UGA-bound QB Aaron Murray completes amazing comeback with state championship
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Categories
Quarterback Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla., has yet to step on UGA’s campus, but is already approaching legendary status in the Bulldog Nation.
With UGA defensive coordinator Willie Martinez watching on, Murray finished off an improbable comeback in dazzling style, leading Plant High to a 34-14 win over Lincoln in Saturday’s Florida Class AAAA championship at Orlando’s Citrus Bowl.
Murray completed 18 of 30 passes for 344 yards and three touchdowns, according to the Tampa Tribune. He also had one interception.
“I never thought I would put on a Plant uniform again after I got hurt,” Murray told the Tribune. “I had a lot of people helping me to get back, and I’m glad I did because this is special.”
Murray, who committed to UGA over 53 scholarship offers, suffered what was thought to be a season-ending leg injury on Oct. 16. Doctors expected Murray to be out for 3-4 months, but Murray pushed himself as hard as possible, and returned in seven weeks. He made his comeback in the state semifinals, throwing a touchdown on his very first pass.
In Saturday’s championship, Murray’s top target was tight end Orson Charles, who caught six passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns. Charles is entertaining an offer from Miami, along with Georgia and Florida.
Back to Murray: There were concerns among some Georgia fans that he may have rushed back too soon. However, UGA coach Mark Richt called Murray this week to both endorse his decision to play and wish him well in the championship.
“He [Richt] said if he was in the same situation, he would definitely be playing, too,” Murray said. “He said you never know how life works out, and you may never again get to play for a championship. And if you have the chance to play for one, you’ve got to go for it.”
Doctors gave Murray the clearance to play the week of the semifinals, providing that he heavily wrap up his left ankle. In 21 career starts at Plant, Murray set a county record with 84 touchdown passes, breaking the mark previously held by celebrated South Carolina quarterback Stephen Garcia.

Damn, I can’t believe he was able to walk, let alone play in a state championship football game after the leg injury he had 2 months ago. I thought he broke his leg in 2 places or something…that’s amazing. Can’t wait to see him play between the hedges!

If you’re coming to the Mutts, and Florida is still in the SEC East, then your future coach told you the TRUTH. You DEFINITELY WILL NOT ever again get to play for a championship!!
However, Capital One and Outback Bowls are fun, fun, fun!!

All these Florida fans and tech fans forget where they were last year. Florida was 9-3, going to the Capital One Bowl to lose to a bad Michigan team. Tech was losing for the 7th time in a row. Now you all want to hate because Richt again lands the best QB in the nation. I can hear the trembling from here… Let me pull one from you guy’s book, UGA lost to Florida this year because Stafford bent back his pinky nail on his non-throwing hand and they lost to Tech because he failed speech class.

the thing you should consider is that there were 28 UGA grads on NFL 53 man rosters week one of the season.
that’s quite a lot! But what do you have to show for it? 2 SEC titles in 25 years? Florida has 10 and has been kicking the doggies around for years. This year’s game was an a*-whoopin. We are playing for ANOTHER national championship.

Hello Delusional Dawg Fans!
1) The Gators have more NFL players than Georgia. Go look it up.
2) Stafford will be a better NFL QB than Tebow. But who cares? We’re talking college football right? Tebow, 1 SEC title, 1 Heisman and 1 year to go. Stafford, no SEC titles, no heisman, and bye bye after this year.
3) Georgia gets great talent year after year…..but do you really think Richt gets all that he can from that talent? Does he get the best out of his players?

Re: Gator Nation
Since you got me intrigued, I went ahead and looked up how many players each university has playing in the NFL. They rank as follows:
There are several schools in the 30 to 39 range, including: USC, Tennessee, & Texas.
Still doesn’t change the fact that UF is a haven for great (semi-great) college quarterbacks who are horrible pros…Weurfel, Grossman, that guy from the Bachelor, and soon to be Tebow. Over-hyped and over exposed (to mullets at least)!

3 is a larger number than 2.
We won in 2000, 2006, and 2008.
You won in 2003 and 2005.
What do you mean by better man? If you mean football coach, then yes I think Urban is better than Richt and I can gather the data to support this if you want me too.
If you mean is he a better person then I think you are truly delusional. I don’t know either coach well enough to make that assessment. I think Mark Richt is a great person from what I have seen and read. I think Urban Meyer is a great person from what I have seen and read.
Do I think he will be the Florida coach in 2010? Absolutely. You just don’t understand the Notre Dame thing, because all you read is the AJC.
Don’t you think that Richt should have won an SEC title either last year or this year? Do you really think he gets the most out of his players?

Thats players in the NFL, not the score of this years game.
Impressive number by Georgia. It, ofcourse, doesn’t prove that Richt is better than Meyer. It just may prove the opposite.
But hey, lets not lose our focus.
Were talking about college football
And in college football, Florida is currently and for the last 20 years the better program. It may hurt to hear that, but the truth is often painful for those who avoid it.

To all you amateur recruiting coordinators: kids pick schools where they are most likely to get a chance to compete and start immediately. At Georgia this kid can compete for the starter role as Stafford is going to leave and nobody is there to take over right away. If he picked Florida he would have to sit behind Tebow and Brantley next year and sit behind Brantley for the following two years. His decision was a no brainer. It had nothing to do with any allegiance to Georgia at all. Strictly business…

I am a life-long GT fan and my daughters are third generation GT graduates. I live in Tampa and my youngest is in classes with Aaron at Plant High School. He is an intelligent, respectful kid who is not impressed with himself. I think he leaves Tampa after Christmas to enroll early at UGA. Altough not very tall, he is a fabulous QB at the prep level. If he gets any coaching he will be every bit as good as Stafford. Plant won the State two years ago with Robert Marve (now the starting QB at Miami) as the QB. Murray is already Marve’s equal as a player, and light-years ahead of him in character. UGA got itself a real winner in Aaron Murray; I will always remain a Tech fan, but could never pull against Murray. He may not actualize as a college QB, but he will be a solid citizen. UGA could use more like him, don’t you think?

This forum cracks me up - Tech is 1-7 and their fans are talking smack, and UF fans have to come and make snide remarks. FYI - some Dog fans did go to school in Athens, 1981-1984, and I believe we were 4-0 against UF then.
Yes, in my opinion that’s ancient history, and so is this year’s game…to quote a favorite line from an otherwise bad movie “What’s behind me is not important”. I’m not going to waste time explaining the context or faking the Italian accent to deliver it properly, it makes the point.
Does anyone here that posts these stupid comments in a moronic effort to “get our goat” and draw a response from UGA fans, most of whom should have better things to do, do any of you guys have a life? The only reason I wasted this much time on you was because I can type really fast.
Read what you wrote, and realize how pathetic you all sound. As for my fellow Dawgs, just read the articles and skip the comments, and maybe these idiots will go away and you can discuss this crap to your heart’s content without distraction. I would suggest you also have better things to do, but that’s just my opinion.

All this talk about Richt and Championships or lack thereof, got me thinking. Since UGA hired Richt, which SEC program has more SEC Titles?
That’s the barometer right there. No beauty contest, no vote, no having to have huge upsets at the end of the year to get you into the game.
I think in the last 8 years, LSU/UGA/FU have 2 each. I could be wrong, but I think that’s it.
Anyways, it’s obvious that this Kid from Florida committing to play in Athens is under the skin of a few Gator fans…the few classy ones who wished him luck, College Football needs more fans like you.

Also,i live near Destin and work in a sporting goods store, and it is amazing how many fans from other SEC and ACC teams are looking for OKLAHOMA gear. Guess its true, gator fans are the most hated, not because of the team or school, which are really excellent, but because most i have met never went to Florida, much less high school, and are too ignorant to discuss football, or really anything ! maybe thats why your coach wants to go to a school that at least have intelligent fans

I live in Florida as well and I am a huge bulldog fan, but I have to agree with Max. I wasnt that impressed. His receivers did all the work. All of the yards came after the receivers made great catches. I was more impressed with Orson Charles. He was the best player on the field clearly. Yes Aaron has a lot of tools, but will he be coached up by the Georgia coaching staff? Lookp at what happened to Stafford all thge tools in the world, but clearly he lacked acurracy at times while often throwing off the wrong foot. Aaron did a lot of that yesterday. I think this guy will be starting his sophomore year and if he gets proper coaching, he can be better than Stafford and do great things.

It is so amusing to see the stupidity exhibited by some these “fans”. It is great that a kid can comeback from an injury. It is great that he can go to a school on a football scholarship. I just find it comical that some of these short-term memory afflicted dorks have already got this kid with a national championship and he hasn’t even played one down of college ball. That’s the reason you morons are always whining at the end of most of the past 20 seasons. Reality bites and so do you.

Hey Gator nation and the rest of you crooks, criminals, and Tech idiots.
If the pros aren’t important why did you list it number 1 in yourlist. Stafford and UGA kicked your precious Tbag, and car thief Harvin 1 out of two. Most teams don’t fair that well against those who aspire to further educational opportunites at the Starke Fl campus (prison for those of you that have a UF diploma)
Everyone knows that Urban Meyer is an advisor to Usama Bin Laden, and gets his pay from Caesar Chavez.
THIS IS HOW ABSURD SOME OF YOU PEOPLE ARE. WHY NOT JUST SAY GOOD THINGS ABOUT EACH OTHER. YOU CAN LOOK UP ANY FACT ON THE INTERNET AND GET 5 DIFFERNT ANSWERS. IT IS OBVIOUS THAT UF WILL STOMP OU IN A HOMEGAME MNC GAME. ENJOY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, Gator Fans do the numbers 47-38-2 mean anything to you? That just happens to be the series record between the Dawgs and the Gators. Guess who has the 47? It ain’t the Gators. Funny how all the Gator fans just want to talk about things since 1990 (since they won 16 of the last 19). That only shows how the Dawgs dominated in the many years before that (44-22-2). Gators, WIN 9 MORE STRAIGHT GAMES AND THEN WE CAN TALK.

I attended all the Florida High School Championship games. You could tell Murray wasn’t 100%. He was rusty; but he really needs to work on decision-making and accuracy. I can’t say it was because he was rusty either as I saw him play in the second game of the year and he was inconsistent in a loss. He does have the tools to be a good one; but he’s need some work. Orson Charles would be a huge asset..he’s a tough kid. I was really glad to see Bobo and Martinez recruiting the three kids from Seminole who upset Miami Northwestern for the 6A final. We could sure use Day at DE; hopefully CWM can snag him. Armstrong and Dubose were clearly men playing against boys; and that’s saying alot since Northwestern has won the past two 6A finals down here. Dubose can step in and return kicks and punts right now. I’m just happy to see the UGA coaches trying to steal some talent away from the Florida schools.

With Meyer’s offense he’ll never have another Heisman QB again, it just wont happen. Only reason Tebow was FORCED to carry the ball so much last year was because they had zero ground game. Tebow is a freak, and as Meyer has said himself, “a once in a lifetime opportunity to coach a kid of his talents.”
UGA now has a stable of QB’s. Don’t write of Gray yet either. He had a great spring and has done very well in practice. Great problem to have if you’re a Dawg!!!

Hey pdk. You said, “Bulldog boosters, outside Clarke Co., nobody cares about UGA.” Let’s see… the largest Bulldog booster club is located in… Jacksonville. Hey, that’s in Florida… about 60 miles from YOUR campus. It looks like, outside Alachua county, many people don’t care much for the Gainesville Lizzards.

It is a SAD SAD SAD time in the bullpup nation. Relegated to snipping, crying, and namecalling. You’re getting quite adept at it, no surprise though. When your team has FAILED to live up to your OVERBLOWN expectations year in and year out, you become what your FEAR the most, you have become what the rest of the world knows as GATORBAIT. Now the rest of the SEC and even some of the ACC teams know your little secret too, your yip-yip, is worse than your bite.

Are we DAWG fans forgeting we have a defensive coordinator that gives up about 40 points a game. Forget about our offense. That’s only half the ball game. Meyer will kill us every year with that defense we have. He’s loves it. Richt is blind to it! I agree with the Gators, we are an 8-2 team at best every year. GET USE TO IT!

A few observations:
As far as Florida “owning” Georgia, let’s check some history, both recent and overall. I believe that Georgia has beaten Florida 2 times in the past 5 games, and still owns a considerable lead in the overall series. 5 of the last 7 games have been decided by a touchdown or less (6 of 7 by two TD’s or less). I hardly think that this constitutes “domination” or “owning” or anything similar.
I’ll certainly have to congratulate Florida on the way your team has finished, so “congratulations”. Florida has had a nice run in this series over the past few years, it’s true. Georgia has had such runs in this series as well……..and will again. Florida fans, enjoy it while you can. The pendulum will swing back, as it invariably does.
On Georgia’s loss to Georgia Tech, after SEVEN consecutive victories in that series, yes it was a true embarrassment to us - somewhat similar to Florida’s loss to Ole Miss at home. That game sparked Florida’s team to greater things, similar to how our loss to a declining Tennessee program last year did - we didn’t lose again last season after that loss, and the same could happen for Florida this year. We did finish #2 last year…….Florida was lower, if I remember correctly.
I’ll have to say I agree with Jim, referring to some of these ridiculous posts. Some of the Florida fans who posted needed to check their class level - it’s a quart low.
I’m calling out writer Michael Carvell. WHY the italics on the comment that Mark Richt made about Aaron Murray playing in his HS championship game because such a game is special and “you may never again get to play for a championship” ??? The italics make it look like Richt is making some sort of negative statement about the future. Did it occur to the writer that Richt was making a pragmatic statement about opportunities in life ? Like if the young man has a career-ending injury in college and never gets to play again ? I have a real issue with writers who take every opportunity to stir up something negative even when there isn’t really anything negative. I’ve read so much negativity and “humor” about UGA from AJC writer Jeff Schultz that I now simply refuse to read anything that he writes (haven’t in about 2 years).
Further, I read a headline on here last week in which it was proclaimed that a HS prospect “chose Tech over Georgia”, despite that fact that Georgia hadn’t even offered the young man a scholarship !! What sort of journalistic integrity is THAT ? I know this - if I practiced Pharmacy according to such standards, I’d lose my license to practice. Perhaps we need more oversight of professional standards compliance for “journalists” - obviously some changes are needed. I’m NOT taking issue with ALL AJC writers - some are good (Bradley, Towers, Barnhart, etc) and I appreciate those. Some of the others appear to have an ax to grind, which undermines their credibility.
Has Georgia had a disappointing year ? Absolutely. We appear to have underachieved in several areas, particularly defensively. But you know what ? We finished #2 just last year. We’ve won 10 or more games in 5 of the last 6 years, with another 10-win year achievable with a win over Michigan State. We’ve won two SEC championships and been to three BCS/Sugar Bowls so far this decade. There’s a LOT to be proud of - not many programs can match that, so let’s keep a little perspective here. There’s also a lot of work to do to elevate our performance to greater heights, but we can get it done. Nobody cruises every year.

UGA will be just fine next year and the year after that and the year after that and so on and so on. It is funny how 10-3 is a down year for UGA and and a 9-4 record is a up year for Tech.haha As long as UGA has Richt as coach he will have UGA in the hunt for a title year in and year out.UGA is getting closer and closer to putting that perfect team to win the National title. OUR D will be a year older with even more talent coming in and back to help out where injuries and youth hurt us. where as tech will D will be very weak. im not worried all about tech beating us next year. hell Tech is tech and they will always be tech. the lame 2nd rate football team in the state of Georgia that may win a game over UGA every 7 years. i can take 1 year of trash talking from tech fans. they dont beat UGA enough to get tired of it. haha our coaches will have our players ready for there old school ofeense that will get their QBs killed. and when we have the right personel at the DE we will kick your butts next year just like normal.

First of all, good luck to Florida in the National Championship game. SEC all the way. Now after the title game and Tebow decides to go to the NFL, which I doubt he will, who does Florida have as the next quarterback? I seen the number 2 guy and he’s not very promising. Aaron Murray may have realized that despite what people want to think, Florida will be rebuilding next year offensively. Why go through that headache, especially if he gets redshirted. Not saying that UGA will be in any better shape, but UGA will be a better fit for him than Florida.
If Florida wins the NC, that will be that last championship of any kind for a while.

Does GT have their own blog? They win one game in seven years and all of the sudden they are the best team playing football. Congratulation Tech, you got your one win. Until you win 3 or 4 in a row, you got lucky. The Georgia team that played you in the first half, forgot to come out in the second half, especially the defense, so you got lucky. OOOh the great triple option, you were using the same offense when Reggie Ball was not throwing the ball for Tech. Did I mention, YOU GOT LUCKY.

Murray completed 18 of 30 passes for 344 yards and three touchdowns, according to the Tampa Tribune. He also had one interception.
Looks good in print, however w/ only one good leg he didn’t look anything like he usually does…the 344 yds would have been good for one half and the 18 for 30 was not up to his usual standards…compare the states w/ some of his tapes and you’ll see…Plant lost the first game of the year, not the second as stated earlier…the game they lost was to Armwood and he had been their whole offense (no running game at all except for him) and not until he went down did they start to have a balanced attack…he’ll rehab and get back to making some of the most amazing throws that you’ll ever see a QB make…enjoy the next few years…

I bleed Red and Black and even I have to agree with some of the Florida posts. We have not won a NC in a very long time. We looked very average this year. I really don’t care about the series record against Florida I just know that we lost this year. Since I have been alive Tech has only beat UGA 13 times(I’m 45)So what, they beat us this year and I can’t stand it, but I congratulate Tech. OUCH.
I use to get real excited about all the talent we pull in, but until we are playing for a NC we can’t talk smack to Florida. I mean 2 out of the past 3 years. I hate it, I hate it, but give them credit. But Techies, don’t think for a moment that UGA is going away. You beat us yes, but with the worst defense in UGA history. You only beat us by three. That’s why I feel good about putting another streak together against you. We will improve so just keep dreaming all you want about us going down hill because it won’t happen.
As for Florida, I hate you guys, but you have ever right for your smack talk. Win another one for the SEC!

Yet another great, classy young commitment for the Dawgs. When this kid either wins the Heisman, or is in the running, I’m sure we won’t have to hear humiliating stories about him driving drunk on campus (10 years after he’s left I might add) and committing a hit and run with an open container while being intoxicated and oh yeah, with a little dime bag of weed on him. Hmmm….what piece of trash does that sound like? LOL!!!
