Etowah DB commits to Air Force

Etowah defensive back Jordan Padgett said he will play college football at Air Force after an in-house visit Thursday night from head coach Troy Calhoun.

“Calhoun came to my house and told me I was their No. 1 safety recruit, and they would like to have me,” the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Padgett said. “It’s a good school, and they play in a good conference.”

Padgett said he also was considering Miami-Ohio, Kent State, Louisiana-Monroe and Troy. His teammate, Ishmail White, is committed to Miami-Ohio. Padgett and White were going on an official visit there this weekend.

“I’m not going there anymore,” said Padgett. “I’m going to keep my commitment to Air Force.”

Calhoun said Air Force plans to redshirt Padgett his freshmen year and then making him a starter. He anticipates the Falcons will put him at free safety.

“I need to put on some pounds,” he said. “They want me up to 215.”

Calhoun did not say that because Air Force does not red shirt anyone. You get 4 years of education and commit to give them 5 years of active duty after your 4 years unless you drop out before your sophmore year, no exceptions. It’s still a sweet deal and phenomenol education.

Actually, CTF is right, but the academies do use their Prep schools as a “redshirt-like” situation. The prep schools assist some kids “on the bubble” to get use to the rigors that the service academies present (academic and military). For athletes, it’s like a redshirt year…perhaps even better because the prep schools have football schedules. Either way, this is a sweet deal. Good luck Jordan!
