Branden Smith to announce during fourth quarter of Sunday’s game

Branden Smith, the state’s No. 1 prospect, said he is scheduled to reveal his college decision during the fourth quarter of Sunday night’s Under Armour all-star game.

UGA appears to be the team to beat for Smith, who is also considering Florida, Alabama and Florida State. Smith told the AJC again on Saturday in a telephone interview that he has no favorites, and will go with whatever college he feels is “best for me in my heart” on Sunday.

Smith, the defensive back from Booker T. Washington, said the game organizer’s have scheduled his announcement for the fourth quarter, but it is subject to change. Smith said he will be joined on the sidelines by family members, including his mother.

Contrary to popular rumors, Smith also said his decision will not be affected by the recent actions of Lowndes defensive back Greg Reid, the AJC’s all-classification Player of the Year, who backed off his longtime commitment to Florida. In other words, because Florida lost (at least temporarily) Reid, it didn’t gain any new advantage with Smith.

“Greg Reid is a great player, but I’d never make one of the biggest decisions of my life based on what someone is going to do, or not going to do,” Smith said. “There’s competition everywhere in college.”

However, Smith is particularly close to UGA recruiting coordinator Rodney Garner, who is talking to Tennessee about a position on its coaching staff. Smith confirmed to the AJC on Saturday night that he had heard about Tennessee’s flirtation with Garner, but said he needed to learn more before commenting.

Meanwhile, Rodney “The Bagman” Garner was in Knoxville today to interview for a spot on that new staff of recruiting machines that Lane Kiffin is putting together. Is he shaking down uga for more money or is he sick of sitting behind a lesser talented DC in Soft Willie Martinez?

He should’ve been the DC a long time ago.I love what CRG has done for this program. That is the only reason that I can see him going in circles. He left UT to come here for a better chance, why else would he go back there.

Lots of rumors on Vol boards that Garner to UT is almost a done deal. Take it FWIW. Losing Garner is as big a deal as losing Stafford and/or Moreno. He must be thinking he’ll get a nice line on the resume working with Monte Kiffin to help with his goal of becoming a DC…something CMR was never going to allow.

If we lose CRG it will be a loss, but is not going to destroy the program. John Lilly will take over as RC. Anyone remember he was the RC at FSU and had a top 5 class every year along with a number one class. CRG does this every year and if he is not happy then let him go. CMR and Athens GA are the best recruiters we have. UGA is still a very attractive place to coach.

I love Rodney Garner and think he has been a big asset for CMR. All of you people giving CWM heck stop, its ridiculous.

No your facts! No football before posting. Half of you say bring more pressure; well we blitz 65% of the play: half of you say the scheme wasn’t right well the kids were in position to make the play and just didn’t. The weakest part of the defense was b/c we didn’t put pressure on the qb. Which was b/c of the defense line position. Who coaches the DL; thats Garner. I am not blaming him but we had 18 season ending injuries to are team and a star CB playing half the year with a broke hand.

The season is what it is. Let it go! Yea I am disappointed. But I am so sick of people dogging CWM. Were you dogging him in the Outback Bowl when the defense kept us in the game when the O was stalling and turning the ball over.

Its the loyalty that CMR has with his asst. is the reason we don’t lose asst. like Searls and Garner to other schools. Instead of griping, thank CMR for the job and the character that he is and has done.

After Garner signs the dotted line and joins my staff (and the dead period ends), we’ll get Rodney, Ed, and Monte in Ed’s Hummer and drive down to Georgia to visit Branden to see if he wants to join Eric Berry in our backfield. Can’t wait for October 10th in Knoxville, it should be a lot of fun.

I don’t think Garner will leave a head coach that lets him take his kids to school before reporting to work. He has a dream job now, security with a head coach who’s going to be there a long, long, time. At Tenn. he could be out of a job with the Head coach in just a few years. Another job is not guaranteed! He would be crazy to leave a guaranteed gravy job that pays excellent money for what. For WHAT? If Dawgs win a nat. championship he will have plenty of offers come his way, if not he is still set for life. Not easy to find in the coaching profession!

There’s one good reason why Garner isn’t the DC at Ugag - he’s not good enough for the job. He’s a heck of a recruiter but tell me the last outstanding DL he produced. I’m not talking about some guy who had all the tools to begin with but a guy who was good and under Garner’s coaching really excelled. You may say Pollack but I’m telling you Ugag has brought in top notch DL for the last several years but name one that really stands out while at the same time you could name numerous LB’s and DB’s that have excelled. Garner really helps bring in good recruits but personally I think his coaching ability is minimal.

You’re starting to tick all of these guys off before you’ve even played the first game of the season, and for what? Ole Florida is gonna hang half a hundred on ya this year again…heck.. maybe even another 60 like they did last year (or was that 59?). Anyway, good luck impressing all of those Tennessee fans. When the season rolls around son, we’ll make sure and welcome you to the SEC.

A chain is just as strong as its weakest link and Willie Martinez is Georgia’s weaknest link. Rodney Garner is a class act and a great asset. He has passion and a winning attitude. He’s been one of the major brigt spots in the Dawgs Program. Give him a raise and more defensive responsibilty (that Willie can’t handle now) and loose him to be what he needs to be … a winner. I don’t care what it takes … Keep Rodney and sack Willie … everyone will be better off. I’m sick about the 2009 season with Willie still at the helm. Why, why, why won’t CMR man it up and give him his walking papers… Rodney needs to stay … WILLIE NEEDS TO GO … GO NOW!!!!!

I realize that the UGA D has regressed statistically in each of the past 3 years, so I understand some of the frustration regarding CWM. But why the venom regarding Bobo? The only problem I saw with the UGA offense this year was in the red zone, and that is easy to explain given the relative weakness on the O-line. Searels did a great job with what he had and Bobo masked the weakness well, but the bottom line is that UGA was inexperienced and, most importantly, forced into playing young underdeveloped linemen all year. That lack of strength is hard to mask in the power running game in the red zone. UGA just didn’t have the option of ramming the ball down the defenses’ throats down close to the endzone. That situation will improve in the next few years. Imagine Moreno’s year had he NOT been hit behind the line every other time he carried the ball?

Brandon, you should go to Tennessee where Monte Kiffin will turn you into a top NFL draft pick. All you will learn under Willie is how to jump on a receiver’s back after a 20 yard catch.

You may be right about Pollack. I believe Pollack will/might be a great recruiter. Probably a great line coach. Also he knows now to fire up the team. If Richt is going to keep CWM he needs someone who can help him make adjustments during the game. CWM has one major fault, he can’t make adjustments quickly. He needs to listen to his fellow coaches for help and because they all don’t like him and know of his temper they refuse to help him. It’s a bad situation and I don’t see it geting any better. The same situation that caused Tuberville his job. You can’t shout at your assistants on Nat. TV and have a happy team environment. Richt should have stopped that but apparently didn’t because he is afraid of CWM also. Hell, even I’m scared of him lol.

Coach Richt should NOT HAVE ANY FAMILY MEMBERS ON THE SIDE LINE WHO ARE NOT WORKING. If other Coaches can’t/won’t do it, he shouldn’t want or be allowed to do it. He should have enough common sense not to do it. My question is, does the Athletic Director have ANY say in this program at all! Does he not make any suggestions at all. Maybe Richt needs to buy and read that new hot best seller “The Urban Way”. He’s probably waiting on Sabans new book, “How to blow a bowl game”, by the second coming of Jesus.

Obeone:

I think your post makes an awful lot of sense. There is normally so little security in being an assistant coach and he is making a nice living at Georiga in a good work environment. Tough to leave that for a lateral move with a head coach that may or may not be successful. He may just be listening to what TN has to say.

My understanding is that Evans, UGA, and Richt are teaming up to offer an unprecedented contract in all of college athletics history to some of the key football assistant coaches. If Garner is the recipient of such a contract in the months to come… I don’t see the logic behind going to TN.

This is good news bad news to those of us who don’t think that Willie Martinez has done a good job because he may be locked in long term. It may also create a situation where Garner realizes that getting a promotion to D Coordinator at UGA is not going to happen any time soon with these new contracts and with Richt’s unique loyalty to his assistants.

Response to comment below..Will this matter when christ comes probably not, but as I am looking at an athletic scholarship to UGA, the schools athletes average GPA’s, test scores, graduation rates were the highest amongst the SEC and nationwide. I was suprised to see the football team ranked in the top 10 nationwide in these catagories as well. This was from 1997 to 2006’s latest data.

HEY DAWGS! CHEW ON THIS! IT DOESN’T MATTER WHO YOUR COACHES AND RECRUITERS ARE, THE FOOTBALL GODS WILL NEVER ALLOW THE OBNOXIOUS DAWG NATION TO EVER EXPERIENCE A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP! IT HAPPENED WITH HERSCHEL BECAUSE THAT WAS BEFORE YOU WERE SO BAD! THAT IS WHAT MADE YOU THE UNREALISTIC, EXCUSE-MAKING POOR SPORTS THAT YOU ARE TODAY! JUST ENJOY YOUR 9-10 WINS AND BEATING SOME SORRY BOWL TEAM, YOUR 9-10 ARRESTS EACH YEAR, AND ALL OF THIS WITH PLAYERS WITH 850 SAT AVERAGE! YOU ARE WHAT YOU ARE, SPARE YOURSELF THE ANGUISH! BUT IT WILL SUCK TO LOSE TO TECH FOR THE NEXT FEW YEARS.

knowshon hauls- YEAH, I’LL WORRY ABOUT ONE OF MY TEAMS PLAYING FOR THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP THURSDAY NIGHT, WHILE YOU JIZZ OVER SOME HIGH SCHOOL KID SAVING YOUR PROGRAM. chazz- CLASS ACT? STOMPING ON THE VANDY LOGO!? YOUR TEAM’S STUPID DANCING ON THE SIDELINE? IF YOUR TEAM CAN’T TAKE IT DON’T DISH IT OUT. YOU’RE MAD CAUSE YOU KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT YOUR TEAM. IT’LL NEVER BE UF AND WON’T BEAT TECH IN THE NEAR FUTURE. TECH IS 4-7 AGAINST UGA IN THE LAST 11. THAT RECORD WILL BE .500 BEFORE THE DAWGS BEAT THEM AGAIN. LET ME POINT OUT THAT TECH’S RECORD AGAINST GEORGIA OVER THAT TIME IS FAR BETTER THAN GEORGIA’S AGAINST FLORIDA.
track and punt whatever- YOUR ACADEMIC COMMENTS(NO STATS OR FACTS) ARE SO WRONG I’M NOT SURE WHERE TO START. BUT THE TRUTH IS THAT TECH’S FOOTBALL PLAYERS AVERAGE SAT SCORE AND HIGH SCHOOL CORE GPA IS TOPS IN THE NATION AMONG PUBLIC SCHOOLS, AND UF’S FOOTBALL PLAYERS HAVE HAD THE HIGHEST GRADUATION RATE IN THE NATION FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS. SO YOU’RE LOSING ON THE FIELD TO THEM BOTH AND OFF! THAT MUST REALLY SUCK FOR YOU!

Now if we can just find a defensive coordinator that can run a defense that can rank above #2 in the nation and give up less than three points when the oppenent starts on our 6 we’ll be in business.

I think Tech just got a verbal from a chinese guy who also plays chess. They will have rings made tomorrow to celebrate the news.

haha i love seing uga get all these 5 star athletes while PJ gets 3 stars. The three stars will be more motivated and better coached. As the yellow jackets swarm UGA in hotlanta UGA fans will be left to ponder….How is this happening?

By Muahahaha!!

To GT Student, you are typical with that loser’s mentality. UGA wins more games than Tech year after year. Simple and plain. UGA has more players in the NFL, wins more games on a yearly basis, plays in BCS bowls, sells out a much bigger stadium…. etc etc

Brandon Smith, is a dog now, we need that tight end from Aaron Murray’s school, and this can be a great year, 2011 already looking good for S.E.C. championship. All Dawg fans stop getting into a blogging battle with a team that has to get rings to commemorate beating us once in seven years. That tells you who we are and who they want to be.

GT student, get over yourself. You guys are last years South Carolina. You get an occasional win over UGA and you talk s** like you rule the universe. Reality will set back in in 09’ and you’ll have to run off another coach because he loses to the mighty Bulldogs 8 out of 9 games. Now get back into those books because we all know you’re not getting into a girl.
