Spurrier gets commitment from Tucker’s Jonathan Davis

Tucker’s Jonathan Davis, an AJC Super 11 selection, committed to South Carolina on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis picked the Gamecocks over Georgia Tech, Boston College, Central Florida, Oklahoma State, and Louisville.

“It was the best move for me,” Davis said. “I’ve been sitting in my basement thinking about what I should do. I had input from my parents, and I just decided South Carolina was where I wanted to be the next four years.”

Davis said he broke the news to South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier over the phone. “Coach Spurrier was really happy. He said they love me as an athlete, and also as a team leader. He likes how I always keep my teammates playing hard.”

Davis said South Carolina is recruiting him as an “athlete.” He will be given the chance to play tailback, safety or linebacker.

Davis is arguably the state’s best overall player, and also highly regarded as a college prospect. He proved to be one of the top performers in last weekend’s state championship games at the Georgia Dome, helping Tucker win it’s first-ever title.

Davis said he has “no hard feelings” toward Georgia Tech, which offered Davis and expected him to commit soon after. The Jackets withdrew the offer after Davis said he needed more time to make a decision.

Davis is the nephew of former UGA All-SEC linebacker Mitch Davis. The Bulldogs have shown moderate interest in Davis, but have yet to offer.

Congratulations Jonathan. You’ll be a good one if you continue to work hard.

Notice they are recruiting him as an “athlete”.

That’s because he is not an “academic.” Hope they have some easy majors up there!

Grades and character will catch up here. USC is not nearly the program that GT or UGA is.

pihialum - why are you picking on him? Is he that different than any kid on the team you pulled for other than yours didn’t have anyone that was even close to being that talented, of win state or probably even make it to the playoffs and probably all the above.

Which is it Carvell…he chose SC over Tech, or Tech yanked his offer? You reported both. We all know the real story already. Great reporting. I know you wont post this.

Big Bug, thanks for the feedback. I thought it was pretty clear at the bottom of the story: Davis was offered by Georgia Tech, and Davis said Georgia Tech withdrew the scholarship after he didn’t commit by the time they needed a decision. He picked SC over GT, because if had wanted to go to GT, he wouldve committed in the fair amount of time alloted by CPJ.

Don’t look now, but USC is loading up this year. If these guys play as well at the college level as they did in high school, the Cocks should be pretty good for the next few years.

South Carolina has been “loading up” for years. Good luck to Davis, he played hard in the championship game. Lots of folks seem to know his academic status. Wonder what their GPAs were.

I ws suprised to see nothing on here about their earlier committment from RB Jarvis Giles, which was probably an even bigger catch for them. SC’s class is currently Rivals’ #8, Scout’s #9, and ESPN’s (not updated) #13. However the SEC has 8 teams currently ranked in the top 25 of those rankings, and 2 teams (LSU & Alabama) ranked even higher than SC, so the competition is tough.

Tom Cruse & Dustin Hoffman are great leading men at 5-7 to 5-8, but Safty and Line Backers at major colleges need to be bigger. Maybe he can return kicks and punts but I just don’t see him doing that well in the SEC. Good Luck at USC and hope you enjoy your time in college.

Actually, USC has not been “loading up” lately, except for in ‘07. Scout rated them 28, 20, 24 7, 34 for the last five years. Not too bad, but certainly not like this year (except, again, in ‘07). We’ll just have to wait and see.

Good for Johnathan Davis. Spurrier is a great coach that anyone would be lucky to play for. If you know a QB, please entice him to go there too. Until they get a QB, they will continue to underachieve. If he loses again next year like he did this year (especially to Florida), then he will retire. Carvell, JD is a great player (especially in high school). But, let’s not call an undersized player who doesn’t have a true position “arguably the best player in the state.” Ever heard of Branden Smith, Jarvis Jones, Abry Jones, and WaShaun Ealey. Have we still not been ablt to get an update from Branden Smith about his visit this pas weekend to UGA for their Gala? Do your job, please. Or, do we not have a story because rivals hasn’t posted one either. If so, do us all a favor and get a scout.com subscription.

For those who post negative comments on this young man is unbelieveable. The man works his tail off on the field to get a reward and yet people want to find something negative to say about him, GET A LIFE FOLKS!!!!!! Jonathan Davis, good luck and all the best in S.C.

There have been many over achievers in football who were small in stature. Emmett Smith was only listed at 5’9”, and he had a pretty decent career. JD plays much bigger than his height. I wish him the best of luck and wish you to get over yourself. I would think CSS and CPJ would be much better at evaluating wheather a kid is major college talent than you sir.

Any player that is from Georgia and has a chance to play for the two best Football Program in the Nation and then go play for another school is just plain stupid what are you thinking I guess not with your brain or else scared of the academic program at GA. and GT. Because that mean you would have to study to stay on the team and at SC all you have to do is play football. Now you will never know what it is like to play for a championship team. Anyway Best of luck.

the only reason usc jr has had a top ten recruiting class is because they brought in 31+ kids. look for them to drop as we get closer to NSD.
