Gainesville DL remembers Bobby Petrino’s departure from Falcons
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino’s unexpected departure from the Atlanta Falcons in 2007 still weighs on the mind of Gainesville’s Josh Jackson.
The 6-foot-2, 255-pound defensive lineman is set to take an official visit to Arkansas this weekend.
“The way [Petrino] left the Falcons, you can’t forget that,” Jackson said.
Jackson, who feels that he is close to a scholarship offer from the Razorbacks, is still eager to get a close look at Fayetteville, Ark.
He currently holds offers from Georgia State, Massachusetts, N.C. State, Ole Miss and Toledo.
Jackson plans to visit Toledo on Jan. 16 and Ole Miss two weeks later.
The Rebels are the favorites to land a commitment from Jackson.
“[Ole Miss] did a lot of good things this year,” Jackson said. “And I like what [coach Houston Nutt] did for that program.”
He is being recruited at defensive tackle by Ole Miss.

Lassiter TE Lutzenkirchen meets with new Auburn offensive coordinator
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
The long, wild recruiting ride for Lassiter tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen could lose some turbulence today. New Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn will be in town to speak to the 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end, Lutzenkirchen indicated via text message on Wednesday night.
What does this mean for the Tigers’ soft verbal commitment? Most likely, Lutzenkirchen will finally get some answers as to the direction of the Auburn offense and his role in that system.
Malzahn is one of the innovators of the “Wildcat” offense and a firm user of the spread, which is a big draw for Lutzenkirchen. The Trojans ran the spread this season under first year coach Chip Lindsey, and the star tight end shined with more than 1,000 yards receiving.
With Malzahn’s spread attack, Tulsa was one of the most prolific offenses in the country, leading the nation in yards per game, second in scoring and seventh in passing and rushing.
Lutzenkirchen is still trying to settle on official visit dates to Tennessee and Alabama. Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has visited with the young prospect, and Lutzenkirchen and his family have taken an unofficial visit to Knoxville. He also has been to Florida twice unofficially and Florida State on an official visit.

College decision is academic for Blessed Trinity’s Crisafi
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Blessed Trinity offensive lineman Matt Crisafi has scheduled official visits to Samford on Friday, Middle Tennessee State on Jan. 16 and Gardner-Webb on Jan. 23. But his focus on football is secondary.
More important to him are each college’s business schools, because he considers his college choice more an academic than athletic one.
“The football part is very important, and I have certain requirements with that, but in the end, it’ll come down to which one suits me best academically,” said the 6-foot-3, 304-pound Crisafi, a member of the AJC’s The Georgia 150. “A lot of guys don’t worry as much about academics as I do.
“My goal isn’t to just play three years and get drafted,” he added. “I’m looking for a school that can set up a career for me. This decision is going to last me a lifetime.”
Although he is no longer considering Tulane and Delaware, Crisafi is talking with William and Mary, Furman and Miami-Ohio. He said he might schedule visits there. But academics come first with Crisafi, a GACA All-Star who graded out at 90 percent this season.
“If I have the chance, I’d definitely consider [football beyond college], but I’m not looking for the school promising to send me to the NFL,” he said. “I’m looking for the school that can set me up with a career or a master’s degree.”

Son of former UGA player catches the attention of Bulldogs for 2010
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
One of the state’s top juniors, Buford’s Kolton Houston has caught the attention of UGA.
“[UGA assistant] coach Stacy Searles really likes him, and he is definitely on their radar,” Buford coach Jess Simpson said.
The 6-foot-5, 265-pound defensive tackle/offensive guard, has offers from South Carolina, Vanderbilt and Stanford. His father, Shane Houston, played two years for the Bulldogs in the late 80’s.
“When I first started getting recruited I wanted to go to Georgia because I grew up a Bulldog fan, but as I’m getting looked at by more schools I must say I’m wide open,” Houston said.
Houston said he has recently been in contact with Maryland and feels the Terrapins will be the next to offer.
“He is one of those kids that will be recruited by everyone,” said Simpson.
Simpson said Houston has the frame and athleticism to play on either side of the ball, but Houston said he wants to be on the offensive line.
“There is something about run blocking,” he said. “I love running the ball down the field.”
Houston said he does not have a dream school, but he hopes to receive offers from some of the Big 12 powerhouses like Oklahoma and Texas. He plans to commit this spring.
“I want to get it all over with,” he said.

Georgia Tech’s Paul Johnson visits Gainesville WR
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
One day after visiting commit Will Jackson of Farragut High in Knoxville, Tenn. and prospect Nolan MacMillan of The Hun School in Princeton, N.J., Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson turned his focus toward the 2010 recruiting class when he dropped in on Gainesville junior receiver Tailer Jones earlier today.
“Coach Johnson seems like a great guy,” said Jones, who holds scholarship offers from Arkansas, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Miami, Ole Miss, North Carolina, N.C. State, Ohio State, South Carolina and West Virginia.
“He comes across as real low key with no hype. He doesn’t try to overexert himself. He acts like he is.”
Johnson was joined by assistant coach Jeff Monken.
“They talked about Georgia Tech being a great school and how a degree from there is one of the best you can get,” Jones said.
“They also talked about how they’re able to compete with some of the best teams in the ACC.”
The short meeting included a brief discussion on the Jan. 31 junior day itinerary at Georgia Tech.
“Coach Johnson just kind of gave me an outline on what will happen on junior day,” Jones said.
Jones plans to attend junior days at Notre Dame and Ohio State during the previous weekend.
“I have a lot of interest in Georgia Tech,” Jones said, when asked how he rates the Jackets.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Chattahoochee County’s Cedric Wilson has narrowed his recruiting list to Florida State, Southern Miss and Troy.
“It looks like it is down to those three,” Panthers coach Josh Kemp said. “He’s going to visit those three this month and decide after that.”
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Wilson, who is projected as a safety, linebacker or running back in college, also was recruited by Auburn, South Florida and Clemson.
Teammate defensive tackle Kendrick Reeves is deciding between Eastern Kentucky, Georgia State and West Georgia, and wide receiver Jacovi White has committed to Georgia Military College.

Northview junior DL courted by Michigan State, closer to making decision
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Michigan State is near offering Northview junior tackle Denzel McCoy a scholarship, Titans coach Jim Showfety confirmed Wednesday.
McCoy said Spartans quarterbacks coach Dave Warner met with his father, Titans assistant Gary McCoy, at Northview this week. Showfety said Warner later told him something like, “It’s pretty much a slam dunk we’re going to make an offer” pending final approval from (head coach Mark Dantonio).
The 6-foot-4, 273-pound McCoy has been recruited heaviest by Maryland, Oregon, Louisiana State, Florida State and Georgia Tech and plans to commit verbally to someone in the next few months.
“The process is going pretty good, but I hope to decide before spring practice,” McCoy said. “I want it off my mind and be able to contribute everything I have in my final season.”
McCoy was the Titans’ second-leading tackler this season, behind linebacker Jarrod Neser, but couldn’t keep Northview from finishing 0-10. Showfety believes McCoy has the skill to help revive Northview next season.
“He’s definitely a player who’ll have a major role in 2009,” Showfety said. “He’s shown great leadership and wants to be a central part of our turnaround. He has all the tools to be a dominant player.”
