Dunwoody DE Malcolm Mitchell excited about meeting with UGA coaches

Dunwoody defensive end Malcolm Mitchell says he will wait until January to take official visits, but he’s excited about a meeting at his school this week with Georgia recruiters.

As one of the AJC’s The Georgia 150 prospects, Mitchell said UGA plans to meet with him on Thursday. He says Georgia has been in contact with him for most of the season.

“I’m pretty nervous, excited,” said Mitchell, a 6-foot-2, 225-pounder, who has not been offered by Georgia. “But if they offer, I’ll probably commit there very quickly. … They’ve had one d-end already committed. I’m hoping I can be the second one.”

Mitchell said he will take official visits on consecutive January weekends to Alabama-Birmingham, Central Florida, Tulane and Troy. He originally had wanted to take some visits this month, but they could not be worked out.

Last week, recruiters from Tulane and Western Kentucky came to see him.

Other offers for Mitchell have come from West Virginia, South Carolina, Louisville, Marshall and Indiana. Georgia Tech has Mitchell on its recruiting board, but told him they are waiting to see what some other players are going to do before making a final decision on an offer.

Who will Georgia Tech target at RB after losing Dennis to Troy?

Luke Swift of Center Grove High in Greenwood, Ind. is a leading candidate to receive the scholarship vacated earlier this week by Carver running back Demond Dennis, who surprisingly switched from Georgia Tech to Troy.

Swift, who rushed for 1,667 yards and 20 touchdowns to help lead Center Grove to Indiana’s Class 5A state championship last month, received an in-home visit from Jackets coach Paul Johnson on Sunday Dec. 7.

And he’s scheduled to take an official visit to Tech this weekend.

Though the Jackets haven’t offered Swift, one of his teammates, quarterback Jordan Luallen, is optimistic that Tech will pull the trigger.

“Quite possibly,” Luallen wrote in a text when asked if Swift will be offered by Tech. “This weekend will be big.”

Luallen committed to the Jackets in May.

Tech has commitments from running backs Daniel Drummond of Flowery Branch and Orwin Smith of Central High in Phenix City, Ala.

Jarvis Jones returns from UGA, will take other trips

Carver-Columbus linebacker Jarvis Jones didn’t have much to say about last weekend’s official visit to Georgia. But that’s nothing new with Jones, according to his coach.

“He just said everything went well, he enjoyed himself, and he’s still going to take his other official visits,” Carver’s Dell McGee said. “He is just laying low, gathering information from all the colleges, so he can make the best decision for himself.”

Jones has also taken an official visit to Southern Cal, and will take recruiting trips to Florida, Texas and LSU in January. Jones is a top priority for Georgia, with the Bulldogs dispatching six assistants for an in-home visit on the first day of the contact period.

“The visit to Georgia was a good opportunity for his mother to see the campus, and for Jarvis to experience the social scene in Athens,” McGee said. “He got to meet the academic people and spend time with the coaches.”

UGA’s recruiting host for Jones was tight end Bruce Figgins, who is also from Columbus.

Lassiter’s Lutzenkirchen hasn’t heard from Auburn coach

New Auburn head coach Gene Chizik isn’t making many fans with his arrival.

Lassiter tight end Philip Lutzenkirchen has not heard from the new Tigers head coach, Lutzenkirchen’s father, Mike, told the AJC on Tuesday. That’s never a good sign for a recruit who is committed, but exploring his options.

Lutzenkirchen received a personal visit from Alabama head coach Nick Saban on Friday, then traveled to Knoxville for an unofficial visit to see Tennessee. He and his father met with Lane Kiffin personally during the visit.

“He’s dealing with it in a proactive manner,” Mike Lutzenkirchen said. “Philip wants to see how it all plays out because they haven’t talked about what they’re going to do on offense at all, but he’s got options, fortunately. And some of those are very good options.”

Florida is a strong possibly to replace Auburn for Lutzenkirchen’s services, but Texas, South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida State and now the Crimson Tide are all on the bandwagon of one of the most sought after recruits in the nation.

Parkview RB Jacobs “surprised” that Auburn picked Chizik, not Turner Gill

Parkview’s Brandon Jacobs, an Auburn commitment, told the AJC he was surprised when the Tigers hired Gene Chizik, and said he is waiting to speak with the former Iowa State head coach and former Auburn assistant.

“It gets me thinking about what offense they will run,” Jacobs said in a text message. “But I haven’t had a chance to talk with [Chizik] and see what he’s about; he’s supposed to call this week.”

Jacobs said he was surprised that Chizik got the job over Buffalo coach Turner Gill, who became a subject of conversation after not being offered the Auburn job. Former Auburn basketball player Charles Barkley made national news when he said Gill, an African-American, did not get the job because of race.

“I mean, I thought Gill was going to be it,” Jacobs said. “But obviously [Auburn] saw something better in Chizik that could help the program.”

Jacobs committed to Auburn months ago and has maintained he’s “100 percent” committed to the Tigers. He also has received an offer from Florida.

Demond Dennis switches from Georgia Tech to Troy

Running back Demond Dennis of Atlanta’s Carver High, who had committed to Georgia Tech this fall, now plans to sign with Troy, according to Carver coach Darren Myles Sr.

”He can be the focus ball carrier at Troy with the offense they run, a spread option, whereas with Georgia Tech, you’ve got the B back as the first option, the quarterback and then the tailback as the third,” Myles said. “Demond wanted to go some place where he could be the feature back.”

Troy coaches also felt Dennis had a chance to play as a true freshman. Tech’s primary running backs are sophomore Jonathan Dwyer and redshirt freshman Roddy Jones. Tech also has commitments from running backs Orwin Smith of Alabama and Daniel Drummond of Flowery Branch.

Alabama’s Nick Saban coming to town to meet with state’s No. 1 prospect

Washington High cornerback Branden Smith is expecting a visit at his school on Wednesday from Alabama coach Nick Saban and Florida assistant Kenny Carter, according to Washington coach Stanley Pritchett.

Pritchett told the AJC that Smith enjoys the visits but is growing weary of recruiting as decision time nears. Smith has said he will announce his decision Jan. 4 during the Under Armour All-American Bowl in Orlando.

“I think he’s getting tired of it,” Pritchett said. “He came to me [Tuesday] and just talked about the pressures of all the schools coming every day. I just told him, ‘Hang in there.’ He has a tough decision to make. He hasn’t tipped off [his decision], but I know he wants Jan. 4 to get here as quick as possible.”

Visits to Washington’s school are common. Last week, Smith got visits from Georgia’s Rodney Garner, Florida State’s Mickey Andrews and Alabama’s Lance Thompson, Pritchett said.
