Northview junior DL courted by Michigan State, closer to making decision

Michigan State is near offering Northview junior tackle Denzel McCoy a scholarship, Titans coach Jim Showfety confirmed Wednesday.

McCoy said Spartans quarterbacks coach Dave Warner met with his father, Titans assistant Gary McCoy, at Northview this week. Showfety said Warner later told him something like, “It’s pretty much a slam dunk we’re going to make an offer” pending final approval from (head coach Mark Dantonio).

The 6-foot-4, 273-pound McCoy has been recruited heaviest by Maryland, Oregon, Louisiana State, Florida State and Georgia Tech and plans to commit verbally to someone in the next few months.

“The process is going pretty good, but I hope to decide before spring practice,” McCoy said. “I want it off my mind and be able to contribute everything I have in my final season.”

McCoy was the Titans’ second-leading tackler this season, behind linebacker Jarrod Neser, but couldn’t keep Northview from finishing 0-10. Showfety believes McCoy has the skill to help revive Northview next season.

“He’s definitely a player who’ll have a major role in 2009,” Showfety said. “He’s shown great leadership and wants to be a central part of our turnaround. He has all the tools to be a dominant player.”
