Jarvis Jones: UGA’s last remaining target in the state

Now that the UGA has landed Booker T. Washington cornerback Branden Smith, the state’s No. 1 prospect, the Bulldogs will go after No. 2.

Jarvis Jones, who is ranked the Georgia’s second-best prospect by both the AJC and Rivals, is the last remaining in-state target for UGA (at least for now).

How important is Jones to the Bulldogs? On the first day of last month’s contact period, Jones was the first prospect that UGA visited. And the Bulldogs dispatched six assistant coaches to let him know his importance.

The Carver-Columbus linebacker was impressed with UGA’s efforts, but he has kept a poker face about his college decision. Jones has already taken recruiting trips to Southern Cal and Georgia, and plans official visits to Texas, LSU and Florida later this month.

He will choose between all five schools on Feb. 4.

UGA is a great fit for this type of athlete. With our scheme he will get a ton of tackles because of his ability to run through blockers. Our D-Line will be very good over the next 3 to 4 years with the guys that we have moving up in class and our current recruits, not to mention Atkins and Owens coming back healthy. You can call me delusional but despite our defensive breakdowns this past season we could very likely be a top 5 national D next season. Mr. Jones can be that intimidator that so greatly complements the speedy guys we have playing the position now. As it is our LB’s make a lot of big plays in the backfield. With a more veteran and deep D-Line and better coverage it will just set the table for a guy like this and Rennie. Not to mention D.G., D.D. and A.D. I’m pretty excited about the Vasser guy too. He’s kind of under the radar but he’s gonna be a beast too. I love to see big, fast headhunters at LB, especially in this scheme.

Not sure his bleached corn-rowed braids would fit with red and black. I picture him running away from SEC competition.

I dont mind a guy with a little expressiveness as long as he has the right attitude between the lines and doesn’t get in too much trouble. He’d probably have to lose that hair as soon as he stepped on most campuses anyway. You may be right about him not wanting to have to compete as much. Maybe he does want the spotlight all to himself, but who’s to say. I do know that the guys that know they’re elite usually want to compete with the elite and the SEC is definitely that. Heck, he may just wanna get away from home. My personal experience is that its good to get away but not too far for too long. If he has some good family here in GA I would guess that it would play a large factor.

I can only imagine having Branden Smith and Greg Reid at corner positions. Has anyone looked at next years schedule. It is horrific. Arkansas is going to be awesome with Ryan Mallet. We need Stafford back in order to do well with our schedule next season. Jones, if you come to UGA you could play alongside Curran to make one hell of a tandem at LB. Please make the right decision. Don’t go USC fishing.

i remember this dude saying he would rather play in the weaker big 12 school instead of sec because less wear on his body….so he might not want to take his game to the next level like a lot of our defensive players who are now playing on Sunday

UGA-FAN, that was not Jarvis Jones who made the comment about preferring to play in the Big 12 over the SEC. That kid’s name was LeRon Furr. Jarvis Jones hasn’t said anything negative about UGA. BTW, I would love to get Jarvis Jones with our current class of LB’s.

UGA is awfully deep at LB, so Jones will have to come in and prove himself to get on the field. Competition weeds out the lazy and the less talented and spotlights the hard workers. If he’s up to it, he’ll have to really want it. I think at this point character is just as important as talent, and I don’t know enough about Jones to say if he’s a good fit. We need more guys like Moreno, Asher, Rennie, Stafford, B.Jones, Geno….hard workers that lead by actions, not words.

I watched Jarvis play a few times at Carver and all I can say is that this guy is a beast, but I think USC and Texas are fighting for him. For some reason I think he wants to get away from home. I will say that the DB from Lowdes is the real deal and we need him as well. I think he is Florida bound though.

I second that motion on Greg Reid. Forget about size, that kid is a special talent. I am holding out hope on Marlon Brown as well. Maybe Aaron Murray can make a few calls for us. For those that continue to make a character assessment on kids you have never met, never talked to, are clueless about their work ethic or academic abilities, take a long look at yourself. Stop judging those you don’t know. If it was you that was being recruited or if it was your child, you would be very offended. I am happy for all of these kids that have a chance to get a great education and possibly use their athletic talents on a professional level. God bless them all!

georgia is still going after reid and his teammate is a uga comit. georgia is pushing hard for a lot of top talent and are near or at the top of most of their list. jones would be a huge pick up for the dawgs. if you read what brandon smith said the dawgs were not high on his list at first but they made up ground and got him he said the only way he would de commit is if richt left that says a lot about are head coach. assistants come and go but their is stability in athens as far as richt and kids know that he will be tere for a long time andget a good replacement for any of them if they do leave. John lilly is one of the best recruiting cordinators around and if garner leaves he will take over and i would not mind seeing a guy with some fire coaching on the defense. and crome from miss state is a possible canidate and he shows a lot of fire in his coaching style miss state was crazzy for letting him go

If anyone had any doubts about Greg Reid’s football ability put them on the back burner. I knew this 5’9” guy was good when we (NSWR) played Lowndes. However, after watching him play against the best football players in the nation—he is great! He won the outstanding player award in the Citrus Armour All American Bowl. Lowndes will miss him like no other player. I hope he plays in ga at the college level.

It’s great getting the verbal committment from Smith and getting Jones would a feather in the cap!

Moving on to Greg Reid, one has to question his decommital to Florida. Does he have the grades to go to a BCS school or will he have to go the JUCO highway? Could it be that he is actually two years away from being eligible for D1 and by that time will he just try to move on to the pros? We’ve got a great verbal class up to this point and it’ll be interesting to see if CMR and staff can finish the recruiting drill with another top flight WR for the class of 2009.

Fellow Dawg fans while it would be great to get this guy, but in all honesty if he comes to GA he probably will be redshirted next year. Marcus Washington and Charles White will be back next year at the Mike position with other highly thought of LBs Dent, Gamble, Hebron etc returning as well. All these in coming freshmen LBS will have a hard time seeing the field. Georgia needs more offensive and defensive linemen particularly O-Tackles and defensive ends as you can not have enough of these guys where most games are won.

I think that Jones would be an excellent choice ,but I really like the idea of having Reid and Smith holding down the corners.Throw Jawanza Starling in the mix and we could have some bangers back there along with the guys we have already. I wish we could’ve landed Ray Ray Armstrong though-He’s a BEAST!….At SS? fuggetaboutit.

Buzz_29: Did you get your ring yet that has the UGA score on it? Might want to put the LSU score on as well. Both rings came in a box of crackerjacks. Winning 1 time out of 7 is about par for the course with Georgia Tech vs. GA. I hate myself for saying this but, Jarvis Jones is going to be a BIG time BUST. First of all because he has attended quite possibly the weakest member of the GHSA academically.(Carver-Col) No way he can cut the grades at UGA. WHOOPS. Forgot about “under-water basket weaving 101 etc.)” That may carry him for his first 1 or 2 years. Jarvis is not a bad kid. He simply comes from a school that any 5th grader could beat in a spelling contest.
