UGA-bound QB Aaron Murray says leg feels “great” after all-star game

UGA-bound quarterback Aaron Murray said he’s not reading too much into his final statistics in Saturday’s U.S. Army All-America Bowl.

Murray completed one of seven passes for seven yards in the game. He started at quarterback, but rotated with three others at the position. Murray ended up playing a total of three offensive series.

“I thought I played all right, but not great,” Murray said. “I was never able to catch a rhythm.

“But I’m not complaining. It was an honor to be there, and play and practice against the best high school players in the country. I made a lot of friends, and it was an experience I’ll never forget.”

Here is the most important question: How did Murray’s leg feel after the all-star week? Murray broke his left leg on Oct. 16, but returned in time to lead Plant High to Florida’s Class AAAA championship.

“The leg feels great. It’s still not at 100-percent. It has been around 10 weeks since the surgery. I’m at about 90-percent Hopefully sometime next month I’ll be at 100-percent.”

Murray, who picked Georgia over 53 scholarship offers, will arrive in Athens on Sunday. He is flying from San Antonio to Atlanta, where he will drive with his family to UGA.

Murray said he will set up his dorm room on Sunday night, meet with academic counselors to pick classes on Monday, and begin school on Thursday.

Did anyone see our ‘new’ QB commit Murray play today in the ARMY All-American Bowl? Not trying to be negative, but I was not impressed at all. He over-shot receivers, under-through receivers and just did not look that good. To his credit the O-line wasn’t blocking well for him, but he couldn’t score for the almost 2 quarters that he played, however the other QB’s for the East scored the other 3 TD’s (1 TD was Defensive pick). Not good that he was playing against college level players and looked like he was out of his league.

I think he did fine. He had a long pass that would have been a touchdown was thrown very well and yet was dropped by the reciever. I am excited and looking forward to AM being a DAWG! God Bless the Bulldog Nation!

murray is way to small to be a qb at a big time school like uga. i bet he is not even 6 feet tall. i think we will be better off with the kid from oconee. murray may have a great attitude but he does not have the physical attributes to be a qb in the sec.

uga dawgz ,I realize that he didn’t have time to work with these guys but for a week but neither did the other QB’s. And I also know his leg is hurt but the way the ball was thrown didn’t impress me. It didn’t seem to have much zip on it and most of them were not accurate. Anyway, I’m not going to go on & on about his play because it was only 1-1/2 or so and the kids got like 53 offers, so I’m figuring he just had a bad day. I was just disappointed because I didn’t expect the other QB’s in the game to look so much better. Oh well, we’ll see soon enough.

Will somebody, anybody tell me why we have crowned this kid the next “great one”. There is a kid named Mattenberger, who will be on campus this month. This kid is 6’5 228lbs with a cannon of a arm, ranked the ninth best Q.B. in the country, and many scouts[check out rivals.com]say he may have the best arm in this class of Q.B.’s.Murray is ranked number three, and has shown that he is a leader, but this is the next level, and neither kid has proved himself worthy of nothing.Joe Cox, Logan Gray also came in highly ranked and know the offense now. Keep in mind, that this won’t be Friday nights, this will be Sat’s where the stakes are much high. Coaches lose there jobs,it’s two, and three deep at every position with top 50 to 100 players.I hope both are so good, that if one is having a bad day the other one can step right in, until that happens though I Would’nt hand either the keys to the city! Just in case you forgot, David Greene was the #1 ranked Q.B. in Ga, the next year, some kid named Shockley showed up. Was Greene the better Q.B.,or was Coach Richt more comfortable with him? Both won a S.E.C. Title, both went pro, difference is the backup has staying power. So lets see how this pans out, because I can guarantee you, whom ever can take the DAWG NATION to the s.e.c., and natl championship game, is gonna be the one Mark Richt plays.Keep in mind also that W.Martinez is still the DC, so it may not matter who is behind the center. It only matters if you can stop your opponents, and that needs to be the main objective this year coming up.

I don’t know much about football, but I’m pretty sure we should fire Matinez for the poor defense the dogs played in the last game. I can’t believe he still has a job after allowing those 3 points to MS when they started on our own 6. Not to mention they gave up 3 other points on the other 25 plays MS started in our half of the field or that they kept running right back out there when Stafford and that wonderful O LIne we have screwed up over and over.

And while we are at it, Bobo has to go for making Stafford throw all of those poor passes in the first half and keeping that ridiculous defense on the field the whole half. I am sure that he taught Stafford just how to overthrow every one and throw those 2 yard slants 105 mph.

The O Line coach has to go as well. Did you see Ben Jones just tackle that guy by one leg and get that drive/momentum killing penalty? What kind of idiot would put that into a blocking scheme?

Speaking of idiots, what about the idiot special teams coach that tells this little kicker to kick it out of bounds all the time? Surely he has to go.

I don’t see how we recruit anyone with all of our poor coaches. I also heard the coaching staff rented vans to carry those poor guys who kept getting caught drunk to the bars. Some reports even said they MADE them drink. Heard it was Garner, that’s why TN wants him, they want stupid coaches on their staff.

AJC should require an IQ test be given before someone can post on a public forum.

Talk about stupid coaches … even Willie Martinez looked fairly good against a poor to mediocre team like MS. I don’t have great anticipation for the 2009 season with Willie as the DC. I didn’t even go to the bowl and had little interest in the bowl with all the “let downs” in 2008 primarily caused by Willie. Coach Mark is putting a noose around his neck for 2009 by keeping Willie as DC. I know we could do much better and I know that we absolutely couldn’t do any worse.

Aaron Murray is a “class act” and will be a wonderful addition to the Dawgs if he plays a little or plays a lot. It’s players like Murray who add character and attitude and winning to a program. It’s coaches like Willie Martinez who take it away. He needs to resign … resign now. He would be a very fine High School Coach and his record proves he just can’t cut it at the college leve. Willie, PLEASE GO!

I feel sorry for Murray and his family. The kid hasn’t even arrived in Athens and there’s people everywhere from he’s going to win multiple national championships to he’s gonna be a bust because he’s not tall enough. The Georgia fan base is the most delusional crowd on the planet and now they’ve got a new idol about to be on campus. Odds are there’s gonna be a stretch where UGA just doesn’t have a David Greene or DJ Shockley or Matthew Stafford…pretty good run there Dawgies but it’s about time you got a Claussen or how about a Chris Rix type player to really stink it up in Sanford Stadium for ya? Half the fan base is glad Stafford will leave and half is saying he’ll fall on his a* if he leaves early…that’s just the negative side of the fan base. Good luck Aaron Murray, here’s hoping your parents are ready for the circus you are about to enter.

In case you guys have forgotten, Zach Mettenberger is coming in next year as well. He’s a true pocket quarterback like Stafford but stands at 6’5 tall. He may be the one that will rise and take over the starting job. “Classic pocket-style passer with tremendous arm strength. Has shown to be a good decision maker. His height will be beneficial in reading coverages and throwing over interior linemen.”

Texas leads the nation in developing QB talent followed by Florida and California. Georgia high school QB’s make good PAT holders in college.

Bottom line is maybe (I hope) he turns out to be a great QB, but I was not impressed. He was no Tebow, or even Stafford for that matter. Attention all Dumb Asses. Its time to lift the veil. Willie is horrible. The reason we were not tackling good against Tech is because no one is making these players accountable yet the coaches had the nerve to say the players arent playing hard enough. Reshad Jones and Ellerbe would have decapitated Dwyer if Saban was coaching them. Half a* effort wont fly with any coach other than CMR. We are so far as a program from the level of Ala,Fla or LSU. Some pinheads say why cant we play defence like we did against MSU. Hey!! Sawdust head. Maybe because it was MSU and not Florida that we were playing. We need new coaches. The new wave is here. Pay great coaches great money and you can pull guys from the NFL. Tennessee is doing it now and so will Auburn, Florida and Lsu.

rashard jones is a key reason why we lost to tech. he would go after the QB when his man was the running back.

Whoose job is it to hang ten in somebody’s butt when players miss tackles?

Who needs to crack down when players get personal fouls? Doesn’t Sanford Stadium have a good set of steps to run the guilty in question till their tongues drag?

Doesn’t CWM know how to send someone to the showers if they miss assignments and take it on themselves to do somethiing other than what they are coached to do?

It is highly evident that the entire Georgia program needs to find a new born attitude in reguards to discipline on and off the field. CMR needs to instill it or the whole thing will eventually come crashing down on him.Every day that passes 2002 and 2005 are getting further and further in the rear view mirror. I appreciate CMR and what he has done, and think he’s a great coach, however reality tells us what yesterdays accomplishments will get you. Ask Fulmer and Mike Shannahan.

2N4YEARS can mean alot thing can’t it Gator. I could care less whether you watched it or not. Three series in a High SchooL All Star Game doesn’t tell us alot. Coming back from a broke leg in OCT to play in the state semi’s and finals to win a state championships means alot more.

By dawgfan31

January 4, 2009 4:25 PM | Link to this

Why is everyone picking on this kid for? first of all he played 3 series second of all, you won’t get a lot of zip on the ball if your broken leg isnt healed, and 3rd did you already forget the same qb’s that supposedly looked better than him in this game he beat in the Elite 11 QB competition, remember AM won that.

Also, its rare that a true freshman comes in and starts right away. Tebow didn’t do it, and unless I’m wrong Stafford started because Joe T got hurt. Also, when CMR was at FSU they always had a good qb, but haven’t had one since. Since CMR has been at UGA we have always had a good qb and CMR and staff know what they are doing, looks like they have 4 qb’s to choose from so give it a rest and go DAWGS!!

Mike T, of coarse it could mean more, although you failed to give an example. Funny you think I’m a Gator. Hilarious actually. And just what have I stated that would give you that impression? You came to that conclusion because I stated that Murray did not look good yesterday? Wow. Tell me, did you watch him play in the All-Star game? And while it’s not a absolute indication on what his future holds at UGA I think it is more relevant how he performed with elite players (All-Star game) that other high school’ers (State Championship)that will never play another down of football. Of coarse he wasn’t 100%, but that’s beside the point. If you have not seen him play than you have no idea what you are talking about, which is obvious.

Mike T, I never meant to give the impression that Murray’s play yesterday was an absolute indication on what his future holds, and if I did I apologize. My only point is that I was hoping that he would at least hit his targets. I also realize that he didn’t work with these guys long but neither did the other QB’s, which scored the other 3 TD’s. Whether Stafford stays or goes, there will be four other QB’s at UGA who are all very good, regardless of what they looked like in the last game they played. UGA will have a solid QB and will have a solid back up. Personally, if Stafford goes, I think Logan Gray will get the nod. He sure made me look twice in the last spring game. However, there are a lot of spring practices and fall practices to go and a lot of competing. CWM needs to prove something quickly. I believe his chain will be very short, which is not good for anyone in any job. I hope he turns the corner.

We have some idiot fans! This kids are coming here because of their success and ability. Our coaches know what we need, which explains why every other competitive school out there wants them. Get off Murray’s height and performance in the game. If you assume Mettenberger will be better bc he is taller you’re nuts. Mettenberger may have impressive size and armstrength but he doesn’t have Murray’s speed and scrambling ability. They both have great potential, so let’s just leave it at that.

This is Willie’s year to redeem himself. Terrence Moore of all people, made a great point, our D finished in the top ten the last two seasons under Willie. The man can coach, not like he forgot. Maybe with a healthy team next year and one of these DE recruits stepping up we’ll see the nasty D we’re used to seeing at UGA.

Murray will be just fine…most every camp he attended he was the MVP, or elected for the leadership award…for him to have played after the leg break should speak volumes of his leadership abilities and toughness…BTW, Aaron also attended the 2007 Elite 11 as one of the 2 ball boys and wore the yellow jersey a time or two beating out the top H.S. QB’s and even going against the camp counselors (who happen to have been starters in college) and he more than held his own…in the All-American Bowl he didn’t look like himself…if he gets back to good health, you all will be very happy…his attitude and leadership alone will make UGA a better team…if you get a chance to attend a practice and watch him throw, then you’ll understand what all the hype was about…
