Alpharetta’s Williams makes school history with commitment

Vince Williams committed to Western Kentucky, becoming the first player in Alpharetta’s history to pledge to Div. I school.

The 5-foot-10, 175-pound cornerback, who also plays some slot back, joins only about a half dozen Raiders who’ve signed in the high school’s four seasons of existence.

Williams chose the Hilltoppers over Ball State, Akron, Central Michigan and Delaware. He officially visited Division 1-AA Western Kentucky first, before Akron and Ball State, and felt the Hilltoppers’ communications program suited his interest in sports broadcasting.

“I liked my position coach (Travaris Robinson) a lot, too,” Williams said. “I liked his approachability and the way he made me feel like I was part of the team, even though I hadn’t committed yet.

“He made me see how important it was for a corner to have fun out there and enjoy himself. He said if you have fun when you’re playing, you can be competitive and successful.”

Williams had 52 tackles, 12 pass breakups, two interceptions and a fumble recovery for Region 6-AAAAA Alpharetta (3-7) this season. He also caught 14 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns, as well as rushed 11 times for 115 yards.

“(Williams) is a top-rate-character kid,” Alpharetta coach Bill Waters said. “He’s going to go far. He’s not yet as good as he’s going to be.”
