UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner recruited by Tennessee

If Georgia assistant Rodney Garner takes a job with Tennessee, it could cause a rippling effect among UGA’s 2009 recruiting class.

Garner, who is considered one of the nation’s top recruiting coordinators, is talking with Tennessee about a position on its coaching staff. Last month, Garner interviewed for Auburn’s head coaching job, which was given to Gene Chizik.

Garner has been on UGA’s staff since 1998, and directs the team’s recruiting efforts. This past year, he has helped the Bulldogs put together a recruiting class that is expected to finish among the nation’s top 10.

The Bulldogs are finalists for several of the nation’s top uncommitted players, including defensive back Branden Smith of Atlanta, wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis and tight end Orson Charles of Tampa, Fla.

What if UGA loses Garner? A quick fix may be promoting tight ends coach John Lilly, who served as Florida State’s recruiting coordinator.

Rumors out of Kville have Garner new LB coach and DC in waiting. Flew to Kville on private jet, back to Georgia on UT plane. That usually means it’s done deal.(landed in ATL cause of weather). Hopefully these are just rumors. Can we blame him for leaving? How would you like to work under Martinez and watch the defense get progressively worse every year..and watch the head coach do NOTHING about it.
Hopefully the rumors aren’t true and he stays in Athens. Doubt it.

The Tennessee message boards have been saying this is basically a done deal since this morning. That would be a huge addition to coach Kiffin’s staff. That would be 4 ex-recruiting coordinators on one staff. They may not be able to coach, but there will be TONS of national talent in Knoxville!

Lane, you’re cracking me up. And it hurts when I laugh because I’m still sore from throwing my visor so much the other day. But on a serious note, you start recruiting illegally, you make an announcement about how much harder you are going to recruit in the SEC, you hire one of my guys from me, now you’re trying to hire one of Georgia’s guys from them. You’re starting to p** all of these guys off before you’ve even played the first game of the season, and for what? Ole Florida is gonna hang half a hundred on ya this year again…heck.. maybe even another 60 like they did last year (or was that 59?). Anyway, good luck impressing all of those Tennessee fans. When the season rolls around son, we’ll make sure and welcome you to the SEC.

Sincerely,

Steve Spurrier

I CAN TRULY SEE WHY COACH GARDNER WOULD WANT TO GO. WHO IS THIS WHOLE WORLD WOULD LIKE TO WORK UNDER WILLIE MARTINEZ? WORKING UNDER THE WORST DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL WOULD CERTAINLY MAKE ME WANT TO GO. RICHT’S FRIENDSHIP WITH WILLIE IS COSTING THE GEORGIA PROGRAM MUCH MORE THAN ANYONE COULD EVER REALIZE. WILLIE SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED AFTER THE TECH GAME. HE WILL BE THE DEATH OF THE PROGRAM NEXT YEAR AND IN THE YEARS TO COME. I HAVE LITTLE HOPE FOR NEXT YEAR … DIDN’T ATTEND THE BOWL GAME THIS YEAR (NOR DID MANY GEORGIA FANS WITH AN ATTENDANCE TOTAL OF ABOUT 55,000).

IT’S TOO BIG A “LET DOWN” TO SEE WILLIE ON THE SIDELINES. LET’S PRAY … GARDNER WILL STAY AND WILLIE WILL GO.

Agree Jimmy. Coach Richt’s stubborn aligience with Martinez is ultimately costing the program in a big way. Losing games and big time assistants. Just my opinion but may cost us some big time recruits. Hope this situation doesnt spiral in wrong direction.

Rodney Garner going back to Knoxville. How funny is that? Come on Rodney, get it on brother….there’s lots of people in this state that would love to help you recuit to the big “T”. Mark Richt, the ship has just barely grazed that iceburg. Nothings wrong at all, can’t you hear that orchestra playing on the aft deck? It’s all good, now let us join hands and take a moment to thank Rodney Garner for his good work distributing the funds to the players in Athens all these past ten year. Real men of genius will have a special new commercial for it soon. Mr. givinmoneytotheplayersguy.

When BVG left he knew CMR would not be able to carry the UGA program much further. CMR continues to make bone headed decisions just like the poor clock management before halftime during the bowl game. Garner knows the UGA program is about to unravel anyway. CMR blew another golden opportunity when Neil Callaway left to go out and hire a good proven offensive coordinator. Instead CMR puts Boo Boo for on the job training who continues to make stupid calls in the red zone. Now CMRs friendship with Willie is also costing UGAs talented recruits because of Willies ineptness. Now with Garner leaving it will make UGAs recruiting class drop like a lead balloon. If Richt was a smart football coach he would hire someone with Georgia ties and knows Georgia football. If Richt does this he wont find himself in this position again as far as recruiting is concerned.

Obviously somethings wrong with the program when one of your mainstays is looking for an escape hatch. And he’s going over the wall at the worst possible time. CMR will give the old “I’m flattered that our coaches are being pursued and we wish him all the success in the world” speech, but it’s more than obvious that Garner wants out. The UGA program is about to be at a crossroads. Which way will it go?

At any rate I’ll bet next year won’t be pretty.

I can see Garner leaving for UT and then keeping his eyes and ears open for his next opportunity. Garner always seems to be on the look out for something else. If he’s not happy at UGA it’s time for him to go. Let’s bring David Pollack on as coach to replace Garner.

Garner is the recruiting cord and D-line coach. We have not had a decent DE since Pollack and he would have been a Dawg regardless. Yes i remember Howard , He was moved from LB to DE his SR year. If Garner could do his Job and get some decent DE’S CWM would look a lot better. There is alot of successful Dawgs out there coaching who would like to come home K. Smart , W. Musschamp , T. Jones. For all of you Willie haters you can only coach the players put in front of you and Garner Hasn’t put alot there lately

I think everyone is looking into this more than what it is. Everyone is throwing people under the bus in speculation. This is ridiculous. CMR has decided to keep CWM and thats that. Support his decision and move on or cheer for someone else.

The bottom line that everyone is overlooking is the fact that this is a desperation move on Kiffin’s part. UGA is 5th nationally right now and could land 4 more top 150 recruits within the next couple of days. That would put them about #2 or #3 in the country. Kiffin is using Garner b/c he has no diersity on his staff and desperatly needs some. Plus, he wants the WR from Memphis.

Why would Garner take a lateral move to a unstable coaching staff. He is 3rd on UGA depth chart behind CWM and CMB. If he went to UT he would be farther down that chart plus behind and group that is all related. Has anyone ever worked with all family members? Your opion don’t matter. He is using this situation for leverage for more money.

So quit dogging everyone else and throwing them under the bus.

Poor Roaddawggie, Kiffin’s staff is hardly unstable. You’ve got the greatest D mind in all of football, college or pro alongside one of the college game’s best recruiters in Coach O.
One WR from Memphis,no matter how good, is forcing this change. The Vols are already in with several that are just as good if not better. They may get Brown and some others or no one else, but the fact is Kiffin is putting a recruiting monster in place and Garner would just add to that. Face it, Garner was kept by Richt for the same reason he is being pursued by the Vols….recruiting. CMR has no intention of ever giving Garner the DC position, but wouldn’t dare tell him that so he wouldn’t have to replace his ace recruiter. At least when Garner goes back to UT, he knows he’s probably not ever going to be DC there unless Orgeron takes a HC job somewhere else. Kiffin was probably very honest with him about that, and won’t string him along like Richt did. Regardless, Garner won’t be there more than a couple of years I’d say. Just long enough to learn from Monte Kiffin and get a long deserved DC job somewhere else.

By Roaddawg80

January 4, 2009 2:23 PM | Link to this

Poor OGRE or whatever that spells.

CMR has never lead on Garner. CWM came to UGA the same time CBV came there and it was a toss up for CMR which one to choose. If CWM gets fired or excepts a new positon then I would venture to say it would be Garner position. The fact that you are saying Kiffin is honest with him might be so. However, the fact that Stacy Sears and others decided not to take lateral moves is because of the character of CMR and the honesty and loyality he brings to the table.

For the fact of saying Kiffins is unstable is that he has not proven himseld anywhere yet. Yes, they do have Monte but what else. Orgeron??? DIdn’t he get fired from Ole Miss. WOW. And that was after Cutcliff laid the foundation for him. So who is proven?? They all have been fired for not performing except Monte.

I guess your right. Maybe all the non proven coaches can put there minds togather to make one good mind. LOL.

UT plane in Athens now. Heading back to Knoxville tonight. It’s over. Yes, Banky, the Vols need recruiters. Georgia needs recruiters. Florida needs recruiters. You need the horses to win. Tennessee doesn’t turn out the HS studs to just stay in state, but then again, Stafford is from Texas, Moreno from Jersey. You gotta go nationwide. Still don’t believe all those stud recruiters stay longer than 3-4 years, but they will establish a solid foundation to put Tennessee back in its rightplace as a Top 5 team, as is their birthright.

I don’t want to see Garner go, he is too much of an asset to the UGA program, but it seems like he wants out, i.e. interviewing with 2 teams on the past few weeks. If he decides to go to UT under their new coach (poor choice for a coach), then we should be questioning his judgment, not CMR, Bobo or Martinez.

I believe the quality of the UGA program and the character of CMR draws good prospects to Georgia. I don’t think we’ve always had the best recruiting for the quality of our program. If Rodeny goes … it will mean change … and I believe there’s lots of things that need changing at Georgia … especially the defensive coordinator. Coach Garner is probably frustrated with dealing with Willie and won’t say it. I’d get out too. I’m so frustrated with Willie’s lack of defense it has been greatly discouraging to me. I love the dogs but literally hate the results of Willie’s coaching. The wrong man is probably leaving UGA….

Rod, when the UT plane picks him up in Athens, do you think they make him walk back? Of course the plane dropped him off in Athens. Now he’ll go and see how much of a raise he can get out of CMR. I believe this is about one thing only -$$$. Not sure why you would want to make a lateral move, uproot your family and take a downgrade in status, so doubling your salary would be the answer to that. I have faith that our coach is making the right decisions and will do his best to keep coach Garner. If he can’t afford to keep him, we’ll have to move on and I’m positive CMR will wish him the best.

Dawg92, look at the activity log at the bottom of the flightaware page. The UT picked RG up saturday flew back to Tenn for dinner with Kiffin. The plane flew him back to fulton county last night because of fog at 10:40 last night. The UT plane flew back to Tenn last night after droping RG off in Atlanta. I assume RG met with CMR this sunday morning and decided to take the UT job. The UT plane arrived back in athens today at 2:31 pm. The only reason the plane would have come back to Athens today is the deal must be done. Im assuming alot based on the flight schedule of the UT plane from the link I posted earlier.

CRG may be gone to TENN. And may be staying. Maybe more money, who knows. UGA will probably hire someone from within the current staff to replace him. After all selling UGA football to a recruit and his parents mostly requires the involvement of the head coach. This shouldn’t be a problem with a winning program. Note Florida State and it’s lack of recruiting and performance since CMR left town.

By PHIL

I don’t know much about football, but I’m pretty sure we should fire Matinez for the poor defense the dogs played in the last game. I can’t believe he still has a job after allowing those 3 points to MS when they started on our own 6. Not to mention they gave up 3 other points on the other 25 plays MS started in our half of the field or that they kept running right back out there when Stafford and that wonderful O LIne we have screwed up over and over.

And while we are at it, Bobo has to go for making Stafford throw all of those poor passes in the first half and keeping that ridiculous defense on the field the whole half. I am sure that he taught Stafford just how to overthrow every one and throw those 2 yard slants 105 mph.

The O Line coach has to go as well. Did you see Ben Jones just tackle that guy by one leg and get that drive/momentum killing penalty? What kind of idiot would put that into a blocking scheme?

Speaking of idiots, what about the idiot special teams coach that tells this little kicker to kick it out of bounds all the time? Surely he has to go.

I don’t see how we recruit anyone with all of our poor coaches. I also heard the coaching staff rented vans to carry those poor guys who kept getting caught drunk to the bars. Some reports even said they MADE them drink. Heard it was Garner, that’s why TN wants him, they want stupid coaches on their staff.

AJC should require an IQ test be given before someone can post on a public forum.

you all may not like it, and i don’t know if i like it a lot, but what you are seeing right now is the future of college football. you might blame UT and jim haslam for starting it, but the truth is that it has been going on for a long time, and when UGA overpays to hire a hot coach, you will say it is just the way things are in todays world. it won’t be long until UGA starts “finding” more money to pay coaches. and by the way, you ask why he would want to leave the “mighty” bulldogs to go to the “lowly” vols and their “unstable” coaching situation? maybe for the same reason he left the “mighty” vols for the “lowly” bulldogs and their unstable coaching situation after ‘97, maybe he just wants a change and a fresh start. truth is, if UGA couldn’t win it this year as loaded as they were and starting out #1, i don’t know if they ever will and the UT situation could be a fresh program on the rise.

UT told Garner when he left last night that the plane would be waiting for him in Athens today. Garner said he wasn’t sure if he could get the decision done that quickly but was hoping to make a quick decision. Kiffin and Hamilton told him they wanted him bad and they were sending the plane even if he was a bit uncertain of his timetable.

Look, people, that’s how you recruit top-notch talent - you put on the full court press and try to get them to sign while they’re excited about what you presented. The longer that you let them sit on it the more they start to weigh pros vs. cons and you give the other side the opportunity to counter.

It could backfire if Garner feels too much pressure but his decision will be finalized in the next 24 hours.

Maybe you do have the best coaching or maybe you don’t.

However, here are the facts; Your head coach is unproven. Where his only track was at USC under a great coach and the recruiting coordinator where he doesn’t have to compete with anyone else in the weak pac 10.

Then there is Orgeron who was fired from Ole Miss, Yes Ole Miss. Needless to say that Cutcliff laid the foundation for.

Granted Monte is obvioulsy a great coordinator but still lacks a head coaching job. A long time asst that means he didn’t have it to take it to the next level. Nothing personal but the truth.

So the BEST coaching staff in colllege football??? Maybe we will see. However it seems like a bunch of mediocre asst that hasn’t proved them selves.

And beyond that this great DC they have just left a team that had the play offs sewn up 6 games ago. Until the DEFENSE collapsed that is. You guys crack me up.

And as far as Martinez goes, I can’t believe anyone would bring up that we were at the top of the nations defense in all categories last year when he was the Messiah, but now that no one will put the responsibility of poor performance on our players, he has to go. I have a family member who works at Tyson Field in Knoxville and they told me they saw CRG get off the plane this evening with the Tennessee AD. Must be a bad sign if he is back in Knoxville so soon, probably will announce tomorrow. UGA needs to pick up the pace!

uga4ever, you and your family member are just confused. CRG got off the plane in Knoxville saturday but the plane brought him back last night. Thats probabley when your family member saw CRG. When the UT plane came back to athens today CRG did not get on the plane to go back to knoxville. Yall just got your days mixed up or your not following the story in chronological order. Its been posted in the Athens banner now, see here—> Talks underway to keep Garner in Athens By Marc Weiszer | marc.weiszer@onlineathens.com | Story updated at 7:19 pm on 1/4/2009 A University of Tennessee plane was spotted at Athens-Ben Epps Airport today. It delayed its scheduled 4:40 p.m. departure and took off at 5:34 p.m, apparently without Garner, who was not seen at the airport.

“Mark’s dealing with Rodney right now and talking to him about some things,” Evans said. “I’ll just wait for Mark to report back to me.”

Evans indicated that Georgia is ready to provide financial incentive for Garner to stay.

“I know Mark wants him to stay here and I want him to b e here,” Evans said. “Hopefully this will get resolved in our favor.”

No Rod, it was today not yesterday. It was around 6 o clock she called and told me about it. She’s a UT fan and Alumni so she had to rub it in my Bulldog face. I was hoping she was wrong but she sent a picture of CRG and Mike Hamilton walking through the airport. I wish it were a lie but it is not. If you read the article you just told me about it it say he was not seen at the airport, it did not give any other evidence he was not on the plane. I trust pictures not words.

Better we lose Garner than Searls! It would have been just as damaging as the day we lost Van Gorder! I don’t want to lose Garner though, so Mike Adams get off your a* and pay these people what they’re worth you tight a*! Van Gorder left because we wouldn’t pay him and that is the truth! No one will tell you that, but that is a fact!

Welcome to Knoxville Coach Garner. Georgia did not apreciate you anyway or they would have gave you the cordinator job. Wow we are very happy to have you

Hey Rod, Where do you get your info from. I honestly cannot see Georgia letting him go with only a month to go in recruiting. With the class we have. Yes, you are Tennessee and you have two NC’s in your history. Wow, big deal. You also have two losing seasons in 4 years and outside of recruiting and Monte your staff has not done a thing to prove themselves as far as great coaching ability.

yea, let’s see… UGA took Garner from Tenn 10 years ago. He was only at UT for two years… must not have been impressed with Knox-Vegas. Also, must be a UT grad… learn how to spell. This may seem a little mean but I am NOT going to inform you which word you misspelled… now, back to the banjo.

Dawg4life, are you confused too, or just a moron? I want Garner to stay UGA and I am not a VOl. It looks like CRG is staying at Georgia, I hope. Geeze we have some really big idiots on this blog.

DAWG DROPPINGS you forgot Petrino and Spurrier. The difference is that the Raiders began to win IMMEDIATELY after Kiffin was fired. Not the next year or the next two, but THE NEXT WEEK.

Vol guy, I mean uga4ever, shouldn’t this family member be picking up trash in the airport concourse instead of snapping pics of possible coaching candidates?

Rod, I realize that. I was responding to one of one of the Tennessee fans in part of that. Not too you. I agree with what you have stated so far. Tell me UT fans, sorry UT-K fans; how much better will your team be with Monte? You had the 4th best D in the land and that got you a 5-6 record. Your head coach just sent a 5 star qb that I saw do wonder in the Army game. Real smart, Boyd is stud and you let him go.

Here is what I do know about his current situation. He said just last season that he has been offered many coaching positions that paid better. However, he turned them down b/c of the family-like atmosphere in Athens. He said it would take a special deal to woo him away.

Hey Rocky top, to bad they do not teach how to spell at UT. Pay them all, that is what you need to do. Pay your coaches, players, cheerleaders, it appears though that you do not pay your teachers. Watch out, the revenuers will be shooting up your still, and you wont’ have enough money to buy some new overalls.

Garner is meeting with Richt tonight. He has not accepted UT job.

It’s all about money for Garner, but it’s about poor UT trying mightily to pull themselves back up to the level of UGA, Bama and UF. Good luck trying, ole Laney is gonna fail in Knoxville! You idiots will mist Fulmer! Just like the Tiders missed the Bear! UT on probation within 5 years as well!!

LOL at Chuck_UGA.

Why would UT want to be at UGA’s level? You certainly aren’t near the level of a UF and never have been. Simply put, UGA is mediocre at best.

You little doggies should be afraid.
