Georgia Tech’s Paul Hewitt discusses graduation rates of black athletes

Who gets hurt [when admission standards are different for athletes]? Former Princeton University President William Bowen points to the students the colleges would have admitted if they hadn’t enrolled less qualified athletes.

“There are grounds for concern,” Bowen said. “Places at a lot of these schools are precious things. To have them allocated this way raises troubling questions about fairness, about taking advantage of educational opportunity.”

But Georgia Tech men’s basketball coach Paul Hewitt says he and other coaches are able to go beyond test scores to find recruits who can succeed in school while also having the talent to play at a high level.

Hewitt says the only fair comparison is between athletes and other students with similar socioeconomic backgrounds. Seen that way, he argues, athletics programs perform very well. Black athletes, for example, graduate at higher rates than black students as a whole.

“To insinuate that athletics has caused this problem of poor graduation rates [among black students] is wrong,” Hewitt said.

Note: These are excerpts taken from a series of AJC investigative articles written by Mike Knobler. “While it’s commonly known that admission standards are different for athletes, the AJC study quantifies how wide the gap is between athletes and the general student body at major universities.” To read all the articles in full length, please click here. Non athelete black students aren’t all taking b.s. majors to keep them elgible for sports. They also don’t have constant tutoring, and in many cases favorable test schedules given to atheletes.Hewitt is a typical apologist coach, what’s Tech’s graduation rate since he’s been there ?

I love how the AJC, and liberals in general, insist on continuing to discuss blacks as though they’re some sort of alien life form that we must coddle and nurture. You can’t make people be great students, great athletes, what have you, just to fit your quota. It’s a PERSONAL decision to dedicate yourself at something, it has NOTHING to do with your skin color.

Way to go AJC for moving backwards instead of forwards. Talk about a disgrace to the civil rights movement….

awww poor blacks…. spreading HIV and fatherless kids like wildfire…. aww poor blacks… we much nurture them more….. THAT must be the problem!

I mean it would have NOTHING to do with the fact their main “rolemodels” are the clowns we all see at the BET awards……

If they actually were dumb enough to think OJ was innocent, just imagine how fast this country will go downhill as we put more and more blacks in charge.
And people wonder why South Africa went down the s**…….. thanks 2 liberal “aparti” crap….

Its gotta be a nightmare living down there right now at the rate the white families (especially farmers) are getting raped and murdered.

why is it that everytime i read about ph he is segregating blacks into their own special group. sorry ph but they are not special. times are tough for everyvbody.

does that mean they have their own group right along with mentally challenged?

mr bowen is dead on the money with his premise. more so when you look at ph’s philosophy. nba first, europe second, graduate third.

he recommended that lewis clinch quit school an play ball in europe. graduation be damned.

hey paul…. could it be that basketball iq and smarts tend to go hand in hand?

maybe ph needs to concentrate on getting good student athletes at gt whose first priority is graduation not the nba.

if ph wants to make the nba a priority i suggest that he field a semi pro team with the millions of bucks he has swindled from gt for pretending to be a college coach. personally i want my college ‘team’ back.

And please enough with the socio economic babble. maybe ph needs to read nobel prize winning cynitha tucker’s column on the dumbing down of the black community.

it seems that it is popular and prevalent for inner city blacks to dumb down on purpose.

listen to the lyrics of hip hop and gansta rap if you want to get a real idea of the problem and where it is being generated from.

until the black community realizes that the nba/nfl/gangsta crap is fools gold as compared to a real education, they will always be in their own ‘special’ socio economic group. forever playing the victim.

and our coach seems to be ok with this.

When CPH gets fired this year, will he still be President of the Black Coaches Society or whatever it’s called?

Or is this the only reason he hasn’t been fired yet?

This coach is ridiculous. He’s more worried about his black agenda than the state of GT basketball. Coach, your job is to teach these kids how to play basketball. You can’t even teach them how to shoot a free throw. I don’t care if the coach is white, black, red, yellow, green or blue. He’s getting paid millions to coach basketball not help the black cause in America. Send him down the road to work at the King Center and let’s get someone in here to coach basketball. Are we ever going to be ranked again? I really miss Bobby Cremins.

I agree with everything all of you have said. I have been complaining for the last couple of years about his biases that are serious and racist in addition to his ineptness as a basketball coach. Can you imagine the outcry if the white coaches formed the White Coaches Association. They would be crucified and villified in the press. He is a terrible role model. Maybe some of his defenders in these blogs last year will finally see the light. Many said we would be better this year. We are terrible playing patsies just wait to we begin playing the ACC teams. There are still players available every year in the class of Price, the Barry brothers, Harpring, Geiger, Yunkus, Wagner, etc yet he does not even try and recruit them. That should tell all of you in denial what is really going on.

Leave it to Yech to hire the Al Sharpton of college basketball coaches. If it were any other school I’d pity them for them their situation since this goon has positioned himself to where it will be “racist” if he’s ever fired. But since it’s Yech….I’m laughing my a$$ off!!! LOL!!!!!!

You know you Ga people are racist. You are always saying negative things about black people behind our backs or on the computer. So what he wants to improve graduation rate of black. he is black. Look at tech football getting stomped by LSU, then he gets a 50% raise. U r quiet now. Ga is filled with mccains and bush. Thats whats wrong with the world, white people are not in charge of everything. U think u know it all, but you are the reason why the US is hated around the world. Bush I and II, rush L.,Oreilly, and Perdue. My point exactly. If you don’t support tech basketball and the coach, shut up find another team.

I’m soooo sick of Paul “Robeson” Hewitt’s bull$hit

I wish the fk he’d spend just half the time on inbound plays as he does on BCA issues.

And now that he’s in the midst of a banner recruiting year, Radacovich can’t fire his sorry a$$ until next year, at the earliest.

Happy New Year, and THWG.

hey tired … i have to tell you. the most racist people in the world are black women.

bring up white trophy wifes to most black women an back the heck out of the way.

times have changed. its now the black’s who seem to be the most racist group going.

at one time whites had the kkk. now blacks have the bca, jet mag, black tv, black this an black that. roles have reversed. heaven forbid somebody starts a white only club.

hey tired… have you listened to gansta rap and hip hop? white folks dont need to say anything bad about black people. those gansta rap folks who p** on black women and call the b*** an ho’s do it for us.

white people are so trying to deal with white guilt for something that happened over 50 years ago that they dont even have time to be racist.

in recruiting … that is a joke.

we have 2 4 star players and 2 3 star players in next years class.

we havent signed favors and we probably wont sign favors.

we had 4 nba players on our one n done team couple years back. we had 3 five star players crit young and clinch… and aminu and dickey were 4 star players. west AND morrow were good enough to play themselves into the nba yet…. we went one n done.

let me repeat that…. we had 3 5 star players 2 4 star players and 2 3 star players good enough to play in the nba AND we went one and done.

we will lose 2 five star players and 2 4 star players from this team an gain….

2 4 star players and 2 3 star players.

sorry but while this is a nice class it is by no means banner. even if favors signs with gt its still only a top 20 team at best. ph has done less with more than that.

sad thing is next years excuse dejour will be…. ’ we need to give ph ONE MORE YEAR because this team is soooooooo young.’

btw something to think about. the team we got beat by on sunday… uva. started 3 freshmen and a soph yet they beat us on our court.

dont you get it? it wont matter how many stars our players have if we dont have a coach who knows how to coach them into a team.

sheeeeesh.

who can make it at gt by going beyond the test scores?

your joking right?

lets see… bosh crit young didnt graduate.

dickey was flunking out so he took his baby’s mama to the ukraine for semi pro ball but i guess that didnt pan out cause he was at the game sunday. hmmmmm.

clinch got caught cheating last year and was suspended. this year he missed the start of the season due to acedemics.

tarver didnt graduate.

we had two guys … one from france and the other from africa that didnt graduate either. ph ran them off after he found out they were lazy.

southal one of ph’s finds got put in jail for dealing drugs so he never made it to campus. thank god.

lewis and moore from our o4 run were bobby c recruites.

id love for somebody to show us exactly what ph and his extra special super stupendus student atheletes have done in the classroom in 9 years here.

i dont see that ph has much to brag about. add his crappy coaching and you wonder wtf braineless was thinking.

Hey “ph finds students “,

Dude, you are spot-on! Hewitt rode the coat tails of the late Cremins classes into the Big Dance. Almost all of his players leave early, never getting through the “core curriculum”, much less a major and degree. It’s too bad that PH sold his soul to the Devil and hung his career on the backs of immature one-and-doners. In the beginning of his regime, I had high hopes for him and for TECH. He seems unable to find talent wanting an education, loyal to the school, and that can shoot free throws.

I think we all need to quit with all the black and white issues. I am black and have completed my bachelor’s and master’s while in serving in the military. I am still in the military and “No” I did not go to any military academy. I went in as an E-1. We can argue about blacks and whites all we want but the bottom line is some issues has to do with society and the economy. Most in my opinion has to do with the person themselves. You have to want to make a difference in youself for the better. I am not taking up for either side. Being in the military I have seen both sides struggle and those that improve themselves is those that want to change. Last thing all the black and white talk in the world is not going to solve our qb’s lack of accuracy, our lack of intensity on defense, us not being prepared to play LSU and PH’s terrible recruiting (lack of depth) and coaching. I do not care what color the coach is as long as he can coach. So, PH need to be replaced and the Defensive Coordinator need to be replaced if he does not improve next year. We can blame it on youth but, when you have LB’s dive tackling and corner’s playing 15 yards off the wr it is going to be tough.

Marvin Lewis, a Bobby Cremins recruit, Mario West, a Walk On, both graduated Tech. Besides these two players Hewitt has not had another black basketball player graduate under his regime. Now some may have came back and graduated but none on time. Under Cremins, Hammonds and Oliver both graduated on time.

It’s amusing to see how confused the general masses are regarding race and finance. GA Tech’s endured an exhibition void speed & overall football prowess vs. LSU. The most explosive players are of color and GA Tech doesn’t have enough to compete. College Football equates to ticket sales, tv contracts, gate revenues, and bowl game revenues. GA Tech got their fannies whipped, but I’m sure they didn’t leave the $7-$9 Million dollar Chik-Fil-A check at the GA Dome. Division 1 Football revenue drives the economy for all college campuses and pays for most the programs, that are created for the white masses. Let alone all of the tenured professors, who in great abundance are white or Indian. The black population at GA Tech is less than 1 percent, but between football and basketball, they equate for 50% of all revenues. GA Tech or UGA lowering their GPA or SAT scores has helped white and black athletes alike, but black athletes are always positioned as the one’s in need of the assistance the most. Given the time alloted to making these university millions, players should be given an opportunity for tutors and mentors to graduate. After all they’ve done to keep these machines in motion, at least they should get there degree, for what they sacrifice. If you are that upset, remove blacks from Div-1 schools, place them at all Black Colleges, and see how fast the dynamics at white universities would change. You would empower a race of educated and financially secure blacks, not in need of your eliteous degrees or jobs. You would create a self-sufficient race void of prejudice. Since we know this will won’t happen anytime soon, why don’t all races work collectively to make all people and universities better, not just have concerns when it affects their community. Blacks need better role models and favorable/stable family situations, so I not placing our responsibility on white America, but the woes of slavery has reared its ugly woes to financial and educational inbalances. Provide equal educational opportunities at elementary, middle school, and high school levels, and you can do away with reducing your entrance standards at the college level. Bottom line, GA Tech need african-american players and those players need the degree. So, let’s all get along and better America and stop pointing the finger!! Point the finger in the mirror and hold that person accountable!

first, I am black, a tech graduate, and was a scholarship athlete in a varsity sport at tech.

i think it is really sad that the few black athletes mentioned above have to represent all black athletes at tech. all the “they” and “those people” used above is just really sad. Nobody says anything about the white athletes who do steroids and recreational drugs (yes at tech). Why arent those kids representatives for their race? it is just black athletes who are branded. i think that is a little biased.

and furthermore as long as those black athletes are scoring touchdowns and making threes, nobody has anything to say. Everyone is cheering for them when they are scoring for the team, but when they make a decision to go make money using their talent, that is when people want to talk. Lets not be so biased people.

hewitt is more concerned with his social agenda than he is winning basketball games…..he was NOT hired to be a social worker and get black kids a college degree…he was hired to win basketball games as a head basketball coach….if he wants to keep this social agenda; move him into the AA office….then go hire a coach that wants to WIN!….its sad to see this program continually sink into mediocrity…..

I agree with Hewitt that black kids from the poorer societies really struggle in college. Why? They’ve never had education as high priorities in their lives. Why does Duke do better than most? It’s because Coach K looks for kids that are from middle class families that have made education a priority, and he graduates nearly all of his kids. North Carolina once had the same attitude toward recruiting student-athletes. Dean Smith had a reputation with his players to graduate, and many came back to school and graduated, even if they went to the pros early. Michael Jordan, came back almost every summer and took the course he needed to graduate. He’s said before that his degree is one of the most important things he’s ever received.

Has nothing to do with race.

CPH has underachieved for years, that’s why he should be under serious review from DRad.

And this white-black stuff? When Clinch cheated a couple years back on a final, who took it for him? A white scholarship athlete from the baseball team. Wake up, these are 18-22 year old kids who will make some mistakes. Does CPH (or CPJ or CDH) make sure they learn from them? That’s the real question.

Some of y’alls responses REEK of racism though, and for that, I hope you stay home and away from GT and its sporting events.

If you don’t think Paul Hewitt doesn’t have a racial agenda then answer me this question. Since he has been at Ga. Tech, how many white scholarship players has he recruited and signed? Causey doesn’t count as he was a transfer. And don’t say that whites can’t play basketball look at duke they’re #2 in the country…….
