Miami controversy may help UGA with TE Orson Charles
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Controversy surrounding Miami’s football program may benefit UGA in recruiting one of the nation’s top tight ends.
Orson Charles of Tampa’s Plant High has said he favors Miami over Georgia, Florida, and Florida State.
However, Plant coach Robert Weiner told the Miami Herald that “A player of mine won’t play for [Miami coach] Randy Shannon” again.
Weiner has been disappointed with Shannon’s treatment of former Plant quarterback Robert Marve. He was finally released from his scholarship at Miami this week, but with the stipulation that he cannot transfer to an ACC, SEC or Florida-based school.
Weiner told the Herald the transfer requirements were “the last line in a series of slaps in the face” toward Marve. Weiner also said Charles definitely won’t be attending Miami now.
Charles led Plant to last month’s Class AAAA championship. The team’s quarterback, Aaron Murray, has committed to UGA.

Try as they might, Miami never semms to get it right. At least not in the last many years. Not a program that makes you real proud.

Thuggery & Skullduggery at the U. Orson seems like a good kid, something seldom seen at Miami in the past decade — their motto, “Lie, Cheat & Steal, but don’t get caught!” Orson Charles will be a great addition to a very small (lacking in quantity), but excellent recruiting class!
I want him because he was the kid who shattered UFags National Championship trophy! What a story! Go Dawgs!

Did I read this right: Orson Charles wants to come to Miami, but his high school coach is saying he definitely won’t be going there because of the Marve situation? Isn’t it Orson’s decision? Does Weiner have the right to dictate where he can and can’t go? I find this very disturbing if that’s what’s going on.

The treatment of Marve is disturbing. How can a college kid playing football on scholarship be expected to also go to class? The pressure they are putting on him must be onerous.
Everyone knows you have to payoff the high school coach to get to the school’s players. You don’t think high school coaches are well compensated, do you?

What’s missing in this story is what Marve did to p** Miami’s coach off. He’s obviously talented enough to play or he wouldn’t care if he transferred to a competitor. I smell a rotten fish here and I can’t be sure who’s holding it w/o more info.

Shannon is trying to clean up Miami. Need to trust the coach, trust the disciplinarian. It must have been a series of straws that eventually broke the camel’s back. Support Shannon for what he is doing and forget about the Plant coach who wants to side with an 18-year old. THat is a very poor example of being an adult, perhaps.

I know there have been problems with high school coaches getting paid off or hired in order to get a recruit, but this is the first time I’ve ever seen a high school coach say that a player won’t be going to the college of his choice. This is much worse than the Marve situation because Marve signed a committment to Miami and doesn’t even have to be allowed to transfer. Miami is completely within the rules to set restrictions on his transfer. The reaction of the Marve posse demonstrates just how much trouble this kid is and it starts with the parents and coach. I doubt any big name school would take the risk of picking up Marve at this point. As far as Orson, I hope Weiner and everyone else allows him to make his decision. It would be a shame if they pressured him to go elsewhere and he later began to regret it.

they fired the offensive coordinator and marve has left. i really don’t care, but it looks like the next step would be to fire shannon if he does not produce. so maybe charles is thinking that way. it is a less stable enviroment. i would love for him to come to uga even though we have 42 tight ends.

The high school coches attitude is troubling. Word is that Marve did not attend class often enough and was often late to team meetings, etc. IF those things are true, then clearly Coach Shannon is right and the kid is in the wrong. Obviously, this makes one wonder just what the truth really is. I do notice the high school coach does not bother to respond to the alllegations coming from the Miami coaching staff.

Charles is a slow WR trying to play TE. He is 6’2. After the 4th game of the year, Marve’s HS coach Weiner and Marve’s dad were already shopping him to SEC schools and then Tuberville who is friends with Randy Shannon told him what was going on and when Marve showed up in Randy’s office he didnt know Randy knew. Thats why the stipulations are there. He was the starting qb but was looking for another school already

Georgia coaches are going to be square and honest with all their players . As for the rest of the SEC coaches character issues are a real problem. Trying to win at all cost is to ruin a lot of coaches respect for the game and the way they deal with young college players. Orson Charles you will never regret going to Ga.-Ask anybody that’s ever played recently in the last 8 years at Georgia.-Go Dawgs-CHARACTER COUNTS-

Well since we are all gossiping about things we don’t fully understand concerning the Marve/Shannon situation I’ll throw my hat in the ring too. I have been watching a lot of college football ( too much ) the last week or so but on one of the games an announcer reported that Marve’s father is battling prostate cancer. This may explain some of the hard feelings toward Miami for resticting schools where Marve could transfer. Apparently they can block him from attending an ACC school or a school in Fla. Quite possibly Marve’s father has travel limitations plus southern Florida is a long way from anywhere in US other than state of Florida so a weekend trip home to check on dad would be hard for someone attending a school in ,say, the north or west.

thing is that hes had cancer for 5 yrs and Marve committed to Alabama before signing with Miami so it wasnt an issue 2 yrs ago

There is obviously more to the situation at The U than is being reported. Would love to see Orson Charles at Georgia. Can anyone blame Randy Shannon for trying to protect his program?

Charles, thanks for the info. Still cancer is a legitimate concern for any family. Not to preach but it is a slow killer. So how’s papa’s health these days???

OC still likes MIA alot and Weiner will have little to do with his decision bc he only went to Plant for one year.

Marve was restricted because Weiner was contacting schools before Miami’s season ended about RM transferring. The lowest of the low and so that’s Shannon’s fault? Four other guys are transferring too. Are they complaining? I think Shannon is right on this one. If OC wants to be a pawn for his coach, Alabama would be a great place for him.

The reason that he was wanting to talk to other schools was because he said he couldn’t play for Randy Shannon because he didn’t like the guy. And yes it was an issue when he commited to Alabama…. Ala. is not far from Fla by the way…. you sound like the REAL Charles Barkley! They not only restricted him from ACC and Florida schools but SEC schools also. There are not many decent schools for him to go to anywhere near Florida with these stipulations. Just think about it and don’t make dumba$$ comments folks.

By the way there are several players who don’t like Randy Shannon and this will not be the last guy we see transferring in the next few years until the Hurricanes get a decent coach and not an a-hole like Shannon. Worst coaching hire in years!
