Two former UGA recruits have success at other schools

Schools don’t make their minimum [college entrance] requirements public, in part because specific minimums don’t always exist. Instead, admissions decisions occur case by case, using high school GPA, standardized test scores and other, non-numerical factors, such as recommendations from teachers and counselors.
At Georgia, a faculty committee reviews the applications of those recruits who would not be admitted if not for their athletic talent. About 10 to 15 percent of all Bulldogs athletes get admitted through that process, said Nancy McDuff, the university’s associate vice president for admissions and enrollment management.
That committee refers borderline decisions to the president. About 10 percent of athletes get into school that way, McDuff said.
Sometimes, rejections become public knowledge.
Receiver Jamar Bryant twice signed with Georgia but couldn’t get in even after attending Hargrave Military Academy after high school. He went on to lead East Carolina University in receiving last season. Linebacker Jamar Chaney, denied admission to Georgia after questions were raised about his standardized test score, led Mississippi State University in tackles in 2007.
Note: These are excerpts taken from a series of AJC investigative articles written by Mike Knobler. “While it’s commonly known that admission standards are different for athletes, the AJC study quantifies how wide the gap is between athletes and the general student body at major universities.” To read all the articles in full length, please click here. I think all admission standards at each given university should remain the same for everyone and not lower their standard for any reason.Every single student should be admitted or not based on the same exact criteria.

Hey Athony, with that theory alone, no one would get a second chance in america, this is what makes this country so great! Congratulations to the young fellows, and hope they can take it to the next level. Anthony let’s hope that one day when you want something and you and the other guy have the same credentials it may be your smile or personality that takes you higher, but judging on your closed minded comment I doubt that!!!

and the point of this article is? i guess the OL that transferred from Florida to Miss. State is a major issue. This is a joke. It is much like GT having rings made for the UGA win. If UGA did that, the players would look like Mr. T. Why is one win such a big deal? GT has an inferiority complex. You will never equal up to UGA.

Mike, My “theory” as you called it does not prevent anyone from having a second chance. It just assures everyones hard work will be equally rewarded the first time. Also we are talking about college and university admissions here not acting classes. There are not really alot of personal interviews. Besides Mike I did not say anything about people having the same credentials. Only that the institution should not pick students for reasons other than their accademic fit and merit for that particular institution.

Anthony, your argument is valid except for one point, those football players bring something that the run of the mill student does not….money! These athletes generate millions of dollars for their schools. Money that is used to support other athletic programs at the school, fund scholarships for other deserving students and giving this institution national exposure. It takes all types of students to make up a student body, but it takes good athletes to make up a winning athletic program. Hell, they even have differing criteria for admission for other regular students. There has to be some sort of happy medium on this issue.

Chad,
You know that you and the rest of the Techies are pathetic nerds that have been picked on your whole life. That is why you like Tech in the first place. You win 1 out of 8 games and your team gets a ring. If that isn’t a frigging joke I don’t know what is. Have you even seen a girl walking around the Tech campus that isn’t from Asia? Just wondering Loser.

I think the ‘ring’ thing is hilarious!! To know that beating UGA means that much to GT is great. It just tells me that they want to remember something because it’s expected to be a ‘one time’ experience —the same reason that every other ring is made (graduation, bowl game,Super Bowl, etc.)

us87, I know you are right about the money. In the long run I do not think that what I have suggested will change all of your points all that much. But I think that there would be an adjustment period. I enjoy football myself I just think we would have a better system with what I suggested.

this is why we haven’t won our 6th national championship YET. The UGA principal won’t let good students in because their grades have to be the level of the ivee leagues - becuase that is they type of school work UGA has. Football players can’t be that good at their school work like regular UGA students

I agree with Anthony. This nation is slipping because its not about doing it right the first time anymore, its always about “the second chance”. Your this (mean) and your that (racist) if u dont give po ole Willy a second/third/fourth chance. His momma didnt love him, His daddy wasnt around. His brothers and sisters sold drugs. He ran with a bad crowd, but NOW he has his life together…….please, enough. How many strikes at the plate do athletes get? Oh, let us not forget how much someone has to PAY at Tech or UGA if they cant play football. but thats a whole nutha topic. Until everyone is held to the same standard academic-wise, this will be a never ending debate. neither Tech or UGA should use that excuse….one way or the other. But on a positive note, who would unload all the trucks at Walmart if we didnt have all these UGA football washouts…….they are contributing .
