WR Marlon Brown feeling pressure to stay in Tennessee

Marlon Brown, the Georgia Bulldogs’ No. 1 target at wide receiver, is from Tennessee. And it seems like it will be a challenge for any school to get him out of Tennessee.

The 6-foot-5 Brown has narrowed his choices to Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio State, and Florida. He does not have any college visits this weekend and said he is scheduled to meet with UGA coaches on Saturday.

Tennessee showed how vital Brown is to the future of the program, when new coach Lane Kiffin left his first press conference to catch a flight to meet with Brown later that night. “Yeah, that definitely got my attention,” Brown said.

Tennessee also holds the prime spot on Brown’s recruiting schedule. He will make his official visit to Knoxville on Jan. 30, which allows the Volunteers to make the last impression before the Feb. 4 signing day.

Perhaps most daunting for the other colleges competing for Brown is the mounting pressure he is feeling from his friends and neighbors to stay in Tennessee.

“Yeah, there’s a lot of people who watched me play football growing up who would like to see me play for Tennessee,” Brown told the AJC. “I hear about Tennessee all day, every day. There would be some unhappy people around here if I left the state to play ball. But I know I’ve got to do what’s best for me and my future. It may be Tennessee, or it may be one of the other schools. I don’t know yet.”

Brown said he has no favorites and plans to announce his decision on signing day.

Marlon Brown - Let me ask you this question. Who, in Knoxville is going to be throwing you the football? We have two Elite 11 QB’s enrolling at UGA. You KNOW they’ll get you the rock. I don’t see why this is even a decision. There is only one choice you can make, come to UGA.

Tebow is most definetly gone next year and OSU loses all their bowl games.

UGA! UGA! UGA!

Wait till your standing on the sideline when the trumpet fires up in the south east corner & they start playing Herschel & Munson on the big screen. Chill bumps will break out up & down your arms & you will know in your heart that you made the right choice

Marlon Brown appears to be intelligent. He knows he’s good. He will decide on what option gets him the best training to prepare for the NFL. Sorry UGA fans but Tennessee is the place look at the nfl coaches, even Florida with all of its exposure is better then UGA. Your hurting right now.

UGA fans dont get so cocky you have no proven quarterbacks line up. Look at how low Tennessee fell due to poor quarterback play. Your defensive coordinator can stop anyone.

If this vol fan can make a fair assesment UGA looks a lot like UT did about 3 or 4 years ago. A good team worthy of 9 maybe 10 wins and then bam a bad season will come by and there goes martinez. Then another bad season there goes bobo or richt.

If Brown is as smart as he seems UGA should not be on his list past this weekend.

UGA is the best place for this young man. Ut hired a bunch of guys who got canned @ schools such as NC State (MK), ole miss (EO), and the raiders (LK). Plus, ut has had to come to the state of Georgia always to get their best players. Its about time we get a couple from the very few that come out of tennessee.

Lanetrain - No proven QB’s? We ain’t UT son…. We’ve got this, don’t worry.

You know the best thing to ever come out of Knoxville?

Marlon, you are as vital to UGA as you are to UT. At UGA you will have another world class receiver to keep coverage at one on one, and you will have an Elite 11 QB throwing to you. Also the OL is now experienced and deep. Come on to UGA and I guarantee your future will be brighter than at UT.

And yes, I believe you are right. I believe our defensive coordinator can stop anybody. When we have sufficient D line play. Beatdown in Knoxville this year baby…

Looks to me UT is buying a staff that can recruit. In college if you have recruited a lot of good players any coach can win. Look at Fulmer in the 90’s and earlier this decade.

Marlon Brown will be # 1 pass threat at UT next year and get plenty of early playing time not behind someone.

also how successful can he be at UGA when there is no way you guys can beat FLORIDA on a consistent basis at that cocktail party whoopin you guys get whooped at each year.

Lane, What has ut done against uf recently? We have waaay better QBs than you guys. Come on, it was a frickin riot watching ut play football this year. I was constantly laughing @ crompton. Yes, UGA will beat ut arse this year, AGAIN!

He’s staying at Tenn. UGA cant win with the current coach(you know that already) Brown senses a change at Georgia could come during his time.

Dawgs D will be fine. We continue to recruit well. When Tebow leaves we’ll win the East for a couple of years and then it will flip flop back and forth between UF & UGA. Lane Kiffin will wish he Al Davis telling him what to do by November…

LaneTrain, you talk about a beating we take from Florida every year. What do you all do against Florida? UT is just hoping for greatness. All you have on D is Eric Berry and he takes as many cheap shots as he can on people in the secondary. Vols are terrible and Marlon will not get the ball because every time is going to blow through your O line and put your QB on his rear end!

LaneTrain is an idiot. If you want to get on here and talk about Tennessee, then fine. If you want to bash on UGA, fine. At least do it intelligently. Tell me where you’re recruiting has been. Where is your quarterback? Ainge underachieved, Schafer was worthless, Crompton has no confidence (but all the tools). That is why your program fell. Tennessee has to recruit outside of the state to get a full team of top talent. UGA doesn’t even have to leave the state if it doesn’t want to. We have Joe Cox, Logan Gray, and two incoming QB’s. You are an idiot. UGA will have a better record next year than this year and against an even harder schedule.

Lane and Vols, easy with the meth guys.

First, when was the last time UT was relevant? The East IS UGA and Florida, period. FYI - besides Orgeron (what a coach he proved to be huh?), who else is UT “buying” that can recruit? Lane is completely unproven. The only head gig he’s had was an absolute flop. Also, Monte is a life-long NFL guy and recent trends have shown how that transition (college to pro’s and vice versa) pans out. Finally, “UGA can’t win with the current coach.” Umm, let’s see here: 82-22 overall. 6-2 in bowl games (2 Sugars). 2 SEC Championships out of 3 appearances and 4 SEC East Championships. My wife, father-n-law, brother-n-law and many friends (all UT grads) beg to differ with you. They’d LOVE to have sniffed the success we have grown accustomed to achieving annually at UGA!

Go Dawgs!!!

Cameron you wouldn’t say Stafford underachieved? Zero SEC championships, Zero SEC East championships. HAHAHA And if Joe Cox was any kind of player they would have had a special package for him this year. He got no time. That should tell you something. Your prospects have accomplished nothing in the NCAA so far so stop acting like they already elite level NCAA players. You are an idiot.

UT is not even the best team is their state, so to think they are on the same level as UGA anf UF is insane. UT will be the 4th or 5th best team in the east

Lane Train,

You talk some smack and considering the state of your program at UT I wouldn’t be saying anything to anybody. You have no QB and your idiot coach isn’t even recruiting one. Kiffin has done nothing as a head coach and will continue to do nothing at UT. If Marlon Brown comes to UT he is wasting all that talent. Once we come into Knoxville and beat your great team again we will be 7-3 against you this decade. You will be 4th in the East at best so sit down and shut up!

By FJDAWG

January 9, 2009 6:47 PM | Link to this

You just lost your QB, your RB, and probably a couple of guys on defense. Having a freshman QB won’t help your cause and I assure you that Lane will coach up whoever is behind center. I have no doubt we will sign the #1-#5 best QB in the 2010 class. We’re going to be stacked. UGA blows.

Did Stafford underachieve? Yeah, probably considering the hype and the fact that he didn’t win any championships. The reason DJ Shockley got time away from David Greene is because he was a change of pace QB. He offered different packages than David Greene did, which is why he got a meaningful series or two. Cox is essentially the same QB as Stafford, just not his good (at least not talent wise). That is why he didn’t see the field, the last thing you need is a QB controversy when you are trying to compete for championships. Are you going to tell me that Mark Sanchez isn’t any good because he didn’t take any time away from John David Booty? Or Lienart from Palmer? Or Mustain from Sanchez? Thought so. And for the record, the argument I was making is that UGA is in no way related to Tenn and their demise. Too much talent still coming in and too good of a coaching staff. And also for the record, I definitely think Tenn is on there way back to compete for the top of the division , SEC, and prob the nation. I think Lane Kiffin did a good job in Oakland (all things considered) and we know he did an awesome job at USC. He is assembling a staff of ace recruiters and has the best defensive coordinator in college football.

NCMtn Dawg, when was the last time GA played in the SEC CG. Seems that The Big Orange were there in ‘07 after kicking Dawg Azz Biatches. You GA fans are worse than The “NO”SU Suckeyes, whining about not being in NC game and didn’t even win the SEC East. Ranked #1 preseason in ‘08 and lose 3 games, that’s really living up to the hype. Go lick your balls like a good dog!

This is a Tennessee/Florida battle with UGA running a very distant third. The kid wants to go to UF, but the pull to stay close to home may be too much for UF to overcome.

By Larry

January 10, 2009 12:03 PM | Link to this

Darius has no idea what he is talking about.

It is a three horse race, with UT, UGA and Ohio State up front.

He likes UT because of location (home state) and the attention Kiffin has paid him.

He likes UGA because of the talent level at the receiver position, the ability to play early, and the coaching staff.

He likes Ohio State because the offense and he has become really good friends with Terrell Pryor.

UF is background noise in the race for this recruit. Expect it to come down to those three schools.

January 10, 2009 12:21 PM | Link to this

UGA is the leader and Tenn is making a hard push. He supposedly likes Ohio State a lot, but always ends comments with “but it is really cold” when talking about them. I honestly think Tenn will lock him up in the end. But, UGA is right there and would love to have him.

Mr. Brown, just immagine Cox would get the deep ball to you while UT will have our Martinez as the D co next year. And when you are looking around, no one within 30 feet from you. That will be an easy job for you. You will experience this scenario when UGA plays UT and you go to UGA cause I heard that UT is hiring our soft Willow for their head defensive football operation.

Well the last time we played in an SEC Championship game was in 2005, which is also the last time we won the whole damn conference. The last time we won the SEC EAST…..2007. Go look at the books Vol fans, I know you don’t want to admit it, but UGA and UT tied for 1st last year and UT won the head-to-head tiebreaker, FACT! Georgia has a 2007 SEC East championship trophy sitting in Butts-Mehre.

That’s great that you played in the 2007 SECC, but do you really want to gloat about that when you haven’t won the conference IN OVER A DECADE! Do you really want to gloat about that when out of the past 4 seasons, 2 of those have been losing campaigns? Get a life. Lane Kiffin’s hiring just set their “program” back another 5 years.

UGA fans take a long look at Mark Richt. If you squint a little you may notice that he’s beginning to look a lot like Phil Fulmer. UGA is on the verge of a long decline that won’t be fixed until Richt is gone. I hate it because I like Richt but he’s showing all the same signs that Fulmer did in his decline including: too nice for his own good, allowing poor assistants to stay employed, gets worked up over gimmicks such as the endzone celebration against UF (hey, I loved that one but you have to admit it was the dumbest move in the history of the rivalry since UF will show that tape to generations of players to fire them up for that game much as UT plays the stupid Munson tape with the hobnail boot thing to fire their players up), off-field incidents getting to be too common, etc. It took way too long but UT finally had enough and put a stop to Fulmer’s ruinous ways. UGA I predict will allow Richt to continue to be mediocre for several more years barring a complete collapse. UGA and UF the only thing that counts in the SECE going forward? Sorry, but it looks like UT and UGA are going in opposite directions and UGA’s direction is the wrong one.

I love it the Dawgs are getting nervous and rightfully so. There is a new sheriff in the SEC and his name is Lane Kiffin. With the staff he has put together it kind of reminds me of Tombstone. Remember that group of ‘Peace’ officers? Wyatt, Doc, and the boys. We’re coming for you Dawgs…….
