State’s No. 1 prospect gets advice from Champ Bailey

What do people tell Branden Smith, who is ranked as the state’s No. 1 prospect by the AJC, to dissuade him from considering UGA?

The Booker T. Washington standout says people tell him that his three other finalists - Alabama, Florida, and Florida State - do a better job of placing defensive backs in the NFL.

Smith said he has heard so many things that he is not quite sure what to believe. Therefore, when he had the chance recently to speak with Denver Broncos All-Pro defensive back Champ Bailey, they talked about the subject.

“Champ said ‘Don’t worry about that stuff. It doesn’t matter which college you play for … if you’re good enough, the NFL will find you,’” Smith said.

UGA told Smith he can be “another Champ Bailey” and play both ways for the Bulldogs. Bailey starred at UGA and is a member of the Broncos with Smith’s older brother, backup quarterback Darrell Hackney.

Smith claims to have no favorites and will announce his college decision on Sunday night.

1st!!! Branden, Champ is telling you the correct info about the pros finding you if you are NFL material. Who ever is telling you these other teams are doing a better job placing db’s in the NFL than is UGA are full of it. Look around at Champ, Blue, Battle, Davis…the list goes on and on. You see what I mean, don’t think coming to UGA will have any negative impact on you future whatsoever. Best of luck with your decision, and I do hope you come to Athens but you must follow your heart. Go Dawgs!

The NFL, are you kidding me! He should be making his decision based on the quality of the education he’ll receive.

Being a lifetime Georgia resident, I firmly believe their are benefits to attending UGA and to a lesser extent GT that a graduate can leverage for the balance of their career. Not to mention that the quality of the education is very good, especially at GT.

As far the NFL is concerned, he could go to N.Dakota State Technical School and still play in the league, if he is good enough.

Paul Oliver was the top DB a few years ago, and where is he know? I hope he got a good education and is living a productive life.

Paul Oliver plays for the San Diego Chargers. No. 27 in the program…look it up! He’s yet another Georgia DB who has successfully made it to the NFL.

I’m not a fan of the extra drama these kids enjoy adding to the selection process. The whole nonsense of stopping All-Star games every 5 minutes so some kid can sit in front of a table full of hats and have their last suspenseful moment is ridiculous. Just pick the school you want to go to and move on. But I guess that’s the whole “hey look at me” aspect of football that our media has glorified and helped create.

Good luck Branden, but please, save the showboating for the ACC teams.

Paul Oliver had a huge pick in the endzone last weekend. I think the people in San Diego will tell you exactly what happened to him.

Paul Oliver is also the starting FS for the Chargers. ANd he’s pretty good. Don’t just call out names like that. If you want specific names: Tim Jennings, Phillip Buchanon, TIm Wansley, Demario Winter are also additional names to the ones you listed.

Oliver also had a big interception in San Diego’s game on Sunday night. Add to the list of UGA dbs… J.Phillips and Jennings. Both started for their NFL teams this year.

Paul Oliver is maybe the best db in the nfl not named Champ Bailey. Oliver is the rich mans Ronnie Lott. Your just jealous because all the 5 star recruits want to play for the DAWGS! Branden SAT scores are not important, you’ll be in the nfl in 3 years. Sign with the DAWGS and win national championships are sign somewhere else and watch us in the title games.

Whoever is giving advice on number of NFL db’s produced needs to review the facts. Alabama , Floridia St., & Georgia all have 7 Db’s in the NFL and Florida has 5.

Alabama Seven db’s in the NFL Florida St. Seven db’s in the NFL Florida Five db’s in the Georgia Seven db’s in the NFL

So if a player has NFL talent it really does not matter which of these schools they go too to prepare. Of course I say GO Dawgs!

Young man, you have gathered all the facts. Sit down with your parents and do what makes you comfortable. Most all have it correct. It does not matter what school has produced the most db’s. Make a move and have fun. Most important, study hard when you get there. Go Dawgs

Scot Waldrop, I do agree that Smith should make quality of education a key/primary deciding factor. He may not be good enough to cut it in the NFL, or get injured in college. Too many of these “bluechippers” have over-inflated egos & are unrealistic about being “stars” in college & NFL. Of course, they’re enabled by boosters, profiteers, etc. However, their parents need to keep this kids a little more grounded in reality (& humility).

Regarding UGA DBs in the NFL, we’re well represented indeed. I hope this kid signs with the Dawgs.

I want to give credit where it’s due. South Carolina also 7 DBs in the NFL. Unlike UGA’s players, the SCAR DBs actually become one of the top players at their position: Sheldon Brown and Dunta Robinson are two that come to mind. Andre Goodman had 2 picks last week from Mr.Favre.

UGA canNOT compete w/ anyone when it comes to CBs or WRs actually becoming players in the NFL.

The DAWGS have placed many players in the NFL @ the DB position starting with Jake Scott super Bowl MVP, miami , Terry houge, Philly, Champ bailey, Broncos, Jermaine Philips, tampa Bay, Tra Battle, Dallas Cowboys, Thomas Brown Carolina, The Dawgs average more than Alabama I am sure. Not sure about FLA. No big time players Probowlers from ALA, FLA in recent years…champ Bailey is the best out of the SEC in 10 years. The school dont get you to the NFL the player does!

Georgia is the only school to produce three different superbowl MVP’s Jake Scott (VII) Terrell Davis (XXXII) Hines Ward (XL)

And big time programs do not mean a thing when it comes to the pros. Terry Bradshaw- Louisiana Tech Jerry Rice- Mississippi Valley State and Kurt Warner- Northern Iowa. GUT FEELINGS ARE USUALLY RIGHT

Go to Tech, where you can get a championship ring. Or a non-championship rin. Or a “We got our coach a big raise with a so so season and a trip to the Peach Bowl” ring.

those of u who say these kids should put education before playing in the nfl have lost your minds. yes, a college degree would be a wonderfull achievement and i’m sure these kids will take advantage of that. to make a million dollars a year is better than any degree.

u got billion of people who havn’t made a million dollars in their whole life so stop the nonsense. these kid who believe that they can play at the next level should pursue their dreams. i bet those same people who keep saying negative things about these kids putting the nfl before education have never made a million dollars in their whole life nor do they have a college degree.

fl and usc have more athelets to get drafted in the 1st round, so let these kids go where they feel they have the best chance to get drafted in the 1st round if thats what they want. had clueless mark richt used moreno the way vince dooly use hearshel walker he would be the #1 overall pick in this year’s draft. had clueless mark richt gotten a better defensive coordinator after they lost to wv in the sugar bowl our kids would have gotten drafted in the 1st rd.

these kids need to sign with ga tech because their coach is an excellent coach and because of him they will have a good chance to get drafted in the 1st round.

smith will make up his own mind where he will play, but i hope he play for ga tech because they have a pretty good coach.

Picking your major is your first priority.I had a player pick a ACC school to only find out they didn’t have his major. He wanted to pick on his own so I let him. Then he came to me and we talked and picked an SEC school. He started as a redshirt freshmen last year.He has the ability to play on sundays if he works at it.If he gets hurt, then he will have his degree to fall back on.Never underestimate the opponent or injury possibility.I think all the schools you are considering are great. It is nice to have options.I support Bama and Coach Nick Saban because I know when he signs you, he has a plan for you.You are not just a number. He tells parents about his process and follows through with it.He has a proven record every where he has been.Good Luck on your choice of college Branden, and pray about it.God has a plan for you if you will just listen to him.

Smith I would play for a Coach I know I could trust. That would be Mark Richt, a good and decent man and the players love Willie Martinez, who was a secondary coach. Coaches like Urban Meyer are a dime a dozen and could care less, truth be known.

Champ Bailey, Thomas Davis, Sean Jones. I will put those three against any one. Phillips has had a very good career as well. I believe Tim Jennings has started some games for the Colts.
