Flowery Branch DE Izaan Cross commits to Georgia Tech

How about those Yellow Jackets?

Georgia Tech’s football program is riding a wave of momentum. The big news on Sunday was Flowery Branch defensive end Izaan Cross committing to the Jackets.

Cross was one of the southeast’s top uncommitted prospects, picking Georgia Tech over Clemson, North Carolina and N.C. State. Earlier in the year, Cross had offers from Oklahoma and Florida State. He announced his college decision after making an official visit to Tech.

“I think this weekend was just icing on the cake,” Cross told the AJC. “Georgia Tech has always been my No. 1.”

“Truthfully, I really thought if it all went well this weekend I would commit. I think I fit in well at Georgia Tech.”

Before leaving campus, Cross broke the news to Tech coach Paul Johnson.

“I told [Johnson] I was going to commit,” Cross said. “Then I started asking him about the academic part and schedule.”

It was Tech’s second major recruiting victory within the last few days, following the commitment of Centennial defensive end Euclid Cummings, who picked the Jackets over North Carolina, with emerging interest from Florida and Georgia. Last Thursday, Cummings was scheduled to visit Georgia’s bowl practice, but canceled the trip and committed to Tech instead.

Tech will be in a BCS Bowl next year

I think Tech SHOULD be 10-2 next year, but we’ll have to see. I’m exuberant and think this program is heading in the right direction. But, don’t forget that Miami, FSU, Clemson, and VT are going to be getting a lot better over the next two years too.

That said, I think in 2010 a 1-loss ACC team can and will play for the NC.

Hey Wes, why does Johnson need 4 years? Richt did it in 2 :)

Hey, RealityYech, What exactly did Richt do in two years—whet the appetites and raise expectations but fail to really deliver? It’s probably been too long for you to remember what a national championship feels like. We at Tech remember, as it wasn’t 28 years ago for us—only 18. And speaking of reality checks, here’s one for you: 45-42. Try that on for size over the next twelve months. And think about how our program is going up, yours isn’t. (But I gotta say, congrats on Aaron Murray, he looks awesome).

Izaan,

As a huge fan of both the Yellow Jackets and the FBHS Falcons, I am tickled to death that you decided to play your home games at Bobby Dodd Stadium. I’m looking forward to great things from you, Daniel, Jaybo, and Connor. Congratulations on reaching the state championship game this year. Let’s hope you can make it to the NATIONAL championship game next year.

With 17 starters returning, 75 freshmen and sophomores on the roster (this season) and the addition of RB Anthony Allen from Louisville, Tech will be a monster team next year. CPJ has barely scratched the surface. As he gets his own players in and is able to implement more of his offense, its going to be a thing of beauty to watch.

Also don’t forget GT is short on scholarships right now as well.

We’ll be back to the full allotment of 85 scholarships after signing this year’s class. No worries there.

Yes Tech will be good on offense. But explain to me how you will have any D line production when you have to replace 3 starters. There are not any players currently on your roster or on the way that have the same talent or ability as Johnson, Richard and Walker. Good luck stopping anybody on defense next season.

emdawg aren’t you one of those that saw Yech at 2 - 10 this year with that high school offense (oh and a nc for the puppy’s). When you’re wrong 99 times out of 100, well…. get a tech grad to explain the ending.
You puppy’s won’t get a luck fumble every year. It’s hard to predict what’ll happen next year. The puppies depending on how many recruits don’t meet the ncaa minimums (why is it no Hargrave players go to Vandy? Ask any Vandy alum), arrest, puppies loose 4 or 5 next year 3rd in the east. reality sucks.

Since moving to Georgia I have never witnessed a hatred for the states team “Georgia” by so many people. Very sad to be honest. The AJC paper as I have learned is a pro GT newspaper. Very intriguing. I can smell a big hype GA Tech year coming on if they win the Chick-fil-a bowl. Tech looks like Georgia two years ago. After cutting the hedges in Athens, which I personally thought was out of character for a CPJ team, next year GA Tech will be 11-1 and GA will be around 8-4, and GA will do to Tech the same favor. Parity of college football. I played against GA Southern four years, teams in the conference catch-up to the option, but CPJ will have a few runs at the offense takes average athletes and produces mind boggling offensive statistics. Problem is that most athletes in the system who go pro, never make it in the NFL. CPJ should win a few ACC titles, a BCS birth. As his track record indicates, when the next big job opens he will make the move. Enjoy the option & run at success while you have it. Dog fans, all good things must come to an end. I believe change will be coming in the next 3 years. As the bar has been set to high in Athens. Will Muschamp will be the new coach as CMR fails to deliver titles to GA, and as the AJC, GA Tech Wreckers & Transients continue to blast the home team. Next 5 years GA Tech 4-1 over Georgia. Then I believe there will be a great reformation of the Georgia program and CPJ will take another job. Follow his track record. CMR will be at FSU or Miami as the new head coach, winning games and spreading the gospel. Merry X-Mas.

VMI:

The AJC is a pro-Tech newspaper?? How LONG have you been in Georgia? I don’t remember the AJC running a story called “Meet the Jackets” this season like they did “Meet the Dogs”.

As for teams “catching up” to the option, I don’t remember him having that problem at Navy. And like he has said, he so far only has about 65% of the offense running now. With a better class of players at Tech compared to Navy, I don’t think that teams will be catching up in the near future.

Plus, how many college players actually make it in the NFL?? I don’t think that is the main reason these kids to to Tech.

VMIKeydet01 - You think the AJC is a pro-GT newspaper? Are you kidding me? Did you happen to notice the “Know Your Dawg” segment they ran ALL SEASON this year? I’ll bet you didn’t notice the “Know Your Yellow Jacket” segment because there wasn’t one. The AJC has been about as pro-UGA as any paper this side of the Red & Black for several years. Open your eyes.

It will be interesting to see what the coverage looks like next year when Tech outranks UGA all season long. Maybe then, we’ll get close to an equal number of column inches.

Spurrier,

I was not one that agreed with the No. 1 pre-season ranking because I knew our O-line was still young and thin. The loss of Sturdivant compounded that and caused more movement and shuffling that doomed any consistent play. I also knew we were in trouble when Jeff Owens went down on the second series of the opening game. He was the emotional leader and was badly missed. That said I was still dissapointed in the play down the stretch. We will be much improved next year due the depth we have stockpiled and developed on both sides. No way Tech wins the next 4 of 5. I never called the offense high school. The offense causes problems for any defense due to unique blocking schemes and unfamiliarity. As time goes by, defenses will make adjustments just like they have for the wishbone, veer and spread. Paul Johnson talks about how he has looked forward to coaching at a program with superior talent like at Tech. With the exception of a few big time recruits each year, Tech has not consistently made inroads with upper level recruits in state or out. Top shelf D-Line and O-Line recruits make the differnce for any team and Tech has not and never will get enough to get to the next level. You will have a nice team that plays physical runs up big rushing numbers. But the upper level WR types will not come. The big contract extension so early in Johnson’s tenure reminds me of the mistake Notre Dame made with Big Charlie. So you put together a nice season against a subpar ACC conference. Everybody else in the ACC is not sitting still waiting for you guys to start a run. VT is back in the championship game again with one of the worst teams Beamer has had in a while. Next year was allways what they were pointing to based on the early decision to redshirt Taylor ot QB. Good luck cause you’re gonna need it! Richt aint goin anywhere and he will continue to dominate the series.

RealityYech. Clearly, Navy has academic AND physical limitations (size limitations required to serve on ships/aircraft/submarins, etc.) that prevent the recruiting opportunities bigger conferences like the SEC/ACC enjoy… Plus, there’s a little thing called commitment (5 years min.) for service in the Navy or Marine Corps. NFL is not around the corner for these guys. That being said, Navy kicked off the Poinsetta Bowl and regularly sells out all of its ticket allotments to all of its bowl games. That doesn’t mean much for quality of bowls, but we enjoy them. If you are honestly comparing Navy to Georgia Tech, I reccommend medication. Georgia Tech will destroy whoever your team is… Georgia? Get used to it. What matters is the score. You talk now, because you can. What about three years from now? You’ll be strangely quiet and dissapointed. No one will hear from you. Time will tell. While Navy had a good year by beating #15 Wake Forest, beating other challenging teams, winning the rival games, and eventually losing to Wake Forest in the D.C. Bowl…one cannot compare the apple Navy is to the orange that Georgia Tech is… You condescendingly demand that Tech fans list off Navy’s accolades while they have absolutely no bearing on Geogia Tech’s success and potential for success. That is the same reason why you cannot compare Georgia Southern’s success prior to Johnson’s departure for Navy. People said he couldn’t do at each successive place he coached. You are wrong Yech.

Good job Hood. Keep bragging about how great of a job PJ is doing bringing in all of these 3 star studs that UGA doesn’t offer. Oh I forgot, Tech doesn’t recruit the same kids UGA does because of the academics. Give me a break, PJ is no different from anyother Tech coach, he goes after the same kids everybody else does. The problem he has, as do all of Tech coaches. THe top tier kids don’t want to visit or commit to the losers. When you write about how great of a pickup these two 3 star studs are, it shows your stupidity as well. Do us all a favor, when the nerds do pickup a stud recruit that UGA, and Fl. offered and wanted, then talk your BS. P.S. the tech fans will believe anything when it comes to recruiting, even your BS

  • Who gives a dang about a top recruit wide receiver,,,how many times a game does GT throw the ball.

  • Who give a dang about a top recruit “O” lineman,,,GT beat GA with an under-sized 3rd team “O” tackle who is a converted tight end.

  • Defenses will catch up to the option offense in 3 to 4 years,,,in 3 to 4 years these same defensive players will have moved on. Don’t know of any defensive player that hangs around long enough to learn to defend the option offense.

  • Discipline,,,Discipline,,,stops the option!!! Defensive players doing what they’re coached to do. Maybe 2 out 4 plays a defensive player will stay in position to make the play against an option offense. The other 2 of 4 plays GT runs for 8 to 80 yards.

  • 45 - 42!!! Got to listen to it all year!!! Get use to it!!!

  • CPJ is at GT now,,,if he moves on in 1 year or 20,,,so be it. Chances are his teams will beat UGA 80% of the time, only because the GA defensive players won’t play with the discipline to stop his offense.

I have managed to get UGA & GT fans upset. Unbiased commentary usually does that, FANatical, enough said. In GA for 10 years, know Bobby Ross he was at my commissioning ceremony. Played football at VMI, CPJ triple threat makes you play from sideline to sideline. Regardless of players moving on every few years, coaches and teams learn how to coach up players once they are familiar with an offensive scheme. With that being said Tech fans, Tech will have the best run it has ever had. It is not the school or players it is the coach. CPJ at Florida, USC, Texas, Georgia, with the level of talent these schools annually attract would have finished at least 11-1 this year. Could you imagine CPJ with Tim Tebow and the gators. Because of the academic rigors at Navy, GT etc, the attrition rate is a lot higher, at far less schools such as Georgia, Alabama etc kids can take b.a. classes, not at Tech all b.s. classes. GT plus academics plus CPJ = average football program going to good great, at easier academic power house schools that formula would equal great football program going to Pete Carrol status.

To the Georgia fans, you are still a second tier SEC football program behind Florida, get over it.

I did notice the bias feedback as nobody is the GA Tech room refutes the GA comments and nobody in the GA commentary refutes GA tech commentary..I wonder why…All of you are GT & GA homers.

I fear the loss of some important defensive pieces, and winning more than 9 regular season games next year is going to be difficult at best. I could perceive a dip next year, with great improvement in 2010. What we are all looking forward to is when Tech’s program is good enough to be very good every year. In the past, it seemed that every time the program would move forward the coach would leave. For that reason, I want PJohnson to have a long lucrative contract. Did we constantly fear that Bobby Dodd was looking to move, and that’s what we want now.

You might sign 20 five star athletes but when it comes to defending the complex offense of CPJ all they will be doing is going back to the sidelines scratching their heads….

I think Tech has done what it needs to do to keep CPJ for now. If he continues to improve and the cash flow continues, he will get consistant increases that will keep him competitive at GT. If he wins Championships, including a NC. He will have no reason to leave.

It has been pointed out that CPJ’s recruits have typically not faired in the NFL. He was at Navy and Georgia Southern for crying out loud!

But let’s say it is his brand of offense…so he will not attract the calibre of player at Tech to run this offense that say a USC, UGA, LSU, Florida, attract at their programs.

Then you say that CPJ will just bolt to the next big opportunity. So why on earth would those schools try to steal him away from Tech? I think this is the perfect school for his perfect option.

As for not making it to the NFL…perhaps not at QB. The QB is the only skill position that requires vastly different skills than the next level playing QB. The Running backs are still running backs.

The QB position could evolve into much more than we saw this year. I think we will see much more passing next year.

CPJ’s handicap at Navy was the limited size of his players. While he could build a finesse offense, but defense is much more difficult to finesse…that takes size speed & skill. Tenuta’s D was a sort of finesse based on stunts. It worked to a degree, but got burned alot.

Tech has proven that we can recruit, coach, compete with, and promote defense to the next level. So now CPJ has the defensive side that he never had at Navy.

with the more gifted offensive talent than he could ever have had at Navy, CPJ has everything he needs to compete and beat any team in FBS. With all the nay saying that “top teir programs” have said about his system can’t compete, I think he likes nothing better than to take a team that the SEC says couldn’t compete and beat them.

I rambled on this post, but the bottom line is:

The future is bright on The Flats.

Thanks Coach Johnson & AD D-Rad

I think you will see the stadium begin to fill back up now.

I love firing up the gay tech and ugay fans…you know you must be the gold standard when your entire seasonal objective is to beat one team, the little brother beating the big brother mentality, the one time it happens people talk about it for years.

Georgia..you got beat by all three of your little brothers in one year…the alcohol is ruining those 5 star bodies.

CPJ..at Georgia would equal a few national titles.

CMR..at GT would equal Chan Gailey.

Wait till CPJ goes the big contract from a big ten, pac 10 or sec school. He is gone. CMR you are done.

If the Tech fans are correct, CMR may not win a game next year or the next 2 years. Just trying to listen to the logic here. Although none of it is making any sense.

And for the record, Tech has done a great job recruting the state of Georgia the last few years. Nesbitt, Dwyer, Jones, and Thomas for example. Let me guess - the dogs didn’t want any of them anyway. All I can say is you have to love and cheer for any team that wins in this day and age with players who all have to take and pass calculus. I love the Tide, but if we (or GA, FL, LSU, etc.) had to bench all of our players who could not pass calculus, we would be left with 11 guys playing both ways.

Funny stuff! Turned down an appointment to West Point?! Honor code? ME program? Sounds suspect to me, but hey, what ever floats your boat.. Nothing wrong with VMI. I would submit that before you knock the UGA/GT rivalry, and how the fan bases react to each other, you should educate yourself on the history. It has one of the most storied histories of any rivalry, GT will make it even more intense, because we will finally be competitive. I’m not sure what you mean about GT fans thinking that we will win NC every year, I personally have never encountered a GT fan with those expectations. I have met MANY UGA fans who are elitist, but that’s why they are considered by most, as the WORST fans in college football!

Hey 54UGA: I think right now, GT is the best team in the state of Georgia. If I am not mistaken, we beat UGA between the smelly hedges and are ranked higher. Keep dreamin and maybe next year you will win it all! LMFAO! “THWG” Ramble on! JACKETS RULE!

So you really only need to post your silly hateful comments once. Maybe you ought to stick to calculus and stay away from technology that’s a bit too advanced for you.

As a GT fan 1st, and a UGA fan 2nd, i just dont understand all the hatred for all things UGA.

Wanna know the REAL teams you should hate? ANY School that supports the BCS and is fighting against change! Think Big Ten and Pac 10 schools!

Anyone thinking a 1 loss ACC team will be voted into the mythical “championship game” is dreaming!
Just look at VT the past few years and how many times theve been close, but got passed over for the SEC champ, Texas, USC, Oklohama or a Ohio State.

Face it… until a playoff system is in place, college football will ALWAYS be a 2nd tier sport!!

Im looking forward to watching GT woop up on USC tonight in basketball!!
Go GT, UGA, Falcons, Jets, Hawks and Braves!!

Tech Fans are so pathetic. Your program hasn’t been relevant in 20 years and won’t be even with this offense. You will get what is coming to you 8 out of every 10 years. Live it up you gimps because your a$$ whipping is coming on the Flats just like it has year after year for the past decade.

    Baby Johnson,

Richt took UGA to a BCS game in two years, something PJ won’t do next year, or any year after that. Richt has been to 3 BCS games in 8 short seasons. LOL, if you actually had a salary job I’d ask you to make a wager since you’re soooo confident that Yech will go to a BCS game next year, even though they haven’t won their own pathetic conference in God knows how long. Too funny for words!!!

You tech fans are pathetic. Worry more about Tech than your in-state rival. You won’t win the ACC next year, and this guy didn’t even have interest in a high-end program.

THAT’S A LAUGH! WE WON A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN THE LAST 20 YEARS. HOW ABOUT YOU GUYS? AND WHOEVER PLAYED AT VMI IS A JOKE. WHAT ARE YOU DOING ON HERE?

SO I JUST CHECKED YOUR SCHEDULE ON ESPN AND I SHOULD NEVER HAVE DOUBTED YOUR COMMENTS. YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO TALK SMACK ABOUT OTHER TEAMS BECAUSE YOU GUYS ARE SO GOOD AT FOOTBALL. JUST SHUT UP. MAYBE YOUR ALUMNI SHOULD DONATE ALL THAT MONEY INTO THEIR FOOTBALL PROGRAM.

VMIKeydet: Any Atlanta paper should prefer Tech. UGA is not a Atlanta team. You state an obvious fact. UGA is very hated. Their fans make it that way. Also, their teams are notorius underachievers and no one likes underachievers. They always look lazy.

Just as the sun will come up tomorrow, you can always get UGA fans into a “its all about recruitin’” discussion. UGA considers itself to be the Master Recruiter. What UGA is known for is getting nowhere with their recruits. What difference does it make to have 200 5 star players on the bench when you can never get to the big game ? Why are they there ? Every year UGA proves that 5 star recruits mean nothing. Go ahead, take em all. You’re still the college football equivalent of the Yankees. No championships.
