Oklahoma State aware of UGA overtures toward Walton FB David Paulsen
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Oklahoma State is aware that Georgia is flirting with one of its top commitments, Walton fullback David Paulsen.
OSU coach Mike Gundy made an in-home visit with Paulsen in Marietta on Wednesday. Georgia wasn’t the main topic of conversation, but it was brought up.
“[Gundy] knows all about Georgia, and that I’m going to visit Georgia,” Paulsen said. “[Gundy] didn’t seem to be too concerned about it. I’m committed to Oklahoma State, and he is counting on it staying that way.”
The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Paulsen is a lifelong Georgia fan, but didn’t have an offer last month when he visited Oklahoma State and later committed. Georgia coach Mark Richt made an in-home visit with Paulsen on Monday and offered a “grayshirt” scholarship. Under those conditions, Paulsen would wait until next January to enroll at UGA, and count toward the following year’s scholarship total.
Paulsen said he will make a recruiting trip to Georgia on Jan. 23 to learn more.

Douglas LB finished switching between Alabama and Auburn
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Douglass linebacker Jonathan Atchison cancelled his official visit to Auburn this weekend.
“I’m solid to Alabama,” the 6-foot-3, 212-pound Atchison said.
Atchison switched his commitment to Alabama from Auburn after the resignation of Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville. Atchison made the change after having a lengthy conversation with Alabama coach Nick Saban.
He was going to make an official visit to Auburn this weekend, but said he will only take his official visit to Alabama next weekend.
When asked if new Auburn coach Gene Chizik contacted him to see if he was still going to take his visit, Atchison replied, “Not that I know.”
Rivals.com ranks Atchison as the 24th best outside linebacker in the country.

Etowah DB commits to Air Force
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Etowah defensive back Jordan Padgett said he will play college football at Air Force after an in-house visit Thursday night from head coach Troy Calhoun.
“Calhoun came to my house and told me I was their No. 1 safety recruit, and they would like to have me,” the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Padgett said. “It’s a good school, and they play in a good conference.”
Padgett said he also was considering Miami-Ohio, Kent State, Louisiana-Monroe and Troy. His teammate, Ishmail White, is committed to Miami-Ohio. Padgett and White were going on an official visit there this weekend.
“I’m not going there anymore,” said Padgett. “I’m going to keep my commitment to Air Force.”
Calhoun said Air Force plans to redshirt Padgett his freshmen year and then making him a starter. He anticipates the Falcons will put him at free safety.
“I need to put on some pounds,” he said. “They want me up to 215.”

UGA meets with All-America DB Greg Reid for three hours
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Greg Reid, the AJC’s all-classification Player of the Year, said he met for three hours with UGA offensive coordinator Mike Bobo on Thursday in Valdosta.
And Reid told the AJC he liked what he heard.
“[Bobo] was a cool guy, and a lot of it was just the normal recruiting talk,” Reid said. “He looked me in the eyes a lot, more than other college coaches do. I think he just really want to let me know that Georgia was very serious about me. I mean, he said they really wanted me badly there.”
Did Bobo’s visit help Georgia’s chances with Reid? “I like everybody just about even. You know, Georgia hasn’t won a national championship since 1980. I know a lot of people around the state would love another national championship for Georgia. And if I went there, I would look forward to bringing one back for all the Georgia fans.”
Reid said Bobo talked a little bit about offense, but said he was being recruited by the Bulldogs primarily at defensive back. “That’s fine with me. I’ll play wherever anybody wants me to play in college. If it gets me on the field where I can help my team, then that’s where I want to play.”
It has been a whirlwind week for the prized prospect from Lowndes. It all started when he backed off his longtime commitment to Florida. Then he won MVP honors at the Under Armour All-America game, which ignited an all-out invasion of Valdosta by college recruiters.
Reid met with Alabama yesterday, and has agreed to take an official visit with the Crimson Tide this weekend. The rest of this month’s travel schedule looks like this: Florida on Jan. 16, Mississippi State on Jan. 23, and Georgia on Jan. 30.
Somewhere in there, Reid might take a recruiting trip to Florida State, which is dispatching its coaches to meet with Reid on Friday before he leaves for Alabama. And then there’s Auburn, which is yet another school trying to get into the sweepstakes.

Westlake LB Dearco Nolan no fan of North Carolina’s recruiting strategy
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Westlake linebacker Dearco Nolan told North Carolina last month that he would accept its scholarship offer, but he has since backed off.
“It was a ‘soft verbal,’” said the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Nolan, who will play outside linebacker/defensive end in college. “They had 29 commitments and can only sign 25. I didn’t want to be in all of that confusion, so I de-committed. I love the program, but I didn’t want to be in all of that. It’s crazy.
“I think when you get up to 25, you should say, ‘we’re done.’”
So, Nolan is “still considering” his options, which incude Auburn and Middle Tennessee State. Middle Tennessee recruiters had an in-home visit with Nolan Wednesday night. Iowa State and Marshall will visit in the coming days.
Nolan’s list of serious suitors also includes North Carolina State, Ole Miss and Jackson State.
He indicated that Iowa State may be the leader. The Cyclones have been after him for quite some time and he says they’ve made him a high priority.
“Iowa State really needs some pass rushers and I was the first name on their board,” said Nolan, who had 11 sacks last season.
He likes Middle Tennessee State, too, and plans an official visit there Jan. 16. He also has Iowa State or Marshall planned for a Jan. 30 visit. He says the stature of the program or the conference it plays in is not the only thing he wants to consider in a college.

Whitefield Academy QB schedules official visits
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Whitefield Academy quarterback Trey Miller’s calendar is booked. The 6-foot, 185-pound Miller has official visits scheduled every weekend in January.
“I’m at Samford right now; I have Memphis or Western Carolina next weekend, Air Force on the 23rd and Navy on the 30th,” he said.
Miller said his top choice is Navy, but he is going to wait to make a decision until he takes all his official visits.
“Navy said I could play quarterback, and they can do a lot for me academically after I graduate,” he said.
Miller threw for more than 1,800 yards and 20 touchdowns his senior year. He also ran for 600 yards and rushed for five touchdowns.
