Tucker’s Jonathan Davis has “no hard feelings” against Georgia Tech

Tucker’s Jonathan Davis, who has committed to South Carolina. said he has “no hard feelings” against Georgia Tech.

“Georgia Tech is a great place, but it’s not the place for me …if I thought it was, I would’ve committed to Georgia Tech when I had the chance,” Davis said.

“I do want to thank Georgia Tech for everything they did for me. [Linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary] was great to me, and I really appreciate it.”

When Tech offered Davis in September, the Jackets were hoping that Davis wouldn’t need long to decide. However, Davis said when he needed more time to explore his options, Tech decided to go in another direction.

“There are no hard feelings, no sir,” Davis said. “They had to do what was in their best interests, I understood that.”

Georgia Tech’s coaches are not allowed to comment on a prospective student-athlete, per NCAA rules.

The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis picked the Gamecocks over Tech, Boston College, Central Florida, Oklahoma State, and Louisville. He will be given the chance to play tailback, safety or linebacker at South Carolina.

Could WR Marlon Brown commit to UGA on Saturday?

Wide receiver Marlon Brown of Memphis liked UGA so much the first time he saw it, that he’s coming back for a second look.

And when one of the country’s top prospects makes a return trip to a college campus, there’s one question that jumps to mind: Is there any chance of Brown committing to Georgia this weekend?

“No sir, no, I will not be committing to anyone this weekend,” Brown said on Wednesday evening.

“I like Georgia a lot. I wanted to go back and see it again, talk to the players and coaches, and basically just get more information so I can make the best college decision possible.”

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Brown is Georgia’s No. 1 target at wide receiver. Brown said he has talked over the phone with UGA head coach Mark Richt and wide receivers coach John Eason in the last couple of days.

“They are real excited about me coming back there,” Brown said. “They said they are appreciative that I’m taking the time to learn more about [UGA]. It’s a good thing for me, too. I had fun the first time I went there, and I want to see if I feel the same way when I go back.”

Brown said it will be a quick trip: He will arrive in Athens on Saturday morning, and then leave later that night. He said he will meet with football coaches and players, and also watch some of Georgia’s basketball game during the 12-hour stay.

This trip, Brown’s second to UGA, will be an unofficial visit. His first-ever trip to Athens was an official visit for the Alabama game.

Who is Georgia’s main competition for Brown? It appears to be Ohio State and Tennessee. Brown also made a return trip to Ohio State, checking it out last weekend. He also has official visits to Florida on Jan. 10 and LSU on Jan. 24.

Brown admitted there’s a huge amount of hometown pressure for him to sign with Tennessee. One the same day that Lane Kiffin was hired as Tennessee’s coach, Kiffin left directly from his press conference to catch a flight from Knoxville to Memphis. He watched Brown’s high school basketball game, and then had an in-home visit.

“That was amazing, I still can’t believe he did that on the same day he was [hired],” Brown said.

Tennessee also holds prime position on Brown’s recruiting schedule. He will make his fifth and final recruiting trip to Tennessee on Jan. 30, putting the Volunteers in position to make the biggest impression before signing day on Feb. 4.

Spurrier gets commitment from Tucker’s Jonathan Davis

Tucker’s Jonathan Davis, an AJC Super 11 selection, committed to South Carolina on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis picked the Gamecocks over Georgia Tech, Boston College, Central Florida, Oklahoma State, and Louisville.

“It was the best move for me,” Davis said. “I’ve been sitting in my basement thinking about what I should do. I had input from my parents, and I just decided South Carolina was where I wanted to be the next four years.”

Davis said he broke the news to South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier over the phone. “Coach Spurrier was really happy. He said they love me as an athlete, and also as a team leader. He likes how I always keep my teammates playing hard.”

Davis said South Carolina is recruiting him as an “athlete.” He will be given the chance to play tailback, safety or linebacker.

Davis is arguably the state’s best overall player, and also highly regarded as a college prospect. He proved to be one of the top performers in last weekend’s state championship games at the Georgia Dome, helping Tucker win it’s first-ever title.

Davis said he has “no hard feelings” toward Georgia Tech, which offered Davis and expected him to commit soon after. The Jackets withdrew the offer after Davis said he needed more time to make a decision.

Davis is the nephew of former UGA All-SEC linebacker Mitch Davis. The Bulldogs have shown moderate interest in Davis, but have yet to offer.

Georgia’s Mark Richt tells Florida QB Aaron Murray to “go for it”

Quarterback Aaron Murray of Tampa, Fla., got a phone call from one of his biggest fans, Georgia coach Mark Richt.

Murray, who has committed to the Bulldogs, made an improbable return to lead Plant High to a win in last week’s Florida state semifinals. He suffered what was supposed to be a season-ending injury with a broken left leg on Oct. 16.

Murray was projected to be out for 3-4 months after surgery, but was taking snaps after only seven weeks of rehabilitation. He will lead his team against Lincoln in Saturday’s state championship.

There were concerns among some UGA fans that Murray may have rushed back too soon. However, Richt called Murray to both endorse his decision to play and wish him well in the championship.

“He [Richt] said if he was in the same situation, he would definitely be playing, too,” Murray said. “He said you never know how life works out, and you may never again get to play for a big championship. And if you have the chance to play for one, you’ve got to go for it.”

Doctors gave Murray the clearance to play, providing that he heavily wrap up his left ankle.

In the days after the semifinals appearance, Murray was still sore. But it wasn’t really his left leg. “It was my neck and shoulder from getting tackled. I felt like I always do after the season’s first day of football practice. But the leg is fine.”

Murray’s comeback is a like a Hollywood movie. On his first pass in the semifinals, Murray threw a touchdown.

Clemson to visit with Northside LB Fields

Coaches from Clemson are planning to visit Northside-Warner Robins linebacker Eric Fields later this week, according to his high school coach.

Fields, an AJC Super 11 selection, committed early to Clemson, backed off that commitment and visited Georgia, then committed to Clemson again in October.

Northside coach Conrad Nix wasn’t aware of Fields scheduling any official on-campus visits with other schools. But, Nix said, “He’s pretty well settled on them [Clemson].”
