165-pound speedster said. “He is just waiting on my ACT scores.”

With Kentucky, Morton had the opportunity to meet the coaching staff and watch the team’s bowl practice during his official visit in December.

“[Kentucky assistant Randy Sanders] asked if I wanted to go to school there, and I told him I did,” he said. “They are also waiting on my ACT results.”

Morton said if Kentucky offers he will commit. “They have been with me throughout the whole thing. I like the coaches and had a good time with the players.”

Branden Smith keeping “secrets” with Georgia’s Mark Richt

When Booker T. Washington cornerback Branden Smith committed to Georgia on national TV during last Sunday’s Under Armour all-start game, Bulldogs coaches didn’t need to watch. He later admitted he broke the news to coach Mark Richt during his Dec. 12 official visit.

“It was a secret between us,” Smith said. “I had told [Richt] before I left town that I had an early Christmas present for him.”

Nevertheless, Smith said he talked to Richt and defensive coordinator Willie Martinez after the game and asked for a playbook to study.

“They said I had to wait until after signing day to get that,” he said.

Smith picked Georgia over Alabama, along with Florida and Florida State.

Blessed Trinity OL surprised with new offer

No sooner had Blessed Trinity lineman Matt Crisafi returned Sunday from his official visit to Samford, when the phone rang. It was Furman defensive line coach Roberto Pinilla, offering him a scholarship without even an official visit there.

Now the quandary: Samford had just catapulted itself to the top of Crisafi’s consideration by impressing him so in 48 hours. Then again, Furman has such notoriety, The Georgia 150 player pointed out.

“I’ve got to sit down and talk with my family,” said Crisafi, who further complicated things by changing plans this week to visit William & Mary, instead of Middle Tennessee State, before Gardner-Webb on Jan. 23. “This whole process has been not a game, but kind of like fitting together pieces of a puzzle.”

Stanford offers Union Grove junior DE Williams

Union Grove junior Anthony Williams landed his first scholarship offer last week after Stanford invited the 6-foot-4, 230-pound defensive end to play football for the Cardinal.

“I’m very excited,” Williams said. “The recruiter was very easy to talk to. It’s pretty far from home, but still an option. I wouldn’t mind playing for them.”

He continues to be recruited by Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia Tech and West Virginia.

Williams plans to attend junior day at Tech later this month. His second offer will likely come from the Jackets.

“I’m going [to Tech] on the 31st and am hoping for a written offer,” he said. “I want to say they have given me a verbal, but I want to be safe to say that until after I get the written offer.”

Gainesville WR Jones to attend Florida’s trophy presentation

Gainesville junior receiver Tail-er Jones has been invited to attend today’s national championship trophy presentation at Florida.

Jones, who holds a dozen scholarship offers from programs such as Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Miami, Ole Miss, Ohio State and South Carolina, hopes the Gators will offer him following this afternoon’s ceremony.

“An offer from Florida would be great,” Jones said. “I’ll just have to wait and see.”

Jones and his father began driving to Gainesville, Fla. late Saturday.
