Recruiting not always even for UGA and Georgia Tech

Just because schools compete in the same conference doesn’t mean they recruit from the same athlete pool.

Consider ACC men’s basketball.

An Atlanta Journal-Constitution study of public university admissions standards showed Georgia Tech players had a conference-best average high school GPA of 3.0. Florida State’s had a conference-worst 2.56. Tech players’ average SAT of 948 ranked third in the ACC but was still 78 points ahead of Florida State’s league-worst 870.

Unfair? No, says Paul Hewitt, Georgia Tech’s coach.

“We don’t have a problem recruiting against our competition. I learned a long time ago not to begrudge anybody their situation,” he said, adding that each university needs to stay true to its mission and that he buys into Georgia Tech’s.

Georgia football players averaged 59 SAT points higher than their SEC rivals at Florida. Georgia’s football SAT scores ranked second among the SEC’s public schools, behind only Kentucky’s.

In SEC men’s basketball, though, only Mississippi State’s 832 average SAT ranked below Georgia’s 845. (Georgia’s scores are from the freshman classes of 1997-99, which means they cover players recruited by former coach Ron Jirsa.)

The universities reported only average SAT scores, not player-by-player numbers, so the figures don’t show exactly how low a score a school was willing to accept.

Schools don’t make their minimum requirements public, in part because specific minimums don’t always exist. Instead, admissions decisions occur case by case, using high school GPA, standardized test scores and other, non-numerical factors, such as recommendations from teachers and counselors.

At Georgia, a faculty committee reviews the applications of those recruits who would not be admitted if not for their athletic talent. About 10 to 15 percent of all Bulldogs athletes get admitted through that process, said Nancy McDuff, the university’s associate vice president for admissions and enrollment management.

That committee refers borderline decisions to the president. About 10 percent of athletes get into school that way, McDuff said.

Sometimes, rejections become public knowledge.

Receiver Jamar Bryant twice signed with Georgia but couldn’t get in even after attending Hargrave Military Academy after high school. He went on to lead East Carolina University in receiving last season. Linebacker Jamar Chaney, denied admission to Georgia after questions were raised about his standardized test score, led Mississippi State University in tackles in 2007.

‘Bypass them and go on’

Most of the time, though, the public never learns the role academic standards play in recruiting.

“There are a lot of kids, kids that sign scholarships at other schools we play in and out of our conference that we couldn’t get in our school here,” Georgia Tech assistant football coach Jeff Monken said. “We just have to bypass them and go on. That may mean we recruit them for a while and say, ‘Let’s hope he gets his grades.’ We get to December, and he gets his first-semester senior grades and we’ve got to let him go.

“I’m sure there are times we’ll get criticized, ‘You guys have been recruiting this kid all along, and then you just dropped him,’ or ‘You recruited this guy all along, and the other school signed him.’ We’re not going to embarrass the kid and say, well actually, he couldn’t get into school.”

Recruiting publications generally don’t take academic qualifications into account when ranking a school’s signing class. Rivals.com did make one adjustment; in addition to its signing day rankings, it now does a second ranking after it knows which players enrolled and which never made it to school. But whether a player is an honors student or barely meets the NCAA academic eligibility minimums doesn’t affect his school’s spot in the rankings.

“The only time a player’s academic standing comes into question with us is when he can’t get into any Division I school,” said Bobby Burton, editor of Rivals.com. “You can’t sit there and know the ins and outs of every single player’s academic situation.”

LOL!!! Now I’ve seen everything!!! At least the Yech officials aren’t as drunk off the kool-aid as their weak fan base. Having a ring made to commemorate a 3 point win over a team you face every year!?!? They must have realized it was a fluke and that gimmicky wishbone offense isn’t going to last. Either that or they know UGA’s defense will not be as wretched ever again. Either that or they realize the losses on Yech’s defense next year will be too much to overcome. The list goes on and on, but at least they were wise enough to make a ring to remind them of the win since its going to be a looooooooooooong time before it ever happens again. LOL, how pathetic can you get?!?!!

Football players are dumbest of all the athletes, wow way to break a “story” ajc! (theres some exceptions like Tim Tebow, but for every Tebow theres 50 Tyrones…or in this case… Jamars)

Like every highschool and college kid dosent already know that football players are the dumbest of all athletes?

How about talking about how young blacks in the south are spreading HIV faster than anywhere else in the country!

Funny that many of the Gtu fans were talking about the Davis kid from Tucker in October while the UGA fans were saying, “grades.”

His recruitment was just summed up by Jeff Monken.

LMAO, T…it does not hurt at all…it will simply refocus the UGA football program to insure that we win the next seven again…there is no such thing as a “rivalry” when one team wins every year…a one year fluke also does not mean that the rivalry will shift, as we have found out against UF a couple of times lately…

Joe, I love to see ugay fans talk about next year. you’re just trying to forget that you got your butts kicked (33-14 in the second half) in your own building by the JACKETS!!! next year you’ll be reminded about it when we beat you again in Atlanta. then you’ll have to make up another excuse for why you don’t want to acknowledge another loss to Ga Tech.

UGA fans laughing about that ring don’t know their own program’s history…you leghumpers retired Theron Sapp’s jersey after he broke GT’s long streak in 1957. His jersey is retired along with greats such as Frank Sinkwich, Charley Trippi and Herschel Walker…because he was the “Drought Breaker”.

Joe & Reality Yech obviously do not think UGA vs. Florida is a rivalry since Florida beats UGA like a drum almost EVERY year! Grow up and stop sounding like a couple of freak’n idiots.

Reality Yech sounds like a complete moron. Every post I have ever seen by this “troubled” individual is utterly useless. He posts first on almost every topic………this fact alone suggests he has no life, no friends and nothing better to do with his time. Seems rather pathetic to me. His posts do not bother me; I have learned to simple ignore anything he submits and enjoy the posts which include iteresting comments. Good luck finding a little peace and happiness Mr. Reality Yech (he is probably the same moron as the Yeller skeeter peter eater idiot).

If I was an ACC team I would hate competing against a certain team ranked lower academically than any other conference school by U. S. News and World Report. This “institution” also has the advantage of being coached by a senile, demented, cornpone who has no idea of what is going on around him and is therefore oblivious to any indiscretions. Their coaching staff is made up of one assistant who in former job dressed as if he was auditioning for a Key West parade, another guy looks like a lizard spitting out vermin and the upper level assistant is wondering what he got himself into. I’m not naming any names.

Don’t be too hard on the Guys. The ring is fine way to remember 45-42. Much better than a drunk driving ticket in Athens or driving w/o a lisence don’t you think. Missing the first 2 games because you can’t follow instructions or stay out of trouble.

GT Grad,

If Joe and Reality’s posts don’t bother you then why go to all the trouble to address them? You seem very bitter and bent out of shape over their posts. Does the truth hurt that bad? History lesson for you. When Tech beat UGA 8 in a row, UGA’s program was in the worst shape in program history. Only 3 winning seasons and 2 bowl appearances over the same stretch. That would be like Tech bragging about beating Samford 8 years in a row. However, while UGA was defeating Tech 7 years in a row Tech had winning seasons each year and played in bowl games as well. Far more impressive. And I won’t even bother with the head-to-head count. And yes, making a ring for beating a team that you play every season by a mere 3 points is quite gay.

Wrecksince50,

I’d take a kid getting drunk occasionally and driving without a license over a rapist and FBI busted druglord. I heard Tech posterboy Hamilton just got arrested again.

Uptown Dawg, a record is a record, no matter who the competition was or is. Why don’t you forget the record and just concentrate on the next game? As far as next November, we wont know who won until the game is over. Can you understand that, or is it over your head?

The ring is the most pathetic thing I’ve ever seen a team do after a rivalry game. That is the lamest thing anyone could even begin to think of after getting your butts handed to you for 7 straight years. Act like you’ve been there Tech. And this is from another ACC school alum/fan not a dog.

If I understood the article correctly, it was the players decision to have the score “45-42” engraved into their rings, not Georgia Tech’s. As far as I can tell, it’s their ring, they can engrave what they’d like into it to remember this season by…they earned that right.

By joe

As part of its bowl bounty, Tech is giving each player a ring. Coach Paul Johnson left the design of ring to the team’s seniors. He said the seniors decided to include the score of the Georgia game, 45-42, in the ring’s design. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Bulldogs.

So, you are correct…BUT the school is giving them the rings to commemorate the win. Yes, GT is giving the players the rings…all the players did was design it. The lame-a## athletic department came up with the idea for a ring. Its bad enough players get rings for meaningless bowl games…why don’t we give them a ring every time they make a start? Rings are for championships not regular season wins! LAME!

Hey Uptown Dawg,

I have posted MANY times on the various AJC Blogs and almost all of my posts have been positive. I do not have a history of negative responses, but I figured these two deserved a quick response for reality purposes. Ignorant posts really do not bother me; I just like to set the record straight and/or bring a little perspective to counter some of the more “over-the-top” comments.

By the way……..you mentioned the overall UGA vs. GT record, but failed to indicate the overall record is 59-39 in favor of UGA. This means UGA has won 60% and GT has won 40%. Not quit as dominating as most/many UGA fans would like to think. Maybe this is why you failed to list the actual record?

I agree the ring issue seems a little childish, but the GT PLAYERS decided as a group to include 45-42 in the ring design. This is a big deal as was evidenced with the retiring of the UGA player’s jersey when UGA finally beat GT after 8 GT wins in a row. The UGA player was not a super star, he simply played a critical role in the crucial win against GT, so they retired his jersey. That seems a little over the top to me (especially since the UGA vs. GT rivalry is “supposedly” not very important to UGA fans).

Good luck to UGA in the bowl game against Michigan State.

Go GT! Beat LSU like a drum!!

HAVING A RING MADE FOR A 3 POINT WIN IS ABOUT THE MOST RIDICULOUS THING I HAVE EVER HEARD OF. I KNOW YOU TECHSTERS ARE A BUNCH OF GEEKS AND NERDS BUT THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE! THE ONLY BUMBLEBEE AT MY OFFICE IS COVERING HIS HEAD IN EMBARASSMENT OVER THIS ONE!

To all the UGA fans thinking the ring is “ridiculous” or whatever other adjective you want to use to describe it, maybe you should go read the article about the ring. That is assuming you know how to read. It says the ring is to commemorate the season and that “45-42” is included in the ring design. It is not a ring to solely commemorate the win against UGA.

By UptownDawg

GT GRAD,

You claim to dislike “ignorant” posts while you just made one of the most ignorant post I think I’ve ever read on here. To say a 20 game lead in a head-to-head series isn’t dominating has to be taken either as smarta$$ sarcasm or flatout stupidity. So I’ll leave it to you to explain which it is. 60% of anything is a large majority. Take any election. Any candidate that wins by 60% wins in an overwhelming landslide. I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were teasing in hopes of some sympathy.

Again, when Tech had their run it was in the 1940’s, long before your parents were probably even born. The series was still somewhat new. That was over half a century ago. The retiring of Sapp’s jersey was almost exactly 50 years ago. To compare anything sports related to events that happened towards the middle of the last century is a bit desperate. And that non-superstar happened to be the Philadelphia Eagles starting running back on their 1960 NFL Championship team. So not too shabby.

Bottomline, rings are for marriage and championships, Tech did neither.

Lol, talk about not having a life or any friends!!!

Poor little tool Yechie. Even with a MASSIVE 3 point win they’re all still miserable. LOL, its sad you thought that momentary success on the gridiron would bring you happiness, but looks like that proved false as well. You’re miserable because you’re a friendless Yechie, lol, get a clue!!

Go make a ring or something, LOL!!! ACC, currently at .500 in bowl play after 6 gams, LOL!!! PATHETIC!!!

Different strokes for different folks

My first year after graduating from Tech there was a boy that worship with us that was a really good football player. I contacted Coach Dodd. He had the high school coach send highlight films and after reviewing them he invited the boy to Tech. Nothing happened for a while and I called. Coach Dodd said the boy is a tremendous football player BUT he will never pass Calculus. All Tech’s disciplines require calculus to graduate. The boy went on to be all conference and played for the LA Rams for several years. I revisited this town and drove by this man’s farm and listen to friends tell what a good man he was. Some people just don’t have the mind to handle math, science. That’s why we have liberal arts schools and technical schools. Coach Dodd left the SEC because he said he could not find enough good football players to stay competitive. I am glad that basket waving is no longer a credited course at the liberal arts schools. I wish they were all like Vandy.
